Frog legs

•Hindlegs are strong and muscular because they are used for jumping

•Forelegs provide balance and cushion the frog when it lands after jumping

Frog Eye

• The frog has large bulging eyes

• The frog has 3 eyelids– 2 outer ones are the color of the frog’s body

and do not move– 3rd eyelid is a transparent membrane that

protects the eye while permitting the frog to see under water

• It also keeps the eye moist when the frog is on land

Eardrum and External Nares

• Behind the eye is the circular eardrum

• 2 openings in the nasal cavity-external nares are found toward the tip of the snout

– These will close when the frog is under water

• Smooth, moist, and thin

• Frog can breathe directly through skin as well as with lungs

• Notice the difference in coloring between the belly and the rest of the frog’s body

• Sticky- used to catch insects

• Ridges along the inside of upper jaw are maxillary teeth

• 2 vomerine teeth are located toward the front of the upper jaw

• The gullet (throat) is the wide opening that leads to the esophagus

• On both sides of the gulled near the jaw hinges are openings to the Eustachian tube.– These lead to the eardrum
