THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Letter to Peter Chapter 1 beginning at the 16th verse. We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased," we heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

At that time after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves; and he was transfigured before them, and his garments became glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Eli'jah with Moses; and they were talking to Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli'jah." For he did not know what to say, for they were exceedingly afraid. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is my beloved Son; listen to him." And suddenly looking around they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of man should have risen from the dead.

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

With today being the Last Sunday after the Epiphany we have come to the end of the Christmas Cycle and we are moving towards the Easter renewal of Baptismal vows.

Our preparation for Easter begins on Wednesday of this week Ash-Wednesday, when we are marked with the sign of the cross on our foreheads as a symbol of our repentance and our preparedness to renew our Baptismal Vows at the Great Vigil of Easter.

Professor Patrick Regan tells is in an excellent paper entitled “The Three Days and the Fortieth Day” that the purpose and character of Lent are entirely derived from the great festival for which it prepares.

Regan goes on to say that the Pasch is not only an annual celebration of the passion and passage of Christ, but that was for Christians of the fourth and fifth centuries the yearly reminder of their own incorporation into the paschal event through baptism.

The Lenten endeavor engages us fully primarily in two ways. We seek to enter into the contemplation of the meaning of our spiritual journey pondering on the deeper meaning of the sacraments to us personally and spiritually.

Equally we sent our minds on the meaning and purpose of the Paschal Mystery, Christ’s crucifixion,

resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

In the prior sense we seek to amend our lives by perhaps doing away with harmful practices that may be getting in the way of our relationship with God. Our lenten discipline is not simply to give up activities during the forty days only to take them up again when we reach the fifty days of Easter.

By giving up harmful habits we are determining that we do not need them as requirements for our lives; but rather we may assume some particular act of mercy or compassion such as volunteering our time to help the less fortunate.

Again by recalling the mighty acts of Christ in the Paschal Mystery we delve into the implications of what it means to be baptised into Christ Jesus according to Romans 6: 3- 8.

May the love of Christ be with us in this coming Lenten season and moved with the deepest compassion may our lenten journey lead us closer to our Lord and God.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Lenten devotion Stations of the Cross will be offered on Friday evenings in Lent at 6:00pm. Persons are asked to sacrifice one hour to attend this special liturgy.

ST. DAVID’S DAY There will be Solemn Evensong Sermon & Procession at 6:00pm on Sunday March 1, 2015, St. David’s Day. All organisations are to attend in their respective uniforms and carry the banners in procession.

COMPUTER CLASSES There will be an advanced class in Desktop Publishing for those who have completed the Basic programme starting on Thursday, 5th March, 2015. Registration forms are available from the ushers.

DVD OF THE CONCERT DVDs of the concert held in August 2014 are available from Mrs. Cynthia Reid at $30:00 each.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness.

According to the American National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia.

Dementia describes a set of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.

It is true that the majority of people with Alzheimer's are 65 and older but Alzheimer's is not just a disease of old age. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early onset Alzheimer's (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s.

Unfortunately Alzheimer's has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues in hope of finding effective ways to prevent and treat it. One such area of research is the use of coconut oil in one’s diet.

In her 2011 book, “Alzheimer ’s disease: What If There Was a Cure? The Story of Ketones,” Dr. Mary Newport fervently declares that her husband has shown clear improvement in his dementia with regular use of coconut oil. There has been and continues to be much debate worldwide about the validity of such a claim but persons are giving it a try.
