Is a professional duct cleaning right for you?The EPA recommends having a professional duct cleaning for these main concerns:
RenovationIf your home has been remodeled--especially if there was asbestos abatement, lead paint removal,
or significant dust. Ducts should be sealed off during renovations, but if they weren’t, dust and debris may have become lodged inside the ductwork.
Animals or VerminIf there’s evidence of a pest infestation or nesting in your ducts or HVAC system, we suggest
having the animals removed, then cleaning the ductwork and HVAC unit.
Mold or BacteriaIf there is visible mold, fungus, or microbial growth inside the ductwork.
ContaminantsIf noticeable debris, pet hair, odors, or other contaminants are being released into the room
through the ducts after the registers have been cleaned and vacuumed.
Illness or Allergies If someone in your family is suffering from an unexplained allergy-related illness, and you’ve taken every other possible step to decontaminate your home.
Time Over time your ducts can accumulate dust, bacteria, or other contaminants and can require cleaning around every 5 years.

How to Avoid Scams Make sure you’re hiring a reputable, professional duct cleaning company.
Here are some tips to spot and avoid scams.
Scare Tactics: Any time scare tactics are used claiming that your home may be “unhealthy” or “dangerous”, homeowners
run the risk of being frightened into unnecessary spending.
Full Service: Duct cleaning should include more than just cleaning your ducts. Make sure the service includes a full cleaning of the heating and cooling unit performed by a
NADCA certified HVAC technician.
Upfront Pricing: Ask for upfront prices from at least three HVAC cleaning services. A reputable company should provide
a free inspection and upfront pricing estimate.
Avoid Gimmicks: $79 whole house specials only vacuum a few ducts or push for a much more expensive
package. High-quality duct and HVAC cleaning should cost several hundred dollars, take several hours with
sophisticated equipment, and involve multiple workers.
Certifications: The cleaning company should be certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), which sets standards for HVAC system cleaning. The EPA does not
certify duct cleaners, so avoid anyone making that claim.
Verify Results: You should be offered a visual inspection of the HVAC system and ductwork, either in person or by remote camera. Make sure every duct is clean and inspect the inside of
the HVAC unit.
Avoid Steam Cleaning: Any kind of duct cleaning involving steam or moisture should be avoided.
