The EDSA volunteer working group is dedicated to making a difference where it matters the most. Through volunteer programmes we are broadening the horizons and skill-set of European dental students and giving something back to the millions around the world in need of care.

In August 2012, interns from Manipal University, College of Dental Sciences in collaboration with the European Dental Students Associa-tion and Wisdomtooth( a healthcare foundation based in Washington, USA) conducted an Outreach mission in Ladakh District of Jammu & Kashmir, India. The mission titled Amchi Project was a multinational effort involving 44 doctors, dentists, interns and dental students from 3 continents involving 14 nationalities(United States of America, United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Romania, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and India). The project was conceived one and a half years ago by Dr. Ritesh Bhattacharjee from Manipal University, India and Dr. Mina Tagt Khodabandehloo from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.

Through initiatives such as the Amchi Programme we are committed to making a sustainable difference. We aim to deliver culturally sensitive, region specific healthcare solutions: Initiatives which are self sustainable and rooted in education and training, empowering local healthcare providers to make a positive change for their own society and population.

In an area the size of Great Britain with a population of 180,000 people there are four dentists in one location.Leh is the main town in the area and was the base for the project. To access the outreach locations of Tangtse and Panamik the team had to cross two of the three highest mountain passes in the world. During the long winter months these areas are cut off from the rest of the world. Access to healthcare in this region is extremely poor.

These initiatives are entirely student led and organised, with supervision kindly donated by experienced dentists for the practical aspects of our missions.
