Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Local Organising Committee and the German Society forClinical Nutrition (DGEM) we would like to invite you to the 35th ESPENCongress 2013 held for the second time in Leipzig. Some of you may havealready participated at the 10th Congress in Leipzig in 1988. Since then Europehas changed tremendously. 25 years on, we are grateful to have theopportunity once again to host the ESPEN Congress in Leipzig and to sharewith you this “wind of change”.

The city of Leipzig in the former GDR was the origin of the peaceful revolutionin 1989, which was the beginning of “Freiheit” (freedom) and the reunificationof Germany. This historical background creates the theme for the Congress:““TTeeaarriinngg ddoowwnn bbaarrrriieerrss –– nnuuttrriittiioonn bbrriinnggss ppeeooppllee ttooggeetthheerr””.. You can expect aninteresting, broad and open-minded programme, offering both updated andcutting-edge science, as well as clinical practice.

As a Congress venue, Leipzig offers a lot: one of the most modern Congresssites in Germany, a superb infrastructure, and all the charms of an adorable cityin which you can enjoy your leisure time.

The city of Leipzig has a rich heritage in both music and the performing arts.Names like Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy areinseparably linked to the city. The “Gewandhaus” Concert Hall is home to aworld-class Orchestra known for its excellence in classical music performances. In addition, one of the oldest and most famous German Boys`Choirs, the“Thomanerchor” of the St. Thomas Church, celebrated its 800th anniversary in2012. Its most famous choirmaster was from 1723 to 1750 none other thanJohann Sebastian Bach.

The people of Leipzig will be delighted to welcome participants from all overthe world, to share and exchange ideas, and to make their guests feel at home.

We hope to see you in Leipzig in 2013.

The Local Organising CommitteeArved Weimann, President of the ESPEN 2013 CongressStephan C. Bischoff, Chairperson Scientific Committee and President DGEMMatthias Pirlich, Chairperson Educational and Clinical Practice Committee

So there are numerous ways of getting toLeipzig, including the Leipzig/Halle airport. Its schedule includes direct flights from/to bigEuropean cities such as London, Istanbul, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan or Vienna as wellas some long distances destinations.

Visitors who come to Leipzig for a conference will hopefully be able to spend some leisurelyhours and dive into the charms and attractions of the host city: the unique flair, the wholevariety of things to do and to see: from the concert in the Gewandhaus Concert Hall to arelaxed pub crawl in the evening. Visitors should not miss the architectural gems ofRenaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau, the openness and hospitality of Leipzig people. There are only few cities which have such a rich musical tradition as Leipzig. Johann SebastianBach was the choirmaster of St. Thomas Church from 1723 to 1750. The house where FelixMendelssohn Bartholdy died can be visited in Leipzig. The story of Robert and ClaraSchumann is inseparably linked with Leipzig, and Richard Wagner was born in the city in1813.
