I listened to a number of high calibre speakers regarding current education and what the future of learning may look like. It was reassuring for us that our school’s policies and expectations that support stu- dent learning are well and truly on track according to the research that is available. In particular, our teachers en- sure students know what it is they are learning by having it visible in the classroom. In our school we call this the WALT (We Are Learning To). Ask your child about our “Learning Zones” and the WALT. A reminder to those students who ride or skate to and from school. I have received a concern from the local bus company that some students on the way home from school are racing the buses, putting themselves in danger. If you are a parent of a student that does ride or skate it would be beneficial to have a conversation around this po- tential risk. A reminder that we are a uniform school. Students are required to wear black shorts or skirts or skorts to school. Wayne A MESSAGE FROM OUR P.E. TEACHER: Our senior swimming carnival is quickly approaching (Wednesday 22 nd March) and during the week I sent home tuckshop order forms. If your child (Yr. 3 – 6) is ordering tuckshop that day, please complete the slip and place into the class’ tuckshop box by next Friday. Normal tuckshop will still apply for the Preps – Yr. 2. Hayley and Teearna were recently invited to participate at the Rockhampton District Netball trials. Both girls were unsuccessful in selection but performed well and gained valuable experience. Ella has also been off participating in the Teams Surf Life Saving Carnival. Her team (North) defeated South at Agnes Waters, with Ella staying on to participate in the individual events. Ella again came home with more medals, this time finishing 3 rd in the iron and swim events as well as finishing 2 nd in the board event. Congratulations Ella. Luke

Mr Luke Coonan heralds from Cairns but started his teaching career in Brisbane as a classroom teacher after studying at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and QUT. He has since moved to Yeppoon with his wife and spent the previous few years teaching at Glenmore State High School until given the chance to dive back into his passion for teaching instrumental music. Mr Coonan is very glad to be teaching students from Grade 4 and up on brass, woodwind and percussion instruments as well as taking band re-hearsals on a Friday morning in the music room. He’s been very impressed with the warm welcome he’s received and the enthusiasm shown by staff, parents and students regarding the amazing instrumental music program here at Emu Park State School. If he’s not playing or teaching music, you’ll often find Mr Coonan playing board games, reading books or traveling. Welcome Mr Coonan!

GENERAL NOTICES: • A quick note from the local Police: It has been bought to Police attention that children are being left unat-

tended in vehicles. This raises a number of safety concerns and also commits offences within QLD legisla-tion. Leaving children under the age of 12 years of age in a vehicle without providing reasonable supervi-sion and care during that time commits an offence. If the vehicle is left running, there are a number of safety concerns that not only put the children left in the vehicle but also the general public within the school ar-ea. Please do not leave your children unsupervised in a vehicle.

• Paperwork: Shortly your child will receive a copy of our “Student Details Summary”. This form shows the address and contact details we have recorded on our system. Once you have this form please check over the details and make any corrections directly onto the sheet and return it to your child’s teacher. Please en-sure the accuracy of your email address and mobile number as these are used as our primary communica-tion. Some students will bring home a sheet showing unexplained absences according to our sys-tem. Please state the reason for their absence and return to your child’s teacher. The absence details will then be updated. We appreciate your effort in keeping your details current.

• Life Education Visit: Liz, Healthy Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education Mobile Learning Centre will be at Emu Park State School from Monday 20th to Thursday 30th March. This visit is sponsored by The Smith Family, Communities for Children. We’ll be learning about healthy lifestyle choices and having lots of fun along the way. Head to the Parent and Carer Hub to have a look at the modules that your kids will be working through. You will find detailed overviews of the modules and fact sheets with 'conversation starter' ideas so that you can carry on discussing the lessons at home. Education is one of the strongest preventa-tive measures to take when it comes to our children’s health and safety. Come along to our Parent and Carers Session Monday 20 th March at 2:00pm. You will get to meet the educator and find out more about what your kids learn, how to engage with them in topics they will cover with Healthy Harold the Giraffe and have the opportunity to ask lots of questions.
