PROMISE & PROMISCUITY It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a women in possession of a script must be in want of an audience! Follow the fortunes of Miss Elspeth Slowtree as she battles literary snobbery, her mother’s nerves and Cousin Horatio, all armed with a superior wit, blushing countenance and generally being quite bright you know for a girl. Balls will be attended, crosses will be stitched and manners will be minded, all with not one ankle in sight. Charmingly accomplished Kiwi Penny Ashton (Hot Pink Bits, Busty Rhymes) has stolen Miss Austen’s best lines to bring this musical to life with an authentic twist. Featuring music reworked by Robbie Ellis and lyrics by Ashton, Promise and Promiscuity delivers Penny Ashton unchaperoned to the provinces. Promiscuous promises of Jane Austen- inspired shenanigans. There is cross stitching, a meddlesome mother, a dashing heroine who is actually quite bright - you know, for a girl - and loads of others, all played by me. A CUP OF TEA WITH PENNY ASHTONWHERE HAVE WE SEEN YOU BEFORE?I was a gynaecologist on Shortland St, a street comedienne in Power Rangers and a gossip on Good Morning. Or I could have married you, not as a Mormon but as a celebrant. Plus I performed here in Taranaki with Hot Pink in 2011 and also with the Taranaki International Arts Festival in 2009.

WHAT IS YOUR NEW PERFORMANCE ABOUT?

Promiscuous promises of Jane Austen-inspired shenanigans. There is cross stitching, a meddlesome mother, a dashing heroine who is actually quite bright - you

know, for a girl - and loads of others, all played by me. I also made my own bonnet with a hot glue gun.

THE IDEA BEHIND IT HAVING BEEN INSPIRED BY:Jane Austen. There are 33 direct quotes from Austen’s work dotted throughout the show, but a lot more ball jokes.

Compared with how I am in everyday life the person you will see on stage is:

Actually nine people. Elspeth is the closest to me - headstrong, obstinate and promiscuous - whereas Lady Drusilla Wrexham is the least, a stuck-up, lemon-lipped regency bi**h.

THE ONE THING I WORRY ABOUT THE MOST PERFORMING THIS SHOW IS:That people will think it is only for Jane Austen fans. Though it is true that the Jane-ites will delight in recognising moments, there are still enough balls jokes for everyone. Dudes too!

BUT I THINK THE SHOW IS JUST AS FUNNY AS:Bridget Jones’ Diary.

IT MAY NOT BE FOR YOU IF YOU’RE OFFENDED BY:A world of balls jokes, gratuitous use of innuendo, home-made bonnets and kick-ass ladies.

But do head along if your idea of great live comedy involves: Theatre, witty double entendres, wordplay, musicals and kick-ass ladies. Or if you are fans of - Jane Austen ... surprise!

THOUGH IF YOU SIT DOWN THE FRONT, BE WARNED:You might end up marrying Cordelia, and as I’m a celebrant it’ll be legal.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERAThe Phantom, at last, comes to Taranaki! Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.

THE TOMMY DORSEY ORCHESTRADirect from the USA, in this exclusive musical journey down memory lane, you will hear the original arrangements of Tommy Dorsey Hits. I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, Opus No.1, Bugle Call Rag, Song of India and many of the vintage Sinatra classics - This Love of Mine, I’ll Never Smile Again and Blue Skies. The Swing Sisters compliment the show performing the greatest hits of The Andrews Sisters. An added attraction will be the sensational swing dance group The Hollywood Jive Dancers.

The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra was one of the greatest of the Big Bands from the 1940’s and we are excited to be presenting this all American Orchestra in a concert spectacular!

NICK: AN ACCIDENTAL HERO‘Locked in syndrome’ - Nick Chisholm, successful architect, star rugby player, fearless mountain bike rider and all round wild guy – struck down with a devastating stroke at the age of 27. Nick’s recovery – 12 years of fierce determination, helped by the love of family, support of medical professionals, and the antics of friends. And the unthinkable – finding love on the internet!

Award winning comedic actress and creator Renee Lyons conveys this true story with incredible skill, taking on the personalities of multiple characters - hospital staff, family, friends, a Korean cleaner, Nicola, his newly found girlfriend - and Nick, the ‘accidental hero’, whose recovery has baffled the medical profession world-wide.

This performance was chosen by the Edinburgh Festival for the prestigious Assembly Theatre, receiving a 5 star review and described as a ‘hot show’ (one not to be missed) by the Scotsman newspaper.

The subject is serious, but there are moments of riotous comedy in this celebratory show.

“Transportative, uncategorizable, original, uplifting, brave.” - Stephen Austin (Theatreview)

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH TERRY MYERSBAND LEADERIn addition to playing the great hits of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, we’ll be presenting songs from the hit list of some of the other great bands of the swing era. We’ll do material from the books of Benny Goodman, Harry James, Artie Shaw, Lionel Hampton, and Woody Herman.

I love the power and precision with which all of these great bands played. It was, in my opinion, the zenith of popular music. Naturally, every generation relates to the popular music of its’ time but few forms have stood the test of time as this music has done.

I jokingly say that my job is to set the tempo and “get out of the way”. My main task, though, is to set the program in such a manner as to keep the interest of the audience at a high level. The players and singers with whom I work are such professionals that I know they will thrill the audience with their performance.

Our featured male vocalist, Bryan Anthony, has been with us for about two and a half years. He spent a few years with the Glenn Miller Orchestra before joining us. He enjoys singing the music which Frank Sinatra performed with Tommy Dorsey. He does a great job for us night in and night out. We have three wonderful singers (The Swing Sisters) who, among other things, sing some of the great hits of the Andrews Sisters. In addition to all of these people, one of our trumpet players, David Pruyn, will join Bryan and the ladies to present some of the wonderful music of the Pied Pipers who were an important part of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

We are all extremely excited about this trip. For most of us it’s our first visit to NZ and we hope not the last. I have not been to NZ before but have always wanted to visit there. Every person I’ve ever met with Kiwi experience raves about the beauty of the country and, more importantly, the warmth and friendliness of the people.

OKLAHOMASet in Midwest America in 1906, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colourful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!

The music and lyrics have proven to be some of the best in musical theatre with songs that include “Oh What a Beautiful Morning”, “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top”, People Will Say We’re in Love, “I Can’t Say No”, “Oklahoma!” and many more, making Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! a musical treat for all the family.
