The Nimrod MR240 years of service
He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; thereforeit is said, ‘Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before theLord.’ Genesis 10:9
Recognising the need to remain at the forefront of mar-itime warfare technology, the RAF realised that the NimrodMR1 required updating if it was to remain a viable weaponsplatform until the end of the century. On the 23 August 1979,the first Nimrod Mk2, XV 236 was transferred to RAF Kinlosshaving emerged from the British Aerospace factory at Wood-ford following conversion. The vast majority of the conversionfrom MR1 to MR2 involved a major refit of the navigationaland attack systems.
The Nimrod MR1 (Maritime Reconnaissance), which re-placed the aging Avro Shackleton, was introduced in 1969.The design of the aircraft was based upon the world’s firstever passenger jet, the Comet, whilst inspiration for the air-craft’s name came from the Bible; and to this day the MR2 isfamiliarly known as ‘the Mighty Hunter’.
During the interveningyears the aircraft hasundergone significantupgrades to its missionsystem, sensors andself defence suites, thus maintaining theNimrod as an ex-tremely capable sur-veillance and attackplatform. Since RAF StMawgan closed in1992, all Nimrod MR2shave been based atRAF Kinloss as part of325 Expeditionary AirWing, equippingNumbers 120 and 201
Squadrons along with the Operational Conversion Unit, No42 (Reserve) Squadron. Another squadron, 206 Squadronwas disbanded in 2005.
The MR2 is a versatile platform which makes it ideallysuited to operate in a wide variety of roles including: com-munications, surveillance and attack support to land and mar-itime forces; maritime reconnaissance; anti-submarinewarfare; and search and rescue. The Nimrod MR2 has madea significant contribution to all the major operations in whichthe UK has been involved in recent years. In particular theNimrod has served with distinction in the Cold War, the Falk-lands Conflict, 2 Gulf Wars, and in support of the maritimeblockade of the Balkans during the Bosnia crisis. From 2001until 2009 the Nimrod maintained a presence in the Gulf area, where crews regularly flew over Iraq, Afghanistan, the Indian
Ocean and the Gulf of Oman. Additionally it has been involvedin many other operations both in the UK and abroad, includ-ing providing support to the Lebanon crisis in July 2006. Allthis has made the Nimrod MR2 one of the busiest aircraft inthe RAF’s inventory.
Peacetime work includes surface and sub-surface sur-veillance, monitoring civilian and military shipping movementsin the North Atlantic, and participating in Joint and multi-na-tional exercises around the world. There is always an aircrafton a 2-hour readiness for search and rescue (SAR) controlledby the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre, located atKinloss. Although the SAR service is primarily for downed mil-itary aircrew and military maritime incidents, the Nimrod alsoattends many civilian emergencies and provides a valuableaddition to the work of the Maritime Coastguard Agency. Withits capability to operate as low as 200 feet whilst over the sea,at speeds of under 200 mph and equipped with a powerfulsearchlight, the Nimrod can carry out searches, assist SARhelicopters or act as an on-scene commander for major mar-itime disasters.
During the MR2’s 41 year history, it has been involved inmany high profile rescues, but equally many of its successesare still restricted information. In August 1985, Nimrods fromKinloss and St Mawgan were involved in the shepherding andultimately, the rescue of Richard Branson and the crew of theVirgin Atlantic Challenger following a failed attempt at the BlueRiband Atlantic sea-crossing record. In 1988 3 Nimrods co-or-dinated the rescue following the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster inthe North Sea.
The MR2 is to be replaced by the MRA4, with the first ofnine aircraft expected to arrive at RAF Kinloss in Spring 2010.Whilst 94% of the MRA4 is new, it builds on the capabilitiesprovided by the MR2 but can gather, process and display upto 20 times more data than its predecessor. It’s maximumspeed is slightly faster than the MR2 at 420 knots and it canfly 6000 miles or 14 hours without refuelling, almost twice asmuch as the MR2. This is the equivalent to being able to fly tothe Caribbean or Washington and back without the need torefuel.
The legacy of the MR2 though will remain now that RAFKinloss has, for the first time, got its very own gate guardian.XV 240 was po-sitioned in Sep-tember 2009and will providea permanentreminder of theMighty Hunter’ssignificance tothis area.

Pastoral letterand Church Meetings

page 6 - March 2010 SpotLight - Elgin, Lossie and District
Due to deadlines for publication pur-poses I am sitting typing up this pastoralletter on the 1st February (which isalready a couple of days late). Accord-ing to one of the newspaper articles Iread, today is dubbed as NationalSickie Day. Apparently the 1st of Febru-ary is traditionally the most popular foran unofficial day off work and it is esti-mated that up to 350,000 workers willfail to turn up for work. In any given yearwe have many days that are given overto one thing or another, St Patrick’s Day,St. Andrews Day, St, George’s day, St.David’s Day, Burns Night, May Day,Queens Birthday, Local Trade Holidays
and many others. Then there are birth-days, anniversaries and special occa-sions all that entail a certain amount ofpreparing and planning to a greater orlesser extent and to which we greatlylook forward to.
The Bible tells of a very special day, aday when Jesus will come back to thisearth, just prior to Jesus ascendingback into heaven following His resur-rection His disciples were told; thissame Jesus, who has been taken fromyou into heaven, will come back in thesame way you have seen Him go intoheaven (Acts1:11 NIV). However, mo-
mentous as this day is, no one knowswhen it will be, despite many claimingto the contrary. Indeed Jesus Himselfsays this; no one knows about that dayor hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father(Matthew 24:36 NIV). How then can weprepare for such a day, only by puttingout trust in Jesus Christ who has prom-ised to all who believe in Him forgive-ness of sins, peace with God and lifeeverlasting; now that is something tolook forward to.

One of the strengths of Logie Steading is that
all the businesses are individually owned and
run by people who have a passion for their
‘trade’. Gill and Weller de Oliveira are bring-
ing their passion for good food to the café.
The Olive Tree Cafe
It has always been a dreamof ours to run a coffee shop. From the middle of February, the cafe formerly known as‘Treats at Logie’ will become‘The Olive Tree Café’,derived from our surnameOliveira.
After eight years at Logie, Emma Swan is moving onto new ventures. We will continue her ethos of greatfood sourced locally and seasonally, adding a flareof our own incorporating our backgrounds.
I grew up in Scotland and, coming from Brazil, myhusband Weller originates from a culture of warmthand genuine hospitality. We met in Italy in the beau-tiful metropolis of Florence where I was attending theApicius Culinary School. Our experience working to-gether in the Italian culture heightened our appreci-
ation of great food andwonderful coffee. Nowwith two fun loving boyswe look forward toopening our doors toyou to dabble in somedelicious delicacies overfreshly brewed coffeeand tea at The Olive TreeCafé, Logie Steading.01309 611733

Logie Steading Business Profile One of the strengths of Logie Steading is that all the businesses are individually
owned and run by people who have a passion for their ‘trade’. Gill and Weller de
Oliveira are bringing their passion for good food to the café:
The Olive Tree Café
It has always been a dream of ours to run a coffee shop. From the middle of
February, the cafe formerly known as ‘Treats at Logie’ will become ‘The Olive
Tree Café’, derived from our surname Oliveira.
After eight years at Logie, Emma Swan is moving on to new ventures. We will
continue her ethos of great food sourced locally and seasonally, adding a flare of
our own incorporating our backgrounds.
I grew up in Scotland and, coming from Brazil, my husband Weller originates
from a culture of warmth and genuine hospitality. We met in Italy in the
beautiful metropolis of Florence where I was attending the Apicius Culinary
School. Our experience working together in the Italian culture heightened our
appreciation of great food and wonderful coffee. Now with two fun loving boys
we look forward to opening our doors to you to dabble in some delicious
delicacies over freshly brewed coffee and tea at The Olive Tree Café, Logie
Steading. Gill de Oliveira 01309 611733

The Great Wall Run!
Sweet & SourChicken
This month we are going all Chinese with thisgreat recipe and it’s really easy. The reason we havegone Chinese this month is that I am going to Beijingin May to run the Great Wall of China Marathon. Some say it is the hardest marathon in the world andsome say if there is one marathon you have to runbefore you die it would be the great wall.
The Great Wall Marathon will be a tough, beau-tiful and definitely extraordinary experience. The5164 steps of the Great Wall will put me to the test,The Great Wall Marathon is the ideal way tocombine an unusual running event with exploring oneof the world’s most astonishing sights.
We have hooked up with Tom Chamberlain fromMarys Meals Charity to raise money. I would like tosay a big thanks to DC (Doug Cowie) and the Sundaymorning club for helping me get the miles in!!
For the sauce4 tbsp chicken stock2 tbsp tomato ketchup1 tbsp soy sauce2 tbsp rice wine vinegar2 tbsp caster sugar
For the batter1 egg yolkfreshly ground black pepper1½ tbsp cornflour1 tbsp milk
Ingredients200g white rice4 tbsp vegetable oil250g chicken breast, diced75g carrots, cut into thin 'matchsticks'60g baby sweetcorn, sliced60g green beans, trimmed2 tbsp sliced spring onions
MethodCook the rice according to the instructions on
the packet then make the sauce by mixing togetherall the sauce ingredients in a bowl.
Beat together the batter ingredients in anotherbowl.
Heat two tablespoons of oil in a saucepan. Dipthe chicken in the batter, then fry it carefully. Removefrom the pan and set aside. Next, stir fry the carrots, baby corn and green beans in the remaining two ta-blespoons of oil for four minutes.
Add the sauce and boil for one minute. Then addthe chicken and spring onions and heat through.Spoon a helping of sweet and sour chicken on top ofa bed of rice. Serve.
Climbing the Great Wall of China might not takeyour breath away but the scenery most certainly will.
Happy Cooking!

Matters Arising
• Annual Grant. The Secretary
advised that the annual grant will now
be paid every six months and the first
payment of £441.45 has been re-
ceived.
• Caravans on Lossie Green. Alex
Macmillan advised that he had re-
ceived an update from Jake Mitchell
of Moray Council advising that one of
the caravans had been issued with a
“7 - Day Removal notice” on 12th
January 2010 and the occupants of
the two remaining caravans were
likely to be re-housed in the near
future. He also said that he had high-
lighted to Mr Mitchell that when all the
caravans were removed it would be
an ideal opportunity to deny future
travellers from camping on this site.
Concerns were also raised with
regard to the costs that may be in-
curred by Moray Council when the
site is required for the Flood Allevia-
tion Scheme should travellers con-
tinue to be allowed access to this
area. It was proposed by George Lit-
tlejohn and Seconded by Murray
Ross for Alex Macmillan to draft a
letter to the Chief Executive of Moray
Council highlighting the Community
Council’s concerns.
Police Business & Terrorism
Update
• Inspector Mowat advised that a
number of motorists had been issued
with tickets for inappropriate parking
on the Plainstones.
• Murray Ross raised concerns again
regarding motorists using their mobile
phones whilst driving. Inspector
Mowat advised that it is pursued as
much as possible but would highlight
the concerns to the Traffic Police and
Divisional staff. Alex Macmillan asked
if it was possible for members of the
public to inform the Police should they
witness a driver using their mobile
whilst driving. Inspector Mowat
advised that calls received by the
public regarding this would be fol-
lowed-up.
Committee Reports
• Planning. The Chairman advised
that he had been in contact with some
residents regarding the plans for the
new Elgin Academy and issues they
wish to raise regarding the location of
the school. The Chairman was to
arrange a meeting with these resi-
dents to take forward their concerns
and would update members at the
next meeting.
• Bryan Watson advised that he had
received a copy of the urban Design
Guide for Moray regarding how new
housing developments may be
changed in the future.
Recreation, Leisure & Environment
• Anne Glover said that she had been
in contact with Ian Bruce, Moray
Council Head of Environment Serv-
ices, regarding the Wetlands at the
Wards. Mr Bruce suggested that any
work carried out should be supervised
by a professional, but he would en-
courage support from youth groups.
Bryan Watson advised that clearance
of the Wetlands had been a bi-annual
event for the Scouts and other groups
for many years.
Roads & Transportation
• Manhole covers - Murray Ross
advised that he had been in contact
with Mr David Anderson of Scottish
Water regarding the manhole covers
and was informed that work would
commence week beginning 11th
January 2010. However, in view of
the weather Murray Ross agreed to
speak with Mr Anderson when the
roads were clear of snow.
• Murray Ross also stated that he
would be contacting Mr Ralph new-
lands of Bear Scotland, Keith Office
with regard to the drain blockages on
the A96 when the snow had cleared.
• Murray Ross advised that he was
disappointed at the comments made
in the letter page of the northern Scot
criticising Moray Council regarding
the gritting of pavements and roads.
Murray Ross felt that more people
should take responsibility for clearing
their own areas and that of elderly
neighbours.
AOCB
• Anne Glover advised that a Flood
Relief Fund meeting was due to take
place on Friday and she would
update the Committee at the next
meeting.
• Alex Macmillan said that he was
pleased to see the new “Welcome to
the City and Royal Burgh of Elgin,
Historic Cathedral City” signs put up
by Bear Scotland on the A96 – yet
another CC initiative.
