Carter County 4-H Goes Camping

Thirty-two Carter County students, ages 9-14, recently attended North Central 4-H Camp in Carlisle, Kentucky from June 13th -16th. Campers took part in a variety of activities that included canoeing, archery, crafts, cooking, hiking, volleyball, soccer, fishing, water Olympics, field games, dancing, and much more. Gray-son Rural Electric sponsored a reptile and amphibian program that allowed the campers to see and touch a variety of snakes, salamanders, and turtles. The week’s activities concluded with the notorious clover camp fire. The campers were accompanied by six teen coun-selors and six adult counselors. A special thanks to Carter County Farm, Carter Caves Homemaker Club, and the Grayson Day Homemaker Club for donating to the 4-H Camp scholarship fund.

4-H NRESci Academy students attend Marine Science and Coastal Ecology Trip

to Tybee Island Cheron Flaugher and Paul Holbrook, both 3rd year students in the U.K. 4-H Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Academy and freshman at East Carter High School, participat-ed in the program’s Marine Science and Coastal Ecology trip to Tybee Island, Georgia this sum-mer. Flaugher and Holbrook joined 12 other NRESci students in learning about the water, forestry and wildlife resources outside of Ken-tucky. While on the trip, the students engaged in hands-on learning opportunities at the Ten-nessee Aquarium where they learned about the water and aquatic resources of the moun-tainous region. They toured the Gully Branch Tree Farm in Georgia to learn about pine tree plantation management and how it differs from Kentucky’s hardwood forest management. The students also met with biologists at the Savan-nah National Wildlife Refuge to learn about wa-terfowl management and concluded their trip with a visit to the Marine Education Center on Skidaway Island where they went out on an estuary trawl. While on the boat the students sampled, sorted and identified organisms found in the tidal rivers and sound around the island. This week-long trip provided the stu-dents a very hands-on learning opportunity to compare and contrast very different ecosys-tems from their home state of Kentucky. State Communications Day

Showcases 4-H’ers Skills Carter County 4-H Members Earn Blue Ribbons

Public speaking is something many of us dread, but when done successfully, it’s a life skill that can advance your career and open the door to leadership opportunities. Not to men-tion, it helps you build confidence and composure under pres-sure. That’s why communication projects have been a longstanding tradition among Kentucky 4-H.

Competitions are a great way for young people to gain public speaking experience in front of others. Youth across the state highlighted their public speaking abilities during 4-H State Communications Day on July 9 on the University of Kentucky campus.

State Communications Day is a culminating event for com-munications programs in a calendar year. To reach this compe-tition, youth have successfully qualified at the county and dis-trict levels in either speech, demonstration or mock interviews. Their presentations during State Communications Day repre-sent months of hard work, research and practice.

Once youth master public speaking skills, many times it allows them to take on other leadership roles within 4-H and their community, such as initiating and leading a community service project, becoming a club officer or helping younger youth learn a new skill.

All nine of the Carter County 4-H members competing in this year’s State Communication Day contests earned blue rib-bons this year. The blue ribbon signifies excellence. In addi-tion to the blue ribbons, Autumn and Ariah Egleston (Olive Hill Elementary) placed third overall in the junior team demonstra-tion category and Cheron Flaugher placed third in the senior animal science demonstration contest. Flaugher will be a freshman at East Carter High School this fall. Other competi-tors included Kelsie Adams (Carter City Elementary); Jaspreet Kaur and Riley Weaver (East Carter Middle School); Derek Wil-liams (OHES); and Danielle Underwood and Jacob Greenhill (West Carter High School).

Kentucky State Fair 4-H Projects

Cloverville is an annual attraction of every Kentucky State Fair. Cloverville offers an opportunity for 4-H’ers to showcase their abilities and compete for statewide ribbons and awards. Regardless of whether they win, the young people who have exhibits at Cloverville are already winners, as they won their county compe-tition to advance to the state fair. Cloverville gives fellow Kentuckians good examples of 4-H projects and our young people’s work ethic. Some of these projects took weeks, months and sometimes an entire year to complete. The 8,000 projects display skills in areas as diverse as science, the home, and arts and crafts. Twenty-seven students from Carter County entered 49 projects in this year’s fair, including four class champi-ons.

Elizabeth Middleton (WCMS) – Embroidery class champion & Needlework Division Grand Champion

Jacob Greenhill (WCHS) – Woodworking class champion & Division Reserve Champion

4-H Style Engineer Day Camp

Seven students gathered at the Extension Office in July for the two day Style Engi-neer Camp. The group learned a few of scientific principles behind designing clothes. During the camp, participants made whacky armor and gremlin pins; took a polar walk; and used what they had learned about fabrics to create their owns designs. Thanks to Hughes Net for spon-soring Tech Takeover activities in KY 4-H.

Congratulations to Riley Weaver for

being selected as NRESci Scholar.
