URBAN
RURAL
An urban area refers to a developed town or city, which typically has a large population and a high density of
houses, buildings and roads.
A rural area is found outside of towns and cities, with smaller settlements and a lower population. These areas
are usually agricultural, with fewer amenities.
Would you define the area you live in as urban or rural? Why?

Here are two pictures of different areas of Brazil. Which do you think is an urban area, and which is a rural area?
Explain your opinions.

In recent years, increasing numbers of people in rural areas of Brazil have begun
to move to urban areas. This is called urbanisation.

This is Yara. She currently lives in the north-east of Brazil, the poorest region of the country, with her two young children. She makes a small amount of money from working on a farm, but life is often hard. She is thinking about moving from her tiny,
rural village to Rio de Janeiro, the second biggest city in Brazil.
What do you think the pull factors of Rio de Janeiro are?
What do you think the push factors of her
village are?
Why do you think she wants to move?

Let’s hear more from Yara about why she is thinking about moving…
Can you sort these reasons into push factors and pull factors?
There is no electricity in my village.
There are lots of schools, colleges and universities in the city.
If my children get sick, there are hospitals and medicine in the city.
The only employment available in my village is in farming.
I am worried that my children will not get a good education
where we live.
In the city, I might be able to get a job where I can earn more money.

Now you are going to explore and discuss some more push and pull factors involved in Yara’s decision of whether or not to
move from her village to a city.
