Twinning Town ActivityAlong the Moray Firth

Coast

Twinning links in Moray commenced about 50 years ago andsince 1992 have been overseen by The Moray Twinning As-sociation, through which Moray Council gives an annual grantto support Twinning. Moray has a long history of Twinning andcurrently has five active Twinning’s, some being more activethan others. The five links are: Dufftown, twinned with Mortlachin Canada; Elgin twinned with Landshut in Bavaria;Lossiemouth twinned with Hersbruck in Germany; and Forrestwinned with Mount Dora in Florida and Vienenburg in LowerSaxony. Although each of these five operate in very differentways they all have the same purpose, and that is to fostersocial, cultural and educational links.Dufftown - Mortlach, Canada This group is very active and lastyear three separate groups from Dufftown visited Mortlach inJune, July and September. A couple from Mortlach also cameacross to Dufftown and while here visited their son who isstudying at Glasgow, perhaps as a result of twinning.

Elgin - Landshut, Bavaria This is a very active link and hasbeen for more than 50 years. Many long lasting friendshipshave been built up over the years and exchange visits aremade regularly. Last year, for example, 42 members headed toGermany for the Royal Wedding, which is re-enacted everyfour years. School visits also take place regularly in both di-rections and there is also a link between the firemen in bothtowns.Lossiemouth - Hersbruck, Germany This group unfortunatelywent through a bit of a lull and without new blood were indanger of folding, but after a lot of activity by the remainingcommittee, they have managed to attract new members, andhave appointed 5 new committee members. Last year a suc-cessful visit was hosted and appears to have a bright future.Forres - Mount Dora, Florida This group facilitates a schoolexchange every year. Two students are chosen, each year, byapplication and interview, with parents also being interviewed.Successful students spend about a month in their twin town,or Sister City as it’s known by the residents of Mount Dora.Approximately three weeks are spent attending school wherestudents from both sides find it a very interesting and worth-

while experience. There is quite an active social side to theexchange. The two students who visited last year have said,“We both found it an invaluable experience and it helped tosubstantially broaden our outlook.”Forres – Vienenburg, Germany During the 25 years of theexistence of the partnership, regular visits to and from Forresand Vienenburg, both formal and informal, have taken place. In 1985 the first group from Forres went to the twin town andwere given a rousing reception. 1994 - 10th Anniversary cele-brated in Vienenburg. 2004 - 20th Anniversary celebrated inForres. 2006 - celebration of the 700th Anniversary of the townof Vienenburg, when a carving by local craftsman JackFalconer was presented to the Mayor of Vienenburg on behalfof the people of Forres, and now has pride of place in theCouncil Chambers in Vienenburg. 2009 - the celebration of the25th Aniversary in Vienenburg.Numerous informal and private visits have been made overthe years, most recently to Forres in June 2008 in glorioussunshine. Strong lasting friendships have been made andwarm, generous hospitality is always offered to visitors on bothsides. It is fun! Twinning is good for tolerance and acceptanceof foreign cultures and good for building friendships. AllTwinning Societies live and die by the willingness of ordinarypeople to get involved. That can mean attending the regularlocal social events arranged by each society, or (for the moreadventurous) travelling abroad to meet and stay with people inthe twinning town. All of the societies in Moray are listed belowand all are constantly on the look-out for new members, soplease contact them. If you are reading this in the Nairn area, your closest twinning societies are either Forres or Inverness.

Having spent 22 years as a Padre in theRAF, one often came in for a bit ofbanter and leg pulling from colleagues. There was always the person who wasquick to remind you, “You’ve a good jobPadre. Only 1 A.P. and no amend-ments!” A not so subtle jibe that whilemost personnel had to spend timerevising and updating RAF regulationswith monotonous regularity, the Padre,on the other hand, had only his or herBible to consult and there wouldtherefore be no amendments requiredfor that!

There were also those who would ofcourse try to test the Padre’s faith with abarbed comment such as, “What do weneed religion for Padre, after all it’s justa crutch!” The easy response to thatrepartee being, “Well there’s nothingwrong with a crutch if you’ve only gotone leg!”

It was during one posting to an airbasein Yorkshire and asked to speak to achurch group in the Dales, that theconcept of a crutch assumed a verydifferent form. The directions given justsaid, “You can’t miss it. Follow the roadto Redmire village until you see the treewith crutches!” Not the banter or leg-

pull I suspected, for there it stood in thecentre of the village – a tree withcrutches! The famous Redmire oak treeis getting on a bit now and so topreserve it, the old gnarled brancheshave been given some supports. Whygo all this fuss over an old oak tree youmight ask? When John Wesley, thefounding father of the Methodist Churchwas travelling on one of his preachingtours in the late 18th century, the storygoes that he preached underneath it!So, the old Redmire oak preserves thememory of one of the greatest Christianpreachers.

Of course the tree will not last for ever, even with its ‘crutches’. So, in recenttimes acorns have been taken from thetree and planted nearby. Alongside theold oak, a new generation of flourishingsaplings will carry on a bit of history andit will quite literally be the case that,“From little acorns, mighty oak treesgrow”! In the Christian faith andfollowing the events of Easter, in onesense like the acorns, the disciples ofJesus Christ began to flourish. “He shallgrow up before him as a tender plant”Isaiah 53:2. Through the promisedaction of God’s Holy Spirit, they weregiven the strength and courage of their

convictions to go into all the world. Those who had seen and witnessed theteaching Jesus Christ became, as itwere, the acorns from the master oak.Their task was to share the faith, knowledge and love of God. So it wasthat from those few disciples theworldwide Christian faith becameknown.

Over the centuries, those handicappedby fears and doubts about life andthings to come, have been offeredcomfort and hope through that faith. Ifthat is a crutch, then at least it’spromoting health and healing, and thatcan’t be bad by anyone’s standards!

The oak of Redmire, has its descen-dants just as have the descendants ofthe Christian faith. I suppose thequestion for us all to answer in this Yearof our Lord 2010 must be this: Who areplanting the seeds of faith for the nextgeneration? Will it be you and me?“That they might be called trees of right-eousness, the planting of the Lord”Isaiah 61:3

Anne Glover reported that she had es-tablished that the car park at the rearof the Bus Station was owned byRobertsons and that she would be con-tacting them to discuss the issue oflitter within that area. Anne Gloverreported that she and Murray Ross hadmet with a representative of Stage-coach to discuss the closure of theEnquiries Desk situated at the BusStation. They were informed that thiswas closed due to financial reasons.Anne Glover advised that Stagecoachagreed to put up notices giving direc-tions to the East Road office in the BusStation.• Roads & Transportation. Murray Rosspresented the Roads and Transporta-tion Committee report.Regarding the inadequacy of busprovision, previously highlighted byHarry Torry, George Littlejohn advisedthat the C&RBoECC R&T Committeewill be suggesting that Moray Council,Transportation Dept, puts detailedprotected timetables on all four busstops in the area.

Community PlanningKieron Green, Chairman of the ElginNorth Area Forum gave a presentationon how the Community Council and

Forums could work closer together andin particular his proposals on theForums’ role in the Elgin Ear initiative.Following the presentation, George Lit-tlejohn raised concerns regarding theElgin Ear and the amount of extraworkload which it may generate for thesub-committees within the CommunityCouncil. Alex Macmillan advised that asmall Steering Group has been set-upconsisting of one member from eachForum, two members of theCommunity Council, the CommunitySupport Officer and Inspector Mowat. He stated that all reports received bythe Elgin Ear will initially go before theSteering Group for filtering and be dis-tributed to the Forums or CommunityCouncil, as appropriate, for discussionand action.

Future Funding of CommunityCouncilsThe Chairman advised that new figureshad been received. Harry Torryadvised that the new figures showedincorrect population figures. AlexMacmillan stated that he had recentlyattended a meeting to discuss theproposals and confirmed that threeoptions were available. He felt that thefirst option was not acceptable as it didnot take into account populationfigures. He also felt that the third optionwas unacceptable as it was based on aper capita of school group area and hetherefore recommended that membersopt for the second option which gave abasic grant of £500 to each Area Forumand Community Council, plus a percapita amount based upon the existingfigures. The Chairman agreed to chase

John Ferguson for correct figures and itwas agreed that Alex Macmillan woulde-mail members the accurate figureswhen available.

AOCB• Kathleen Masson advised that shehad received some complaintsregarding the grit on pavements andthat one member of the public hadbeen told by Moray Council to sweep itinto the gutter. Kathleen Massonagreed to contact the Road SweepingDepartment of Moray Councilregarding this issue. Alex Macmillan feltthat it was not a good idea to sweep gritinto gutters as this could lead toblocked drains which could in turn leadto flooding. • Kathleen Masson raised concerns asto the speed of cars in and around EastEnd and St Sylvester’s PrimarySchools. Kathleen Masson agreed towrite to the Head teachers of theseschools asking them to kindly put anote in their Newsletters urging parentsto adhere to the speed limits set in sur-rounding areas of the school.• Murray Ross agreed to attend thenext Transport Focus Group to be heldon Friday 30th March 2010.• George Littlejohn asked if the Scouthut in Lesmurdie Road was going to bedemolished. The sights, sounds and tastes of Scotland blendedtogether at the 11th annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky FestivalOne of the biggest whisky festivals in Europe will take place

in Speyside this Spring, with organisers expecting morerecord-breaking crowds from both home and abroad. The 11th Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival runs from

Thursday, 29th April to Monday, 3rd May and sees some ofthe world’s most iconic whisky distilleries lining up to take partin what has become a major international event on theScottish tourism calendar. The Festival was established in 1999 to celebrate

Scotland’s Malt Whisky Country and to help promote tourismin Moray, and especially Speyside, in the traditionally quietermonths. And 10 years later, last year’s ‘dramfest’ servedaround 250,000 nips to an estimated 24,000 visitors generat-ing an economic benefit of almost £1million. This year five days of whisky, music, food and fun feature

in a programme of more than 230 events taking place aroundSpeyside. The impressive line-

up for the Festivalincludes distilleries suchas The Glenlivet, Glen-fiddich, The Macallanand Benromach – fourof over 50 distilleries inSpeyside, and just a fewof the many distilleriestaking part in this year’sfestival.Visitors to the festival

are also treated to a rareoccurrence – the opportunity for a look behind the scenes atother well-known distilleries in the area, usually closed to thepublic, including Mortlach, Benrinnes and Tomintoul. Festival goers can choose from over 230 different events

over the five days ranging from distillery tours, landrover toursand cooperage tours to whisky masterclasses, guided whiskywalks, ceilidhs, live music, poetry sessions, locally organisedfamily friendly activities and free events. After enjoying a dram or two in a distillery, at a local hotel

or restaurant or participating venue, whisky lovers and would-be gourmets can also learn more about the role of whisky asan ingredient or accompaniment. Workshops offering tastingsessions which examine the relationship between whisky andchocolate, lamb, steak and even sausages run during theFestival – check out the Knockomie Hotel in Forres andGordon & MacPhail in Elgin for more details. A number of distilleries, hotels and restaurants around the

region will be hosting lunches and dinners which featuremenus prepared to complement the dram or include the spiritin their dishes.

And there’s no better wayto work off the excess of agood dining experience thanby joining one of the manywalks or outdoor activitiesaround Malt Whisky Countryduring the Festival. Take agentle “dramble” around theseven distilleries of Dufftown,or join in one of many guidedwalks with the SpeysideRangers or take advantageof a ‘hike’ with whisky expertDave Broom to the summit ofBen Rinnes and enjoy thepanoramic views across theCairngorms north to the Moray Firth and south to Lochnagar. There’s also the chance of spotting mountain hare andptarmigan on other guided walks and off-road trails in thewilder parts of the Cairngorm National park.Visitors can also step back in time and follow in the

footsteps of the Speyside smugglers with the launch of TheGlenlivet Smugglers’ Trails. The Glenlivet Estate has a fasci-nating history, much of which is associated with its past con-nection to illicit whisky distilling and this history, combinedwith a picturesque landscape of wide open spaces and rollinghills make it a truly memorable place to visit with the chanceto relive Glenlivet’s spirited past. The two walks during theFestival accompanied by a Crown Estate Ranger are a 6kmand 11km circular walk. Speyside is home to more than half of Scotland’s whisky

distilleries, and the Festival certainly succeeds in capitalisingon its location at the heart of Malt Whisky Country. TheFestival also goes out of its way to ensure that there’s moreon offer than just whisky at the Spirit of Speyside WhiskyFestival.Family and free events include a Pipe Band and Mounted

Cavalacde through Grantown-on-Spey, the Dufftown andDistrict Pipe Band at Dufftown Memorial Hall, an open airFamily Ceilidh at The Square in Aberlour, a ‘Ceilidh by theCastle’ at Brodie Castle with afternoon tea and home bakingin a marquee on the castle lawns, the Benromach ForresTheme Day featuring a magnificent collection of vintage andclassic vehicles as well as music, entertainment and sidestalls and kilt making demonstrations at the Station Tea Roomat Allice Littler Park in Aberlour. The sights, sounds and tastes of Scotland blended

together at the annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival issure to guarantee that Festival goers will experience the truetaste of the Speyside spirit of hospitality.Check out www.spiritofspeyside.com for further information

Summer Lemon Tart

As we are coming in to the summer months a sweetlike lemon tart is light and refreshing and any chef worththeir name will have this on their menu.

PPaassttrryy500g plain flour175g icing sugar250g unsalted butter, at room temperaturegrated zest of 1 lemon1 vanilla pod, split open1 ½ eggs, beaten

LLeemmoonn ffiilllliinngg9 eggs400g caster sugargrated zest of 2 lemonsjuice of 5 lemons250ml double cream

DDeeccoorraattiioonn50g icing sugarsprigs of mint

Sift the flour and icing sugar on to a work surfaceand work in the butter. Make a well in the centre andadd the lemon zest and seeds scraped from the vanillapod. Add the eggs. Knead the mixture with your fingers, working as quickly as you can, until everything iscombined to a smooth dough. Wrap in plastic film andleave to rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Grease a flan tin witha removable base that is 20cm in diameter and 3.75cmdeep. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface toa disc large enough to line the tin and allowing anoverhang of not less than 1cm. Lay the pastry gentlyinto the tin.

Line the pastry case with greaseproof paper and fillwith enough dry baking beans or lentils (or indeed anydry pulses) to ensure the sides as well as the bottomare weighted. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the beansand greaseproof paper and trim off the overhanging

pastry, then return the flan case to the oven to bake fora further 10 minutes

Meanwhile, make the lemon filling. Whisk the eggswith the caster sugar and lemon zest in a large bowluntil smooth. Stir in the lemon juice, then add the cream.Continue to whisk until all the ingredients are thor-oughly combined. Skim any froth from the top.

Reduce the oven temperature 120°C. Pour the coldfilling into the hot pastry case (this will ensure that thecase is sealed). Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from theoven and leave to cool and set for about an hour.

When ready to serve, preheat the grill to very hot.Sift the icing sugar over the top of the tart and place itunder the grill to caramelise the sugar to a light goldenbrown. Alternatively, you can just sprinkle the tart withicing sugar without caramelising it. Cut the tart intoslices and decorate each with a sprig of mint.

• Tip The secret of a really good lemon tart is thatthe filling should be firm and clear and the pastry lightand crisp. It should never be cut immediately after it iscooked as it needs time to cool and set for at least anhour, or the filling will be too runny.
