Advancing International Knowledge Transfer

INTRODUCTIONERES 2011 is the eighth international conference in theseries on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structuresorganised by the Wessex Institute of Technology. Themeeting provides a unique forum for the discussionof basic and applied research in the various fields

of earthquake engineering relevant to the design ofstructures. The importance and actuality of the workpresented at these meetings is reflected by the increasingnumber of major earthquakes that are taking place allover the world.

The conference began in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1997;followed by Catania, Italy (1999); Malaga, Spain (2001);Ancona, Italy (2003); Skiathos, Greece (2005); Bologna,Italy (2007) and Cyprus (2009). The papers presented atthose meetings are now available in the Wessex InstituteeLibrary (http://library.witpress.com)

This conference aims to discuss the state of the artin structures subjected to earthquakes, includingthe geophysical aspects, the behaviour of historicalbuildings, seismic isolation, retrofitting, base isolationand energy absorption systems, as well as a wide rangeof applications and case studies, partially described inthe conference topics.

The problem of protecting the built environment inearthquake-prone regions of the world involves not onlythe optimal design and construction of new facilities, butalso the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structuresand infrastructures in heritage buildings. The inestimableloss of life and the colossal costs following a majorearthquake in a metropolitan area provides sufficientreason for the scientific and technical communitiesto respond to the challenges. It also emphasises theimportance of this conference.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDINGConference papers are peer-reviewed by membersof the International Scientific Advisory Committeeand other colleagues. Papers are rapidly processedfor publication in hard-cover and digital book form.

The books are available to delegates at registrationand are also widely distributed throughout the worldby WITPress.

Papers are also available in digital format to theinternational scientific community through the WessexInstitute eLibrary http://library.witpress.com

Conference participants will be invited to submit anextended version of their paper to the International

Journal of Safety and Security Engineering or the

International Journal of Sustainable Development

and Planning associated with WIT.

Papers presented at Wessex Institute conferences

appear regularly in notable reviews, publications anddatabases.

The opportunity to present your research withina unique forum and collaborate with experts fromaround the world.

OPEN ACCESSParticipants who opt to have their paper permanentlyand openly accessible in the Wessex Institute eLibrarywill receive a USB Flash Drive containing all the paperspresented at previous conferences in this series.

We strongly believe that removing barriers to research

published online will greatly aid progress in manyscientific and technical disciplines.

Journal SubmissionDelegates attending ERES 2011 will be invitedto submit an expanded version of their paper forpublication in the International Journal of Safety and

Security Engineeringor the International Journal ofSustainable Development and Planning, associatedwith the Wessex Institute of Technology.

Advancing International Knowledge Transfer

Papers are invited on the topics outlined and others fallingwithin the scope of the meeting. Abstracts of no more than300 words should be submitted as soon as possible. Westrongly encourage the submission of abstracts online.

Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results and

conclusions of the work to be described in the final paper.Final acceptance will be based on the full-length paper, which if accepted for publication, must be presented at theconference. To be fair to all participants, each registereddelegate will only be able to submit one paper.

The language of the conference will be English.
