An integrated and applied curriculumThe Vanderbilt Executive MBA curriculum begins with a deep core of integrated course work—a strong foundation of statistics, plus organization management, finance, accounting, economics, operations and marketing that each accounts for 10 percent of the curriculum. Starting in August of Year One and ending in July of Year Two, the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program is cleanly segmented into fall, spring and summer semesters with allowances for semester breaks and holidays. In addition to two Saturdays per month, two one-week residencies are incorporated into the program—a Week-in-Residence at the beginning of Year One and an International Residency in the spring of Year Two.

Staci Springer is an up-and-coming engineer at a multinational industrial lubricant company. When the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program required attendance on both Fridays and Saturdays, she was reluctant to apply; she didn’t want to ask for Fridays off in the midst of a tough economy.

That all changed in 2009 when the program’s format shifted. “As soon as I saw the Saturday-only schedule, I hit the ‘submit’ button on my application,” says Springer, who will graduate from Vanderbilt in 2011.

Strategy. Global Perspective. But first, an immediate and intensive immersion. Week-in-Residence at New HarmonyVanderbilt students begin their Executive MBA experience with a rigorous one-week residency in New Harmony, Indiana. Intentionally remote from the everyday demands of personal and professional life, this historic community provides the perfect backdrop for full immersion in the program from the outset.

The Week-in-Residence eases the transition to the alternating Saturday class format of the program and provides students with time to get to know one another and the Executive MBA faculty. It also allows time to become acquainted with the objectives and mechanics of the program, to regain and refresh valuable perspectives on being a student, and to begin the C-Team routines such as setting expectations for performance, strategies for studying and when and how often members will meet and communicate with one another. Additionally, key classes— Executive Leadership, Managerial Accounting, Statistics and Managerial Economics—are launched.

Business Strategy Sequence A hallmark of the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program is the year-long Business Strategy Sequence that takes place throughout the second year of study. The sequence is comprised of two in-class experiences—one in the fall, one in the spring—and a C-Team consulting project with a client company that runs throughout the year and is completed during the summer, just prior to graduation.

Like other Executive MBA courses, the classroom component of the Business Strategy Sequence emphasizes learning by instruction—lecture, reading, case analysis and facilitated discussion. In contrast, the Strategy Project is defined as learning by construction—a total immersion experience in which students are challenged to call upon all of the tools and concepts learned to date and build an integrated strategic plan for a real client company.

International Residency During the spring of the second year, each Executive MBA class participates in a group immersion experience outside the United States. This week-long International Residency is an integral and final part of the three-part Global Enterprise sequence and ensures that classroom discussions and theory are brought to life in an effective and compelling manner.

Typically, the International Residency consists of visits to ten corporations in one or two host countries; these may be satellite offices of companies that are headquartered in the U.S., or local, regional or international companies that are based in these countries. Regardless of city or country, the purpose of these extended, in-depth corporate visits is to understand and discuss the differences and complexities inherent in doing business in the global marketplace, including such things as

staffing; financial, legal and political structures; economics and social customs.

Patrick Quirk Vanderbilt Executive MBA 2009President and COO, Integr8 Networks, LLCHuntstville, AL

Technologist. Transformer. World Shaper.With more than 20 years in telecommunications, networking and semiconductors, Patrick Quirk’s experience ranged from early-stage startups to Fortune 100 companies—most recently in Ireland as general manager of European engineering operations for LSI.

But as an engineer by background, Patrick saw gaps in his knowledge of finance, accounting and strategy—gaps he needed to fill both to handle his steadily increasing responsibilities and equip himself for new ones. The Vanderbilt Executive MBA program, which he chose for its reputation in all three areas, required a challenging balance between work, school and family. One solution involved joint study time with his sons as they all did their homework together.

Bill Christie, Frances Hampton Currey Professor of Finance; Faculty Director, Executive MBA; Professor of Law

Bill Christie’s studies of the major financial markets in the mid-1990s concluded that NASDAQ market makers were implicitly

colluding to maintain artificially high trading profits at the expense of investors. His research resulted in sweeping reform of the NASDAQ market, introduction of the SEC Order Handling Rules, and a $1.027 billion settlement against the defendants. Bill won first prize for outstanding papers published in the Journal of Finance based on this research. He is a five-time recipient of the EMBA Teaching award and was ranked either first or second among star faculty in each BusinessWeek ranking from 1992 through 2000.

Dick Daft, Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Professor of Management

Dick Daft is a noted expert in change management, organization behavior, organization design and leadership and serves as the “Group Doctor” for the Executive MBA program. He has published

12 books, including the newly released The Executive and the Elephant— and dozens of articles on these subjects. He also developed and managed the Center for Change Leadership. Dick’s books on organization management and leadership are the most widely used in their categories at business schools around the world.

Ray Friedman, Brownlee O. Currey Professor of Management

Ray Friedman is an expert in human organizational behavior focused on understanding how cultural differences and backgrounds influence both negotiation

and conflict resolution. He is also a leading expert in Chinese management, focusing on conflict styles, negotiation arbitration and biculturalism in management.

Luke Froeb, William C. Oehmig Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise

Luke Froeb joined the Owen faculty in 1993 as an expert in the economics of competition policy. From 2003 to 2005, he was appointed

Director of the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission, where government antitrust agencies widely used his merger models to predict anti-competitive behavior.

Nancy Lea Hyer, Associate Professor of Operations Management

Nancy Lea Hyer’s work in the academic and business communities has focused on cellular manufacturing, process redesign and project management, including a successful career

at Hewlett-Packard. She is also the co-author of Reorganizing the Factory: Competing through Cellular Manufacturing, which captured the 2003 Shingo Prize for Research in Manufacturing.

Dawn Iacobucci, E. Bronson Ingram Professor in Marketing

Dawn Iacobucci, who joined the Owen faculty in 2007 after spending the previous three years at Wharton, is a renowned expert on networks, customer satisfaction, service

marketing and quantitative psychological research. Iacobucci’s recent textbook, MM (Marketing Management), is quickly gaining critical acclaim.

Craig Lewis, Madison S. Wigginton Professor of Finance

Craig Lewis, the Finance-area coordinator, joined the Owen faculty in 1986 and has been widely published since that time on such financial issues as volatility, debt and capital

structure. His interests include equity analyst behavior, the security issue process and corporate financial policy.

Brian McCann, Associate Professor of Strategic Management

Brian McCann is an expert in strategic management and entrepreneurship. He joined the Owen faculty in 2009 after completing his PhD in strategic management

Bruce Cooil The Dean Samuel B. and Evelyn R. Richmond Professor of Management

Bruce Cooil has wide-ranging business and academic experience as a statistical modeler. He has worked with health care firms, including HCA, Solucient, TeamHealth, Tennessee

Oncology, and LIFETEST to create models for the delivery of more effective health care services

and to develop forecasts of mortality and morbidity rates. In the area of marketing

research, he has worked with Ipsos Loyalty and AT&T. Bruce has also written

and consulted on medical malpractice and automobile insurance claims and

indemnities, and has developed predictive insurance models for AARP and the Robert

Wood Johnson Foundation.

Annual tuition and feesTuition for the academic year 2010-2011 is $42,850,

payable in October (40 percent), February (40 percent) and June (20 percent). Additional fees

expenses; and academic services.

Tuition for Year Two typically increases 4 to 7 percent

Designed with feedback and funding from Executive MBA students and alumni, this space combines the unique historical character of a circa 1888 brick building with classrooms boasting contemporary, flexible seating and state-of-the-art technology. The Executive Lounge bundles together a business center, study area and catering kitchen, providing a home away from home for executive students.

World-class management library The Walker Management Library offers resources and personal service that are unmatched at most top-tier business schools. Each C-Team is assigned a research librarian who will guide members to the right databases and assets for any given assignment; these services can be accessed on campus or over the Internet from remote locations. In addition to space in the Executive Lounge, the library offers 21 study rooms for team meetings, equipped with wireless Internet access and ample work tables and seating.

Online course work and collaboration toolsExecutive MBA students use “BlackBoard,” a best-of-class learning system used by Vanderbilt and other prestigious universities. While this will be a primary tool for online assignments and faculty communication, there are many other tools such as Skype and Panopto available to faculty and teams to collaborate and present important information. All are vetted and supported by Owen’s IT Services department.
