OUR HISTORYIn 1902, back when Minnesota was part of the “great Northwest,” Dr. William Bell Riley, a pastor and scholar, started Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School in Minneapolis. In 1948, Billy Graham—known today as the world-famous evangelist—became Northwestern’s second president and helped launch our radio station, KTIS. Today, Northwestern College continues to equip students to grow intellectually and spiritually and to become God-honoring leaders in every area of the world.

Bernice…on being a business major Played for national soccer team in the East African Cup

“I love math. I actually dream about math and solve problems in my head and get really excited. I chose to major in finance because it combined math plus business. I absolutely love the business department. The professors want to know me as an individual and they help push me to my full potential. They give me the tools to do well in school, and also the tools to be a stronger Christian in my career.”

Experts who care about youDon’t be intimidated by the degrees on their office walls—professors are just people. OK, really smart ones. And at one time they started out where you are. At NWC, you might take classes from:

One of the world’s leading experts on the Dead Sea Scrolls, Dr. Michael Wise

Fulbright Scholars: Dr. Lisanne Winslow taught marine biology in Japan; Dr. Sally Harris taught linguistics in Tanzania

A Staley Distinguished Scholar: Dr. Walter Schultz, recognized for Christian responses to market economics and poverty

Performers with the Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Opera and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra

Media professionals with decades of experience in newspapers, TV, radio and film

Award-winning artists and designers

No two professors are alike, but they each bring a wealth of expertise and a love for teaching to the classroom. Plus, they carry their faith and their relationship with the Lord into the learning experience.

Learning outside the boxOur professors strive to make learning interactive, practical and fun — both in and out of the classroom. It’s common to have movie nights or Christmas parties at professors’ homes, or to serve together packing meals for children overseas.

Professors’ office doors are open if you need help with an assignment or if you just need some advice on life. And if you’re up for the challenge, they’ll mentor and encourage you, critique your work and help you develop your abilities and ideas—all providing powerful preparation for the workplace or graduate school.

George…on starting a ministry to the homeless“My sophomore year I was a resident assistant, which was a great experience being able to pour into the lives of the men that lived in my hall. There were some guys on the hall who had a big passion for homeless ministry. So we started our own ministry making sandwiches and going downtown. We were able to hand out sandwiches and pray for people. It was great to see who God would provide for us to minister to.”

Hear more of George's story at nwc.edu/students

Plug into your passionYou’ll probably never hear NWC students say, “There’s nothing to do.” With events and activities every day and night, you’re more likely to hear, “Aaahh, there’s so much going on!”

You’ll find many ways to get involved, with intramural sports, dozens of student clubs, concerts, coffeehouse and open mic nights, ministry opportunities, multicultural festivals, prayer groups, worship nights and more. Plus, we have our own private island on the lake, where you can play broomball or swim…just not in the same season. And that’s just ON campus!

Take the leadNorthwestern’s mission is to send out God-honoring leaders who will influence the world for Jesus Christ. The Leadership Center will help you develop your abilities and gain practical experience. There are many ways you can use your leadership gifts while serving the student body, including:

Student Government Student Activities Council Student Newspaper, Radio or TV Resident Assistant (RA)

Fuel your faithChapel is a Northwestern distinctive. Every weekday morning, the community gathers to hear incredible speakers, worship God and be inspired to put faith into action. During spring break, hundreds of students go on mission trips. And every April, the college shuts down for the Day of Prayer & Service so students and faculty can serve together in the community.

Sweat and spiritThe Northwestern Eagles are known for their teamwork, intensity and exceptional sportsmanship. They’re dedicated competitors, yet demonstrate a Christlike spirit to their team and their opponents. Our coaches and athletes honor Christ in all they do. Just attend a game or practice and you’ll feel the difference.

We also like to make athletic history from time to time, like when our football team played—and won!—two games in one day in 2005!

Sam…on faith and footballTransferred to NWC after becoming a Christian

“One of the cool things about Northwestern Athletics is how close-knit our community is. We really are a family. You go through life with these guys, rather than just play games with them on Saturday. In football we have ‘One Heart, One Mission’—that’s on and off the field. We all have one heart to win a game and be competitive and play as excellent as we can, yet we also have one heart to serve Christ off the field and be leaders in the school.”

community Life on campusMost students say that some of their best college memories come from the silly and serious moments of sharing real life with friends and roommates on campus.

Whether you live in the residence halls or commute, one of the perks to our campus is being able to walk or catch a shuttle to any building. Plus, living in a hall with friends of all ages—freshmen through seniors—means always having a ride off campus or a source for inside information about a certain class or professor.

Northwestern’s residence halls are not your typical “dorms.” Here’s what to expect:

Apartment-style, carpeted suites with a full bathroom, kitchen/kitchenette and air-conditioning

Movie nights, Bible studies and prayer with your roommates and hallmates

Fun activities and trips with your Resident Assistant (RA) and brother and sister halls

Study. Sleep. Starbucks. Some might joke that these are three key ingredients for thriving at college. But whether you think an iced caramel macchiato is a blessing or a curse, you’ll enjoy making lifelong friends with people on both sides of the caffeine aisle. Join friends by the fireplace in our brand new café (serving Starbucks and ice cream!), order a snack, and dive into the history of Western civilization…taking a break, of course, to catch the latest video posted on Facebook.

Brielle…on living in Christian community “I love my roommates—we’re so different that we balance each other out. I’ve realized how important it is to live with people who can hold you accountable—to have girls who are for me. To bring things into the light and grow in community with our brother and sister halls. Seeing that authentic community my first semester here, I noticed the uniqueness and how this isn’t just any Christian school—people here are striving after Christ. There is evidence of Christ here.”
