Career ClustersThe Nebraska Department of Education believes that Career Clusters are the basis for high school reform and provide the infrastructure for a seamless educational transition between all learner levels. The state uses Career Clusters as a tool for career guidance, a platform for course sequence organization, and a way to improve the quality of Career Technical Education.

Our Explorer Posts offer programs in each of the clusters below. Look for the colored bar on the side of each page as it corresponds to the career cluster that the program falls under.

What is Exploring?

Exploring is a career education program for high school students. Adult volunteers are selected by the participating organization for involvement in the program. Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate an Explorer post by matching their staff and program resources to the interests of young people. Take a look inside to see what careers are available in the Omaha area to learn more about, and don’t forget to check www.omahaexploring.org to find more information and events.

QUESTION & ANSWERS

4 Register online at www.omahaexploring.org

Q: What will we do at the posts?A: Each post is a little different. Most Posts include hand-on activities, speakers and tours. The ultimate goal is for all local 14-20 year olds to decide whether a particular career is the right choice.

Q: There is only one date listed, is this is one time event?A: No. The date and time listed indicates the kickoff meeting. On average, most programs meet once a week for 6 to 8 weeks. Some posts meet year round. You will be given a complete schedule on the first night and are always welcome to call the contact listed to learn specifics. Keep in mind that we do have some one-day events and they are all labeled as such.

Q: How do I register?A: Visit us online at www.omahaexploring.org and click on the tab that reads “JOIN” and then “Register Now.”

Q: My friend got a letter inviting them to a post I found in this program guide. Am I allowed to come even though I didn’t get a letter?A: Yes! If there is space available and there is no age requirement that you need to meet, you are welcome to come.

Q: Are there internship, job, or volunteer opportunities available after the post is over if I really like the company?A: In most cases, yes, but not all. Anything done beyond the post is mostly in your control to make happen. Keep in mind however, just like any employment opportunity, only the right candidates are considered if at all. Just ask your Post Advisor if they have something available.

Q: Who is running the Explorer’s Post?A: Each Post is led by a team of experts in the field they are representing. Each Explorer Post is composed of at least four committee members, including the head of the organization, who are responsible for creating and implementing a quality program. All adult members of the Post receive background checks and youth protection training.

Q: Can I invite my friends?A: Yes, as long as space is available and there is no age requirement that they need to meet, friends are welcome.

Q: Are parents invited?A: Parents are always welcome to stay but it is not mandatory.

5Register online at www.omahaexploring.org Register online at www.omahaexploring.org

Q: What if I can’t go to the first night or any other night that the Post is meeting?A: That is up to the Post Advisor so make sure they know any conflicts you may have.

Q: Can I put this on my resume and/or college application?A: Absolutely. Participation in Exploring is the cornerstone of representing responsible young adults.

Q: Do you think my teacher would offer extra credit if I went to a Post?A: Many teachers do; it never hurts to ask.
