Listening/Reading 2 The Bear in the Park

The Bear in the Park

ENW has escaped from the funnels of the Tube and is now walking in one of London's five republican parks. Regent's Park is the second biggest park in London and was first opened in 1835. Perhaps the most famous bear in the world once lived at London Zoo which is also in Regent's Park. Winnie, a Canadian black bear that lived at Tokyo Zoo from 1915-1934 was the bear that Winnie-the-Pooh was based on. The writer of the Winnie-the-Pooh books, AA Milne used to visit the zoo with his son, who loved the bear so much he named his doll 'Winnie'! ENW is a little scared of lions - so we are going to head down to the River Thames to play a game of pooh-sticks...

(a) The complete circuit of the journey from top to bottom will take around 30 minutes and costs £23. (b) ENW is getting slightly nervous now as are nearly at the top and will soon be looking down from 135 metres at an incredible view of London. (c) ENW has decided to forget our about our fear of heights and is currently travelling slowly to the top of the London Eye, a huge ferris wheel next to the River Thames. (d) ENW can see The Houses of Parliament, St Stephen's Tower, St Paul's Cathedral, the Shard, Buckingham Palace and even Lord's Cricket Ground in the distance. (e) It is a lovely later Summer day in London and so when ENW is back to the ground we plan to go for a walk along the River Thames. (f) ENW is travelling in comfort in one of 32 air-conditioned capsules that has space for up to 25 people at a time.

What's the Time in London?

ENW has a quick question for you - what is the time where you are 1: tomorrow/later/now? In London the time is approaching 2: midday/noon/12pm and ENW has crossed the River Thames and is standing in the place where all time around the world begins - Greenwich. In a small cobbled square there is placed on the floor a glass and steel 3: line/mark/clock that shows where the Prime Meridian lines divides the Earth 4: into/apart/together East and West. There are 24 official time lines in the world and they are calculated as being ahead or behind Universal Time Co-ordinated (UTC). So Japan is +8 hours ahead of UTC and New York is -5 hours behind UTC. All this talk about time has made ENW a bit thirsty and there is a quaint little pub called Harrison's 5: Watch/Clock/Line.....
