LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed Him your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into His Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess Him as Lord and Saviour; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 42 beginning at the 1st verse Thus says the Lord, “Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him, he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not fail or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: "I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no

other, nor my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them." Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 89: 20-29

20 I have found David my servant; * with my holy oil have I anointed him.

21 My hand will hold him fast * and my arm will make him strong.

22 No enemy shall deceive him, * nor any wicked man bring him down.

23 I will crush his foes before him * and strike down those who hate him.

24 My faithfulness and love shall be with him, * and he shall be victorious through my Name.

25 I shall make his dominion extend * from the Great Sea to the River.

26 He will say to me, ‘You are my Father, * my God, and the rock of my salvation.’ 27 I will make him my firstborn * and

higher than the kings of the earth. 28 I will keep my love for him for ever, *and my covenant will stand firm for

him. 29 I will establish his line for ever* and

his throne as the days of heaven.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 10 beginning at the 34th verse. And Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. Reader: Here ends the Reading All: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you

And also with you

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness and preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased."

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook New Year Greetings:

Our initiation into the christian church would have consisted of baptism, confirmation and making our communion for the first time.

That baptism would have been one of the most significant events undertaken for us by our parents and God-parents.

From quite early in the tradition the christians used baptism as the means by which persons would become members of Christ, children of God and heirs of God’s eternal kingdom as set out clearly in the Book of Common Prayer by Thomas Cranmer.

As recorded in the Acts of the Apostles when Peter delivered the sermon on the Feast of Pentecost, those listening questioned him on what sort of response would be appropriate,

And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38

The Apostles themselves had noted the importance of baptism when they identified the qualifications for Apostleship in order to elect someone to replace Judas. Such a person had to be

one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us -- one of these men must

become w i t h u s a w i t ne s s t o h i s resurrection.” Acts 1: 21 - 22

Jesus’ baptism by John the baptizer was clearly a momentous event in the life of his early followers, some of whom were previous disciples of John in the first place. (See John 1: 35-37).

The christian church throughout the world today then celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus.

It was that single event that marked the start of his public ministry and demonstrated the epiphany that he was the eternal Son of God.

Baptism for us with the symbolic use of water signifies not only the mystical washing away of sin; but marks our incorporation into the church.

Parents and God parents are asked continuously to take baptism seriously as its connectedness to the teaching of Christ and the biblical text in general benefits not only the individual but the society as well, as we commit ourselves to wholesome christian living.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector
