THE QUICK ENNEAGRAM SORTING TEST
GROUP 1
A. I have tended to be fairly independent and assertive: Ivefelt that life works best when you meet it head-on. I set my
own goals, get involved, and want to make things happen. I
dont like sitting around I want to achieve something big and
have an impact. I dont necessarily seek confrontations, but I
dont let people push me around, either. Most of the time Iknow what I want, and I go for it. I tend to work hard and to
play hard.

B. I have tended to be quiet and am used tobeing on my own. I usually dont draw muchattention to myself socially, and its generally
unusual for me to assert myself all that
forcefully. I dont feel comfortable taking thelead or being as competitive as others. Many
would probably say that Im something of a
dreamera lot of my excitement goes on in
my imagination. I can be quite content
without feeling I have to be active all the time.

C. I have tended to be extremelyresponsible and dedicated. I feel terrible if Idont keep my commitments and do whats
expected of me. I want people to know that
Im there for them and that Ill do what Ibelieve is best for them. Ive often made great
personal sacrifices for the sake of others,
whether they know it or not. I often dont take
adequate care of myselfI do the work that
needs to be done and relax (and do what I
really want) if theres time left.

GROUP 2
X. I am a person who usually maintains a positiveoutlook and feels that things will work out for the
best. I can usually find something to be enthusiastic
about and different ways to occupy myself. I like
being around people and helping others to be happy
I enjoy sharing my own well-being with them. (I
dont always feel great, but I try not to show it toanyone!) However, staying positive has sometimes
meant that Ive put off dealing with my own
problems for too long.

Y. I am a person who has strong feelings aboutthingsmost people can tell when Im unhappy
about something. I can be guarded with people, but
Im more sensitive than I let on. I want to know
where I stand with others and who and what I can
count onits pretty clear to most people where
they stand with me. When Im upset about
something, I want others to respond and to get as
worked up as I am. I know the rules, but I dont wantpeople telling me what to do. I want to decide for
myself.
-

Z. I tend to be self-controlled and logicalIam uncomfortable dealing with feelings. I am
efficient- even perfectionisticand prefer
working on my own. When there are problems
or personal conflicts, I try not to bring myfeelings into the situation. Some say Im too
cool and detached, but I dont want my
emotional reactions to distract me fromwhats really important to me. I usually dont
show my reactions when others get to me.

WHAT CAN THE ENNEAGRAMOFFER YOU?
-

14/60
Personal development
The Enneagram types are not made up of lists of charactertraits, but are founded on a persons core values. Each typerepresents a fundamental decision about what is mostimportant in life - such as power, security, harmony, knowledge or fulfillment. This decision is a two-edged
sword: focusing on any of these important values enablesus to make a valuable contribution in many areas of life;but it also causes us to neglect other values, creating apsychological blind spot that limits our perspective andprevents us from developing beyond a certain point.
Identifying your Enneagram type can show you this blindspot and open up unexpected options for change. It canhelp you break long standing patterns that have beenholding you back, sometimes without your realizing it.

Professional development
Whether or not knowing your strengths andweaknesses is important to you personally, it is vital toyour professional development. Without thisknowledge you risk choosing the wrong challenges or
even the wrong career. You are also likely to keepcoming up against the same obstacles to success.
Identifying and working with your Enneagram type canhelp you play to your strengths by choosing
professional challenges that are most appealing andappropriate for your talents. Knowing your blind spothelps you work around the obstacles it creates for you.

Personal relationships
Well these dont come with an instruction manual, dothey? For most of us, personal relationships are mostrewarding or the most frustrating part of life - or both.In some ways we can be so close to another, yet in
others feel so apart. How many times have we all felt, when an argument starts or a misunderstanding arises,Thats not what I meant at all!?
Understanding your own and others Enneagram types
allows you to relate to others with greater empathyand compassion, leading to less conflict and clearercommunication.

Working relationships
Its hard to think of a job in which dealing with peopleis not a vital skill. For anyone in one of the peopleprofessions - such as managing, teaching, counseling, coaching, consulting, sales, medicine or politics - it is
central to the success or failure of your work. The Enneagram offers you a powerful framework for
relating to others more authentically andconstructively. Whether influencing, managing, selling, caring, team-building, presenting or advising, it can
help you communicate effectively and respectfully, extending your influence and opening up new optionsfor collaboration.

Spirituality
Ive left this one last as its perfectly possible to use the Enneagramas a practical tool for selfknowledge and relating to others withoutany spiritual element.
On the other hand, those with an interest in spiritual developmentwill want to know that the Enneagram has been used as a
framework for meditation and growth in several different spiritualtraditions. For the Sufis, the mystics of Islam, the Enneagram is theface of God. Christian teachers have traced the seven deadly sins -and their antidotes - in the Enneagram types. And Buddhistteachers use the Enneagram as a map of attachments that canguide meditators on the way to awakening. More modern spiritual
schools that use the Enneagram include the Fourth Way teachingsof G.I. Gurdjieff and the Arica training of Oscar Ichazo.

THE HEART TYPE
-

21/60
Type Two: The Helper
Type Two is skilled at reading others emotions inorder to understand and meet their needs. Twostake their identity from their ability to help
others. Generous to a fault, they can be relied upto step forward and take care of others whenneeded. Their giving can take many forms - time, attention, energy, experience, influence or
money. Problems can arise when they start togive in order to receive something in return -whether material or emotional.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
22/60
Type Two: The Helper
The stereotype of the Two is the kindly oldgrandmother or self-sacrificing carer, but Twos can alsotake on the role of the power behind the throne of aninfluential person.
At their best Twos understand the joy of service. Theyare happy to give without seeking a rewardin return, since making a difference to anothers life is whatbrings them pleasure. They find fulfilment in the act ofgiving, without clinging to the image of the generous
person. There is nothing neurotic in their generosity, since they are wise enough to balance what they giveto others with taking care of their own needs.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
23/60
At their worst Giving becomes a form of manipulation,of making others feel indebted to them and returningthe favour. Unable to acknowledge their own needsdirectly, they use emotional pressure to meet themindirectly, often without realising what they are doing. It is not enough for them to help someone else - theycrave praise for their generosity and want to be
recognised as a special indispensable person. If theydo not get this, they can criticise other and complain oftheir ingratitude. The dark side of the Helper is theself-appointed Martyr.
We all experience point Two any time we help
someone else and experience the pleasure of seeingtheir face light up with happiness - and maybe a twingeof anticipation to see whether they have noticed ourgenerosity?
-

Type Three - The Performer
Type Three is skilled at reading others emotionsin order to influence them. Threes take theiridentity from their ability to win praise andrecognition from large numbers of people, or of
the most influential people. Because they alwayshave one eye on the public perception of theiractions, they become consummate performers atwhatever they choose to focus on. Problems can
arise when they become so attached to theirpublic persona that they lose touch with theirown real feelings and start to deceive boththemselves and others.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
25/60
The stereotype of the Three is the actor, showbizperformer or politician, but they can be found in
almost any walk of life - such as the highest-profilemanager, doctor, writer, salesperson or fitnessinstructor.
At their best Threes are the embodiment of
excellence. They deliver a wonderful performance inevery sense, and their impressive style is backed up bysubstantial achievement. They experience joy in theperformance itself, without undue concern for theirpublic image. They are able to distinguish betweenreality and illusion, and to balance public adulationwith awareness of their own feelings and honestacceptance of their shortcomings.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
26/60
At their worst Threes are addicted to the limelightand will stop at nothing to bolster their selfimage. Cut
off from their true feelings, they cling to the externaltrappings of success and are ruthless with anyone whothreatens their position, sometimes resorting tounderhand methods to discredit them. To others they
look deceptive - all spin and no substance - but theyhave been believing their own press for so long thatthey hardly notice the deception. The dark side of theconsummate Performer is the plausible Liar.
We all experience point Three any time we perform atask particularly well and receive praise andrecognition - and maybe the temptation to play to thecrowd and bask in the limelight?
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
27/60
Type Four - The Romantic
Type Fours are highly sensitive to their own emotions, able to introspect deeply and to express these feelingsin original ways. Fours take their identity from theirsense of being true to themselves and following their
own path in life, whatever the prevailing wisdom orfashion. Because of their ability to tap deep wells ofemotion, they can create powerful works of art or takeunusual and memorable paths through life. Problemsarise when their introspection tips over into
selfabsorption and they start to lose touch with therealities of life around them, including the feelings ofothers.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
28/60
The stereotype of the Four is the Romantic artist orpoet, but their originality is not always expressedthrough artistic channels - they can be the black sheep
or dark horse with a distinctive approach to anyprofession or life situation.
At their best Fours can inspire others with theiroriginality and bring a magical, almost otherworldly
quality to whatever they do. Whether artists or not, intheir work they create something striking andmeaningful that resonates deeply with those whom ittouches. Instead of being attached to their own
feelings, they take pleasure in expressing them andtouching others hearts. They are able to balance self-awareness with a healthy respect for others feelingsand the reality of the world around them.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
29/60
At their worst they become so absorbed in their innerworld that they lose touch with reality and becomeself-obsessed. Melancholy - never far away - turns into
depression and they wallow in negative feelings. Theybecome bitter against a world that doesntunderstand them and angrily reject suggestions thatthey need to take their head out of the clouds and dealwith the realities of life. Others see them as self-indulgent and start to lose patience with theirnegativity. The dark side of the Romantic is theneurotic Depressive.
We all experience point Four when we feel something
so strongly that we have a vivid sense of the beautyand preciousness of life, so that no force on earth willpersuade us to go against our true feelings - and maybethe temptation to milk the feeling for all its worth?

The Head Types
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
31/60
Type Five - The Observer
Type Five has a gift for focused concentration and deepthought, able to analyse a problem, topic or situationand reach carefully reasoned conclusions. Fives taketheir identity from their status as guardians of
knowledge and founts of wisdom. Because of theirpatient ability to explore a subject in depth, theybecome authorities on whatever they set their mindto. Problems arise when thinking becomes a substitute
for action, and when they get so used to living in theirheads that they lose touch with their own feelings andbecome insensitive to others.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
32/60
The stereotype of the Five is the ivory towerintellectual, but they are not necessarily academics -they are the deep thinkers and reserved characters to
be found in any walk of life, the ones most likely to takea step back from a situation and give it consideredthought.
At their best Fives are wise teachers, generous withtheir learning and eager to help others. They are ableto set aside their own prejudices and examine the dataimpartially, often reaching an original conclusions thatit is hard to contest. They know the joy of learning forits own sake, regardless of trappings such asqualifications or high status positions. They are able tobalance deep thought with a healthy awareness oftheir own feelings and deeply felt connections to thosearound them.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
33/60
At their worst Fives are cold and distant, cuttingthemselves off from others and withdrawing into a worldof abstract thought. The respected authority becomes a
boring know-all, highly sensitive to any perceived slight ontheir status as the fount of all wisdom. The thirst forknowledge turns into an obsessive collection of data, without regard for its utility or relevance. Lost in a world ofabstract thought, they lose touch with their real feelingsand can compensate through compulsive or addictivebehaviour. The dark side of The Observer is the paranoidPedant.
We all experience point Five when we become soabsorbed in learning about a topic that we experience adeep pleasure in marshaling all the facts and seeingmeaningful patterns emerge - and maybe feel slightlysuperior to those who havent looked into it so deeply?
-

34/60
Type Six - The Guardian
Type Six is a hard-headed thinker who appliespractical intelligence to securing the wellbeing ofa group - such as a family, circle of friends, team, company or country. Sixes take their identity from
their position as loyal members of the group.Because of their ability to spot danger and putthe group interest first they are dependable teamplayers. Problems arise when their identification
with the group leads to an us and themmentality and they become suspicious ofoutsiders.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
35/60
The stereotype of the Six is the policeman or securityguard, prepared to put their life on the line for thestatus quo, but they can be found as loyal members of
any kind of team - such as those in business, sport, themilitary, politics or the family.
At their best Sixes are loyal, trustworthy guardianswhose sixth sense for danger is placed at the service
of their community. They are able to keep a clear headeven when alert for danger, and see potential threatsin perspective, responding appropriately. They arehappy to work tirelessly in the background, without the
need for special recognition. They are wise enoughbalance their identification with their group with ahealthy respect for others and their differences, andextend a warm welcome to strangers.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
36/60
At their worst they are suspicious and volatile, quickto accuse and slow to trust or forgive. Their alertnessspills over into paranoia. Both Fives and Sixes
experience paranoia, with the difference that Fives aretypically paranoid about themselves as individuals,Sixes on behalf of the group. Tormented by anxiety, they see everyone as a potential threat - insiders are
potential traitors, outsiders are viewed with prejudiceand can even be persecuted. The dark side of theGuardian is the paranoid Bigot.
We all experience point Six any time we feel part of a
team and experience the sense of everyone pullingtogether to achieve a common goal - and maybe startto see outsiders as the opposition?
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
37/60
Type Seven - The Optimist
Type Seven has a gift for looking on the brightside of life and thinking up exciting new options.Sevens see themselves as the life and soul of theparty. Whether at work or play, they take it upon
themselves to lighten the mood and help othersto see the glass as half-full (and just waiting for atop-up). Because they are so good at infectingothers with their enthusiasm they are charming
company and usually surrounded by a group offriends. Problems arise when their optimismleads them to gloss over difficulties and makesthem afraid of facing up to the darker side of life.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
38/60
The stereotype of the Seven is the bon viveur andparty animal, and theres no denying most Sevenshave a taste for the finer things in life - but theiroptimism can also be applied to serious technical, business or life problems, where they can be reliedupon to bring a solution-focused mindset and plenty ofpractical creativity.
At their best Sevens are delightful people, the first
names on the list when invitations are going out andthe last to leave at the end of the evening. They areconcerned with others pleasure as their own, and willgo to considerable lengths to ensure that everyone haswhat they need for a good time - all the while insisting
that its my pleasure. They are also wise enough toacknowledge problems when they arise, and to applytheir intelligence and creativity to finding workablesolutions.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
39/60
At their worst Sevens cling to pleasure, sometimes tothe point of addiction, as a way of avoiding difficultiesand shirking their responsibility. Delight in the good
things in life becomes a sense of entitlement, and theyreact angrily when others refuse to play the game andindulge their whims. Formerly charming, they can bebitterly critical and hurtful of their so-called friends. The dark side of the Optimist is the selfish Hedonist.
We all experience point Seven when we are filledwith an irrepressible sense of the joys of life and itspossibilities, and an eagerness to share these withothers - and maybe when we know its time to face upto our responsibilities, but want to keep playing just alittle longer?

The Body Types
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
41/60
Type Eight - The Leader
Type Eight is a powerful presence, full of physicalvigour, who is not afraid to take the lead and actdecisively. Eights see themselves as leaders andpillars of strength, with a duty to guide and
protect weaker individuals. Because of theirconfidence in themselves and their judgment, they have no hesitation in placing themselves inthe firing line for the good of the group.
Problems arise when power becomes an endinstead of a means, and they focus more onmaintaining the status of leadership than ondischarging its responsibilities.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
42/60
The stereotype of the Eight is the military general orpolitical leader, but they can be found in any situationwhere leadership and decisive action is called for, such
as at work, in the home or on the sports field.
At their best Eights are noble, almost heroic figures, offering leadership when it is most needed andputting themselves on the line in the service of justice.
Their strength is used to protect and serve others, andthey have a reputation for fairness and mercy. Becausethey are focused on others more than themselves, their instinctive judgments rarely lead to errors. They
are able to distinguish between right and wrongapplications of power, and to balance public statuswith personal humility.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
43/60
At their worst Eights become intoxicated with powerand more concerned with fighting off challengers thanon serving the group. They wield their strength
indiscriminately and can take sadistic pleasure inmaking weaker individuals squirm. Their instinctivejudgment is clouded by selfinterest, so that they arelikely to pick the wrong targets and lash out without
provocation. The dark side of the Leader is theintimidating Bully.
We all experience point Eight any time we assume aposition of leadership and find ourselves taking
decisive action (sometimes to our own surprise) - andmaybe feel a twinge of pleasure when we see othersdefer to us?
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
44/60
Type Nine - The Peacemaker
Type Nines instinctive intelligence enables him orher to tune into the dynamics of a group andintervene to promote harmony and balance.Nines come across as nice people, willing to
adapt to others and accommodate their needs.Because of their ability to blend with a group, they can sometimes seem to merge into thebackground and do not always receive due credit
for their influence. Problems arise when theirhabitual focus on the group leads them to neglecttheir own needs and to hesitate when decisiveaction is called for.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
45/60
The stereotype of the Nine is the mediator or theelderly grandmother who is only concerned thateveryone will get on and be nice to each other, but
Nines are found in any situation where balance andharmony are required. In spite of their retiringtemperament, this can make them excellent leaders.
At their best Nines are aware of their influence andare not afraid to intervene to promote harmony -
even if that means a few sharp words are in order. Theyunderstand that many things are important in life, butnone so much as being at peace with yourself and withothers. This is the message they convey to others, sometimes explicitly, but more often implicitly, in theway they conduct themselves and their relationships. And they are wise enough to balance the interests ofthe group with speaking up for their own needs.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
46/60
At their worst Nines are anxious to keep the peace atany cost, and will play the part of the nice personeven while seething with a sense of injustice. They
mistake a calm exterior and cordiality for real peaceand accord. This means they fail to speak up or takeaction when it is called for, so that problems fester andimportant issues are neglected. They are easily
distracted and can fritter away days or weeks by zoningout in their uncomfortable comfort zone. The darkside of the Peacemaker is the anxious Placater.
We all experience point Nine any time we recognise
the futility of a conflict and intervene to restore peaceand mutual understanding - and maybe when we knowan issue needs to be raised, but are afraid to rock theboat?
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
47/60
Type One - The Achiever
Type Ones physical drive is channelled into a sense ofmission, of something important that needs to beachieved and which may require sacrifices. Onesidentify with their sense of purpose and feel the need
to measure themselves and others against a set of highstandards. They have a deep-seated sense of justiceand fairness, and will not hesitate to speak up if theyfeel these values are being flouted. Problems arise
when they become more concerned with rules andstandards than with relating to fallible human beings -themselves included.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
48/60
The stereotype of the One is the exactingteacher or dogmatic cleric, but Ones are foundin any situation where high standards are
required - whether as performers or examiners. At their best Ones are exemplars of purpose and
efficiency, working tirelessly to achieve aworthwhile goal. They are idealists in pursuit of
perfection - if they dont reach it, it wont be forwant of trying! Because they aim high, they oftenachieve more than was thought possibleandthey are realistic enough to accept that they willnever get everything 100% right. They are wiseenough to recognise that rules are means and notends, and to accept the flaws in themselves andin others.
-
8/13/2019 Enneagream
49/60
At their worst Ones become obsessed with the rightway to do things and refuse to give themselves oranyone else any peace until conformity is achieved.
High standards give birth to a harsh inner critic withwhich they constantly berate themselves for theirfailings, so that they constantly feel guilty and irritable. Not content with making their own lives a misery, theyinsist that others conform to their rules, with dogmatic
pronouncements and even violent punishment. Thedark side of the Achiever is the merciless Critic.
We all experience point One whenever we pushourselves to raise our performance and achievesomething we believe is worthwhile - and maybe startto think the world would be a better place if only otherpeople made a similar effort?

HAMONIC GROUPS
Harmonic groups tell us how we cope with
conflict and difficulty: how we respond when
we do not get what we want.
The harmonic Groups are useful for
transformational work because they indicate
how each person copes when they do get
what they want. Thus they reveal thefundamental way that our personality defends
against loss and disapppointment.

be a good boy or girl
and are irritated with
people who disregard the
rules

like being outside of it
bending rules and finding
shortcuts
5 Being the expert and having deepinformation. They focus on the process,
objective facts, and maintaining clarity and

By splitting off andabstracting feelings, they
stay preoccupied and
cerebral, as if their
feelings were happening
to someone else.
Fives reject the systemand want to work on
their own, outside of it.
They have little patience
with rules or procedures

Main themes of the Reactive group
Seeks: Fears: Deals with others by:
4 A rescuer, someone to understandthem and support their life and
dreams. They want to be seen.
Abandonmentthatno one will care for
them; that they will
not have enough
support to find and
become themselves
Keeping othersinterested by limiting

on to supporters.
6 Both independence and support. Theywant someone to rely on, but they also
need to be the strong one
