Overview

Options, applications, potential savings, pros and cons

Types of Electric Vehicles

Light Duty

Medium & Heavy

Duty

Range (electric fueled miles) BEV 60 – 100 miles PHEV ~ 10 – 20 miles EREV 35 - 40 miles Tesla ~ 265 miles BMW i3 ER ~ 80 miles Range (gasoline + electric) Same > 500 miles ~ 160 – 380 miles

Types of Electric Vehicles

Types of Plug-in Electric Vehicles

LIGHT DUTY - Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)

BMW i3

THINK CITY

APPLICATIONS: Same as gasoline vehicles

PROS & CONS - Application must match battery or total range

- Highest savings

- Need charging infrastructure

Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREV)

APPLICATIONS: Same as gasoline vehicles PROS & CONS - Smaller E-range but good total range

- Cost savings typically lower than BEV

- Need charging infrastructure (shorter charging times than BEV)

38 miles Electric ~ 380 Total range from $26,685 (after $7,500 federal tax credit)

BMW i3 Rex ( w Range Extender) Cadillac ELR

~ 72 miles electric, ~ 150 miles total From $37,700 after Fed. tax Credit

38 miles Electric ~ 340 total From $67,500 after $7,500 Fed. tax Credit

Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PHEV)

APPLICATIONS: Same as gasoline vehicles PROS & CONS - Smallest E-range (10 – 20 miles) but high total range - Cost savings typically lower than BEV and EREV - Need charging infrastructure (shortest charging time) $29,169 (after $3,751 fed. tax credit) $30,949 (after $3,751 fed. tax credit)

from $27,490 ( after $2,500 fed. tax credit) $36,154 (after $3,626 fed. tax credit).

Summary of EV Benefits HEV vs. PHEV vs. BEV

Light Duty Cars/SUV Example Applications and Savings

Municipal Fleets: Houston, TX- expects to save $110,000 a year by bringing in 27 Nissan Leafs Loveland, CO - found that the BEVs will cost 41 percent less to own and operate than gasoline-powered vehicles. City’s goal is converting all fleet vehicles with daily range < 35 miles and no heavy duty hauling functions to plug-in EVs.

Corporate Fleets: GE - buying 2,000 of the automaker’s plug-in C-Max Energi PHEVs to complement the 3,000 Volts it has ordered. GE employees driving its fleet vehicles average about 100 miles/day Hershey – adding Nissan Leaf vehicles to its corporate fleet as part of its 2015 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 13 percent
