2. Description of the mural art
This mural art represents a juxtaposition that convey elements of unity, strength in diversity and congruence of purpose among the Malaysians.
It aims for Malaysians have to responsible to bring the nation towards a brighter future.

The military soldier shows an expression of wariness for what he is going to face in order to help Malaysia achieve its independence.

First Impression
The first thing that captured my eyes was the tiger hat and the boy looking down. I thought he was eating but then after some research I found out that he was actually holding an iPad that symbolises the progression of our nation.

This mural art is the largest single graffiti in Malaysia and with it’s strategic location in Raja Chulan and bold colours captures the attention of the public, especially the tiger hat that symbolises strength in our country.

The boy in the painting is smiling with a hopeful expression while playing with an iPad symbolising the spirit of progression in our nation.

It is clearly shown in the mural art that a young boy at the approximate age of 6 is smiling happily at an object he is holding .

The word “brave” printed on the boy’s shirt conveys a message of the strength and courage of the country to move forward as a united nation.

- Hearing and Speech disabilities as his mother suffered from german measles while she was pregnant with him.
- Never took art lessons but picked up drawing skills by watching videos and trying to paint on canvas.
- 2nd Place at the Malaysian-Japanese Art Competition and Exhibition in 2003. He was 16.
- Favourite medium was acrylic paint and watercolour.

“Children Playing basketball”
Located at Gat Lebuh Chulia, just the street of old Kwong Wah Yit Poh building
It was completed just a few days after Gan did his first mural, Brother & Sister on a Swing.
Louis Gan found himself embroiled in a controversy, being accused of not using heritage-friendly paint and for painting walls without approval from the authorities (even though he was invited to paint the wall by its owner)

First Impression
The girl smiling cheerfully about to catch the ball, but the ball is way out of alignment of the action presented by the mural.

We see them as common healthy and active children enjoying sporty activity in their free time.

The mural art it is about children playing basketball but in fact its shows the artist lack in perfection skill as the ball movement and the girl catching action are out of alignment.

“Active” the word shown by the children. Its is incredible that a girl that age able to jump that high.

2. Description of the mural artBROTHER & SISTER
➢ Located Off Chulia Street Ghaut, Step By Step Lane, in George Town, Penang.
➢ Completed on 14 November 2012
➢ Depicts a brother and sister balancing on the swings. Louis Gan’s own interpretation of childhood in Penang.
➢ Shows the intimacy of sibling relationships revealing the close relationship Louis Gan has with his brother, Gan Yee Chun.
➢ Relates to his family who has always valued family closeness.

➢ Did not use heritage-friendly paint and failed to get the approval from the local authorities.
➢ His brother, Gan Yee Chun, defended Louis in a debate about this issue.
