As it was approaching the 70th anniversary of RAFLossiemouth, the Mountaineering Club looked to find asuitable expedition to both celebrate the event and tochallenge the club in both planning and execution. TheHimalayas has always been the ultimate destination for themajority of aspiring climbers and was a clear choice for themembers. Mera Peak, a 6400m trekking peak in the Makalu

Barun National Park ofNepal, matched all ofthe requirements of re-moteness, altitude,technical difficulty andaffordability and onceselected, the expeditionplanning began inearnest early in 2008.

Out of a group ofaround 30 applicants a

team of 12 was selected as expedition members based ontheir experience, ability, fitness, availability and what skills theycould bring along to increase the chance of success in theendeavour. Not all of those selected had been to altitudebefore and so training was carried out in the Alps in thesummer of 2009 to give those who required it experience inhigh altitude walking, rope work and crevasse rescue.

The expedition set off on Thursday 15th Oct 2009 whichis in the middle of the Nepalese post monsoon period andalthough this was the autumn and getting cold it wouldprovide a few weeks of settled dry weather. The team travelledto Kathmandu where we met Lakpa Tenji Sherpa, ourNepalese Sirdar, who was to be our guide on the expedition.Equipment was checked and repacked for the flight to Luklaand the team’s spirits were high as we left civilisation behindas we finally headed into the mountains.

Nepal is not a large country but getting around can beproblematic, the locals judge distances to the next village notin miles but in days travelled, for once in the mountains thereare no roads only tracks over high level passes and down lowvalleys. We spent 9 days trekking with our porters to get intoBase Camp on the mountain, although this was ideal accli-matisation training for the summit attempt. As we progressedup the mountain the difficulties increased, the falling airpressure and night time temperatures slowing our earlymorning exit from the warmth of our sleeping bags and dailyupward progress to little more than a crawl.

Summit day fell on 2nd Nov. We left our camp at 3 amhaving breakfasted on porridge and noodles and it was verydark, very windy and very cold. Moving as two roped partieswe climbed steadily but slowly up the mountain, the altitudeand incline taking a heavy toll on our progress, till at one pointI had to stop to throw up. Eventually the altitude put paid toany further progress for two of us and at 6300m we turned

back, we were only 140m from thetop. As we descended the sun risecame to warm us and our recoverystarted. We were soon joined by twoothers, one of whom had begun tofeel the first effects of frostbite on histoes and so took the sensibledecision to come down, only 100mfrom the top. As we sat in HighCamp enjoying a brew, we werereunited with the rest of the teamwho were also driven back down bythe cold, as they prepared to fixropes for the final part of the ascent, only 40m from the top.

It would seem that we had failed; we had not achievedour goal. In fact what had been the point, all that effort,months of planning and training, the worry for our familieswhen we lost communications, not to mention the cost?Maybe we should just have stayed at home; we could havejust gone for a walk up Ben Rinnes with the dogs!

But we didn’t, we went to the Himalayas, we took achallenge, we stepped out of the boat, out of the comfort zoneand did something amazing. Life is like that, you have tochallenge yourself or you aren’t moving forward, you aredying; standing still is not an option. You don’t need to go asfar as Nepal, maybe just a 5 minute jog on the beach, younever know where it might take you; the longest journey startswith the first step, but you only get out what you put in.

Although you can get out a whole lot more; filled up tooverflowing, packed down and topped up again. I have foundit is this way with my faith as a Christian, unless I challenge itand work at it, I so easily slip and the ways of the world comeflooding in and life seems to become so difficult. Nobody eversaid it would be easy but everyday I give thanks for a graciousand forgiving Lord who gives me the strength for the realchallenge. The truth is out there, if you are prepared to look.

The next day 3 of the guys felt strong enough for asecond attempt and summited easily on a beautiful, windlessand sunlit morning.

New Year, New Me

So another Hogmanay has comeand gone and we’ve all made resolu-tions - which we’ll maybe keep…for amonth. Am I being too optimistic? Forso often I find it easier to say that I’ll doa thing than to actually carry it out. Ofcourse it is possible to change things inyour life; people do it all the time. Theychange jobs, partners and house,clothes and adopt a new fitter lifestyle -not necessarily all at the same time orwith the same frequency. But all toooften when we do make a change in ourlives we find the same old problemscoming to the surface. The new job stillcomes with irritating colleagues anddemanding bosses; the new partnermay be absolutely wonderful but thereare still arguments over money. Thenew house or new clothes are great fora time but - like all new things they don’tstay new forever. And what about thatnew fitness focussed lifestyle? A surveyrevealed that people who walk dogs

(that’s me folks) are most likely to be stillregularly walking their dog a year on; bycontrast people who join a gym aremuch less likely to be at the gym a yearfrom now. A dog is for life; gym mem-bership is for a moment.

But wait - don’t go and scrap thoseresolutions! It’s not hopeless. Of coursereal change is difficult and does requireus to resolve to change, to commit to itand persevere at it. It does require adecision from us and a willingness toembrace that change. But for real andlasting change we need help; not justthe kind of help you might get from afitness guru or financial adviser but thekind you get from someone muchstronger and smarter than you and I willever be.

Paul, who was one of the greatChristian writers, was someone whospent the early part of his life trying todo his best - constantly making resolu-tions to be a better person. He was

actually quite proud of his efforts untilhe realised that he was in fact goingbackwards. It was then he found that itwas Jesus - the crucified Lord - whocould provide him with the new life heso desperately wanted but couldn’tachieve by himself. He said if we havebeen united with Christ in his death, ‘wewill certainly also be united with him inhis resurrection. For we know that ourold self was crucified with him so thatthe body of sin might be done awaywith, that we should no longer be slavesto sin - because anyone who has diedhas been freed from sin.’ (Romans 6:5)So if we have ‘died’ with Christ, webelieve that we will also live with him.That new life with Christ is not only thehappy result of his sacrifice; it’s also themeans by which those resolutions tobecome a new person are translatedinto a living reality.

Braised Belly of Pork with Herb Crust

This spectacular dish regularly appears on ourChapter One menus. Belly Pork may be a cheapercut but responds beautifully to slow gentlecooking becoming meltingly tender. You mayneed to order this cut in advance from yourbutcher. You can serve it with potato puree,lightly wilted spinach and fresh herb tagliatelle.

Pork4 tablespoons Olive Oil1 whole belly joint about 1 kg1 Carrot chopped1 Onion chopped1 Leek chopped1 Celery Stick chopped100ml Sherry Vinegar200ml Soy Sauce1.5 litres Chicken Stock

Crust100g Fresh Basil100g Fresh Coriander100g Fresh Bread Crumbs100g Parmesan

Heat a shallow, flameproof, cast ironcasserole or deep sauté pan with lid until you feela strong heat rising. Add 2 tablespoons olive oiland brown the pork joint, turning until caramelizedall over. Remove and place on a plate.

Add the remaining olive oil to the pan andsauté the vegetables for about 5 minutes.

Deglaze with sherry vinegar and cook untilreduced to half. Then return the pork joint to thepan placing on top of the vegetables. Pour in the

soy sauce and stock. Bring to the boil andpartially cover the pan. Braise slowly at a lowheat, or in the oven at 170C/gas mark 3. Cook for2 ½ - 3 hours. Baste the pork occasionally withthe pan juices, until the meat feels very tender.Lift out the meat and cut in to 4 even squarepieces and set aside.

Put basil, coriander, bread crumbs andparmesan in food processor and blitz until you geta crumble texture. Heap the mixture on top ofeach slice of pork belly and place in oven on abaking tray at 200c for 5 minutes and crust shouldform. Remove from oven and serve with fresh herbtagliatelle.

Secretary was to obtainsignatures from the Chairman, ViceChair and Secretary and send to MorayCouncil for ratification.Police BusinessInspector Mowat advising that over 50motorists had been warned over usingthe Plainstones; there have been norepeat offenders that he was aware ofand the Police will now be movingtowards enforcement following thisperiod of education.Community ChampionsAlex Macmillan advised that he hadattended a meeting to discussCommunity Champions. He stated thatthe original idea of CommunityChampions was a way in which thePolice could obtain information from thecommunity anonymously and pass the

information on to the appropriateagency. He said that this idea had neverbeen fully taken up and that he felt thatit was something that Community Coun-cillors and Area Forum Members couldtake forward as a way of community en-gagement. At the Induction Meeting asuggestion was put forward regardingholding regular surgeries of theCommunity Council whereby membersof the public could air their concerns andthese concerns could then be passed tothe relevant agencies or be dealt with bythe Community Council and then fedback to the community as appropriate.It was agreed that Alex would take theidea forward and discuss with ChiefInspector MacKenzie and Area Forums.It was also suggested that theCommunity Council have their ownwebpage and e:mail address for thecommunity to e:mail their concernsanonymously, this was agreed inprinciple. Denise Gormley agreed tosupport and to develop the proposal.Alex Macmillan advised that help fromall Community Councillors would beneeded.PlanningBryan Watson advised that an applica-tion had been received from KentuckyFried Chicken to build on land adjacentto the Reiket Lane roundabout on theA96 next to Alan Milne and he washappy with the plans, although thewindow had now closed for anycomment.AOCBThe Chairman advised that memberswill be receiving a letter in the nearfuture with regard to the Budget Consul-tation and meetings will be taking placethroughout Moray. The Chairman askedmembers to inform as many people as

possible regarding the proposed savingsand ask them to email their views. TheChairman also advised that a meeting isto take place at the Town Hall on 24thNovember 2009 between 7.00 - 9.00pmand asked for as many members aspossible to attend. Cllr Russell advisedthat a hard copy of the consultationdocument is available in libraries andDenise Gormley advised that thedocument could be downloaded fromthe Moray Council Webpage. AlexMacmillan urged members to lookbeyond the consultation pack and if theyhave any different ideas not mentionedthen to put these views forward.Alex Macmillan advised that theCommunity Council’s Data ProtectionRegistration is due for renewal; acheque for £35.00 would be required.Alex Macmillan reminded members tosend any comments to him as soon aspossible regarding the proposed LocalLicensing Forum action on ‘Bring yourOwn Booze’ events.Anne Glover advised that she would bein a position to give an up-date on theFlood Relief Fund at the next meeting.Harry Torry advised that the Athletics As-sociation at Morriston Park are applyingfor a £50,000 grant from PeoplesMillions.Cllr Russell advised that Moray Councilis now able to accept householdbatteries at recycling points.Alex Macmillan thanked members fortheir attendance at the RemembranceDay Celebrations and the MemorialService held at New Elgin.
