Summer Reading Lists for Students
View additional photo’s of this spring’s events on
the district website www.isd2154.k12.mn.us
Reading can be one of the many fun activities children fill their summer time with. Research has shown it is also much more! Children who participate in public library summer reading programs not only avoid the “summer slide” in learning, but also score higher on reading achievement tests than those who did not participate.
The books on the Association for Library Service to Children lists come highly recommended by kid readers from all over the country and may also be available in ebook, audio book, Braille, and large print formats. The lists are available on pages 8-10 of this newsletter.
This summer, encourage your child to participate in the summer programs happening at your library.
Luncheon Honors Volunteers
Eveleth-Gilbert’s Volunteers in Education Program (VinE) celebrated the community and high school volunteers who assisted in various classrooms and the Junior High Homework Help program at a luncheon held in their honor on Tuesday, May 13th, at the Eveleth-Gilbert High School. “It’s a small gesture of thanks for all of the hours donated to our schools throughout the year,” according to Ann Voss, E-G VinE Coordinator. “Our volunteers participated in 24 classrooms and donated almost 600 hours of their time from late Octo-ber to mid-May. That’s a lot of time given by 35 volun-teers.” Along with a lunch, certificates of recognition were also presented to the program volunteers.
“VinE’s first year in the district has been a positive one, and we’re looking forward to making next year’s participation even better,” stated Voss. Some adult and
student volunteers expressed their thoughts about their participation. One volunteer said, “It was really fun and a good experience. I’d like to tutor next year if possible. Another tutor added, “My favorite part of tutoring was working one-on-one with the students. It also helped me decide what to do for a career in my future.” Still another commented, “It was a great experience. I wish I wasn’t graduating so I could do it again.
