A senior State Department official said the Chinese had warned in sepa-rate conversations of potential damage to US-China military ties if the $5.85 billion F-16 upgrade is not revoked.

“They indicated they are going to suspend, or cancel or postpone a series of... military-to-military engagements,” the official told re-porters on condition of anonymity on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, on Monday.

China’s state news agency Xin-hua said Yang had indicated that Washington “grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs and serious-

ly undermined China’s security.”“China urged the US to attach

great importance to China’s sol-emn position and take it very seri-ously, correct the mistake of selling weapons to Taiwan by revoking the above-mentioned wrong decision, eliminate its negative influence, stop arms sales to Taiwan and US-Taiwan military contact, and take real actions to uphold the larger interest of China-US relations,” it quoted Yang as saying.

During his meeting in New York with Clinton, Yang made “very serious representations” about the

upgrade, the US official said.Yang “indicated that it would harm

the trust and confidence” between the two world powers, but Clinton gave no sign that the United States would reconsider, the official added.

In turn, the top US diplomat spoke of Washington’s firm com-mitment to expanding ties with China, according to Xinhua.

“The US welcomes and sup-ports the peaceful development of relations between China’s mainland and Taiwan, and will continue to be devoted to promoting peace and sta-bility in the Taiwan Straits,” Clinton was quoted as saying.

“The US is willing to properly handle the differences between the two countries and avoid disrupting cooperation between the two sides,” she said.

MANILA, Philippines — Manila residents waded through waist-deep floodwaters, dodging branches and flying debris Tues-day as a powerful typhoon sent surging waves as tall as palm trees crashing over seawalls and sub-merging entire neighborhoods.

At least seven people were killed, most of them in metropoli-tan Manila, which already was soaked by heavy monsoon rains ahead of Typhoon Nesat’s arrival and where the old town areas by the bay suffered their worst flood-ing in decades.

Pounding rains obscured the view of anyone on the streets as soldiers and police scrambled to safely evacuate thousands of people in low lying areas, where rivers and the sea spilled into shanties, hospitals, swanky hotels and even the seaside U.S. Embassy compound, which was closed Tuesday.

“It’s flooded everywhere. We don’t have a place to go for shelter. Even my motorcycle got

filled with water,” said motorist Ray Gonzales, one of thousands stranded by fast-rising floodwa-ters.

The massive flooding came exactly a day after this sprawling, coastal city of 12 million held commemorations for the nearly 500 people killed during a 2009 cyclone, which dumped a month’s rainfall in just 12 hours.

Typhoon Nesat hit ashore before dawn Tuesday in eastern provinces and headed inland just north of Manila with up to an inch of rain per hour, half that of the storm two years ago, said govern-ment forecaster Samuel Duran.

The geography of the archi-pelago makes it a welcome mat for about 20 storms and typhoons forming in the Pacific each year but the latest onslaught still caught many by surprise.

In all, authorities ordered more than 100,000 people across the country to shelter from Typhoon Nesat’s rains, winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and gusts of up to 93 mph (150 kph) — enough to bend street signs.

Two Hong Kong-bound flights carrying more than 600 people narrowly missed each other over the Asian city, according to officials, after pilots scrambled to react to warning signals.

A Cathay Pacific Boeing 777 arriving from New York and a Dragonair Airbus A330 from Tai-wan were both told to hold off landing due to bad weather on September 18 but strayed into each other’s path.

Airline officials said they were one nautical mile (2,000 metres) apart at the same altitude southwest of Hong Kong airport when the traffic collision avoidance system warning sounded.

The Dragonair pilot put his aircraft, carruying 284 passengers and 12 crew, into an immediate climb while the Cathay flight, with 299 passengers and 18 crew on board, descended to resolve the

conflict.According to Hong Kong’s former civil aviation

chief the two planes came within six seconds of impact, based on their distance and normal aircraft speed. “The chance of a crash is absolutely high. The passengers really came back from hell,” Albert Lam told The Standard newspaper.

A spokesman for Cathay Pacific, which also owns Dragonair, said that there had been a “loss of separation” but said: “There was no risk of col-lision and at no time was the safety of the flights compromised.

“At the closest, they were one nautical mile (2,000 meters) apart when abeam from each other with in-creasing vertical separation.” Both flights landed at the airport without incident, 14 minutes apart.

Cathay said the incident has been reported to civil aviation authorities and pledged to cooperate with the probe.

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Po-land are to cooperate more closely in the economic field, including in the joint production of various high-technology goods.

The two countries` plan was formalized in a Letter of Intent signed here by Waryono Karyo, secretary general of Indonesia`s energy and mineral resources min-istry, and Maciej Kaliski, Poland`s deputy economic affairs minister, at a ceremony here Monday.

The ceremony was also at-tended by Indonesian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Darwin Saleh, Polish Ambassador to Indonesia Grzegorz Wisniewski and Indonesian Ambassador to Poland Darmansjah Djumala.

“This letter of intent is a follow up to the Memorandum of Un-derstanding (MoU) the two two countries signed and the bilateral consultations and expert meetings they held in Warsaw in 2009,”

“We arrested them last week after receiving reports that a number of ships had been pirated in waters east of Aceh province,” Aceh police chief Inspector General Iskandar Hasan said here on Monday.

From the suspected pirates who were all Acehnes the police confis-cated an FN gun and its ammunition, two standard hand grenades and ship crew documents as evidence.

He said the police also suspected the mastermind of the piracy was a prisoner in the Tanjung Gusta State Penitentiary in Medan, North Sumatra.

“We are still investigating whether the mastermind of the piracy is in LP Tanjung Gusta in Medan. We are still developing all information we have ,” he said.

He said the suspects had confessed that they had often conducted armed operations against ships passing through the Malacca Strait. They usually take the ship`s crew hostage and then ask for a ransom in exhange for their release,” he said.

In the last incident, he said, the four held hostage six crew of a Singa-pore-flagged ship, the GM Galant.

The tugboat manned by six Indo-nesian nationals was carrying heavy-duty equipment from Singapore to Sabang, Aceh, when it was pirated in East Aceh last week.

“Negotiations were then held be-tween the pirates and the ship owner. During the negotiations we (the po-lice) then joined the negotiating team. Several days later a dialog was held so we were able to locate one of the pirates who was holding the ship`s crew hostage,” he said.

The group was believed to have a big network based on the documents that the police had confiscated from them, he said.

“They have an organizational structure and their operation areas and distribution of ransoms reach Riau Islands,” he said.

JAKARTA - The Chief of Indonesia`s State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Sutanto, said terrorism was now being carried out individually and therefore its handling was not easy.

He made the statement here on Monday before meeting with the House of Representatives` Security Commission I follow-ing a suicide bomber`s attack on a church in Solo, Central Java, Sunday morning.

Sutanto said the police were still investigating and chasing alleged parties involved with regard to ar-resting their network members.

He said the suicide bomber in Solo had already been identified. “He is connected with the suicide bomber in Cirebon (last April),” he said.

Sutanto appealed to the media

not to pressure the BIN to unveil the process of investigation as it is very secret.

Asked on information from a foreign embassy about terrorist attack threats in Solo, Semarang and Jakarta Sutanto said that he he had never heard about it.

“I think the suicide bombing in Solo was a local action and would not affect other regions,” he said. He said conditions in other regions are different.

“Please do not blow it up,” he said.

Sutanto said terrorism did not only happen in Indonesia but also in other countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and oth-ers with their bigger number of victims.

He said terrorism in Indonesia had been handled well as has been proven by the handling of hundred terrorists so far.AFP PHOTO / Bay ISMOYO

“It is natural so long as a cabinet reshuffle is intended to build a better government, and now is the most appropriate moment to carry it out,” Happy Bone said in a discussion on “Polemic:

They Say There Will Be A Reshuffle”, here over the weekend.

The speakers in the discussion included Golkar Party Happy Bone Zulkarnaen, Indo Barometer Director Muhammad Qodari, and Sugeng Sardjadi Syndicate political observer Sukardi Rinakit.

Happy also agreed with presidential spokesman Daniel Sparingga that President Yudhoyono`s plan to reshuffle the cabinet was to improve the style of national leadership in

order to step up performance.Daniel said the president would reshuffle

his cabinet because the head of state wanted the cabinet ministers to change their leadership style, namely accelerate the implementation of all programs at all ministerial level.

“The president wants the ministers to change the style of national leadership by improving their performance,” Daniel said, adding that the President was almost certain to reshuffle the cabinet next month.

Darmansjah Djumala said follow-ing the document`s signing.

The cooperation would include the joint production of such high technolpgy goods as turbines, remote sensing devices, conveyor belts in Indonesia.

“We are also to cooperate in coal mining, energy, port and in-frastructure building and weapon production,” he said,

Ambassador Djumala said Indonesia needs to cooperate with Poland more closely, especially in the economic field because Poland was the only country in Europe en-joying positive economic growth and also possessed sophisticated coal mining technology.

“From Poland`s viewpoint , Indonesia was a potential market for tits products,” he said.

Meanwhile, Indonesia was already exporting many com-modities and products to Poland, such as coffee, tobacco, furniture, textiles, electronic equipment, and chemicals.

But Djumala admitted there were still problems that needed to be overcome to increase the two countries bilateral trade such as the fact that Indonesian products were still being exported to Po-land via third countries, namely Germany and the Netherlands.

“So under the agreement signed today, we will find a way to export our goods to Poland directly,” he said.

Indonesia-Poland trade in 2010 reached a total value of US$485, up 20 percent from the preceding year.

Do you know the longest fruits in Bali? Of course, you will answer the fruits arrangement carried in a parade. It is an amazing spectacle you can encounter on Paradise Island of Bali. Women carry it on their head on the parade in the arts and temple festival. Visitors will keep eyes incessantly on the splendor.

To Balinese community, aside from being used

for consumption, fruits are remarkably important for their ritual life. Virtually all sacrificial oblations require the presence of fruits. Expressing their gratitude in temple anniversary, human life cycle rituals and ceremony for rice in the field entail various fruits as well. Undeniably, they plant the frequently used fruits at their home yard or back yard. Other than for its fruits, it is also taken advantage for shady tree. Some fruits usually planted within the house compound are like guava, sapodilla, papaya, mango, rambutan, pomegranate and so forth.

Considering the high needs of fruits for ritual, the Hindus in Bali organize special ritual intended for the plants in the hope it could bear dense fruits. It is regularly held every 210 days falling on Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Wariga or better known as Tumpek Pengarah or Tumpek Pengatag. This ritual is 25 days before Galungan festivity. It is intended to express gratitude and hope those plants could yield sufficient crops for the celebration of festivities. The plant is treated as an elder so the oblation is filled with rice porridge.

Global market today has a great impact on the penetration of foreign fruits. People can purchase various kinds of imported fruits like pear, apple, kiwi fruit, green grape and so forth at traditional market and even at stalls nearby. In the long run, they have replaced the position of local fruits.

To maintain and preserve the sustainability of local fruits, local government through Department of Agriculture has made several efforts. One of them is by organizing competition of making gebogan (fruits and cakes arrangement) by means of purely local fruits. This measure is by considering the greater fruit demands are absorbed by the need of ritual activities. Another measure is by providing the cutting or hybrid seedlings of some local fruits. By doing so, people can cultivate them at ease. The no less important is implanting awareness that using local fruits for ritual needs is more relevant as they have got ritual pursuant to Hindu tradition in Bali.

A momentous moment to see such local fruits rendezvous is the cultural parade in Bali Arts Festival (mid of June) and other art festivals across the island as well as temple anniversary throughout the year. The latter can be checked on the Balinese calendar. Like an art event, various local fruits like banana, snakefruit, guava, orange, banana, sawo kecik, sapodilla, passion fruit, custard apple, kaliasem, mangosten, pomelo and many others are arranged nicely in combination with cakes and oblation on top. Of course, in most cases they are coming together with imported fruits. (BTN/punia)

EMI had planned to use the same inflatable pig, which had been kept at a workshop since the original shoot, but two weeks ago it was deemed not to be airworthy and a replica was made. The artwork on the Animals album was a combination of a photograph of the background of Battersea Power Station taken on December 2, 1976, and the pig photographed on December 4.

On December 3 that year, the pig slipped its moorings and floated into the Heathrow airport flight path before being recovered by a farmer in Kent, southeast England. Howard Bartrop, a photographer who worked on the 1976 shoot, recalled the difficulties involved.

“It was quite tricky that day and very cold and of course famously after a day or so we had the problem where he (the pig) floated up away from the building and was spot-ted by commercial pilots landing into Heathrow,” he told Reuters. “He then floated off toward Kent, followed by a police helicopter, landed in a farm I believe and frightened

all the cattle.“Basically he was retrieved, patched up and put back

in the air the next day so we could try and photograph him again.” Under the banner “Why Pink Floyd ... ?,” EMI Music is releasing all 14 Pink Floyd studio albums remastered and available digitally. They are also available as one Discovery Box Set.

Also on sale from Monday are special editions of one of the band’s most acclaimed albums, “The Dark Side of The Moon,” extended to feature unreleased music from Pink Floyd archives.

Pink Floyd, behind seminal albums The Dark Side of the Moon, “Wish You Were Here” and “The Wall,” is one of the most successful rock bands of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide. The group, also famous for its acrimonious split and one-off reunion at charity concert Live 8 in 2005, re-signed to long time record label EMI in January in a five-year deal.

The agreement also brought to an end a legal dispute between the sides over EMI’s right to “unbundle” their records and sell individual tracks online.

LOS ANGELES - Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres called paramedics on Monday after feeling pains and tightness in her chest, but jokingly brushed off the in-cident, saying she had a “baboon heart” and admitting she wasn’t sure what caused the discomfort.

“Everything is fine. I don’t know what it is but it’s fine,” DeGeneres told her TV audience, hours after getting checked out. Her remarks were taped on Monday and will be broadcast on Tuesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”.

Rumors over the health of the comedian flew around the Internet on Monday after celebrity website TMZ.com said that paramedics had been called to the studio near Los Angeles where DeGeneres tapes her show after she complained of chest pains. She was not hospitalized.

DeGeneres, 53, one of the most popular stand-up comics and hosts on U.S. television, said she had woken up in the middle of the night.

“I was feeling like a tightness of my chest and all the scary things ... like something was heavy on my chest and it was a cat so I moved it. I still felt the tight-ness and heaviness so there was another cat under that cat. There were two cats on my chest,” she told her studio audience.

“Then I got to work and it was still happening. I was still feeling the pains. So I was like, ‘ya know, I should check this out.’ It’s better to be safe than sorry. Who doesn’t want to see a fireman occasionally?,” she said.

DeGeneres said paramedics bombarded her with questions, and she thanked “all the paramedics and nurses who showed up and everybody and TMZ for caring so much.” “Let me just say I am fine,” she added.

NEW YORK - Jay-Z will be the first musical performer to play at a new basketball arena under construction in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn-born rap star said on Monday. “This is where I’m from, I’ll always be Brooklyn, and opening this arena will mean more to me than anywhere else,” he told a news conference.

Dates and prices were not an-nounced, though Jay-Z said there could be up to three shows. The Barclays Center, under construc-tion since 2009, is due to open in September 2012 and will be the home court of the New Jersey Nets, who will be renamed the Brooklyn Nets, Jay-Z said.

The rapper is a minority owner of the team. Jay-Z, whose wife Beyonce is expecting their first child, released a collaboration album called “Watch the Throne” with fellow rap star Kanye West in August.

On Thursday, the world’s biggest physics lab unveiled a shocking finding: that one type of subatomic particle was clocked going faster than the speed of light. If true — a big if, even the scientists there con-cede — it could undercut Einstein’s theories. Physicist Michio Kaku of City College of New York called it “the biggest challenge to relativity in 100 years.”

Antonio Ereditato, who partici-pated in the European experiment as head of the Albert Einstein Center for Fundamental Physics in Bern, knows what is at stake. After his team fielded two hours of technical questions, some a bit sharp, from a skeptical audience Friday, Ereditato

had a beer in hand and was asked about the idea that his work was challenging the secular saint of modern physics.

“Yes, that’s why I’m concerned,” he said with a laugh. There’s a long history of experimental results that at first seem to contradict relativity, only later to be found to fit neatly with the theory Albert Einstein loved for its simplicity and elegance.

“It’s dangerous to lay odds against Einstein,” said Rob Plun-kett, a physicist at the Fermilab near Chicago who has tried similar speed-of-light experiments and will now try to test the new findings.

Even Einstein himself was wrong in 1929 when he called his cosmo-

logical constant his “biggest blun-der.” He introduced the constant in his general relativity theory as a force that keeps the universe from collapsing. In 1998, new findings showed that the universe is acceler-ating and that in general Einstein’s “blunder” wasn’t a mistake.

Harvard University science his-torian Peter Galison said Einstein’s relativity theories have been chal-lenged and “pushed on as hard as any theory in the history of physi-cal sciences ever” and they have survived.

The elegance of Einstein’s theory and its proven track record are why nearly every one of the more than a dozen physicists contacted by The Associated Press about the new findings has been cautious, skepti-cal or downright disbelieving. The research is the result of a collabo-ration between France’s National Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics Research and Italy’s Gran Sasso National Laboratory.

Forty-two percent of US doctors believe that their patients are getting too much medical care, according to a survey published Monday which suggests fears of malpractice suits may be to blame. A total of 28 percent said they felt they were treating their patients too aggressively, while 45 percent said one of every 10 patients they saw daily had issues that could have been dealt with by phone, by email or by a nurse.

Fifty-two percent said they felt their patients were receiving just the right amount of care and six percent said their patients were receiving too little, said the study in the Journal of the

American Medical Association.“Our findings show that many primary care

physicians believe there is substantial unnec-essary care that could be reduced, particularly by increasing time with patients, reforming the malpractice system, and reducing financial incentives to do more,” it said.

The United States has the world’s highest health spending per capita among developed nations, at $5,475 compared to the next-highest country, Switzerland at $3,581, according to a separate US study published in 2007 in the journal Health Affairs.

Health care in the United States is a hot politi-cal issue, and President Barack Obama’s moves

to reform the system and extend insurance coverage to an extra 32 million people has faced opposition from Repub-licans and sparked court challenges.

Seventy-six percent of survey respondents said that concerns about possible mal-practice suits were the main reason why they gave patients more ag-gressive treatment.

“Physicians believe they are paid to do more and exposed to legal punishment if they do less,” said the article.

IF you’ve been thinking of trying out a new social network, you’re not alone. Google Plus traffic has seen a sharp rise in traffic over the past week according to new data from Experian Hitwise.

Last week, right before the F8 confer-ence, Google Plus was made open to the public and introduced a number of new features including stuff for Hangouts, Google Docs and some added search functions. Since then, Google’s star so-cial networking service has seen a traffic surge of 1269 percent, with U.S. visits at 15 million—significantly trumping the paltry 1.1 million U.S. visits from the preceding week.

That data doesn’t even take into ac-count mobile users, or those that wander over to Plus using the black bar. It’s not exactly clear what caused the spike, though its possible to draw a correlation from the the drop of the invite feature or criticism over Facebook changes. What-ever the reason, Plus doesn’t seem to be

going the way of Orkut anytime soon.Currently, Hitwise is ranking Plus at

number 8 in the Social Networking and Forums category, just behind MySpace and way up from its former spot at 54. ReadWriteWeb also points out that Paul Allen’s estimates have the Google Plus user count now at 43 million.

Further chipping at the rivalry with Facebook, CityVille, Zynga’s most popular game on Facebook has recently come to Google’s social networking site. Cityville currently has 72 million users.

Google also rolled out an interesting change for one of Plus’ main features, Circles. Similar to Twitter lists, now Google Plus users will be able to share separate circles of friends with others. A share link will pop on the Google+ Circles page, which will allow you to share with your friends. The new feature doesn’t allow others to see the title of the circle or if the circle creator updates members.

Stoner said however that he would continue to attack and would be looking for the win rather than championship points - particularly given his excellent form at Motegi last year, when he won for Ducati.

“As in Aragon, we will be going out there trying to win and not only looking for valuable Championship points,” Stoner insisted. “We had a fantastic race here last year, probably one of my best in my opinion and it will be fun to go there on the Honda and see how the bike works around the circuit.

“Motegi is quite a different circuit, a little like a go kart track, but in general it’s nice and more fun than some of the other circuits we visit. It has a lot of hard braking, a lot of hard accelerating, it’s pretty tough on the body and physically demanding.

“If you miss your braking points it’s easy to run wide so it will be important to get the set up on the bike just right.”

While Lorenzo will be hoping to disrupt Stoner’s win-ning ambitions, the Australian could also find himself challenged from within the official Honda team. Andrea Dovizioso took his first and to date only MotoGP pole at the circuit last year, while Dani Pedrosa arrives in Japan on the back of three consecutive second places.

“We go to Japan focused on return-ing to the podium, this has to be our target,” Dovizioso said. “We will arrive at the Japanese GP this year in the same position we were last year - straight from a crash and zero points, but I’m determined to trans-form this disappointment with extra motivation.

“Last season we had a great race and we almost won, so I’m confident to repeat a great performance at Motegi, a circuit that I like and where I have been on the podium in all the three classes.”

Pedrosa, who broke his collarbone in Friday practice at Motegi last year, said: “Obviously, last year I had a hard time there due to my injury, but I want to focus on my riding and enjoy the GP.

“We’ve been at a good level, with three second places in a row and I am looking forward to this race. I have won at this track in 125 and 250, but not yet in MotoGP, so that’s a big motivation for me.”

McLaren is still holding out hope that it can delay Red Bull Racing’s world cham-pionship party celebrations even longer, as Sebastian Vettel targets clinching his world championship title in Japan. Vettel’s triumph in the Singapore Grand Prix was not enough to secure him the crown, thanks to Jenson Button’s second place finish.

And although it is highly unlikely that Button will win every remaining race, with Vettel outside of the points, as is required for Button to win the champi-onship, McLaren team principal Martin

Whitmarsh says he will take satisfaction in simply delaying Red Bull Racing’s crowning moment.

“I think it is a tough one,” he said after the Singapore Grand Prix. “But it is math-ematically possible. “Adrian [Newey], Red Bull and Sebastian are doing a fantastic job, but in a way I am a little bit happy they are not having a party here in Singapore. I am happy for the fans and everything else, and we will keep fighting on.

“Who knows? It would be nice if they could not have that party in Japan,

but they are looking pretty strong.” Whitmarsh has said his team will keep pushing to improve its car over the remainder of the campaign, and he believes it should be well suited to the Suzuka track.

“I think they [Red Bull Racing] will be strong, but we will be working hard,” he said. “We will continue to develop the car and we will try and be as strong as we can there. “We know the weather can play a part there, it can be fairly torrid. All sorts of things can happen, but we will try and be as quick as we can and we will try and win that race.”

Whitmarsh also said that his team does not take any heart from the fact it is the only one that can still beat Vettel to the crown.

“At the moment you have to say Se-bastian and Red Bull are doing a fantastic job,” he said. “They are the ones you have to beat. Jenson is now in second place in the championship and deserv-edly so, but we can do all the self analysis we like - what we have to do is make the quickest racing car we can, not make any mistakes, perform as well as we can, and we can win some races.

“We have won four this year, some fantastic ones, and we would quite like to win some more. And there are five more that are possible to win.”
