Spotlight On Bob Casey by Mellissa Hurwitz

Bob Casey once again brings his directorial talents to Oyster Mill Playhouse (OMP), taking the helm for OMP’s production of the musical Bye Bye Birdie, which opens on November 4, 2016. Bob is quite familiar with the show, having directed it in 1975 and having twice appeared in a production as Harry MacAfee.

Casey graduated from Bloomsburg University, where he majored in theater. He started his career teaching English at Cumberland Valley and Red Land High Schools. Bob then took a six-year leave of absence from teaching to tour with Prather Productions, Inc. of Lancaster, as both an actor and director. He then went on to teach at Trinity High School where he also directed the high school plays until his retirement.

Bob appeared in his first community theater show 45 years ago - Wait Until Dark at Little Theater of Mechanicsburg (LTM). He was also an original member of the Metropolitan Repertory Company, now known as OMP, and directed Summertree, the first show mounted by the fledgling theatre group. Over the years Bob has directed many shows at OMP, LTM, and the former Capitol Dinner Theater. Some of his favorites were, The Miracle Worker and Night Watch at OMP; Dark of the Moon, There Goes the Bride, and The Kitchen Witches at LTM; and Our Town and There’s a Girl in My Soup at Capitol Dinner Theater.

Bob is excited about the current production of Bye Bye Birdie, and believes that, even though it harkens back to the 1950s and 1960s, the musical it is not at all dated and always seems like a fresh show with each new production.

YES, VIRGINIA, RADIO USED TO BE THE PRINCIPAL SOURCE OF IN-HOME

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT

In the 1920s, 30s and 40s, before there were video games; before there were DVDs, blue ray and video cassettes; before color television; before there was even only black-and-white television, the primary source of entertainment for a typical family looking for something to do at home after dinner was to gather on the sofa, the living room chairs, or comfortably on the floor and listen to the radio. More specifically, they listened to serial dramas and comedies akin to those which followed on TV and still persist on network and cable television. But these broadcasts were, purely audial, with no visual component, depending on dialogue, music and sound effects to help the listener imagine the characters and story

Families and their neighbors would come together and listen to radio broadcasts of Sherlock Holmes, Groucho Marx, The Avenger, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, Superman and many many more. Radio broadcasts were so much a part of everyday life that they, in one case, caused widespread fear and hysteria, e.g., the night Orson Welles broadcast his War of the Worlds, a very realistic story about an impending alien invasion.

Drawing from this history pioneered by the likes of Orson Welles, Norman Corwin, and Arch Oboler, Oyster Mill Playhouse returns to the days of this “theater of the imagination” with a presentation of several of these classic radio shows.

Our talented actors, musicians and foley (sound effects) artists, under the direction of Greg Merkel, will present four vintage radio shows: 1) The Many Lives of Helen Trent, a 15-minute episode of a soap opera that ran daily; 2) Betty Crocker Presents: an episode of a regular broadcast where the listening

audience are taken through the steps of making an Apricot Coffee Cake; 3) an episode of the comedy series Fibber McGee and Molly; and 4) Lux Radio Theater Presents ‘The Bishop’s Wife.’ The 4—program production will be presented on the OMP stage as though we were back in 1937, 1945, 1949 or 1953 and the shows were actually being performed in a radio studio. The performances will be offered on December 2, 2016, at 8:00 pm; December 3, 2016, at 2:00 pm and again at 8:00 pm; and on December 4, 2016, at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $10 each. 2016 Season Ticket holders received a free ticket as a bonus when they purchased their season subscription.
