Seek knowledge fromlibraries

Literacy can change not only people’sliving standard but also the status of a family,a small community or the whole society. So,studying literature, seeking literary knowledgeand reading are good habits to cultivate.

The progress of a nation is usuallymeasured by its literacy rate. In this age ofknowledge, literacy yields benefits for a personto be able to read and seek knowledge aboutinternational affairs.

According to the goal of ‘Education forAll’, literacy campaigns are being launched ona constant basis. Thanks to the concertedefforts of regional bodies, education staff, socialorganizations and local people, basic literacycampaigns are meeting with success, and therehas been 94 percent of adult literacy rate.

It is necessary for every literate to havethe habit of reading. Libraries are beingestablished across the nation, the number hasreached over 50,000. More and more librarieswill be opened with the contributions of theState as well as well-wishers and socialorganizations.

This month, new library buildings andlibraries have been opened in Wasu Village ofHpa-an Township, Haikyin Village of KyeekhaTownship, Phuhti Village of MawlamyinegyunTownship, Aungmyintha Village of KalayTownship and Taungletaw Village of NgazunTownship. Furniture, publications and cashwere donated at the library openingceremonies. Measures need to be taken tomaintain those libraries.

It is the national pride and glory to see anincrease in literacy rate. But it is importantthat all literates must keep reading. With theincreasing number of libraries across thenation, the people will broaden their horizonsby cultivating the daily habit of reading.

True patriotism* It is very important for everyone of

the nation regardless of the place helives to have strong Union Spirit.

* Only Union Spirit is the true patri-otism all the nationalities will haveto safeguard.

First stars were massive, fast-spinningLOS ANGELES, 29 April — The first

stars that dotted the universe were notonly immense, but probably also fast-spinning, according to a new studythat sheds light on the nature of stellarevolution.

These early stars died out longago, but astronomers can get a glimpseof what they were like by looking atlater generations of stars.

A team of scientists led by CristinaChiappini of the Astrophysical InstitutePotsdam in Germany reanalyzed data

from the Very Large Telescope of a 12-billion-year-old star cluster. They foundhigh levels of metal in the stars — achemical signature that suggests earliergenerations, perhaps even the first stars, were massive and rotated much fasterthan their present-day counterparts.

This is important because a star thatspins more rapidly can live longer andsuffer different fates than slow-spinningones. Findings appear in Thursday’sissue of the journal Nature.

Microsoft 3Q growthovershadowed by tablet threat

WASHINGTON, 29 April—Even as Microsoft Corp’searnings grow at a robust rate, investors can’t seemto shake the feeling that the boom days are windingdown for the world’s largest software maker.

The company’s fiscal third-quarter results, released Thursday, provided little reassurancedespite a 31 percent increase in earnings, exceedinganalyst estimates. Microsoft shares still dipped.

The main reason for the anxiety: Revenue inthe division that includes Microsoft’s foundation, the Windows operating system, declined from thesame time last year for the second-straight quarter. The slide stems from consumers buying fewerpersonal computers that run the company’ssoftware.

The downturn occurred during the same periodthat rival Apple Inc couldn’t produce enough iPads,a potentially game-changing computer tablet, tomeet the rabid demand.—Internet

Smartphone boom lifts phonemarket in first quarter

HELSINKI, 29 Apri l— Strong demandfor smartphones gave a further boost tooverall cellphone market volumes inJanuary-March, and making iPhonesupplier Apple a rare winner on themarket, research firms said on Friday.

IDC saw January-March marketgrowth of 20 percent, helped also bystrong gains by smaller vendors as thethree largest phone makers Nokia,Samsung Electronics and LG Electronicslost market share.

Apple’s iPhone sales more thandoubled from a year ago, buoyed bystrong sales on Verizon Wireless andadditional carrier deals elsewhere, withmarket share rising to 5 percent.

“The iPhone once again soldparticularly well in developed economicregions of the world, such as NorthAmerica and Western Europe,” IDCsaid.

Apple is now within striking distanceto LG, who had 6.6 percent market sharein the quarter. Nokia’s share dropped to29 percent from 35 percent a year ago, while Samsung slipped to 19 percent,IDC said.

Strategy Analytics estimated handsetshipments grew 17 percent from a yearago, driven by surging smartphonedemand in mature regions andincreasingly popular models withmultiple SIM cards in emerging markets.

“The first quarter of 2011 was markedby supply-chain disruptions related tothe Japan earthquake tragedy and byongoing mild component constraints inareas such as touchscreens, memoryand cameras,” said Neil Mawston, analystat Strategy Analytics.

Mawston said component shortageswould continue for at least the next 6 to9 months, causing restricted volumes orrising input prices, but operationalchallenges from this would remain minorfor most manufacturers.

CERN marks advance in universemysteries search

GENEVA, 29 April—Scientists at the CERN physics research centre reportedon Friday that they had smashed particles together at a record intensity in a keyadvance in their programme to unveil mysteries of the universe.

The development came in the early hours after they fed beams into thegiant Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with some 6 percent more particles perunit than the previous record, set by the US Fermilab’s Tevatron collider lastyear.

Each collision in the LHC’s 27-kilometre (16.8 mile) circular undergroundtunnel — at a tiny fraction under the speed of light — creates a simulation ofthe Big Bang which brought the universe into existence 13.7 billion years ago.

The higher the “beam intensity” or number of particles in each beam, themore collisions take place and the more material the scientists have to analyze. Many millions of these mini-Big Bangs are already being produced daily.

China bans smoking in public venuesin theory

BEIJING, 29 April— China launchesa ban on smoking in indoor publicspaces Sunday but the effort is widelyviewed as vague and half-hearted andfew expect it to have much of animpact in the tobacco-addicted country.

The nationwide prohibition isdesigned to bring China — which hasmore than 300 million smokers, roughlyequal to the entire population of theUnited States — more in line with healthregulations in developed countries.

But it faces a tough test.Tobacco use is deeply ingrained

in China, where offering a cigarette isa common greeting ritual. Lighting upin elevators or even hospital waitingrooms is routine and second-handsmoke is considered a serious health

threat.“I don’t think this ban on smoking

will have a big effect,” Yang Lei, a 32-year-old Beijinger who has beensmoking for four years, told AFP.

“In China, when you are in arestaurant, people smoke even if thereis a ‘No Smoking’ sign. When you eatwith friends, few people ask others ifit’s OK to smoke and restaurantmanagers rarely stop clients whosmoke.”

Many health experts have warnedthat China, the world’s largest producerand consumer of tobacco, faces aticking health timebomb unless it curbssmoking, and the ban marks asignificant move for the Chinesegovernment.—Internet
