Message from Rose

Kia Ora Tatou,

Well what a Term 2! Cultural Fair, 25th Celebrations and Reports - our staff were ready for the July School Holidays!!! We have all returned safely and as we step back into school, the rhythm and groove continues! Some of the teachers attended the MANZ Conference in Taupo and have been reinvigorated to review Culture through a different lense. Our school was fortunate enough to be given a set of Matryoshka Dolls that represent the progression of the Great Stories - a unique way of having students understand their place in the universe. At the Parent Information Evening, Thursday 5 August, the teachers will start with the presentation of the first great story - The Story of the Universe - and this will be followed by a range of connected lessons for you to participate in or observe. It’s been a while since Culture has been presented!

The teachers have continued to work through the progress of sequential Montessori lessons within their classrooms. This is part of our focus on coverage of the scope and sequence of Montessori curriculum aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum. This has been a process started towards the end of 2018 and each year there is a refinement of presentations to ensure that students gain knowledge and understanding that will underpin their learning journey. It works like a spiral - each year revisiting concepts and adding to the depth of knowledge and understanding as they progress through the year levels. The teachers are starting to see the benefits of this process as students move on in their learning. It’s so exciting (and a privilege) to observe students have those ‘aha’ moments that recognise true understanding!!

By now you will know that our principal, Anne Marie Biggs, has resigned. Our Community is indebted to her for the support and guidance she has given us over the 26 years of her Principalship (she’s worked at this school for over 31 years!!!). It was so wonderful to have her speak at our 25th Celebration and share with us her early journey of the start of Montessori within Glendowie School. I know that Montessori holds a special place in her heart and she certainly does in ours!!

9-12 Class Notices

Room 28Kia ora e te whanau.

We are delighted to welcome back the students to Room 28 and hope they are rested, refreshed and raring to go for Term 3. There is certainly another busy term ahead of them! We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Sarah G who joins our class this term. Also to her mum, Annie and her dad, Daniel. We’re excited to have them join our community!

This term, the 5 & 6’s are exploring 'Where We Are In Place and Time' which is an inquiry into how technology has enabled our knowledge of the universe to evolve. Specifically, they will be inquiring into the universe and what it looks like; how knowledge and theories have changed over time and the technological discoveries that have evolved to enable explorations of space. This is a really enjoyable unit of inquiry, in a high interest area and ties in beautifully to our inquiry into rockets from last term. The unit will include a trip to Stardome in the afternoon, on Friday 20th September. Please return the completed permission slip from the letter sent home last week.

For the first few weeks of term 3, the intermediate students will be finishing off their inquiry within the theme ‘How We Express Ourselves’ and we will conclude learning about advertising, persuasive writing as well as how opinions and perceptions can be altered and manipulated through clever marketing. Following on from that, the Year 7 students will revisit the Chemistry Unit and then move onto interest and inquiry based Focus Groups.

The Year 8 students will be focused on their PYP Exhibition this term. This will be presented to parents and the wider community on the afternoon of Tuesday 21st September. The students will identify real-world issues of significance to them and then work as part of a group to find out more about the issue and take meaningful action. This is a unique opportunity for the students and to gain the most benefit from the process they often need support from family to focus their research questions and to identify experts to approach and interview.

Our students have been training for the annual school cross-country event being held this Friday!!! Please remind your child to bring their PE uniforms with them every day.

Calendar Art will be a focus this term so the students will be learning different drawing skills based in geometry and symmetry that will contribute towards the design of their completed piece. These will be able to be viewed in Term 4 when the Glendowie PA runs their fundraiser.

Year 5-7 students will also be preparing for Student Led Conferences which will happen on the morning of Thursday 16th September for Room 28. Please keep an eye out for the letter that will come home with instructions for booking a time.

Page 4: EVENING Monday, 26 July PARENT INFORMATION Parent ...

As discussed during many Parent Teacher Interviews last term, while there is no homework assigned in Montessori classes, occasionally, some work will need to be done at home and many parents asked how they could help at home. Firstly, please support your child in remembering their journal and asking to see it each day. It is an expectation that it is seen and initialled by an adult each day. From what we understand, this is not the message that was coming home from some children! There are often notices in the journal that need to be seen by a caregiver.

Secondly, different ways you can help at home include helping your child learn their spelling words for their quiz. Spelling lessons are on alternate Thursdays so there could be some home quizzing during the week! If your child does not yet know their multiplication and division facts, it would be great if you could help them practise their basic facts for 10 minutes per day at home. It doesn’t have to be writing them out - there are many (free) games you can play orally or online that help with consolidating basic facts. We also highly recommend reading to and with your child every night, even in the senior years. While your child is likely to be a fluent reader at this age already, reading to them models fluency, develops empathy and can help develop critical thinking skills when you stop to discuss what you’ve read.

We’re excited for another fun filled, busy term!

WELCOME to Term 3 of 2021!

Kia Ora Koutou! Welcome back to all our students. We hope you and your whanau had a restful break.

We are delighted to say that those children who joined in Term 2 have already settled into the classroom

routines seamlessly.

This term, our students will be participating in a number of activities alongside their mainstream peers. These

include Cross Country, Runathon, Book Week, and field trips. Calendar art is also due later in the Term.

The year 3 and 4 children have designed and decorated tiles which have been affixed to a 'pou' (land post). This

will be erected outside the classroom, at the entrance to our new outdoor learning space this Friday 6 August

prior to the Cross Country running.

The Year 1 and 2 students continue to inquire into how imagination is used by authors in their stories and have

presented puppet shows to their older peers. They are now having a go at writing their own interpretations of

traditional fairy tales. From week 3 they will move on to a new unit of inquiry about how the Moon, Sun and Earth

impact the way we live, under the theme 'How the World Works'. To support the unit of study, a trip to the

Stardome Observatory will happen later in the term.

The Year 3 and 4 students will continue to design and build their own bridges using the structural principles they

have been studying. Their next unit will be looking into how all living things need to share the environment and

that changes can impact upon the animals that live there. This is under the theme 'Sharing the Planet'. The

students will be looking at habitats, adaptations and our responsibilities towards the environment. This will

include a field trip to Auckland Zoo later in the term.

More information about the field trips will be forthcoming closer to the time.

Library & Chinese are both now on a Tuesday

6-9 Class Notices / Reminders

BirthdaysThe birthday celebration in the Montessori Junior Hub will be celebrated with class members only. This is a change from previous years. There will be no food provided and teachers will work around the daily timetable to celebrate this on the day of the birthday when possible.

Book BagsOur book bags are made by previous Year 4 students and have stood the test of time! They last for the the whole time a student is in the Montessori Junior Class. We ask that you help to ensure that your child takes care of their book bag. They are washable and are used to keep their journal and reading books/logs in. It is important for them to come to school every day.

JournalsIn your child’s journal, a work record is pasted. This is where lessons are recorded and is used to help students choose a variety of work independently. What work a student does can be recorded daily by ticking the appropriate box and for older students they start to record their work with a time beside it. Please note that students are at different abilities to complete this. We encourage the students to write a daily reflection and sharing this with someone at home can be a starting point to discuss the events of the day.Journals are also the mode of communication between parents / teachers and school. School notices are generally stapled into the journal so please remember to check the journal on a daily basis. Please take stapled notices out of the journal and initial the journal every day. This helps the teachers know that the journal has been seen.

PoetryMost weeks your child will have a poem pasted / written in their journal. Your child may not always be able to read the poem independently. Please enjoy reading the poems with your child. Research has shown that rhyme, rhythm and repetition are helpful elements in assisting children’s reading development. Over time they will become familiar with the poems and enjoy going back to their favourite ones and recite many off by heart.

Reading BooksStudents are expected to read at home every day. Students on the colour wheel up to purple should be taking a book home to read with them each day. Please record the book your child has read in the reading log notebook and return both the book and the reading log daily in the book bag. Having your child read aloud to you regularly is a beneficial experience along with reading to your child. Please try to share the reading of books you have at home as often as possible. The students who are past purple are still expected to read daily and may read chapter books from home or may take journals from the classroom. We want reading to be an enjoyable experience for your child and for them to experience success at reading. Please be vigilant about returning any Glendowie School books sent home in book bags.

LibraryYour child is encouraged to issue a library book and read and enjoy it with you at home. All our students are able to be issued 2 books. The books can be returned at any time during the lunch hour or before school. Only if a book is returned, a new one can be issued, therefore please help your child remember to bring their library book on a their set day to avoid any disappointment.

General Reminders

Before / After SchoolStudents are asked to wait on the court if they arrive before 8.30am. When the bell rings at 8.30am the students must walk sensibly to their classroom and unpack their belongings. At the end of the day, please meet your child either on the upper court or at the seating near the top field. If you have a Year 2 child, you are welcome to meet them at their class after the bell has rung. It is a school expectation that students go straight home unless accompanied by their parent.

Forgotten ItemsIf you are dropping off something for your child, please leave it at the main office and they will ensure your child receives it. Please try to keep these to a minimum so as not to disturb the class work cycle.

IndependencePlease help your child develop independence by encouraging them to be responsible for remembering their lunch, journal, book bag and sports uniform if required.

LunchesOur school encourages students to eat healthy lunches and to drink water. We encourage “litterless lunches” so would appreciate the use of recyclable lunch boxes / containers / reusable bags. Sweets / lollies should not come to school. At school we recognise there are a number of students with food allergies, some of which have serious implications. We do not allow children to bring any food to school to share with others including birthday treats such as cakes. If there is food cooked or shared at school as part of the learning programme, class teachers will advise parents of children with known allergies.

Water BottlesWe encourage all students to bring a named water bottle to school for use in the classroom. Water is the only liquid allowed in the classroom.

Meetings & AppointmentsIf you wish to meet with a class teacher you are most welcome to email the Montessori Office or write in your child’s journal to arrange a suitable time. Teachers will liaise around their meeting commitments to accommodate your request. Please do not contact teachers on their personal home or mobile phones unless specifically asked to by the teacher.

Named ClothingWe cannot emphasise enough the importance of NAMING all articles of clothing. This includes togs, rash shirts, towels, shoes, socks, lunchboxes, sports uniform and drink bottles. We have items of clothing left at school every day and it makes it easier to return to the owner if items are named. Please note that socks should be navy blue or black – no other colour should be on them. Also please check your child has brought the correct clothing home. Often, during swimming season, clothing can easily get mixed up!

PunctualityStudents are expected to be in the classroom by 8.55am. It helps them have time to think about their day and what they need to accomplish. Our lessons start at 9:00 am so students need to be ready to start by then. Please ensure your child arrives on time as this assists them in getting ready for the day of learning. If your child is late they must go to the office to collect a late pass.

Sports UniformPlease remember Sports Uniform is compulsory for Year 3 and up. The Sports Uniform is required for all terms. Children can also change into their Sports Uniform at lunch time to play on the school field during the wet months.

KindoAny Glendowie school payments can be made on Kindo.
