Please look for these in your child’s Homework Folders. These tests in key areas of literacy and numeracy provide parents and educators with a snapshot of how students are progressing - individual- ly, as part of their school community and as a nation. Class teachers will be talking with the students about their performance according to the reports. As a school we closely monitor the information these tests provide to inform our curriculum, teaching and the types of LEAP projects and courses we provide. If you have any questions or con- cerns regarding your child’s report and performance please contact your child’s teacher. Each week on Assembly class teachers proudly announce students in their class who have earned their Personal Achievement Awards. These awards are presented to students who consistently follow our school rules and val- ues. Teachers regularly inform students of their individual progress towards achieving each of the awards. There are four levels of awards to achieve: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Students earn a reward and a certificate to acknowledge their efforts in achieving each level. This year students are receiving a coloured wrist band for each of the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards and a handball displaying our Whole Being Cog as a platinum award. Students who receive these awards should be very proud of their efforts and behaviour. Book week is fast approaching and it is a great opportunity for us to explore some new books and spend some ex- tra time reading. Our library will be running some special activities and Mrs Olarenshaw and Mrs Stacpoole will be reading some of the award winning books in the Reading area at lunch times. The gift of reading is one of the greatest skills we can assist our children in developing. As parents we can help our children by reading to them, listening to them read and enjoying books ourselves. Don’t forget to ensure your child completes their ‘home read- ing’ every day and to take the time to read to and with them. Happy Reading! On Wednesday 6 September we are holding our Parent-Teacher Interviews in the school hall. These meetings are an opportunity to catch up with your child’s teacher regarding your child’s academic and social progress, and for you to ask questions or clarify concerns you might have. Bookings are made through our school office by phoning 4925433 or emailing [email protected].

On Wednesday teachers from Yeppoon State High School will be visiting to speak with our Year 6 students and teachers in preparation for high school. Students will receive a High School enrolment package on the day and information that will assist in a smooth transition to High School. Yeppoon State High will be holding a parent information session in the near future, so watch for dates. I strongly encourage all parents to attend these sessions to ensure you receive all the information and support you require to assist your child in prepar-ing for this next stage in their education. If you have any questions or concerns regarding High School and your child please do not hesitate to call Yeppoon High on 49251333. Ellen A MESSAGE FROM OUR ACTING MASTER TEACHER: Here at Emu Park State School we are lucky to have number of our musicians playing and refining their music prowess during first and second break. In fact, over the last couple of weeks, our hearts have warmed and our ears have tickled with the toe tapping tunes from these three talented tempo technicians. If one day we see these three busking away at one of our local markets be sure to throw a dollar or two in their hat. Girls; we salute you and your mellow, musical tributes to ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘We will Rock You!’ and we

are grateful that you fill our playground with wonderful sounds of music. Kellie

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF LEAP: Activities: Lunch time provides plenty of rich experiences and time for our Emu Park young people to engage in a wide variety of activities and interactions. Our staff are committed to providing additional experiences dur-ing play breaks, often forgoing their own breaks to make extra curricula experiences happen. We thank the staff for sharing their time, skills and talents. Some of our lunch time and before school experiences include – Before school reading and phonics, KM running club, Strings and Choir, Robotics and Beebots programing, Club J – Japanese Club and Senior Art Club. The gardening group are beautifying our school grounds and our buckets are being filled with the Gratitude Express. Each Wednesday the outdoor reading area is filled with books, pillows, mats and happy little readers. There are also discussions in the pipeline about a Talent Show and our very own Emu Park Ninja activities. Stay tuned for more news about these events! NDIS – National Disability Insurance Scheme: A wonderful opportunity is available to families in our school, after negotations with Autism Queensland. With the upcoming move to NDIS - National Disability Insurance Scheme to our region soon, the importance of careful planning and understanding the NDIS is essential. To book an appointment please call Autism Qld directly on 49234800 . We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity or speak to Claire in LEAP for further details. Health screening for our Indigenous and Torres Stra it Islander students was conducted during the week. There was an overwhelming response from our families so the van remained on site for five days to offer this service. We thank one of our mums, Courtney and the Bidgerdii Community Health Service for their commit-ment to our young people. Hearing Checks at Emu Park School: Another support we are bringing to our students’ is the screening of hearing on Thursday 24th August and Thursday 31st August. This week emails were sent to Prep, Year One and Year Two families and identified students. However, this hearing service is available to all students and requires consent forms to be returned to the school by 21/08/17. This service is made possible thanks to the health professionals from the Maternal and Child Health Service School Hearing Program. This partnership between our school and the Child Health Service enables us to gain important information about your child’s ear health and hearing. As the parent/guardian of the child you will be given the results of this screening and informed of any further follow up that is required. This information will be shared with the school to ensure fur-ther support is provided in the classroom if required. Please complete one consent form per child and return to Emu Park School via the admin email or through the office. The visits are planned for Thursday 24 th August and Thursday 31 st August. Please return the hearing consent form ASAP, but by 21/08/17. If you require any support with these processes please do not hesitate to contact Claire Lawrence in LEAP or speak directly with

your child’s class teacher. Some paper copies of the referral can be found in the school office or can be sent home upon request. LEAP Projects: Our Term 3 LEAP Project Pin ceremony will be held at assembly on Friday 1st September. LEAP projects are embedded in Emu Park teaching and learning as a deep and rich extension of learning, delivered in groups. Selection to ac-cess a LEAP Project is based on a criteria of personal interest, academic achievement and engagement. LEAP Projects are or-ganised across the school year to allow for a broad range of year levels to have access to these engagement and extension expe-riences. Points are awarded for successful engagement and completion of a Project. These points accumulate and LEAP Pins are proudly presented when students’ reach a level. LEAP Pin Award Ladder: Obsidi-an 30, Sapphire 24, Emerald 18, Aquamarine 12, Citrine 6. Thanks for reading our LEAP news update. Claire A MESSAGE FROM OUR MUSIC TEACHER: Forest Lake SHS Visit Next Wednesday: Next Wednesday, Instrumental Music students from Forest Lake State High School (Brisbane) will be visiting us for the day. They are touring the Rockhampton region for their annual tour and we are lucky enough to have them come and workshop with our stu-dents during the day and perform for our students in the afternoon session. In the morning session they will work-shop with our senior Band and String students and in the middle session they will do the same with our beginner students. Our Instrumental Band and String Ensemble students will need to bring their instrument next Wednes-day so they can participate in these workshops. In the afternoon session Forest Lake State High School's String Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Band and Drum line will perform for our school. This will give all students the op-portunity to see a broad range of instruments and the potential for learning an instrument at high school. Instrumental Music and Senior Choir Photos - How to Order: This week Band, String Ensemble and Senior Choir students had their photo taken. Your child will be sent home with an additional envelope if they had their photo taken with the details of these photos so that if you would like to order this photo you are able to. Combined Schools Concert - 23rd and 24th August - W eek 7: Students who have been learning an instrument longer than 6 months will have received information this week for the Combined Schools workshop and concert via email. Please encourage your child to practise in the lead up to this event so that they will feel confident on the day. They will also be rehearsing some of these pieces with the high school visiting our school this com-ing Wednesday. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr Coonan or I. ChoralFest - Monday - Week 9 - September 4 th: The Senior Choir will be participating in Choralfest again this year. It will be held at the Rockhampton Tabernacle Baptist Church (Norman Road, Rockhampton) on September 4th. Students will receive further information and permission forms via email in Week 7. Students travel in by bus at approximately 11:45am and we rehearse for the day with choirs from Rockhampton and Yeppoon schools. Mr Mac buys us pizza for dinner. Then at 7pm parents join us for a concert where we get to showcase our efforts for the day. It is a wonderful experience with a choir of about 400 children. It is lots of fun!!!! The Sen-ior Choir has already started practising our songs and I'm sure they have started telling you all about it. A small number of students are also selected to participate in an Honours choir. These students need to attend an extra rehearsal on the weekend prior to Choralfest. It is usually held at The Hall State School. If your child is selected for this choir, you will receive an additional email with the details regarding this as well. Sarah DSR A MESSAGE FROM OUR P E TEACHER: Congratulations to all the students who travelled to North Rockhampton State High School last Monday and Tues-day to compete in the District Athletics Carnival.
