Evaluation Question 2How effective is the combination of your main

product and ancillary texts?

Page 2: Evaluation question 2

In terms of ancillary texts I believe that our media product is very effective at advertising our album. The synergy between the digipack, poster and the music video, all come together to create a easily identifiable album, with a unique but also relevant theme to the genre. Due to the genre type there is a certain audience we are marketing to, specifically the post-grunge/alternative metal audience. However, due to the fact that these genres correspond with multiple variations of the metal genre it was important not to be to dependant on one of them. Instead it was our idea to create a generally alternative product. Also, due to our target audience also being younger we applied our knowledge as young people as young people into advertising our product effectively to the younger generation.

When creating our music video we took inspiration from two music videos and then converged the two ideas together. We focused on Paramores ‘Brick by Boring Brick’ and Flyleafs ‘All Around Me’

For our digipack we made it clear that it was fairytale themed. We also hoped to make it clear that we had been inspired by Alice in Wonderland, by the inclusion of playing cards, hearts and teacups.

With the poster we made it obvious that this is a female driven band by only including a woman on the poster. We also used the poster to showcase how dark and mysterious the album will be, with the eerie, dim and muted background. Again we aimed to repent the intersexualisation our product has by placing certain iconography of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ on Faith, who played the ‘Alice’ character. We did this by using a blue dress, which is perhaps one of the most famous icons of that film.

As a whole I think our media product combined creates a clear image of what to expect from the album. The poster and digipack I believe represents what to expect from the video, the darkness, the ‘Alice in Wonderland theme’ and the alternative elements. And then when the video is added to the overall product it creates a clear image as to what the album is like. The combination of the actual song and the video really showcase to the target audience what they will be experiencing when they buy the album. I also think that we managed to crate some synergy between our music video and the one that inspired us, taking even specific shots or themes from them and incorporating them into ours.
