BETHLEHEM. – Malefu Vilaka-zi, the executive mayor of theThabo Mofutsanya DistrictMunicipality, says she is happywith the progress made inhelping the families who sufferedlosses in the hail and storm thathit Bohlokong near Bethlehemrecently. The district municipali-ty mayor came forward with herrecently launched programme ofhelping the victims with roofsafter many roofs had been blownoff by the strong wind.

Two months ago a strong windstorm that only lasted about 15minutes left over a 100 familieswithout roofs and caused exten-sive damage to residentialproperties.

After the incident the local

municipality of Dihlabengassisted the victims with tentsand tarpaulins to cover theirhouses.

Vilakazi, who recently visitedthe victims to check the progressafter they had appointed acontractor to fix 109 houses, saysshe would like to see all thehouses finished before Christmas.

“I am happy with the progressthat has been made. About 40%of the work has been done. However, I have requested thecontractor to move fast, becausewe want all the victims to be inproper houses before Christmas,”she says.

She says they have reached anagreement with her co-workersto donate and put a ceiling inone of the houses, because theowner is old and he is not

working.Vilakazi says 111 houses were

affected, but after an audit theyfound that some people havemanaged to fix their housesthemselves.

“While we were still goingaround we found that there wasan RDP house in Ward 9 whichhad no roof. I requested thecontractor to construct a roof forus without charging the munici-pality and he agreed. We thankhim for that,” she says.

Pita Lerata (58) says he isoverwhelmed with what thegovernment has done for him. “Iwas frustrated after the stormand I did not know what to do. Iam still recovering from theshock. The big question on mymind was who would fix thehouse for me,” he says.

THE proposed name change ofHarrismith to Intabazwe hasbeen announced through anadvertisement placed in themedia. For life-long ratepayerswho helped to build this beauti-ful town at the foothills of oldPlatberg it is unsettling news.

According to Henk Badenhorst,DA councillor of the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality (MAP),legislation requires that at least14 days be given for the public tocomment or raise objection tosuch a proposal. In this casepeople have one day to do so.This makes the current processillegal in terms of the legislation.

Badenhorst says legislationalso states that a place cannot benamed after a place whichalready exists. The proposal is torename Harrismith to theadjacent Intabazwe.

In 2005 there was also aproposal for a name change. Itwas rejected by the wholecommunity of the greater Harri-smith who drew up a petitioncontaining almost 3 000 names.

Badenhorst says the nameHarrismith is in no way offensiveand has no apartheid connota-tion. The town was established in

the 1800’s, while Intabazwe wasestablished as an apartheiddormitory township in themid-1900’s. Most residents ofIntabazwe use the name Harri-smith in their postal address andthey argue that this is a smoke-screen to draw attention awayfrom the service delivery failures.

Furthermore, Badenhorst says,Harrismith is a name recognisedworldwide by tourists who usethe town as a halfway stopbetween Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, or en route to the WorldHeritage Site of the Drakensberg.

“It is most disturbing that itagain appears the intention is tochange the name of the secondoldest town in the Free Statewithout the community beingfully informed,” says Badenhorst.“A name change will destroy thestruggling tourism industry inthe town and would cause anenormous financial burden on thealready bankrupt municipality.

“The name change will involvean immense cost implication. It isuntimely to sign something likethis off on residents at the end ofthe year without proper notice. The financial situation of theMAP does not allow such achange,” says Gerhard van Wyk,an attorney from Harrismith.

bloodshed on 1 September 2011 afterdifferent illegal gold miners (known aszama-zamas) clashed underground atthe dysfunctional No.4 shaft of the StHelena Mine in Welkom. The ill-fated incident followed a bitter

argument over gold dug illegallyunderground.“The other faction made a human

MAKWANE. – The ThusanangAdvice Centre (TAC) recently heldan awareness campaign as part ofthe 16 Days of Activism of NoViolence against Women andChildren campaign. The campaign was held at the

Makwane Junior Primary School.Among the guests who attended

the event were Brothers for Lifeand members of the Makwanepolice.Jeanette Makae, acting director

of the TAC, said the campaignwas aimed at spreading themessage around Qwaqwa to stopabuse.“We want our people to break

the silence and report any kind ofabuse,” she said.Makae said they had hosted the

event at Makwane because that iswhere they have had the mostcases of abuses.“I am so happy with the

attendance. The community hasresponded positively to our call.“We are aware that more

women are afraid to report abusebecause they have lost confidencein the police and the courts.“So we as the TAC pleaded with

them to visit our offices for help,”she said.Sgt Relebohile Tau of the

Makwane police said theirconcern was that the most casesof violence against women and

children were not reported, whichmade it difficult for them to dealwith perpetrators.“There are many women and

children who are being abused, but they are afraid to come andreport it. The police’s door isalways open and people shouldcome to report such cases,” hesaid. He urged the community

members to stop going aroundat night because it is dange-rous.“We also want those mothers

who use child grants for theirown purpose to stop because thatis child abuse,” he said.He added that that money was

THE rot of fake qualifications is nothingnew in South Africa. Its increase is simplybecause it was left unchecked for too longwithout verifying with academic institutions.Unscrupulous individuals go to the extremeto pay for fake qualifications, and have noshame in producing fraudulent documents tosupport their curricula vitae – compromisingintegrity.Referring to the fake qualifications rot as

something not uncommon in South Africacame with my time in the media in the1980’s as an employee at the defunct weeklynewspaper Tribute which was based in theNorth-West town of Klerksdorp. The publica-tion was managed by a gentleman known asCayenne as the editor and my immediatesenior journalist was Abe (both are late). The editor claimed to have had a BA

degree in Human Resource Managementobtained at the Fort Hare University. The editor’s fake qualifications became a

talking point after his death. He used todeliver speeches at the newspaper’s yearlycorporate social event titled Against All Oddsat which he presented a CV with fake

qualifications.Through this event he qualified his fake

qualifications in a way, and thus earned therespect of the public while in fact hedeceived people. The corporate initiative was aimed at

encouraging excellence in education amongthe local high schools, targeting matriculantsin the township of Matlosana. It was ourtask, Abe and mine, to venture into thetownship to identify the deserving candi-dates. At the event Abe and I laughed ourlungs out that the editor was a dummy as hehad faked his qualifications. Unknowingly,Abe too also faked his qualifications. Abe’s

obituary read he had a diploma in Journal-ism from the University of South Africa(Unisa) – very much to my surprise havingknown him for years. The lie to misrepresenttheir qualifications followed the two men totheir graves as their obituary had read assuch. Both these guys could have easily obtained

any qualification if they pursued it. The twoguys, including myself, matriculated at theMampoi Secondary School in Qwaqwa. The duo were drop-outs of the University

of the North (now University of Limpopo). It is on this basis I state that we have in

South Africa people who unashamedly faketheir qualifications. Therefore, the growingnumber of South Africans misrepresentingtheir academic achievements is not new.Convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik, who

had a longstanding friendship with Pres.Jacob Zuma, faked his qualifications. Heclaimed he was a member of a professionalorganisation in an attempt to match hislearned siblings. Shaik claimed he had amaster’s in Business Administration and twodegrees from the United Kingdom and

America. One of my preferred politicians,Pallo Jordan, whom I held in high esteem asan independent political commentator whoalways called a spade a spade, faked doctor-ate qualifications. As if that is not enough,Ellen Tshabalala, the SABC’s board chairper-son, claims to have attained a BCom degreeand a post-graduate diploma in LabourRelations at Unisa, which the institution hasrefuted. Instead of producing proof ofqualifications to rest the matter, Tshabalalasaw it fit to go to court for protection. It is my strongly held view that the private

and public sector must verify with academicinstitutions the qualifications of people theyappoint to key positions to end the fakequalifications rot.) fact that it was a first game for some ofthem. We needed a win more than theopponents because that would boost ourmorale going forward in the league. However, we would have to work hard withour defence that gives away soft goals inevery game,” he said.Ramorebudi said he was ready for any
