May 25 , 1989Dear Fr iends in Chri s t#We have been r a t he r busy th e l a s t few weeks w i th p re p ar at io n s fo r our shor t fur lough. It seems as if it i s as much work ge t t i ng ready fo r a shor t fur lough i s as much worka s ge t t i ng ready fo r a l on g e r f ur lo u gh .Char les and fami ly wi l l be l iv in g in th e same house so the house had to be rear rangedto accommodate them. Things t ha t were s tored in the rooms have been moved to o the ra r ea s . Of course , c lean ing the rooms a t th e same t ime a l so t akes t ime . Except fo rsome o f th e heavy work Neva has been r es p on s ib le f or most of t h i s . And it has to bedone whi le th e r eg ul ar c la ss es and work con t inue .I have t r i e d to ar range books and o f f i c e so t h a t Char les wi l l be able to know wheret hin gs a re . Also the church bu l l e t i n s fo r the summer have b een pa r t i a l ly decided. The i n fo rmat ion i s on th e computer and a l l Char les has to do i s to en te r h is sermontitle and t e x t and then p r in t th e bu l l e t i n ou t .Char les and Pa t t i h av e b een busy , too , w ith ge t t ing the t r a i l e r and t ruck ready fo rt ravel and preparing sermons he wil l be preaching th i s summer. Our t r a i l e r and trucka re parked a t Boise. They wi l l be ta kin g th e t ruck and t r a i l e r t o Ca li fo rn ia withthem and wi l l leave them with our daugh te r, Linda, who now l iv es in California ,We are expecting the i r ar r ival on June 1st . Since I am leaving June 7th we are goingto be r a the r busy get t ing them o rie nte d to the work and cu l t u r e dur ing t h a t t ime .Neva wi l l be s tay ing on un t i l August 27th so she can help Charle s w ith h is Japaneseand he lp w ith the camp. With hardly any promotion on Charles ' par t fr iends and churches who had h ea rd ab ou tt he i r coming sent in more than enough money to pay fo r t he i r t ranspor ta t ion . In fac t ,we have rece ived more money fo r them than we have rece ived to go on fur lough. While on fur lough we hope to be able to inc rease our suppor t . We don ' t have enoughmoney coming in to mainta in our budge t and recen t ly we have l o s t some suppor t fromchurches who are supporting someone from the i r church. But since we are vis i t ing onlysupporting churches it looks l ike we must depend on you to consider increasing yours u p p o r t .I will be at t h e Nor t h Ame r i c a n Christian Conve n t i o n . One wants to use it twice. So it wi l l be wel l used dur ing th e shor t summer vacat ion .New English classes were s tar ted in April . There have been an increase in the numberof sm aller c hild re n coming. On the other hand enrol lment in the J r . Hi. c lasses wentdown. Just today a lady called to ask i f Neva would teach a group of ladies in theiromes. September H* 1989Dear Fr i ends in Chr i s t ,

Neva and I a r r i ved back in Japan a f t e r our sho r t fur loughS eptem ber 1.By the time we arr ived in Sapporo we had been t r av el in g fo r 24hours. Our daughter Linda with her husband Gary and two chi ldrendrove us from Arroyo Grande to the LA a i r po r t in t ime fo r our 9 A.M.check in fo r the 11 A.M. KAL f l i gh t . We were one hour l a t e inar r iv ing a t Nari ta a i rpo r t near Tokyo so only had about two hours togo through immigration, customs and to take our four heavy pieces ofluggage to the domestic depar tu re a rea. Our fr iends who were to meetus a t Chitose had gone to the a i rpor t the day before by mistake but assoon as I ca l l ed th e wife came to pick us up and take us to our home.

We arrived a t 10:00 P.M. Japan t ime and were gra tefu l tha t Charles andPa t t i had l e f t it so t h a t we could soon go to bed.Early Sunday morning I was up in order to look over the sermon Iwas to deliver that morning. I t was delivered while s t i l l in je t lag.I f you have ever t rave l led overseas then you know what tha t means.Probably some of you have a hard time jus t to adjust to daylightsaving*s t ime .As many of you know I arr ived in the sta tes June 7th. Charleshad left our t r u ck and trailer wi th Linda . He had spen t some t imeworking on it so it was ready for our furlough. In vis i t ing oursupporting churches [Sorry i f I missed you.] I travelled some 12,000

miles through th e fo llowing states; California, Arizona, New Mexico,Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, I l l inois , Indiana, Kentucky,Tennesee, Virg in ia , West Virg in ia , Ohio, Pennslyvania, New Jersey ,Michigan, Neb ra ska, Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho.Neva stayed in Japan where she had her regular schedule ofclasses , h elp ed Cha rle s in preparing his sermons for delivery inJ^pane^se, and planned fo r as we l l a s h elp ed a t the summer camp.Because of the plane scheduling Neva had to leave Japan the l as tday of the camp. The closing of the camp and t ranspor ta t ion of thecampers back to Sapporo was l e f t up to Charles and Mr. Kimura ofTomakomai. There were a t o t a l of 4-8 campers-33 elementary, 5 J r . Hi.,

    a n d 1 0 adults.Neva l e f t Japan Ju ly 27th and was met a t LA a i rpo r t by ourdaughter and family . On Saturday she flew from Santa Barbara viaDenver and Chicago to Champaign, 111. I met her a t Champaign. I t i sj u s t a few minutes drive from Neva's bro ther who l i ves in Danvil le ,111. By the t ime Neva ar r ived in Champaign she had been in e igh td i ff e re n t a ir p o rt s. Although she wasn' t aware o f it a t the t ime Nevawas on th e same Uni ted f l i g h t t h a t had crashed th e day befo re in Sioux

    s i s t e r s . This i s the f i r s t t ime they were a l l together a t the samet ime s ince I96O.

Neva was able to see her brothers and s is te rs > a ls o. She saw onesister on our way from Iowa to Nebraska and flew to Arkansas to visi ther ailing younger brother. Because a cousin very generously got upearly and drove her two hours to the Lincoln [Nebr.] airport she wasable to add stopovers to her Visit USA Ticket a t a very minimalcha rge .

After Neva joined me we spent some time with our two sonS) Allanand Donald in the greater Cincinnati area. We were also able to spendthree days with my mother in Iowa. When we visited Neva*s home townchurch in Clay Center Neva was able to see several of her relatives.I drove the t ruck and t r a i l e r through to Boise while Neva wasflying down to see her brother. At Boise I met Charles and family whowere returning from Japan. We were able to visit with them a l i t t lebut much of our t ime there was taken up with packing for the re turntrip. From Boise we flew to California and then on to Japan. We want to thank a l l of you fo r the addi t iona l support you gaveboth for Charles* coming and our furlough. We thank you too for the

opportunity to tell about Japan personally and for the hospitality youextended. We weren't able to see a l l of you and for th is we apologize. I tis not tha t we don't value your support but we just did not haveenough t ime fo r everyone. We are back in Japan and are beginning a new term of service. Wehave no plans to retire in the near future. In a couple of yearswill be 65 and will be drawing Social Security payments. But we planto con tinue to work here as long as we are able to do so. BrotherMartin B. Clark recently passed away at the age of 75 and he was s t i l ll abo r ing he re .Since returning to Japan we saw a new face at the morning worshipand a couple of people have called concerning the church or a problem.Recently we saw a bicycle that was partly on our drive. Later i twas over near our house. At f i r s t , we thought i t was someone a t theneighbors but upon asking them we found they knew nothing abo^ut i t . 1called the police and since the bike had a registration number on i tthey were able to give me a name and phone number. Upon calling welearned that i t had been stolen during the w in ter. The owner, whol ived on the other side of town, came and got i t the next day. Thequestion that remains is why i t was lef t at our place.May God bless you and thanks for everything you have done.
