Though EDSA-Micro Corporation makes every effort to keep its functionality on the older Microsoft operating systems, the capabilities of the older Windows platforms are easily overloaded by todays graphics-intensive applications. If things are not working OK for you, a large percentage of problems are on systems that are older than Windows 2000. For this reason, we greatly recommend the upgrade of your operating system to Windows 2000 or XP.

EDSA recommends that the working project files be stored on a local hard disk, instead of on a network drive, because the slowdowns in the network are causing many problems in the operation of the program and its storage of data. We recommend that the user back up the files by copying to the network. Your IT staff can help you create a Batch file to copy your projects to the network, and can set this up to be run on a scheduled basis.

International Users Important Information Regional Settings EDSA provides a robust modeling environment that permits the modeling of a power system with great precision in size and scale. By following these few steps, you will ensure the smooth operation of your EDSA software.

Please go to Start>Settings>Control Panel Choose Regional Options We suggest the following settings under the computers Regional Settings

to resolve these issues related to how comma's and periods are used in Europe that are causing the scaling issues and other anomalies.

Please set the “digit grouping symbol field” under regional settings to a space or blank field.

Also, please select a space or blank field for the “digit grouping symbol field” in the “numbers and currency” menu.

Finally, please set comma in the numbers field. If you do not do set your regional settings correctly, busbars and other length dependant equipment will not display properly and you may get an Actrix.exe graph engine error. This is due to the fact that for example a value of 1.001 (one point 001 meter busbar is read as 1,001 (one thousand one)) which creates graphic rendering problems. Your Regional Settings should appear as shown below. Do not install or use EDSA Technical until these changes have been made.

Licensing and installation options EDSA can be installed under two different configurations, which you can choose from:

Local Host License (default configuration)

A local host license configuration locks the EDSA license to one workstation. This configuration is typically used if EDSA will only be running on a single workstation, a workstation that is not connected to a Windows network, or a laptop that may use EDSA software while not connected to the network

Floating License

The floating license configuration allows you to install EDSA on more workstations than the number of EDSA licenses purchased. An EDSA License Server (simply an NT or Windows 2000 service called EDSA License Server) is installed and configured. The role of this service is to control access to the EDSA licenses by limiting the number of concurrent EDSA users to the number of purchased EDSA licenses.

For example, an engineering company may purchase a 2-seat EDSA Technical license, and configure 10 workstations with EDSA.

The EDSA License Server will allow any of the workstations to run EDSA,

however, it will not allow any more than 2 workstations to use EDSA at one time.

EDSA uses the FlexLM license management technology from Macrovision. To learn more, you may go to the following link: http://www.macrovision.com/solutions/esd/index.html

The floating license configuration requires:

a Windows NT or 2000/2003 network configured with TCP/IP and static IP address for the license server.

A server or workstation running Windows 2000/2003 or Windows NT 4 (Service Pack 6) or higher, that is configured as the EDSA License Server is also required.

DO NOT INSTALL EDSA TECHNICAL AND THE EDSA LICENSE SERVER ON THE SAME WORKSTATION.

Compaq Teaming

FlexLM is unable to grab the HostID when Compaq Teaming is enabled. Therefore, this is not a valid configuration for EDSA License Server since FlexLM does not support Compaq Teaming.

The EDSA Client License Manager manages EDSA Technical licensing on Single user workstations. See the section EDSA Client License Manager for more information about this licensing component. The EDSA Server License Manager manages EDSA Technical licensing in a networked environment with an EDSA License Server. See the section EDSA Client Server Manager for more information about this licensing component.

Installation This section describes how to install the EDSA Technical software package. Please read all the sections about installation and EDSA licensing before attempting to install EDSA Technical Before installing EDSA, please exit all programs and turn off any virus detection and screen saver software running on your workstation.

Check List Prior to Installation:

Please have your EDSA License Certificate in front of you. During

installation, you will be asked to type in the serial number exactly as it appears on the EDSA License certificate.

o Important information for International users - Must Read First to

make sure regional settings are set properly.

By default, EDSA Technical is installed with a 14-day demo license. Your license will expire within 14 days unless you contact EDSA for a password that enables the software for the package you are licensed for.

You will have to provide EDSA with your Host ID in order to receive the

required password.

Only one (1) password will be given out per license purchased, so make sure that you are installing EDSA on the workstation you intend to use.

Make sure your screen resolution is set to 1024x768 16-bit color as

minimum.

Make sure you have Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher installed on your PC.

Users must make sure that they have local administrator rights on the

workstation where they are installing EDSA, otherwise EDSA will not install properly.

EDSA Technical 2000 will not coexist with older versions of EDSA software. The EDSA Technical installer will remove previous versions of EDSA from your workstation or upgrade a previous version of EDSA Technical to the new

versions.

EDSA Create Administrator The EDSA Create Administrator utility allows you to create an EDSA administrator account. The role of the EDSA administrator is to maintain EDSA user accounts, and to govern access control to the EDSA database by granting EDSA users certain access rights.

In the event that the EDSA administrator account password is lost or forgotten, the EDSA Create Administrator utility may be run without re-installing EDSA Technical.

The utility can be found on your EDSA Technical CD under the Utilities

folder, called CreateAdmin.exe. The EDSA Create Administrator utility is shown below.

Once you have an administrator account established, you can then use this account to create additional administrators or other user accounts. This feature is used to control access to project drawings and the database. Privileges are assigned by project managers for the project. They are assigned to users who have been created by Administrators. Privileges

Network Installation

License Server Installation By installing a license server, you will be able to "float" licenses to any PC in your network.

DO NOT INSTALL EDSA TECHNICAL AND THE EDSA LICENSE SERVER

ON THE SAME WORKSTATION.

You must physically be at the server you wish to install the license

manager on.

Exit all programs and turn off any virus detection and screen-saver software on your server. This prevents possible conflicts between the EDSA License Server installer and other programs.

Make sure that you have local administrator rights on the workstation or

server where you are installing EDSA License Server, otherwise the installer will not run.

Insert the EDSA Technical CD into your CD-ROM drive. Cancel the

EDSA Technical installer if it starts.

Click Start from the taskbar and select Run. In the Run window, type x:\LicenseServer\setup (where x: is the drive containing the EDSA Technical CD), then click OK.

Once the installer launches, it will check to make sure the version of

Windows Installer on your workstation is up-to-date. For workstations where Windows Installer isn’t installed, the EDSA License Server installer will update the version of Windows Installer and then ask to reboot your

Page 16: EDSA Installation Guide

EDSA Installation Guide

12

workstation. You must reboot your workstation once these changes have been made otherwise the EDSA software will not install.

After the Windows Installer is up to date, you will see the Welcome Screen

as shown. Follow the screen instructions:

Select “Complete” or “Custom” from the Setup Type window . Choosing “Complete” setup (the default selection) will install EDSA License Server under C:\EDSALicenseServer. This requires approximately 3MB free disk space.

Choosing “Custom” allows you to change the install path of EDSA License

Server.

After EDSA License is successfully installed, leave “Configure EDSA License Server” checked to launch the EDSA Server License Manager (covered in a later section entitled EDSA Server License Manager), and press the “Finish” button.

Compaq Teaming

FlexLM is unable to grab the HostID when Compaq Teaming is enabled. Therefore, this is not a valid configuration for EDSA License Server since FlexLM does not support Compaq Teaming.

EDSA Server License Manager The EDSA Server License Manager (SLM) program is installed on your server with the EDSA License Server installation, allowing you to configure the EDSA License Server. The SLM can be launched at the end of the EDSA License Server installation or anytime by choosing the EDSA->EDSA Server License Manager shortcut from your Start Menu->Programs Menu. The EDSA SLM is shown below:

The SLM shows the current EDSA license server configuration. The “Serial Number” field can be modified in the event that the EDSA serial number was entered improperly during the installation. The “Host ID” field is read-only and will be different for each server. The server IP address is automatically filled in based on the server’s current TCP/IP configuration. By default, the EDSA License Server isn’t started until it is properly configured using the SLM. EDSA Technical workstations configured using a floating license will not run until the EDSA License Server is configured and running. Where does the Host ID come from? The Host ID is the last 8 characters of the MAC address of the network card SLM sees. If you have multiple network cards, it is important that the Host ID match

Page 21: EDSA Installation Guide

Installation

17

the network card connected to the EDSA workstations, otherwise the license manager will not function properly. What can I do if SLM is seeing the wrong card? FlexLM looks for the first NIC card in the system when locking to the MAC address. If the first NIC happens to be configured as the backup system, then what you can do is the following: Install license server and see which network card FlexLM picks up by looking at the HOST ID in EDSA server license manager. Match the HOST ID with the last 8 digits of the MAC address to find which NIC it is. If it's the wrong NIC, then swap the IP addresses of the NIC's so that the FlexLM-recognized-NIC is the one serving the users, not the backups.

General installation FAQ Frequently Asked Questions and Answers to them

Error -214722024 Getting Passwords

Corrupt Toolbars MS Explorer Requirements

When I try to run EDSA Technical I get an Error "Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Error -214722024 invalid index specified" how can I fix this?

The error occurs if the software was installed by an Administrator and then a different user logs on and tries to run the application.

Please make sure user has Power User rights on the PC. Next, follow these steps.

Exit EDSA and log on under the end user account name. From the Start button choose Programs>EDSA>Rebuild EDSA Toolbar. EDSA will launch and properly configure its environment for the end user.

Show me how

Why does this occur?

The EDSA User Interface (UI) is defined based on a user profile. The changes to the EDSA UI are 'per user" so if the Administrator has logged on and loaded the software, the toolbars are set for that account. When another user logs on, they now have the above procedure to add the interface buttons for themselves. AutoCAD user 'profiles' act similarly.

My toolbar icons are all blank or appear as a row of Autodesk A icons, how can I fix this?

The error occurs if the software was installed by an Administrator and then a different user logs on and tries to run the application.

Please make sure user has Power User rights on the PC. Next, follow these steps.

Exit EDSA and log on under the end user account name. From the Start button choose Programs>EDSA>Rebuild EDSA Toolbar. EDSA will launch and properly configure its environment for the end user.

Please make sure user has Power User rights on the PC. Next, follow

these steps. Exit EDSA and log on under the end user account name. From the Start button choose Programs>EDSA>Rebuild EDSA Toolbar. EDSA will launch and properly configure its environment for the end user.

Why does EDSA Technical require Microsoft Internet Explorer?

The Help files that accompany Technical use Microsoft Internet Explorer technology and require that this application be installed and running.

Uninstalling EDSA Technical from a Workstation Using the Add/Remove Programs Applet 1. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. 2. Select EDSA Technical from list of programs and click the “Change” button. 3. At the Welcome screen click next go to the Program Maintenance screen. 4. Choose the “Remove” option to remove EDSA Technical completely from your workstation.

Show me how Microsoft Windows Install Cleanup (Windows 2000 and XP Only) If you are having difficulty removing EDSA, or you inadvertently deleted the program files and the add/remove applet is not working, you may use an included utility from Microsoft.

From the EDSA CD, go to the Misc folder and choose the Cleanup Folder. Choose the Win NT folder to access the version of this program for

Windows 2000 You will see a single executable file, double click on this to run the

Windows Install Cleanup Installer. Once installed, from the Start>Programs menu launch the Windows Install

Cleanup program. Select and remove any version of EDSA or Autodesk Actrix. This tool will completely remove any reference to EDSA from the registry.

You can also download this tool from Microsoft web site at: http://download.microsoft.com/download/office2000pro/util20/1/NT4/EN-US/msicuu.exe IMPORTANT: The Msicu.exe and Msicuu.exe (Windows Installer CleanUp) utilities are not supported on computers on which Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is installed, including Microsoft Windows XP.
