• Population for East Riding is approx 337,000 and rising

• The GVA produced by the East Riding is £4,347bn.

• GVA per head is £13,055, this is 63% of the England average of £20,458

• The East Riding shares a close economic relationship with Hull. 28.8% of its population

travel to Hull for employment. 11% of East Ridings' workforce reside within the Hull

boundary

• The East Riding economy is diverse with Ports & Logistics, Agriculture and Food

Manufacture, Tourism, Chemicals, Advanced Engineering and Energy Generation all

being important sectors, with Renewables an emerging key growth sector.

• The unemployment JSA rate in the East Riding is currently 3.3% (Y&H 4.5% UK 3.8%)

• Workplace-based skills and earnings are significantly below household-based

• Deep pockets of economic deprivation exist in some areas, especially, Bridlington, Goole SE Holderness, Beverley and Cottingham.

Future Opportunities – Offshore Wind

• 1,000 turbines must be built every year until 2020

• 3 of the largest off shore zones, each with thousands of turbines, can be

reached within 12 hours sailing time from Hull

• 10,000 real jobs for Hull, the East Riding and the wider Humber region

• Green Port Hull is deliverable by 2014

Enterprise Zones Benefits

• A 100 per cent business rate discount worth up to £275,000 over a five year period, for businesses that move into an Enterprise Zone during the course of this Parliament;

• All business rates growth within the zone for a period of at least 25 years will be retained and shared by the local authorities in the Local Enterprise Partnership area to support their economic priorities;

• Government and local authority help to develop radically simplified planning approaches in the zone; and

• The Government will make enhanced capital allowances for investment in plant and machinery available in designated areas within a limited number of Enterprise Zones. This is only available where the Government and Local Enterprise Partnership agree that it is better for the local economy to focus on a smaller number of companies making significant capital intensive investments. The vast majority of Enterprise Zones will retain a focus on attracting greater volumes of companies through business rate discounts.

• 374 Hectares of land available

• Potential of attracting 4 wind turbine manufacturers

• Potential 12,500 jobs

• Regional Growth Fund (RGF) bid for North Bank sector support - £25.7m

• Both building on the potential Siemens investment and other off-shore wind turbine manufacturers.

• Secure large inward investment into the region

• Assist local businesses to enter the supply chains of Siemens and their suppliers.

• Facilitate training opportunities for local people.

• Address infrastructure constraints impinging on opportunities in the sector.

• Establish Hull as a Centre for R&D for the Renewables industry.

BAE Systems Announcement – 27th September2011

• 3,000 jobs losses at its UK plants.

• Commenced consultation on ending the manufacturing capability at the Brough site which would result in 899 job losses

• Chancellor of the Exchequer’s invitation to Humber LEP to draw up proposals for new Enterprise Zones to be operational by April 2012 (as with all the other Enterprise Zones).

• The Humber LEP and its partners have worked up a complementary proposal comprising of 150ha of land and existing buildings, to enhance the delivery of the original Humber Green Port Corridor Enterprise Zone (HGPC EZ).
