1.0 SCOPE

This Guideline provides recommended davit inspections and the minimum acceptable criteria. It applies to davits used on vessel manway covers and lifting davits installed on vessels.

tank (See Figure 1). 3.2 Vessel Lifting Davit: A device used to lift or lower items from a vessel platform (See Figure 2). 4.0 INSPECTION FREQUENCY 4.1 Manway and vessel davits generally go unused until a turnaround where depending on the plant

specific process, the interval could be as high as 7 years. In these cases, inspection will have the greatest impact if it is performed just prior to use. Inspection of lifting and rigging equipment prior to use is a good practice. In order to accomplish this activity, a management system must be in place. This could include revisions to lifting and rigging related plant/turnaround procedures, check lists and other applicable documents.

4.2 Some davits are used quite frequently and a time-based inspection might be more appropriate.

API 510 and API 572 requires visual inspection of davits, ladder and platform clips and other structures attached to the vessel during the vessel external visual inspection. Visual inspections of some vessels are performed every 5 years per the requirement of IS 202. Verify that the vessel external inspection plan contains visual inspections of davits.

5.0 INSPECTION AND REMEDIATION PROCEDURES 5.1 Manway Cover Davits Refer to Figure 1. If the manway davits are found inoperable, they should not be forced open, as

this can result in damage to the davit arm, failure of the arm or its components, and possible injury to personnel/equipment. Perform the following for manway cover davits as applicable:

5.1.1 Visually inspect the davit arm and pivot assembly for corrosion, cracking, improper design and

installation. Example form is provided in Exhibit 1 for documenting inspections and recommendations.

5.1.2 Davit pipes can be subjected to internal corrosion depending on the type of design. Perform UT

thickness checks on all davits in locations as shown in Figure 1 as TML’s (Thickness Measurement Locations) whenever the following conditions are observed:

5.1.2.1 The end of the davit near the connection device is open to atmosphere. 5.1.2.2 Damage mechanisms such as minor corrosion is found. 5.1.2.3 The davit arm does not meet the size requirements of EG 3000, Figure 6-10 or Figure 6-12. 5.1.3 Table 1, provides minimum acceptable thickness’ for the davit arms not meeting the size

requirements of EG 3000, Figure 6-10 or Figure 6-12. Davit arms that do not meet the values listed in the table, or those with severe external corrosion need to be replaced with one that meets the requirements of EG 3000.

Requires the use of schedule 160 pipe for davit arm. 5.1.4 If the davit arm is found open at the end, but otherwise in acceptable condition, close the end by

welding a cap or plate on the arm. 5.1.4.1 The davit arm should be removed from the socket pipe for additional visual inspection if the

socket pipe and/or davit arm inside the socket is susceptible for corrosion. 5.1.5 When the connecting rod is welded directly to the manway cover, it should be removed and

install a lift bar and eyebolt per EG 3000, Figure 6-10 or Figure 6-12. Extra care must be exercised in opening manways with this type of design due to the bending moment at the point where the connecting rod is welded to the manway cover. This design increases the

susceptibility to failure.

5.1.5.1 If remediation cannot be made prior to use of a davit arm with this type of connection rod, extra

care must be exercised in opening manways with this type of design, due to the bending moment at the point where the connection rod is welded to the manway cover. This design increases the susceptibility to failure; therefore, a secondary back-up connection should be installed prior to removal of all bolts in the manway. Examples of this might include installing a shackle through a bolt hole and attaching a wire rope or other device to the shackle and to the davit arm.

5.1.6 Nuts should be on top of davit arm. If one nut on top and one on bottom this should be changed

to allow for more freedom of movement. 5.2 Vessel Lifting Davits

Refer to Figure 2 for standard vessel davit design. The maximum load capacity of a vessel davit is shown in EG 3000, Figure 6.9. For other types of Stationary lifting devices, refer to EG 1017.

5.2.1 Visually inspect the davit pipe for cracking or corrosion. Ensure the davit load capacity is weld

stenciled in a prominent location on the davit. Example form is provided in Exhibit 2 for documenting inspections and recommendations.

5.2.2 If the davit arm is found open at the end, but otherwise in acceptable condition, close the end by

welding a cap or plate on the end. 5.2.3 If so equipped, visually inspect the block and shackle, sheave components, and eye connection

for corrosion and damage. Inspect the wire rope; remove any sections that are frayed, split and/or corroded. Refer to EG 3000, Figures 6-1 and 6-2, for standard davit detail information.

5.2.4 Visually inspect the components attaching the davit to the vessel for corrosion or other damage.

Refer to EG 3000, Figures 6-3 and 6-5, for standard davit detail information. Perform Nondestructive Testing (NDT) on welds attaching supports to the vessel if visual inspection reveals linear indications.

5.2.5 Visually inspect the pivot assembly. Refer to EG 3000, Figure 6-5. Ensure the bearing assembly

is in good working order and is lubricated. Check rotation of the davit. 5.2.6 Load test the davit assembly prior to use. If records show that the vessel-lifting davit has been

load tested within the last twelve (12) months, this will not be required. Rated capacity for the davit is generally marked on the davit. If rated capacity is not known then it shall not be used until its capacity can be determined by calculations and subsequently tested by a qualified individual. EG 3000 provides load capacity for davits designed in accordance with those details.

5.2.7 After successful completion of load test, the value of the load test should be weld stenciled in a

prominent location on the davit arm if different than what is already in place, and the old markings need to be removed. Refer to EG 3000, Figure 6-1. The test record and all associated records are to be maintained in the equipment file.
