Mangupura (Bali Post)—The geo-strategic position of

Mangupura as the capital of Ba-dung is predicted to become amagnet of new economic growthand population concentration, although currently the ‘face’ ofMangupura City is not visible. Onthat account, Mangupura should becarefully prepared from the begin-ning so as not to develop sporadi-cally and partially as happened toother cities.

Regent of Badung, AA GdeAgung, said the burden and func-tion of Mangupura City wereserving as the capital of Sarbagitaurban areas as well as the na-tional strategic area as set forth inthe Presidential Regulation No.45/2011 concerning with UrbanSpatial Plan of Denpasar, Badung,Gianyar and Tabanan (Sarbagita).Upon approval of the Ministry ofPublic Works, Mangupura Cityalso served as the regency civiccenter, regional health center, re-

gional land transport node, centerfor small and medium industries(SMI), central infrastructure ofsport, and center for cultural heri-tage preservation.

Therefore, Gde Agung statedthe planning documents, legalinstrument, policy and directionof Mangupura City developmentshould be prepared carefully andadaptive to the strategic roles interms of the provincial, regionaland national interests by puttingforward the principles of sustain-able development. Sustainabledevelopment principles should beapplied starting from the arrange-ment of roads, drainage, sidewalks, parks and basic residential facili-ties and infrastructure.

design and master plan studies ofthe RTRK for Mangupura Cityinfrastructure had been completed.

Government was now planning toprioritize the nine villages includ-ing in the Mangupura City area.Atearly stage, Badung Regency hadalso made arrangements especiallyrelated to the border of Denpasarwith Mangupura from the south.“In 2012, the arrangement willbe resumed until the border withDenpasar,” he said last week.

His party also wanted in orderthe Mangupura City would func-tion as a regency capital. He saidthat community activities espe-

result in the burden in the form-

tural use. Therefore, the BadungRegency arranged the urban plan-ning documents up to 20 years tocome so the development couldactually be planned and measured. For short term, especially in 2012becoming the year of infrastructurefor Badung, the infrastructure ofMangupura City would become apriority. She said the increase washigher than the growth of worldtourism in 2011 by 4.5 percent.Based on that number, the foreignexchange earnings of tourismsector in 2011 were estimatedto reach USD 8.5 billion, grow-ing by 11.8 percent compared toachievement in 2010 amountingto USD 7.6 billion.

She added that with such ac-quisition of foreign exchange thetourism sector became the fifthlargest contributor to the nationaleconomy. “The increase of for-eign exchange earnings this yearis in keeping with the increase inexpenditure of foreign touristsfrom USD 1,085.75 in 2010 toUSD1,118.26 per person per visitthis year,” she said.

The increase in tourism expen-ditures, she added, also occurredin domestic tourists. Her party

recorded the average expenditureof domestic tourists was IDR641,760 and increased to IDR662,680 per person per trip in2011. “In the third quarter ofthis year, the expenditure estima-tion of domestic tourists reachesIDR 114.64 trillion generated by172.994 million trips compared toachievement in 2010 amounting toIDR 150.41 trillion,” she said.

According to her, the achieve-ment of 2011 should become amilestone to prepare ourselvesin facing the challenging year of2012. “Despite the bright pros-pect of tourism in 2012, we stillhave to anticipate the possibilityof weakening global economy,”she said.

Her party would cooperatewith all the stakeholders so thetarget could be achieved in 2012.With the target of eight million

foreign tourist visits to Indone-sia in 2012, her party expectedto generate USD 8.96 billionof foreign exchange, while thetarget of domestic tourists was171.5 billion.

She was optimistic if the targetcould be achieved because thetourism sector was consideredrelatively resistant to crisis. “Dur-ing the global economic crisis in2009, our tourism sector continuedto grow despite small. This showstourism is resilient to crises andcan be a seat belt for the nationaleconomy,” she added.

At the end of 2010, her partyhad set three targets for foreigntourists visit in 2011, namelythe pessimistic target by 7.2million tourists, moderate tar-get by 7.5 million tourists andoptimistic target by 7.7 milliontourists. (010)

would sternly respond to any North Korean provocation. In 2010, 50 South Koreans died in attacks blamed on the North, though the Koreas have met in recent months for preliminary nuclear discus-sions.

North Korea, which has tested two atomic devices since 2006, has said it wants to return to long-stalled six-nation talks on halting its nuclear weapons program in return for aid. Washington and Seoul,

however, have insisted that the North first show progress on past disarmament commitments.

If North Korea halts its continu-ing nuclear activities, Lee said in his speech, negotiations could resume.

“We are ready to resolve security concerns on the Korean peninsula and provide assistance to revive North Korea’s economy through agreements in the six-nation talks,” Lee said.

North Korea, however, has so far taken a hard line toward the South. It warned last week that there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea’s government after Kim Jong Il’s death. North Korea’s powerful National Defense Commission said the country would never deal with Lee.

TEHRAN - Iran said on Monday it had successfully test-fired two long-range mis-siles during a naval exercise in the Gulf, flexing its military muscle to show it could hit Is-rael and U.S. bases in the region if attacked.

In response to mounting West-ern pressure over its nuclear am-bitions, Iran started a naval drill in the Gulf last week and warned that it could shut the Strait of Hor-muz if sanctions were imposed on its oil exports, the country’s main revenue source.

The 10 days of naval war-games and the warning over the Strait, a narrow Gulf shipping lane through which 40 percent of world oil passes, have rattled oil markets and pushed up crude

prices.Analysts say Iran’s increas-

ingly strident rhetoric is aimed at sending a message to the West that it should think twice about the economic cost of putting further pressure on Tehran. “We have successfully test-fired long-range shore-to-sea and surface-to-surface missiles, called Qader (capable) and Nour (Light) to-day,” Deputy Navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi told state television.

Tehran denies Western accu-sations that it is trying to build atomic bombs, saying it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve the Islamic state’s nuclear row with the West.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Facing colossal odds in the Republican nomination race, presidential can-didate Michele Bachmann cast her struggle in Biblical terms on Sunday in a late attempt to win over conservative voters.

Bachmann spoke from the pulpit of a small church in rural Iowa, tell-ing the congregation about a small group of Israelites who emerged victorious from a battle in which they were outmatched in numbers and weaponry.

“I admonish you, don’t for one moment think that your adversity is one that cannot be scaled,” said Bachmann, who has been beset by a

series of setbacks, most recently her sixth-place finish in an influential poll on Saturday.

Several “Amens” rang out in the Jubilee Family Church when congresswoman Bachmann said the Israelites’ victory was due to their faith in God, who smote their foes.

The Iowa-born Bachmann, 55, was once a leading light for evan-gelical voters in Iowa, which on Tuesday holds the nation’s first voting contest to pick a candidate to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012.

She shot to the top of polls of Republicans in August after win-ning the Ames straw poll in the state but is now fast losing support from conservatives to former Pennsylva-

nia Senator Rick Santorum. After the church service, Bach-

mann, fresh off of a 99-county, 7,000-mile tour of Iowa, said the only endorsement she is after is that of people of Iowa.

“That’s why we saw literally thousands of people in cafes and homes all across Iowa make a de-cision on the spot that they will be supporting me ... because they want someone who they can trust. I am a real, authentic Iowan.”

“She has my vote, now,” said Tony Hol, a 46-year-old farmer who lives near Oskaloosa. “I’ve listened to other candidates and listened to her. She doesn’t change her story with different audiences. And that is very important to me,” said Hol.

SAMPANG - Sampang police have named three people as the main suspects over last Thursday`s (Dec 29) torching of a number of Shiite community buildings, and arrested one of them.

“The name of the suspect we have been able to arrest is Musrikan, We took him in last night,” Senior Commissioner Rahmat Mulyana, public relations officer of the East Java Police Headquarters, told the press at the Sampang district police office here Saturday.

A Sunni crowd on Thursday rampaged through Sampang district`s Karang Gayam village and set fire to the house of the Shiite community leader, a Shiite prayer house and school building.

The two other main suspects - Muhlis and

Sawir, were still at large and had been put on the police`s list of wanted persons, Rahmat said.

The police determined the suspects after conducting an investigation into the incident and questioning 15 out of 21 people they had planned to interview.

“The suspects, if proven quilty, face a maximum jail sentence of five years under articles 170 and 178 of the Criminal Code,” Rahmat said.

The mob action in Karang Gayam village forced 270 out of the 351 Shiite residents of the village to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. They were eventually given shelter at the Wijata Kusuma sports stadium located near the Sampang district chief`s office.

Relations between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in Sampang have been marked by mutual intol-erance since 2006 and last Thursday`s riot was triggered by a proselytizing dispute.

The workers hope to resolve the dispute and start heading back to the Grasberg mine in the central highlands of Papua island, eastern Indonesia, Tuesday, said

union spokesman Virgo Solossa by telephone.

“It’s likely that we will be back to work tomorrow as around 500 workers from several sub-

contractor companies still have issues that need to be settled first. Today we want to make sure that all contractors have no issues,” Solossa said.

The strike at the world’s second-largest copper mine shook labor relations in Southeast Asia’s larg-est economy because it was a high-profile attempt by workers to gain a larger share of the rewards in a booming economy.

The strike ended on Decem-ber 14 with a deal under which Freeport agreed to a pay increase of roughly 40 percent for around 8,000 union members and to a framework for a better deal for roughly 15,000 other non-union workers and contractors.

Arizona-based Freeport earlier said it expected full operations at the Grasberg mine to resume in early 2012.

The union has not returned to work largely because of a dispute with contractor PT Kuala Pelabu-han Indonesia (KPI) over possible sanctions on workers who took part in the strike. Last week KPI agreed to rehire about 700 workers who went on strike with no sanctions, the union said.

Monday’s dispute appeared to be similar to the union’s with KPI.

JIDDA - Jamilah binti Abidin Rofi`i who was to be sentenced to death for murder had been repatriated to Indo-nesia on Dec. 28, 2011, after obtaining a pardon from the victim`s family, the Indonesian Embassy here said.

The embassy in its press statement received by Antaranews here on Sun-day said that Jamilah was sentenced to death by the Saudi authorities after she murdered her employer, Salim Al-Ruqi, in 2007.

Jamilah who hailed from Cianjur, West Java, worked as an illegal domestic helper with a family of Salim Al Ruqi in Mecca after she left her first employer.

She was detained by the Saudi au-thorities on charges of murdering her employer, found guilty and sentenced to death by the Mecca high court on March 19, 2009 which was upheld by the Su-preme Court of the Saudi Kingdom.

After several endeavors by the Indo-nesian consulate general in Jidda, the victim`s family gave Jamilah a pardon in May 2011. With the pardon, Jamilah was freed from the threat of execution.

After completing all the require-ments and processes in accordance with the regulations in force in the Saudi Kingdom, Jamilah was then moved from a Mecca jail to a Jidda prison, where preparations were made for her deportation.

According to Sastrawan, there are several investors that wanted

Mayadanawa: Feeling Superiority Results in Destructionkingdom in Bali was once ruledby Mayadanawa. He was verypowerful and proud of his powerand feels to have more sovereignpower than that of gods.

This arrogance until forbids allsubjects to worship God togetherwith the celebration to glorify allGod’s manifestations. The non-existence of freedom to worshipand other religious activitiescaused many subjects greatly suf-fered where diseases spread andharvests failed. Seeing this con-dition, Lord Mahadeva in heavenfeels disappointed. Having orga-nized an assembly session with

other gods, it is decided to attackMayadanawa. Under the leader-ship of Lord Indra, the target canbe timely destroyed. In short, thetroops of the gods won the battle. This does not only stand for thetriumph of the gods, but also ofthe whole mankind on earth.

Afterwards, Galungan thencan be re-celebrated after thetriumph of Indra. Many subjectsfelt to regain their enlightenmentas they were able to practice theirreligious life. This festivity lastsfor ten days and ends in the daycalled Kuningan. Aside frompaying homage at village temple,it is also intended to appreciatethe ancestors at family shrine.Similarly, devotees thank for theprosperity bestowed and maintainthe relationship with their ances-tors. Though they have left forthe beyond, hopefully they couldilluminate their descendants.

Another version about Galun-gan is mentioned by the manuscriptJaya Kasunu. It is said that the kingJaya Kasunu (AD 1204), medi-tated (held dewa sraya) to invokeguidance. His problem was thatnot one of his predecessors couldrule longer. Through his solemnmeditation he was inspired that heshould re-organize religious activi-ties, such as Galungan.

No matter what the version is,the essence of these mythologiesimplies that a devotee or creationshould maintain their persistentcontact to his Creator. The tmandwelling within the human selfshould maintain his contact to

Brahman, the Creator. By doingso, humans can continuouslyobtain the illumination to walkin the path of dharma.

As manifestation of gratitude, devotees express it through wor-

and so forth. Everything that hasgiven prosperity is also offeredan oblation, including the meansof transportation. If you happento take an excursion on that dayyou of course will rub up againstmany cars affixed with youngcoconut paraphernalia.

Hopefully, the festivity doesnot come to an end at the vibrant

-lation, assorted delicious food orluxurious paraphernalia. All the

times it should help the spiritualdevelopment. Anything achievedin this life either tangible or in-tangible entities, should not makeus arrogant. Sometimes, whenhaving abundance of wealth orhigher educational background,a human feels superior or morepowerful than others. Even, it isnot employed as a milestone toimprove his devotion to God. It’shere where the achievement dragshuman to sluggish condition orgorge of destruction. Like Maya-danawa, he forgot that there is avast sky above him. His power hasled him to his dissolution. If we donot want to become the next Maya-danawa, consistent devotion mustbe established. ( TN punia)

Wajik(Rice Flour Cake with Palm Sugar)

Overview:There are a couple of variations on this popular cake,

which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked.

Ingredients:1 cup glutinous white rice1 cup water1 pandan leaf½ cup palm sugar syrup¼ cup thick coconut milkPinch of salt

Preparation:Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes

and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated.

Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve.

Helpful hint:to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water

over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. If you are using a steamer to cook the rice, line the bottom with a wet cloth to prevent the rice grains from falling through. (www.baliguide.com/balifood)

Probably, you have watched orare going to watch arja operettaor Ramayana Ballet during thevisit in Bali. It would be moreconvenient if it is enjoyed whilehaving dinner of Balinese cuisine. At the same time, you watch thebeauty of culture and taste thedelicacy of local culinary. Youmay hear the language spokenby players or puppeteer was notunderstandable. Of course, it isBalinese language.

As Japanese and Chinese, Ba-linese language also has its owncharacters. They consist of some18 main characters and 10 vowelsounds. Ordinarily, Balinese char-acters are used to write palm-leafmanuscript or lontar. Such char-acters are incised with sharp knifeor stylus. When the writing workshave completed, they should berubbed with a blend of oil and lampshoot to blacken them. So they arevisible easily. Since the works wereperformed manually, the copying ofa manuscript took a long time.

At a glance, Balinese char-acters look like Old Javanese,Tamil (India). It is inseparablefrom historical aspect where theyhad similarity of genealogicallines. Today, Balinese charactersstill have restricted use, namelyat school for local subject fromelementary school to senior highschool. It is becoming the re-

sponsibility of local governmentto preserve and develop Balineselanguage in order it could survivein the midst of the growth of otherlanguages like Bahasa Indonesiaand foreign languages.

Balinese language poses amedium and spirit of Balineseculture. To preserve Balinese cul-ture should also simultaneouslymaintain and use of Balinese lan-guage in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language alsocharacterizes one of the identi-ties as a Balinese. Among theuse of other languages, Balineselanguage should remain to give aspace to grow and develop. Otherthan speaking and teaching it atschools, it should also accom-modate the need of modern com-munity or use in wider functionsof language.

Balinese community receivesabundant heritages of lontaror palm-leaf manuscripts fromthe predecessors retained byindividuals and museums. Theycarry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, localhealing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, as-trology and so forth. Therefore,if they could be interpreted andpresented in popular language, they could become attractive in-formation for young generationand saleable books for commer-

cial needs. Today, there is alsoa trend of poising the traditionwith modern science namely byre-interpreting the indigenouswisdoms that are relevant to thecurrent time. People will get bal-anced inputs from the past andcurrent orientation.

Of course, such treasures willbe beneficial for the conserva-tion and future development ofBalinese culture because it staysin touch with its original roots.Young generation should be in-troduced to these roots at earlystage. Later, they will not losetheir identity and even could feelproud of it. Moreover, it couldgive them inspiration in makingtheir creativities, either in finearts, performance, traditional ar-chitecture or herbal healings.

Thanks to modern technology, the writing of Balinese charactersnow can be made easy by BaliSimbar font. It is the innova-tive thinking of I Made Suatjana(1986) lies behind the composingof this font. His work has helpedthe writing of Balinese charactersin word processing application likeMicrosoft Word. Hopefully, therewould be more creative softwarehelping the development and learn-ing of Balinese language so it wouldnot come into extinction or be farleft behind with the modern life.( TN punia)

Over its 10-week run, Jackman earned a whopping $14,638,428, producers said. He now owns 10 of the 11 top grossing weeks at the Broadhurst.

Jackman, best known for being the hairy Wolverine in “The X-Men” franchise, routinely sold out the 1,176-seat theater and usually posted weekly grosses of $1.5 million, often higher than rival musicals such as “Jersey Boys,” ‘’Mama Mia!” ‘’How to Succeed in Business,” ‘’Anything Goes” and “Follies.”

Only “Wicked” and “The Lion King,” produced by other organiza-tions, consistently outdid Jackman. But those shows also had much higher overhead costs.

The previous record at the Broad-hurst was held by the Al Pacino-led “The Merchant of Venice,” which took in $1,175,750 earlier this year. Until now, the Shubert Organization’s one-week biggest haul was “Billy El-liot,” which earned $1,663,895 during an eight-show stretch last year.

During the run, Jackman raised

a record $1,789,580 for the charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The run “not only confirms him as one of the most bankable stars in Broadway’s history but also as a fund-raiser,” producer Robert Fox said.

Backed by an 18-piece orchestra and six leggy dancers, a charming Jackman belted out about two dozen musical theater songs in “Hugh Jack-man, Back on Broadway.” It was his third time on the Great White Way, following “The Boy From Oz” in 2003 and the play “A Steady Rain” with Daniel Craig in 2009.

The show featured his interpreta-tions of songs ranging from the sexy R&B tune “Fever” to “Rock Island,” from “The Music Man” to a medley of classic movie songs such as “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Luck Be a Lady.” The average ticket went for $160, with top premiums going for $350.

LOS ANGELES — Tom Cruise’s new mission remains impos-sible to beat at the box office. Studio estimates Sunday placed “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” in the No. 1 spot for the second-straight weekend with $31.3 million. With a $134.1 million domestic total, it’s the first $100 million hit with Cruise in the lead role since 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III.”

The Paramount release led a solid New Year’s weekend as Hol-lywood managed fair business to end a sluggish year on a more promising note for 2012. Domestic revenues closed out at $10.22 billion for 2011, down 3.4 percent from 2010’s, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

That was a slight improvement over Hollywood.com’s projections a week earlier, when Hollywood was limping through the normally busy holiday season with a lineup of underachieving movies.

“This week was a pleasant surprise,” said Hollywood.com ana-lyst Paul Dergarabedian. “Last week, we were really pretty gloom and doom, but this final push at the end of the year was stronger than expected. It’s a good way to head into 2012, with at least a little bit of momentum at the box office.”

Still, movie admissions were down sharply for the second year in a row. Factoring in higher ticket prices, domestic attendance slipped to 1.28 billion in 2011, off 4.2 percent from 2010 admissions and the smallest audiences Hollywood has had since 1995, according to Hollywood.com.

Hollywood started the year in a deep rut, with domestic revenues trailing 2010’s by 20 percent or more as a weak first quarter fell far short of the previous year’s spectacular results for the sci-fi sensation “Avatar.”

Studios nearly dug them-selves out from that deficit over the summer, but busi-ness lagged through the fall and holidays as audiences had a ho-hum response to most movies.

Some studio executives had predicted record rev-enues for 2011. The movies themselves may simply have held less appeal to fans than expected, though audiences also could be skipping trips to theaters to watch movies on big-screen home setups or to play with the countless enter-tainment gadgets now on the market. Viewers can watch films at home or on portable devices for a fraction of the cost of going to theaters.

LOS ANGELES - Soul singer Etta James, who is terminally ill with leukemia, has been taken off a respirator and is breathing on her own again, her friend and manager said. Lupe De Leon said the “At Last” singer, 73, is soon expected to leave the intensive care unit of a hospital near her home in Riverside, east of Los Angeles.

“The hospital is preparing Etta

for release from ICU to a step down unit. She is stable and breathing on her own. Her blood pressure is normal,” De Leon said.

James was admitted to the hos-pital last week because she was struggling to breathe. She has been in failing health for several years and suffers from leukemia, kidney disease and dementia but had previ-ously been cared for at her Southern California home.

Her live-in doctor said earlier

in December that James was con-sidered terminally ill, and that she communicates mostly with nods and simple words. The three-time Grammy Award singer earlier battled obesity and was addicted to heroin for many years.

James was a key figure in the early days of R&B music with hit songs like “The Wallflower” and “Good Rockin’ Daddy”. But it was her 1961 recording of the ballad “At Last” that put her on the map.

“This therapy is not so boring, not so pain-ful as physical therapy, because the machine is assisting me to move my arm up and down and laterally,” he said after a recent hour-long session with the “Armeo” robotic arm. A therapist had to tell Soon to slow down as the former civil servant enthusiastically used his left hand, partly supported by the robotic arm, to catch virtual water droplets with a teacup on a colour monitor.

The machine is among the high-tech ex-ercise stations now being used at the Centre for Advanced Rehabilitation Therapeutics (CART), described by its administrators as the most advanced facility of its kind in Asia. Medical authorities are deploying the latest technology as fast-greying Singapore prepares for a “silver tsunami” of elderly people as a re-sult of longer life spans and low birth rates.

In two decades, an estimated 20 percent of the population will be 65 years or older, compared to 9.3 percent at present. To bet-ter prepare themselves for the demographic explosion, hospitals in the affluent city-state of five million people are using the latest available technology to augment its limited pool of health personnel.

Chan Kay Fei, head of Rehabilitation Med-

icine at the government-run Tan Tock Seng Hospital, which houses CART, said therapists on their own “cannot meet this rising need of the ageing population”. “So technology, I feel, could be the multiplier,” Chan said, adding that both therapists and patients benefit from the increasing use of robotic equipment and videogame-inspired software.

“Robotics reduce or eliminate physi-cal loading upon our therapists. It creates an interesting and interactive environment which offers consistency and objectivity to the treatment programme,” he said. Using the machines, therapists are able to precisely monitor the patient’s progress and calibrate the machines accordingly.

The “Lokomat” gait trainer shows a movie-like avatar, controlled by the patient’s movements, walking around a virtual world collecting medals. Such machines are particu-larly suited for countries with rapidly ageing populations, said Bala Rajaratnam, a lecturer at the School of Health Sciences at Nanyang Polytechnic.

“It allows therapists to use smart technol-ogy to both empower clients to take control over their recovery as well as maximise therapy time,” he said.

CONSUMER electronics company LG Electronics will show off the world’s largest OLED TV at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The 55” OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TV has an amazingly thin 4mm profile, a barely-there bezel and weighs just 7.5kg.

It also sports the company’s 4-Color Pixels and Color Refiner features which help to produce natural and accurate colors (in red, green blue and white). LG com-ments that these features provide a superior viewing experience compared to the RGB (red, green and blue) setup used by other manufacturers.

“Working closely with LG Display, we have a product which not only delivers on all the advantages of OLED over LCD but at a significantly lower cost than what could be achieved using existing OLED manufacturing

technologies,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertain-ment Company. “OLED is clearly the future of home TV entertainment and LG is very focused on making this exciting technology as easy as possible for consumers to embrace.”

The 55” OLED TV -- which is rumored to be landing in stores in Q4, 2012 -- will be shown at CES alongside LG’s massive Ultra Definition (aka “4K”) 3840 x 2160 pixels 84-inch 3D TV. The huge TV will also come equipped with voice recognition.

Rival TV maker Samsung has released a video teaser that hints at its CES TV lineup. The video implies that Samsung will be showcasing TVs with bigger displays, seam-less sharing from mobile devices, and Smart TV technology. More information about pricing and release dates will be announced during CES which runs January 10-13.

NEW YORK - Along with mother’s cook-ing and the family dog, regular exercise is too often among the childish things young adults leave behind when they make the move from home to college. Attention should be paid to this drop off, experts say, because those inactive in youth tend to remain inactive over their lifetime.

“The transition from late adolescence to early adulthood represents the most dramatic declines in physical activity across a person’s life,” according to Dr. Matthew Kwan, a re-searcher at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Kwan said campaigns tend to focus on increasing activity in adults.

“That’s important, but it’s when declines have already occurred,” he said. “This is a critical period where we can actually inter-vene.”

In a recent study that followed 683 Cana-dian adolescents from 12 to 15 years old for 12 years, researchers headed by Kwan found a 24 percent decrease in physical activity from adolescence to early adulthood.

The research, which appeared in the Ameri-can Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed declines were steepest among young men entering university or college. Kwan said it might be a consequence of the big drop off in organized sports activity after high school.

“Team sports, varsity activities tend to decrease or drop off entirely,” he explained. “For those who go to college, studies be-come more important. Then there’s the social aspect that eats up their disposable time as well.” Women, already less active in high school, showed only a modest decline in physical activity. “It may be that girls experience the greatest declines earlier in adolescence,” Kwan said.

Six months ago, Singaporean retiree Soon Eng Sam, 70, suffered a stroke that pa-ralysed the left side of his body. Bedridden for three months, he has regained some limb functions on the affected side through conventional physical therapy but now hopes to hasten his recovery with the help of new gadgets designed to make rehabilitation fun.

Instead, they too were shockedas Ji Dong-won slotted home inthe third minute of stoppage timeto snatch the three points for thehosts after a frantic finale whenCity had desperately chased awinner of their own. Televisionreplays showed the South Koreanwas offside when Stephane Ses-segnon played the ball to him butit was not flagged and he coollyrounded keeper Joe Hart withonly 10 seconds to go.

“A team like us can’t concedea goal on the counter-attack at theend,” Mancini told Sky Sports af-ter his side’s second league defeatof the season. “It was offside andwe can’t do anything about it.”

The result left City on 45points from 19 games, ahead ofsecond-placed United on goaldifference and six points in frontof third-placed Spurs who haveplayed one game fewer.

The visitors made six changesfrom the side that drew 0-0 atWest Bromwich Albion on Dec.26, Mancini having an eye onTuesday’s match at home toLiverpool, and lacked a cutting

edge in the first half as an over-crowded midfield stifled bothteams. City’s best chance cameshortly before halftime whenEdin Dzeko skimmed the topof the bar. Earlier, Sunderlandsaw Hart rush forward to forceNicklas Bendtner wide when theforward was through on goal.

CREATIVE SPARKAfter a frustrating opening

period, Mancini sought to intro-duce a creative spark by bringingforward Sergio Aguero on for de-fensive midfielder Nigel de Jongfor the second half. That changeand the swap of playmaker DavidSilva for Samir Nasri 10 minuteslater made City sharper goingforward as they racked up severalattempts on goal but Sunderlandcontinued to thwart the high-flying visitors.

Sunderland should have scoredmidway through the second halfwhen Sessegnon got the better ofCity captain Vincent Kompanyon the edge of the box beforesending his shot narrowly wideof the far post. With the clock

ticking down, City threw playersforward and could have snatchedit when Silva’s shot was pushedby keeper Simon Mignolet intothe path of Micah Richards whoseheader bounced on to the barbefore being cleared.

Somehow Sunderland, whowere depleted due to illnessand injuries, kept the leaders atbay before embarking on a last-gasp counter-attack. Sessegnon’sthrough pass found substitute Jiwho kept his nerve to slot the ballinto an empty net with the lastkick of the game.

The win lifted Sunderland to13th place as their revival sinceMartin O’Neill took over asmanager last month continued.“We knew we were going to haveto withstand ferocious pressurefrom Manchester City. We did itand we did it remarkably well,”said O’Neill who took over withthe club in 16th position.

The relatively short 57-kilometre Mar del Plata to Santa Rosa stage was marred by the death of bike com-petitor Jorge Boero, who suffered a fall at the 55km point and went into cardiac arrest. Medical crews at-tended within five minutes, but were unable to save the Argentinean’s life.

2011 car winner Al-Attiyah, now driving for Robby Gor-don’s Hummer team following Volkswagen’s departure, lost nine minutes on the stage when his engine lost oil pressure. Gordon stopped and towed his team-mate to the finish.

“We will see, but this does not look good,” admitted Al-Attiyah. “And, whatever happens, this is not a good way to start the Dakar.”

With their likely main rivals in trouble, X-Raid’s Minis filled the top three at the end of the stage, with Novitskiy five seconds ahead of Krzysztof Holowczyc and nine in front of Stephane Peterhansel.

“Today’s special was very short, so we put the pedal on the metal, especially in the sandy sector,” said Novitskiy.

“We only found another car on the course, but I was able to overtake it without any problems. In short: a good result for a perfect day.” Giniel de Villiers’ Toyota and Gordon complete the early top five.

FERRARI is confident that the tech-nical restructuring and staff changes it undertook during a disappointing 2011 campaign are now paying off as it strives to get back on terms with chief rivals Red Bull and McLaren this year.

The Scuderia finished a distant third in the constructors’ championship and scored just one win - Fernando Alonso’s at Silverstone in July. From early on in 2011 it was clear that Ferrari’s 150 Ita-lia had been too conservative a design, struggled to warm up the harder com-pound Pirelli tyres and its development suffered from poor correlation with the team’s wind tunnel data.

But Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says internal restructuring that included the hiring of Pat Fry, who replaced Aldo Costa as technical direc-

tor last June, resolved a lot of these issues and is now beginning to show results as the team ramps up its assault on 2012.

“When we see the stopwatch at the first qualifying for the first race, then we will know the answer,” said Domenicali, “but I see some things that give us optimism that we are doing a reasonable job.

“We try to look ahead and change the organisation in order to make sure in terms of ideas and teamwork in the tech-nical office, the work of the windtunnel and simulation, we are more prepared. I’m optimistic because of this.

“Then, as always, we know that the first result where we compare our job with our main competitors is the first qualifying for the first race. But we are

working in the right direction.”In an interview AUTOSPORT con-

ducted with Fry in December, the Englishman himself said that the cor-relation of data with the windtunnel was improving.

“You are never going to get perfect correlation,” said Fry. “It’s a constantly evolving thing. But we’ve learned a lot and we are improving. We are getting better. Even with track testing, you’d want that correlation, but once you can use mathematical modelling to analyse the car and work out what’s quicker, that also allows you to make better decisions.”

Fry also promised that the design team largely responsible for last year’s car had been encouraged to be more adventurous with the 2012 machine.
