Public Speaking

• Speeches– Youth selects topic, but it must relate to 4-H in

some way– The judges will not ask you questions– The top two competitors in each age division

advance to district competition– Time requirements: • Juniors and Intermediates 3-7 minutes• Seniors 5-7 minutes

• Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks– These are different than speeches because visuals are

used such as posters, props or a Power Point presentation

– The judges may ask youth questions– This presentation must relate to 4-H in some way– No live animals may be used or product brands– Demonstrations may be completed by a 2 person team– Every blue ribbon presentation may advance to District

Events– Time requirements:

• Juniors and Intermediates 3-12 minutes• Seniors 5-12 minutes

Share the Fun Talent Show

• Categories include:– Instrumental– Vocal– Dance– Dramatic (skits, pantomimes, puppetry, etc.)

• Or a combination of the above

• Acts can be:– Presented by an individual or a group of up to 5 4-

Hmembers• Time Requirements: – 3-5 minutes

Poster Contest• Themes include:

– Healthy Lifestyles– Science, Engineering and Technology (SET)– Citizenship

• Classes: – Watercolor– Pen and Ink– Pencil– Marker– Crayon– Acrylic– Special Effects– Computer Enhanced

Photography Contest

• Classes include:– People– Animals– Plants/Flora– Scenic– Architectural elements– Still life– Hat tricks and Magic– Photo story– Black and white– 4-H theme

• You may submit up to 5 entries in separate classes (all electronic)

• Only photos taken since June 1st of last year will be accepted

Master Chef in Training• Only cloverbud and junior aged youth can use box mixes• Each youth may have a maximum of two entries • When food is dropped off for judging the day before county events, you must also submit

a 3x4 index card with the name and age of youth, the food group and category on one side and recipe on the other side

• Judges will take taste, appearance and overall display into account• In the event of a tie, nutrition and complexity of recipe will be taken into account• Food categories include:

– Dairy– Vegetables– Fruit– Grains– Proteins

• Classes1) Sweets2) Breads3) Finger foods

Chicken or Turkey BBQ Contest

• Youth are scored on barbecue skills, sensory evaluation and presentation

• Each youth will have 3 hours to prepare two 1 ¼ to 1 ½ pound chicken/turkey halves provided by 4-H agents

• Youth must provide their own grill and any other utensils and supplies necessary

• Meat may not be injected or marinated

Parental Responsibility

• Assist youth in seeking information and following correct rules

• Help youth by timing their presentation/act• Be an encourager• Pre-register youth with the Extension Service at

least one week prior to the contest• On the day of competition, no parents will be

allowed to assist with set up and the audience will not be allowed to ask questions while judging is occurring

Important Dates to Remember:

• You must pre-register for all county event categories by March 1st

• March 6th-submit all entries for Chef in Training contest between 8-10 AM

• March 7th-County Events Day in Callahan beginning at 9 AM

• April 25th- District Events Day• State Competition will occur during 4-H University

(formerly known as 4-H Congress) in Gainesville the week of July 27-31st for senior aged 4-H members
