INTROSPECTION

THANKSGIVING:-

On behalf of everyone in ISST, Saathi Center and on my personal behalf too, I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to WIPRO CARES for supporting us too immensely to put in words. I am sure it is ‘His’ blessings which reaches us through you.

Right now I am thinking enthusiastically about the expansion for the next dynamic year. I think this is the very important step and all of us must try to do better than yesterday. We have to fulfil multiple missions. By mission I do not mean to achieve a great goal in the remote future, it is whatever we are doing right now.

Looking at the eyes of these less privileged beings, which say so much without speaking, there are no big messages, only enthusiasm to shout “Go on.,,…,continue……keep moving forward”

We don’t have to have any more words than Thank You.

INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAM:-

More so, underprivileged children of our society desperately need this humane gesture more often. They are badly deprived of love, care, and compassion. At Saathi Centre Bachpan is a programme to extend love and care at the first place and all other activities are woven in the fabric of love and compassion.

Pre-Assessment:- To identify the existing level of the child ‘Bachpan’ conducts a small evaluation to know the level of the child so that the child could be given the level appropriate guidance and teaching. With almost 15 years of experience our teachers have recognized this need because, due to not so good quality of teaching in govt. schools there are a number of older(bigger classes) children whose basics are very weak and many times they are not able to solve the problems of the standards (class)in which they are studying. We teach these children according to their level. This is the main reason that we have not formed groups according to their classes but according to their level.

As and when child reaches to his or her class appropriate level we graduate him/her to next level or group.

Some of the times we arrange a trainer but most of the time ISST staff provides training to the children. The vision of this activity is to give a breathing space to the children to express their views, thoughts, ideas and imaginations as most of the children in slum clusters don’t have space to discuss their problem and as a result frustration, anger and anti social behavior er upts. Through these activities they express their emotions get a solution for their problems.

Creative activities:-

Limitations live only in mind. Children live creatively and dream creatively .Through these activities ISST, Saathi Centre also tries to catch the creative skill of children. The children are very creative by birth but they feel shy and hesitate to express themselves. Children are experts in art and craft; they make really wonderful things with waste material like old newspapers and plastic bottles.

CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR AND PERSONALITY TRAITS:-

Cleanliness &hygiene:-

Children are wearing clean cloths. Taking bath & brushing teeth every day. Cutting their nails regularly. Many children, who were earlier having lice, now have clean heads. They are keeping their class room clean. They regularly wash their hands before and after eating everything.

Language and manner:-

Many children earlier using abusive language have now changed their ways even in their homes; their behavior has changed as reported by their parents.

They greet each other and their teachers and every one when they come to center. This mannerism learnt by them by observing their teacher, who used to welcome and greet every child coming to outré.

Confidence :-

Many children who join our centre are extremely shy and hesitant in the beginning but after participating in various activities and discussions they become vocal and expressive.

As every child was encouraged to participate, their level of confidence has gone up.

School performance:- All of the 25 children who appeared in 10th exam last year, passed out. Many children secured position in their class. Reading and writing skills have drastically improved.

Team spirit and helping each other:-

Children divide into class wise group whenever they are free and do group study, especially we encourage 10th & 12th class children to do group studies and clear their doubts with teachers. Apart from this older children help younger ones in their studies.

Making an Art of Life ( What we learned):-

Every day lived in rhythm makes the life a piece of art. Florence Nightingale once said to her students “ I would try to be learning every day to the last hour of my Life…,.When I could no longer learn by nursing others, I would learn by being nursed, by seeing nurses practice upon me.”

At this centre, which has been named Saathi Center by its honored students, we all learn from each other and in reality we learn more than we teach. They are our guides and companions who train us to behave humbly, listen patiently and keep our tempers when circumstances are not so favorable

Unity and Responsibility:-

It is no exaggeration that the steady efforts of our staff members, volunteers and student leaders set in motion create ripple effects of reaching out to the communities at large. The purpose is to create a social environment where these little human beings enjoy themselves at ease.

Achievers of Saathi Center:-

Although every child of this Center is a achiever in one manner or the other. Some earn grades while others create value with their behaviours’, manners and etiquettes and helping others. But when we turn around and see what happened to those whom we cherished and cared long ago in this journey, we feel a deep sense of satisfaction to see where they have reached. Although we are unable to connect to everyone but many of them keep regular contact. The stories of these students are very enlightening. We are sharing some of them here (see annexure)

What they created:-

The year saw many beautiful creations by children. These are arts, crafts, music, dance and theatre. But the most beautiful and thought provoking were the stories and poems by them which they truly did with their heart and soul. The stories of their own experiences of life are truly amazing.(see annexure)

We have many stories and beautiful experiences in hand. Publication of these may prove to be an insightful and learning tool for the elders, teachers and schools to adopt more innovative and humble approaches to discipline their offsprings and disciples.
