PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Cabrillo High School is doing “Whatever it Takes!” to ensure that our students experience a challenging and rigorous standards-based education,

with real world application, and multiple opportunities for work-based learning. Along with offering several accelerated and Advanced Placement

courses, we also have a Project Lead the Way certified engineering program, a California Partnership Law Academy, a Port of Long Beach Global

Trade and Logistics program, and are certified as a California Democracy school. We have designed our school around four secondary specialized

and two non-specialized Linked Learning and National Academy Foundation Career Pathways. These Smaller Learning Communities provide

SMALL LEARNING COMMUNITIES and LINKED LEARNING/NAF CAREER PATHWAYS

Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics at Cabrillo (AGL) focuses on careers in global logistics and supply chain management; global logistics is defined as the design and management of a system that directs and controls the flows of materials into, through, and across

national borders. AGL is a member of the National Academy Foundation (NAF) and works in direct partnership with the Port of Long

Beach, LBCC, and CSULB. NAF is a national network of career academies that services over 50,000 students in the U.S. Students will

have hands-on experiences in this field inside and outside of the classroom. Through partnerships with local colleges and industry partners,

students will be exposed to the various pathways leading from Cabrillo to the world of finance, global logistics, and supply chain management.

Cabrillo Academy of Law & Justice (CAL-J) provides students with the opportunity to explore the fields of legal studies, criminal

justice, or law enforcement; through a series of rigorous and thematic classes focused on topics and issues relevant to the pathway. Students’

progress through a sequence of advanced technical courses and work-based learning opportunities such as Teen Court and Mock Trial, Law

Week, professional mentorships, and internships. The legal studies pathway is now a California Partnership Academy with support from

the Long Beach and California Bar Associations and Los Angeles Superior Court. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.2 and

Cabrillo Engineering & Design (CED) is designed for students who have an interest in math and science and want to be able to “Think,

Create and Build” like an engineer. Our program is nationally recognized as a Certified Project Lead The Way Program, which allows for

engineering students to earn college credit while in high school. CED students are also provided with multiple hands-on experiences including

GEMS, Women in STEM events, Team American Rocket Challenge, Vex Robotics team, First Robotics team, Cyber-patriot team, and

electric car racing team. The CED program works directly with Matson Navigation, Jacobs Engineering and Tesoro. Applicants must have

Health Occupations and Careers (CHOC) is committed to providing students with a rigorous academic program incorporating the A-G

requirements with a technical focus on careers in the medical field. CHOC students have the opportunity to explore the world of high demand

careers in health and human services through various Project Lead The Way courses in the Bio-Medical field, and by connecting with guest

experts in the industry, job shadowing, and internship opportunities. CHOC students also have the opportunity to earn college credit through

Long Beach City College while in high school.

Specialized Academy of Computer Media, Arts and Animation (SACMAA) is designed for students who have a passion for animation,

filmmaking, web publishing and Computer Media. This program allows students to continually develop their skills within one of the two

University Scholars prepares Cabrillo's brightest, most academically driven students to sustain at least a 3.0 GPA while taking a rigorous

course of study, including several selections of Accelerated, Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Beyond the academic challenge,

University Scholars' is focused on leadership training, while receiving support through student advisory groups, after-school tutorials, with

university tours and guest speakers. Our mission is to ensure our University Scholars are prepared for a successful transition to college

CAMS PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The California Academy of Mathematics and Science (CAMS) is a comprehensive four-year high school located on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). CAMS’ mission is to increase the nation’s pool of college graduates in the fields of science, math, engineering, and technology (STEM) by offering an intensive college-preparatory education to motivated high school students. It serves a diverse student body of 685 students, who earn transferable university credit in grades 11 and 12 by taking college courses through CSUDH. Upon graduation, CAMS students have completed an average of 22 units of university credit.

The required CAMS curriculum, which includes Engineering and Biotechnology pathways, far exceeds the

University of California admission requirements, including interdisciplinary projects that focus on real-world problem solving and collaboration, as well as internship opportunities.

Nearly all students go on to four-year universities immediately following high school graduation. College admission staff actively recruit CAMS students. More than 60 colleges and universities provide CAMS with recruitment site visits each year. CAMS offers an excellent education for high school students considering careers in the STEM fields.

Students submit the Application for High School / Secondary Specialized Programs via ParentVUE using the School of Choice tab. In 2016, CAMS received over 900 applications for 175 openings in grade nine.

Merit Scholars | As a Secondary Specialized Program, Merit Scholars is a rigorous college preparatory program committed

to preparing students for entrance into a 4-year college/university. In preparing students for higher education, the Merit

Scholars curriculum exceeds the UC/CSU A-G admission requirements. Students are required to take a minimum of five

Advanced Placement courses. Accepted applicants will be placed in Accelerated or Honors classes to benefit from a

college preparatory curriculum given by experienced teachers committed to academic and individual development.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Minimum SBAC score of 2490 in math and English, a 3.3 GPA, and be eligible for geometry upon entrance.

Applied Technology Magnet | (ATM) This Secondary Specialized Program is aimed at extending students’ experiences with

technology through the study of informatics: the practice of information processing and the engineering of information

systems. Students will make connections between the world of technology and all aspects of their life, from social media to

big data. They will consider the interactions between humans and information systems and how both have been shaped by

the continual evolution of technology. ATM gives students the knowledge, hands on training and opportunities to prepare

students for some of the fastest growing industries globally. ATM is currently offering concurrent enrollment with Long Beach

City College where students may acquire high school and college credit simultaneously.

Knights | Another Secondary Specialized Program, Knights acts as the gateway to all that is good at Lakewood. Students

who are committed to learning have the opportunity to get priority admission into Lakewood’s non-specialized pathways.

Students should be willing to commit to the high standards found throughout our pathways and be motivated to learn in an

enriched industry themed environment. If your interests lie in front of, or behind the camera, the Knights Digital Media,

Arts & Communications will help students stay focused with skills for tomorrow’s digital age. Those interested in medical

professions and sports medicine find their prescription within Knights Health Occupations and Sports Medicine. Finally,

Knights Odyssey is another entry point to earn priority admission into Lakewood’s most established pathway; this program

Digital Media Arts & Communication | (DMAC) Capturing the world through your lens, the Digital Media Academy’s

mission is to increase student’s creativity and technical expertise through film, photography and graphic design and to

integrate rigorous curriculum that will prepare students to pursue their talents in a complex ever-changing world. Graduates

of the DMAC pathway will be able to understand the process and role of design and visual communication in historical and

contemporary contexts from both sides of the camera. Students will develop and sharpen these skills that require teamwork,

discipline, organization, accountability, and attention to the creative process. DMAC is host to Lakewood’s visual and

performing arts.

Odyssey Academy is a creative and academically challenging program, which provides cross-curricular projects and field

trips with a focus on marine industry careers. Odyssey is committed to advancing the total personal and academic literacy

of students by preparing them for success at the university level and on their path to a career. Our time-tested marine related

curriculum incorporate 21st Century Skills that promote learning real world skills at a personal and public level essential for

living in a global community. The ocean theme is seen both inside the classroom and through Odyssey’s Worked based

learning experiences at research labs, community partners, and aquariums.

Health Occupations and Sports Medicine | (HOSM) is specifically designed for students with a passion for healthcare or

sports medicine. The highly specialized and rigorous science curriculum is infused throughout to meet the academic and

career needs of students interested in health, wellness, and medical careers complete with work based learning

experiences. Students will have many opportunities to develop various skills and gain certifications through challenging

hands-on, real world, academic and technical classes. HOSM will provide the necessary tools for students to succeed in a

four year university, a two year college, a vocational/technical school or a career straight out of high school.

Three Pathways - One Vision McBride High School has three pathways, Engineering, Health-

Medical, and Criminal Justice and Investigation. All three

pathways engage students around their interests, find relevant

connections to real world activities, and gauge student learning

through collaborative, hands-on projects. All three pathways prepare

students for the demands of college and the workforce. With

workplace learning experiences in their senior

year, all three

pathways empower and inspire students to make their own path and

determine their own future.

Open to all Students in LBUSD There is no attendance boundary for

McBride; all interested students

should apply through the district

School of Choice process. The 2017-

18 school year will see 210 freshman

accepted.

A Unique Experience McBride High School looks and feels

different than any other high school

you have seen. With career labs and specialized spaces for

collaboration, students will demonstrate what they have learned

through integrated projects, team collaboration, and

connections with industry partners. Teachers will also work

as a team to meet the needs of individual students and create

a coherent educational experience. With learning centered on

a career-themed course of study, students will see the

connections between the theme of their pathways and the

academic disciplines of history, science, math and English.

While there are no sports teams at McBride, there are lots of clubs

and activities for students outside of the classroom.

Challenging Academics All three McBride pathways are focused on completing the UC and

CSU Entrance Requirements (a-g) with a sequence of courses that

are aligned to college expectations. Advanced Placement (AP)

courses and options to earn college credits and industry certifications

upon graduation will be offered in the upper grades.

McBride Engineering With a four-year engineering sequence of courses, students will

design new and innovative products using industry standard

CAD/CAM software and CNC machining processes. Students will

learn math, science, history, and English in

the context of the engineering

development process. Using the nationally recognized and locally

tested Project Lead the Way engineering curriculum, students will

graduate from McBride Engineering with

demonstrated manufacturing and design skills and a

strong understanding of the variety of engineering

career and college options. Along the way, students

will experience the joy of creating something new,

moving from concept to reality. Minimum requirement: 3.0 or

better GPA and enrollment in, and satisfactory completion of, the

McBride Health – Medical Focusing on the health sciences, as well as

skills that are useful in all health and medical

professions, students will take a four-year sequence of courses that

includes Health Concepts and Careers, Medical terminology, AP

Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology, and a Simulation lab with

Internship. Health-Medical courses provide the cornerstone for

interdisciplinary projects in all four years. Students earn CPR and

first aid certification with the ability to participate in Teen CERT

training. Students will apply their learning to practical experiences

through community partnerships and participate in activities in the

health lab classroom that incorporate diagnostic tools and treatment

McBride Criminal Justice and Investigation Supported by a Crime Lab, a Police Academy Lab, Teen Court and

outdoor physical training, the McBride Criminal Justice and

Investigation pathway will provide a crime scene context throughout

the student’s four-year experience. With simulated crime scenes and

interactions with professionals, students will understand the

foundations of the criminal justice and legal systems, the science

behind CSI, and the expectations of a future in law enforcement and

criminology. Students will see the connections between math,

science, history, and English as important components of the

Advanced Placement (AP), Honors, and Accelerated courses throughout their time at Millikan. The program places an emphasis on standards-based instruction while using the arts as a vehicle for helping students to develop a sociological perspective that will allow them to gain a better understanding of

QUEST is a community of GATE and high achieving students. The program provides a pathway of honors and Advanced Placement courses designed for gifted students who want to excel and compete academically with the best and brightest students in the nation. Each year QUEST students gain admission and

earn scholarships to top universities through the United States. The accelerated curriculum also offers the unique experience of a UC approved Senior Project

class linked to student-selected career pathways. QUEST students are active participants in extra and co-curricular activities including sports, the arts, community service, local university programs, and student government. Millikan Business Academy (MBA) is a smaller learning community that promotes essential life skills and college preparedness with a particular emphasis

on entrepreneurship, marketing, enterprise, and financial independence. Students will learn sound business practices and principles while developing and

compiling professional portfolios. Students gain essential technology skills and an awareness of the benefits of volunteering. As a capstone to the MBA curriculum, seniors will enroll in the Virtual Enterprise class, gaining experience by running a virtual business and networking with other schools. Students

will leave the Academy with skills and a personal vision of how to bring their career and personal goals to fruition as civic-minded and ethical participants in

Millikan Integrated Technology (MIT) is a four-year college preparatory program with dual technology pathways including graphic design and information technologies. SATO PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Enhancing College and Career Readiness through STEM education for Engineering and Biomedical Sciences for all students.

The Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science is a comprehensive, four-year high school located near the campus of California State

University, Long Beach (CSULB). Sato’s mission is to increase the nation’s pool of college graduates in the fields of Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Math (STEM) by offering an intensive college-preparatory education to motivated high school students. It serves public

and private schools both in and near Long Beach. Students can earn transferable university credit by taking college courses through CSULB

for a nominal fee. Sato’s program utilizes Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum for Engineering and Biomedical Science pathways.

Upon graduation, Sato students will have had the opportunity to complete many units of university credit. The required curriculum for Sato

far exceeds the University of California admission requirements, and we encourage all students to go on to college immediately following

high school graduation. All students engage in foundational coursework in both Engineering and Biomedical Science, with the option to

focus on either or both pathways over the course of their high school experience. Activities and clubs are accessible to all students to gain a

greater understanding and hands on experience in both career pathways. Interested students apply to Sato through ParentVue during grade eight. Students submit the LBUSD High School Choice application,

online through the parent’s ParentVue account.

Woodrow Wilson High School provides a challenging and supportive academic experience to prepare students for success in college or careers. Established in 1926, the

home of Bruins has been recognized as one of the top high schools in the United States by Newsweek, the Washington Post, and US News and World Report. Our

academic offering is diverse and rigorous with over 27 Advanced Placement courses, including the prestigious AP Capstone program. Additionally, the class of 2016 earned $25.1 million in scholarships. WAVE is LBUSD’s most rigorous program with a multidisciplinary focus for high achieving students. Each year WAVE graduates gain admission to the nation’s most prestigious universities including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Berkley, Boston College, University of Pennsylvania, and

Georgetown. WAVE students are a cohort within their English, History, Math, Science, and Capstone classes. The WAVE experience allows students the opportunity to graduate high school with enough college credits to start college as a sophomore. This opportunity is due to WAVE students taking

a minimum of 10 Advanced Placement courses over 4 years. Minimum requirements: GPA of 3.7 from 6th and 7th grades and a grade of B or higher

in Algebra 1. WAVE admits 175-185 students with the highest GPA that select WAVE as their first choice.

School of Leadership and Public Service Leadership and Public Service students experience 4 years of integrated academics focused on the Public

School of Technology (Project Lead the Way): Computer Science students experience 4 years of integrated academics focused on the Information and Communication Technology industry. In addition to completing rigorous A-G courses, students take a 4 year course sequence of classes

specifically focused on the skills and situations connected to the industry. These courses include: Introduction to Computer Science, Computer Science

Principles, Computer Science A, and a senior year specialization. Working with their academic classes and larger community, students are expected to practice their skills outside the classroom with internships, jobs, and volunteer opportunities. Any interested student is welcome to apply to the

pathway. Students interested in the DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR pathway experience may apply with a minimum GPA of 3.3 and a grade of C

or higher in Algebra 1.

School of the Arts Performing and Visual Artists experience 4 years of integrated academics focused on the Arts, Media, and Entertainment industry.

In addition to completing rigorous A-G courses, artists will take a 4 year course sequence of classes in the same art field (Music, 2-D Design, Visual

Arts, Theatre Arts, Dance, Video Production) as well as train in a secondary field their junior and senior years. Working with their academic classes

and larger community, students are expected to practice their skills outside the classroom with internships, jobs, and volunteer opportunities. Any

interested student is welcome to apply to the pathway. Students interested in the DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR pathway experience may apply

with a minimum GPA of 3.3 and a grade of C or higher in Algebra 1.
