Lacy (the cat) and Doris moved into St. Elizabeth Place on January 28, 2013. Doris was born and raised in West, Texas. Upon graduation in 1951 she went to business school in Ft. Worth and in August 1952 she married Ernest Konvicka. They had 2 children; one boy who lives in Denton and one girl who lives and works in Waco. She also has one grandson, Jason, who lives in Corpus Christi and two great grandchildren who live in Whitney.

New Friends at Providence Park

Mrs. Konvicka worked for the glass plant for 2 years and then went to work for the V.A. hospital in Waco for 32 years until retirement.

Doris is a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and did a lot of volunteer work there.

She and her family went to Spain, Portugal and other ports of call. They also traveled the United States.

Mrs. Konvicka likes to cross stitch and sew in her

spare time. Welcome to St. Elizabeth Place, Doris, we’re glad you’re here.

By popular demand we will be going back to Marlin, Texas to “Sisters” for lunch on Friday the 8th of March leaving at 10:15 a.m. in order to “beat the crowd.” This is a special “down home cooking” (I recommend the pork chop) restaurant right in the heart of Marlin that always draws a big lunch crowd. So, sign up at the activity table and hop

aboard for a tasty adventure.

Also on the 22nd of March we will be trying out a new place here in Waco called the Egg & I. We will be leaving at 10:45 a.m. for this trip. If you want to try out a new place in town this is the trip for you. Let’s go and see just how good it is!

Out to Lunch in March!

Maxene Pierson moved to St. Elizabeth on February 15, 2013. She was born near Granbury, Texas but moved to New Mexico at an early age to attend school. Upon graduation she began working for the school systems in the food service department and retired from this position after many many years.

Maxene married Lemial Martin and they had 3 sons; James, Howard, and Troy. Mr. Martin was killed at an early age in a light plane crash leaving Mrs. Martin to raise her sons on her own. After the boys were grown she married Mr. Pierson.

Maxene enjoys playing straight dominoes if anyone would like to join her. Welcome to Providence Park, Maxene.

Frances Wooldridge moved to the Village from Lake Shore Estates on February 1, 2013.

She had lived there for 14 years and decided it was time for a change.

Frances was born and raised in Gatesville, Texas. She attended Baylor University from 1941 – 1945 majoring in History. She married Rembert H. Wooldridge in June 1948. He was a service man with the 8th Army Air Corps. stationed in England. After they married he went to work in her fathers’ drugstore until 1952. They then moved

to Midland where Mr. Wooldridge went to work for the Southwestern Drug Corp. He was sales manager there and later became the manager of the Waco Division. Frances volunteered for Highland Baptist Church for 10 years as a front desk clerk, a position she really enjoyed.

Mr. and Mrs. Wooldridge had 2 sons; Rusty who lives here in Waco and is an insurance teacher and John who is an attorney in Hawaii.

Frances is a “Foxx Channel Fiend”, enjoys anything to do with history and bible

The Irish Migration to America

If you’re listening to the news occasionally as I do, you get the feeling that maybe Congress is ready to tackle the immigration problem, since most of the recent political commentary is somewhat positive. The eleven million undocumented people in our society today are an indication that America continues to be a place where many come to seek a better life.

Now, if you have glanced at your March calendar, you noticed that Saint Patrick’s Day is on the seventeenth. That brings to mind the story of one of the largest migrations to this country. The Irish were among the early Europeans to cross the ocean; however, they did not come in significant numbers until several decades after the American colonies had obtained their independence. Those early arrivals were predominately male; however, in later years entire families made the journey. It is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Irish came between 1820 and 1930.

From the desk of Charles Tolbert

Reba and Rascal (the cats) moved into Providence Park on February 11, 2013 and they allowed their owners James and Mary Helen Ping to come along for the ride.

Mary was born in McGregor and graduated from South Bosque High School. She worked for a total of 53 years for James Connally Air Force Base, the V.A., and finally at Dr. Lee’s office. She met Jim while working at James Connally and they married on Friday the 13th 1964. They have 2 boys; Mark, a bachelor, from Dallas who just sold his business and Mark who graduated from Baylor and South West Seminary and is a minister of a large church in Round Rock. Mary Helen has traveled to Vienna Austria, Ireland, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Hawaii, Alaska, Panama and the Caribbean Islands. She and Mr. Ping are very active in the 1st Baptist Church of Waco.

Mr. Ping was born and raised in Indiana. He joined the military in 1952 and retired in 1975. He retired on Friday from the military and went to work for the V.A. on Tuesday where he stayed for an additional 30 years. Mr. Ping has traveled to North Africa, England, and Greenland with the military.

It is great to have the Pings join our Providence Park family.

Welcome James & Mary Helen Ping Apt. 2117

The Village & St. Elizabeth Place Birthday PartyThe Village Birthday party will be on Tuesday March 12th at 2:30 p.m. in the Village Dining Room. Music for this party will be provided by Buck and Gloria Criner.

The St. Elizabeth Place Birthday party will be on Wednesday March 20th at

2:30 p.m. in the St. Elizabeth Dining Room. Music for this event will be provided by Jay and Tammy. Both events should prove to be very entertaining and “Special” for those in attendance. DON’T MISS IT!

Even the Assistant Administrator, Amanda Sonnier, got into the act by helping with the Valentine’s Happy Hour, as “The server of fine champagne and wine.” A fun time was had by all who attended. There were chocolate covered strawberries and cucumber sandwiches from dining services for everyone to enjoy while Monty Saffron played beautiful love songs on the piano like the professional he is. Once again, it was a Happy Hour to remember.

Our “Special Happy Hour” this month will be on Friday, March 15th, beginning at 2:15 p.m. in the Village Dining Room. It just happens to fall on the same Friday that Monty would be returning to play for us and he knows some Irish tunes, so you know the music will be great. This time everyone is invited to wear their green and we know that Dona and Sharon will be coming up with some great “Green” ideas. So, come on down and enjoy the fun.

St. Patrick’s Day “Special” Happy Hour coming this month

Ireland’s 1845 Potato Blight decimated potato crops, creating a devastating famine. Starvation plagued the nation and within five years, a million Irish were dead while half a million had arrived in America to start a new life. It should be noted that long standing political and religious conflict with the British were also factors promoting emigration. In time, the sum total of Irish-Americans exceeded the entire population of Ireland.

Irish immigrants left a rural lifestyle in a nation lacking modern industry, and most found themselves unprepared for the industrialized, urban centers in the United States. They often had no money beyond the fare of passage. Consequently, they were forced to settle in the ports of debarkation in the most deplorable living conditions.

These immigrants often entered the workforce at the bottom of the occupational ladder and took on menial and dangerous jobs that were often avoided by other workers. Many women became

Page 12: Providence Park Newsletter

domestic workers, while the men labored in coal mines, built railroads, and dug canals. Employment was difficult as they experienced gross discrimination and often found themselves in conflict with established union workers. Fast forward to today: Irish-Americans are fully acculturated and participants at all levels of our society.

On Wednesday, the seventeenth, millions of Americans and Christians throughout the world will join the Irish in celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day, the anniversary of the saint’s death in the fifth century. While there will be parades in communities, large and small, the most spectacular event will occur in New York City, where over 100,000 celebrants participate. They will be wearing green, the color long associated with the shamrock, the symbol of Irish nationalism.

Valentine’s Party a Smash! All 69 Village and St. Elizabeth residents who attended the Valentines Party in the Community Room on the 14th of February seemed to be having a wonderful time. Darren Lambert provided the music for the event, playing a variety of old love songs, rock and roll, and country music. Dona and her dining services staff did an exceptional job of providing the refreshments with “special” cherry vanilla ice cream cups which were a big hit. The party would not have been the success that it was, had it not been for the help of Cindy Metcalf (volunteer) Cheryl Lane, and Casey Nystrom (beauticians). Thanks everyone for all your help in providing another great Providence Park party.

An Extra Happy Happy Hour!
