#IE Application# 1: How do you imagine human interaction within the next ten years, considering technology? It is the intention, by this presentation, to backtrack in time and take a peek into the evolution of social interactions vis-a-vis the technological revolution of the last few decades. Ten years ago, who would have imagined the possibility of the current magnitude of crisscrossing interactions on social media let alone its availability at every whim? Ten years from now, what will it be? 3: Dalai Lama XIV, a Nobel peace laureate, had this to say about humans as social creatures. 4: Humans are by nature social creatures and interaction lies at the core of our being. It could be as simple as the need for company and as complex as the dependence on social interactions for existence. As Dalai Lama pointed out, the birth of anyone in the first place is due to the interaction of two people. Thereafter, everyone seeks to love, to be loved, to argue, to compete, to dominate and the list goes on. Take for example workers in remote environs; the sailors, astronauts, etc commonly reported the “soul-destroying loneliness,” as one sailor called it as the major challenge faced and …technology-aided social interaction would certainly be a veritable way to combat this. The account of hostages, prisoners of war, abductees and the like, further buttresses the importance of social interaction. Keron Fletcher, a former British military psychiatrist who had been on the receiving team for hostages noted that although they survived their ordeal, some found, that the experience even strengthened them. Yet none saw solitary confinement as anything less than torture.1 [Gawane .A: “Hellhole.”, The New Yorker, Annals of Human Rights, March 30, 2009 issue] 6:Born out of the need for some scientists to share information and collaborate, World Wide Web (WWW) was developed. In his first message on the WWW, Sir Tim Berner-Lee said “The World Wide Web project aims to allow all links to be made to any information anywhere. The WWW project was started to allow high energy physicists to share data, news, and documentation. We are very interested in spreading the web to other areas, and having gateway servers for other data. Collaborators welcome!“ This distinguished the tool from the onset as a social tool. The internet has since then been used as a tool of communication, collaboration, networking, exchanges, competition and the list is endless. It is increasingly at the core of connecting individuals, thus the term ‘Social Web’. 8:The past 20 years has seen tremendous growth in the way humans interact with the introduction of several social interactive platforms and networking sites. 12:With the use of more devices, will there be less physical and face to face interactions? We see that occurring today and it will likely grow.

SOCIAL INTERACTION: WHAT IT MEANS?
Social interaction is the process by which
we act and react to those around us. It
includes the actions of people towards each
other and the responses received. It could be
verbal or non-verbal.
Social interaction includes a large number of
behaviors and sociologists have identified
five categories: exchange, competition,
cooperation, conflict and coercion.

THE SOCIAL WEB2024 OUTLOOK – Possibilities Abound
The possibilities abound:
3D & 4D interactive networking sites – the craving for more of the
human element in the use of web tools will lead to the
creation/development of 3D and 4D sites.
Holograms and Sensory applications – Today video chat is an
exciting application that engages the eyes and ears. This is an
amazing real-time application. However, the sense of touch and
smell are yet to be aptly captured through the currently available
social tools. Integrating touch and smell sensations into media
interactions is a vista of possibilities awaiting
exploration…to science, you never say never.
THE SOCIAL WEB2024 OUTLOOK – Possibilities Abound (2)More possibilities:
Mobile Technology: hand-held devices are much easier to carry
around; thus making interaction easier. The trend shows a
preference for the use of mobile devices versus PCs and laptops.
Interaction between the Web and the Physical World: With the
advent of objects like the 3D printer, it is now is possible for the
Internet to come into real life in unexpected ways such as ordering
and receiving products online.
The journey into artificial intelligence is perhaps limitless.
It appears once thoughts can be crystallized, the outcome
is a yes-yes.
Accessibility & Privacy – in the years to come, the world will be even more
globalized and everyone will be accessible. This will also result in the
loss of privacy.
WILL MORE = LESS ???
THE UNFORESEEABLE FUTURE
Predictions about the future are not always accurate and some have missed
it in times past. One thing is clear however, that man remains a social
being and will continually seek to use technological advancement to meet his
need to interact and connect with others.
