Story and Photos by Pat KrauseThe Warburton Celebrity

Golf Classic is one of the most anticipated events to happen in the Desert. The event is held to raise money for St. Jude Hospital that helps children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses free of charge. Celebrities are eager to participate in this life-saving charitable tournament and parties. The event has grown so much in its four short years

that they have to use two golf courses to accommodate all the players. There were 43 teams, and each team had one or two celebrities playing. Celebrities playing golf included singers, actors, comedians, songwriters and famous sports figures. Many are Hall of Famers and award winners in their respective fields.

Golf was played at both the Classic Club Golf Course and the Marriott Desert Springs

on Sat. and Sun. An awards banquet was held at the Classic Club on Sunday after the end of play. Each golfer was treated to a breakfast every morning with a shotgun start. All golfers had the opportunity to watch the Dan Boever Golf Show before play. Dan Boever shows the golfers a lot of trick shots. He gets the golfers included in his show by having them perform some of the shots by hitting a golf ball off a tall stick or trying to strike a huge piece of a plaster board. He incorporates a lot of jokes

and has the golfers laughing through most of his show. He offers prizes to anyone who can make the shot but few can and its very funny.

The Warburton event starts on Thursday night with a Songwriters party. Several hundred guests filled a large white tent at the Marriott Desert Springs. The songwriter’s night was about the Story behind the song and featured a lot of Country tunes. Each songwriter sang and played the guitar and told about the songs they wrote

and told about each of their most famous songs and whom they wrote it for. Songwriters included Tim Nichols, “Live Like You Were Dying,” Rivers Rutherford,” Living in Fast Forward”, Kelly Lovelace, “All-American Girl and Bob DePierre,”American Made.” ALl of these songwriters have written hit songs for the top names in country music. Robin Meade hosted the night, and Mike Wilson performed comedy. Additional songwriting celebrities also performed for the audience of Golfers and their families.

Story and Photos by Pat KrauseOn Monday March 2nd,

the Annenberg Theater in the Palm Springs Art Museum held a special event for the Jewish Family Service of the Desert. Lucie Arnaz, The daughter of Lucy and Desi Arnaz showed excerpts from her Emmy winning documentary, Lucy and Desi, A Home Movie. Patrick Evans hosted the event from CBS local 2 television. Patrick Evans and Lucie Arnaz sat on Stage as several portions of the documentary were shown. Evans had Lucie’s conversation about the part of the Documentary shown and spoke about each segment.

The Home Movie was a trip back in time to see Lucy and Desi in a home setting. It showed their

wedding and the arrival of their two children. Lucie told about their home life as children and how the many celebrities would be a part of their daily lives. It was viewed as just a normal part of living. This documentary shows an honest portrayal of family life and brought out the very sensitive and emotional details. Lucie said it was hard to be able to tell a true story, so she talked to friends and business associates to get a full picture of their lives. There were thousands of hours of film to choose from. In her quest to make this documentary honest, she saw her parent’s lives as an adult and not just in the eyes of a child.

The evening started with a cocktail reception catered by Lulu California Bistro. VIP tickets

included premier seating, the reception and a souvenir DVD of the Film. Other tickets were sold for the film event. Lucie showed four sections of her film with a discussion after each. At the end of the program, she held a short Q&A with questions from the audience. She said they made the whole film without any clips from the hit TV series, I Love Lucy, as many of the home movies included rehearsals of the show, and they were not permitted to use any parts of the TV show. Lucie Arnaz is a multi talented actress who has starred on Broadway, has appeared on many TV shows and movies, produced TV specials and is married to actor Laurence Luckinbill.

By Janice GoughThey say invincibility is a

trait of the young. It’s a mindset that changes gradually with knowledge, education and

wisdom. It’s also something a person gets over as they become less ignorant later in life. But today, apparently, many older and wiser people still believe they are invincible.

Many seniors believe they will have family or finances… and hopefully both, to manage the need any long-term care, and that they will never go into a nursing facility. As one ages, the body becomes weaker. Even those who are athletic, find themselves needing help. The primary reason that people must go to nursing or assisted living is due to falls. This may derive from weak joints (hips and knees), pour eyesight or hearing, memory loss, dizziness, or an unexpected vice, such as ice, water, uneven walkways, or objects we trip over. Anything can happen to the most athletic person. Think of the young athlete who has a

heart attack or a biker who gets hit by a car. Wouldn’t it be great if parents thought of purchasing a lifelong plan for their child at age One. The cost of a plan is cheaper the younger you are and the plan will provide coverage for a lifetime.

The question of, whether you may need LTC are answered with these statistics: The odds are, Yes! According to the Department of Health and Human Services, roughly 70 percent of all baby boomers are going to need some form of LTC in retirement, while 25 percent of that 70 percent will need to stay in an LTC facility for longer than three years.

If you look at the numbers, there are presently 76 million baby boomers, according to the U.S. Census. A very large chunk of them will need this type of nursing care in their near

future, but how many of them have LTC insurance? Fewer than 8 percent of Americans have ever factored any health costs into their financial plan, let alone their own retirement plans.

Only about eight million Americans have LTC coverage out of a population of 313 million, according to 2012 projections. According to the Department of Aging, 53 million people will need some type of LTC in the next 10 to 30 years. The problems we have as a nation are only going to be compounded later on as this demographic starts to divert the nation’s resources to tend to their care… all due to the rationale of invincibility.

If you had a 70 percent chance of hitting the lottery, how many of you would buy a ticket? The answer, which shouldn’t come as a shock, is

that everyone would buy a ticket. People will happily invest a buck on a scratchy at 70 percent odds, but they won’t invest in their own LTC at those same percentages.

It should be noted that the notion of invincibility is not the only issue when it comes to planning for LTC. The cost of the insurance alone is most likely the true deterrent of not planning properly, but even that is starting to change.

The Invincibility Mindset

Who’s In Charge, Director Trespass, Condo or Not?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCALDear Kelly:

I really like your column. I’m on an HOA board and

pride myself in keeping up with HOA legislation. I learned something new in your reply to a recent question. But I also felt there was a lost opportunity. The questioner termed their manager as “the person in charge.” It’s good to remind HOA leaders that the Board is “in charge”--not the property manager! Thank you.

C.R, San Diego

Dear C.R.:You nailed it. The manager

is the association’s managing agent, and the association delegates to the manager, but the board is still ultimately responsible. Boards – make sure you have a clear written understanding as to what you delegate to your manager for action. Managers – make sure that your client association has in the minutes authorized you to act on the association’s behalf, and do not assume. HOA members – the manager should be carrying out the board’s directives, so don’t blame the manager, talk to the board!

Thanks C.R., Kelly

Dear Mr. Richardson:One of our directors likes to

trespass on the ‘exclusive use’ patios of our residents. The president has said that it is okay because the person is a director. I thought exclusive use meant exclusive use unless in case of an emergency or if the board needed to check for violations. All of our patios are completely visible from the common area and there should be no reason for someone to step onto them. What do think?

K.C., Pine Valley

Dear K.C.:Do the governing documents

give the board the authority to inspect the patios? Has the board authorized the director to inspect patios? If the answer is not “yes” to both questions, the director is outside authority and also creating unnecessary friction with neighbors.

Many homeowners were never told the association still has jurisdiction over exclusive use areas, and that each such area is owned in common by all members but only used by one.

Being a director does not give one individual power –

each director has one vote, and power is vested in the board. Well-meaning people can create problems by going too far.

Thanks, Kelly

Mr. Richardson:We appreciated your recent

column on understanding the difference between condos and PUDs. However, our development is referred to as a PUD in some legal documents and filings, and as a condo in others. Do the CC&R’s have the final say, or the filings by the developer with the city/county? Or do we need to look elsewhere? Thanks in advance for any light you can shine on this confusing situation.

M.H., Los Angeles

Dear M.H.:The Common Interest

Development Act does not recognize “PUDs” but uses the term “planned developments”. The document defining which type of common interest is your association is the document dividing up the project into separate saleable interests.

Regarding condos or planned developments, that document is the Subdivision Map or Condominium Plan. That document is filed with your County Recorder and so is publicly available.

Planned developments can be attached homes, and condominiums can be detached homes. Have your association’s lawyer look into this. If the developer made a mistake with the original governing documents, your association may need some help to straighten things out.

Thanks for your question, Kelly

By Beverly Cohn PART ONE: Getting ThereUsually when I’m invited on a

press trip, my family and friends are very excited for me. When my trip to Israel materialized, I eagerly shared with everyone what for me what was great news. Their smiles suddenly faded and were replaced with looks of deep concern. “Be careful.” “Be careful.” “Be careful.” I heard that over and over again, with one email from a friend reading: Don’t leave the group. Don’t eat in any outdoor cafes. Don’t use the buses. Don’t use any underground parking… Have a good time! Don’t. Don’t. Don’t. That was the “bon voyage” sentiment that came at me from just about everyone.

While I’m fully aware of the recent hostilities taking place in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, not for a split second

did I have a single worry. After all, I was headed to a country that probably has the best security in the world. No El Al plane has ever been hijacked or shot down, which is due in large part to the routine security measures at airports and the state-of-the-art defense systems in place in that tiny country, no bigger than the state of New Jersey. In addition, many of El Al’s aircraft are equipped with anti-missile technology.

After my United Airlines flight out of LAX arrived at JFK in New York, I headed over to the El Al ticket counter to pick up a boarding pass for the next leg of my journey. A friendly Israeli gentleman greeted me and escorted me to the check-in line, at which point a young woman interviewed me.

“Why are you going to Israel?” she asked.

“I’m going on a press trip,” I replied.

“What is the purpose?” “The purpose is to write a

feature on my experiences.” “Where exactly will you be

going at which hotels will you being staying?”

At this point, I took out my itinerary as prepared by the Israel Ministry of Tourism, which outlined the destinations we would be visiting. She read it carefully and then asked me some more standard questions:

“Did anyone give you a

parcel to take with you to Israel?” “No.” “Did you ever leave your

luggage unattended?” “No.” I had already received a

note from Israel Tourism asking me to be patient and not take offense at any questions that might be considered invasive, so I was fully prepared to even account for my bra size, should I be asked that. After about ten minutes of questioning, I was then escorted to the ticket counter where I was issued a boarding pass and a special invitation to wait in the El Al Lounge for my connecting flight, which would depart in about five hours. Not to worry though, like most Jewish “homes,” the food area was overflowing with wonderful treats and before I knew it, the five hours had flown by and the boarding of my flight to Israel commenced.

I queued up to get on the plane, and when I handed my boarding pass to yet another security officer, he very politely said, “Wait here.” I have to admit that was the only moment of concern, as I couldn’t imagine why I was being detained. He addressed another gentleman behind the counter who picked up the phone and spoke in Hebrew. As I do not speak Hebrew, the only thing I understood was “Beverly Cohn.” The security guy came back in short order and beckoned for

me to proceed to the plane. I asked if there was a problem and he smiled and said, “Not to worry.” Once on board, I was looking forward to the 10-½ hour flight to the Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, and I’m pleased to tell you that delicious free food just kept on coming throughout the duration of the flight.

I share this reassuring experience with you because following the latest conflict; many people cancelled their booked tours or business conventions, as did many well-known entertainers. Some of the notable talent that backed out included Neil Young, America, Backstreet Boys, and Kansas. One entertainer who did not cancel was the amazing Lady Gaga, and I’ll talk more about her incredible performance in Part Two. Knee-jerk reactions to visiting Israel are largely based on uninformed misperceptions about its people, politics, and the realities of normal day-to-day life in that country.”

Most people think Israelis live in constant fear of the next rocket attack. Also, they have gotten much bad press with many stories beginning with incendiary and provocative headlines like, “Israel Kills Civilians” or “Israel Murders Children.” What is glaringly omitted is how many rockets were fired into Israel and that they were acting in their own defense. Despite the occasional

hostilities, life goes on as usual. People wake up in the morning, have their breakfast, which generally includes fresh vegetables, eggs, and cheeses with coffee or tea, and then go off to work or school. Life is active and the streets are alive day and night with people enjoying themselves at lovely cafes. They attend the ballet, opera, movies, as well as classical or rock concerts.

Whether you are a Christian, a Jew, or a Muslim, or whatever your religious background you might be, Israel is a magical place filled ancient religious and cultural wonders and is a fascinating, fun destination for a family vacation. You can be assured that one of Israel’s primary concerns is the safety and security of its visitors. To paraphrase Israel’s old tourism slogan, “Go To Israel. Stay with friends.”

Next week, Part Two, a detailed account of my exciting adventures in Israel, which included visits to the Old City of Jerusalem, the Western Wall, King David’s Tomb, the Room of the Last Supper, the Muslim Quarter, including the Arab market, Capernaum, the ancient Jewish fishing village where Jesus began his ministry, Masada, Yad Vasahem, the National Memorial and Museum of the Holocaust, floating in the Dead Sea, and so much more.

Students are getting a graphic and up-close look at the effects of drinking and driving today as fire, health care and law

enforcement officials host an ``Every 15 Minutes’’ presentation on the campus of Palm Desert High School.

The program aims to call attention to the fact that traffic

crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers, who account for nearly 13 percent of all fatal crashes in the U.S., sheriff’s Sgt. Armando Munoz said.

At the time the program was created in the 1990s, it was estimated that someone was killed or injured in an alcohol-related crash every 15 minutes. In the decades since, that figure has fallen to one person every 53 minutes, organizers said.

The two-day program locally features a life-like demonstration of a crash scene.

Organizers are also seeking

sponsors to provide money and material items to help offset the cost of Every 15 Minute events. Donations can be sent to Palm Desert Police E-15 Minutes program, 73705 Gerald Ford Drive, Palm Desert, CA, 92211.

By Desert Star StaffI have been threatening to do

this for a long time — just sitting down and putting in print all the good times and good things that have happened to me and my family since moving here 40 years ago. With elections coming up in a few months, we will again be bombarded with most every negative imaginable, so let’s start out with some of the positive things about this great area we live in. We had moved from Mariposa County where we had built our own home on our own 18 acres, developed our water supply, built our own fireplace as our only source of heat, finally got electricity, added square footage

to our cabin after a few years and started our family of two girls and a boy. I had a good job teaching at Mariposa County High School. It was truly the good life. Twenty-five years later, we landed in Desert Hot Springs after two stops in Merced and Redlands.

It was now 1975, and we headed for the desert after suffering from the smog for a number of years in the Redlands area. We looked for the perfect spot within 50 miles of Redlands that might be a more healthful spot for a family and for business reasons. After a day of hard work, we craved a spot we could escape to, if only for the night. The answer was Desert

Hot Springs with small hotels, hot water and great restaurants we ended up buying the Kismet Lodge. As I told Barbara, this would keep her off the streets at night. She ended up doing more work than expected while I studied for a real estate license. We then sold in 1978. Next to bring you up to date. There are a number of things taking place or planned to take place in our local real estate market, I plan on keeping you updated on some of the exciting changes that are taking place here in this little city. It will be interesting, in fact; it will be fun to see what happens in our market in the next few years.

Palm Springs Will Begin Major Roads Project

Theresa A. Mike Fashion Show At Spotlight 29 Casino

Harrison Ford in surgery for Broken Bones After Crash

By Angela MonroePALM SPRINGS -- Drivers

in the west end of the valley should be getting ready for some serious road rehab beginning this summer.

The city of Palm Springs is gearing up to tackle the worst roads in the city, and they’ll

begin re-paving dozens of roads starting in June.

People we spoke with today say many of the roads in Palm Springs are cracked, bumpy and have potholes.

“They suck, really they suck, I drive on them all day every day, it almost feels like you’re driving

on the freeway almost,” said William Maddox of Cathedral City.

Visitors have also noticed that some streets need some work.

“As you come to Amado Road, and you hang a left coming downtown, for about a

two or three block stretch there, there’s a huge pothole, and the roads are cracked and they certainly need resurfacing,” said Marty Kaprelian who is visiting from Chicago.

Palm Springs is pumping 12 million dollars into local roads.

Much of that comes from Measure A sales taxes, part from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and part from Measure J -- the one percent sales tax approved by voters in 2011.

“This project will deliver on that promise to allocate those Measure J funds for street projects similar to what you see behind me,” said Marcus Fuller, the assistant city manager and city engineer.

Already, the city hall’s parking lot is torn up.

Dozens of roads are on the list for repair with some little residential streets, and other major roads.

A company did a survey that found the worst

pavement in the city.“We decided to focus on the

worst of the worst so the list of streets essentially goes from the bottom the worst of the worst and works its way through the streets that we could accomplish with 12 million dollars that we have,” said Fuller.

The city plans to start the projects by June, and hopes to finish them all before the holidays.

Many who live or visit Palm Springs say that will be a great gift.

“Yes, I encourage that 100% and I think that would be a great job for the city and the mayor to do,” said part-time Palm Springs resident, Charmane Johnson.

update from the family: Harrison is in “minor” surgery for broken bones after plane crash.

Actor Harrison Ford has been injured in a small plane crash in Los Angeles. Initial reports that Ford was critically injured have proven false: His family is confirming to KMIR that he’s okay. The plane piloted by the actor made a crash landing on a golf course in the Venice area of Los Angeles.

It was apparently a world-war two era plane.

KMIR News has spoken with a member of the Ford family. She says the actor is awake and alert with several gashes on his head. Family is rushing to the hospital to be with him.

FROM KNBC in Los Angeles:

Actor Harrison Ford was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after a single-engine plane he was piloting crashed onto a Venice golf course shortly after takeoff.

Just before 4:30 p.m. a family member confirmed to KMIR News in Palm Springs that the actor is “fine” and suffered a few gashes.

Aerial footage of the minutes after the crash showed the small single-engine vintage World War II trainer plane crashed on the ground at Penmar Golf Club, and one person being treated by paramedics and being transported to a hospital.

Firefighters described his injuries were described as “moderate.”

TMZ first reported that Ford, a longtime pilot, piloted the plane. The information was later confirmed by NBC4.

In a 2008 interview with National Geographic, Ford talked about his love of flying.

“I fly myself everywhere. I like all kinds of flying, including practical flying for search and rescue. And I also like to fly into the backcountry, usually the Frank Church Wilderness in Idaho,” the “Indiana Jones” actor told the magazine. “I go with a group of friends, and we set up camp for about five days

and explore little dirt strips and canyons.”

He also recalled helming a helicopter when it was forced to crash.

“Wel l , there was a mechanical failure while we were practicing power recovery autorotations. It was more or less a hard landing,” he recalled. “Luckily, I was with another aviation professional and neither

of us was hurt—and both of us are still flying.”

The cause of Thursday’s plane crash is not yet known.

“We saw this beautiful plane. It looks like a plane I see often, leaving from Santa Monica Airport. Must have hit top of tree,” said Howard Teba, who was at the golf course when the plane crashed.

Teba said it appeared that

the pilot was the only person on board the plane. Two men who are apparently doctors were golfing at the time and came to the actor’s aid, Teba said.

The plane crashed on the golf course just west of the airport shortly after takeoff from the Santa Monica Airport, according to Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration. Source KMIR

The regional travel series, Southwest Stories with Steve Brown, launches Monday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. on KVCR PBS Television. Southwest Stories takes viewers on road trips from the California deserts into the Southwest, introducing them to fascinating people and destinations in the region.

Brown is an award-winning journalist and publisher of The Sun Runner, The Journal of the Real Desert, a regional desert magazine now in its 21st year in print. He previously had a well-reviewed PBS series in 2013, The Real Desert, with Steve Brown.

“Southwest Stories really picks up where The Real Desert left off,” Brown noted. “We try to give you a real taste of the desert, with a mix of history, culture, travel destinations, and personalities. The music for the show is all from independent musicians from the desert or with ties to the desert, and we feature desert artists, historians, dining, lodging, and attractions. We give you the real thing as we experience it, not like scripted “reality” shows.”

This season begins when Southwest Stories takes viewers to the Ridgecrest, California area where they visit Randsburg, a living ghost town, Ridgecrest, and the fantastic Little Petroglyph Canyon, the largest known concentration of Native American petroglyphs in the western hemisphere. From Ridgecrest, the show then explores the Lake Havasu, Arizona, area and gets airborne during the Havasu Balloon Festival, heads south along the Mexican border to visit the History of Museum in Granite, located in Felicity, California, then visits Yuma, Arizona, and returns to home turf around Joshua Tree, California to share adventures closer to home.

Some of the featured guests for this season include historians Lorraine Blair and Jacque-Andres Istel, artists Snake Jagger and Bobby Furst, and live musical performances where Brown performs with the California Celts and the Gypsy Cowboy String Quartet. Additional music in the show includes work by Randy Godfrey and Bobby Furgo, Glenn Patrik, Jewels and Johnny

Nation, Steve Rushingwind, Tim Easton, and There Be Pirates! Brown’s own band. (Brown is a musician who has toured England twice with There Be Pirates!, and has been an artist-in-residence and classroom teacher of music.) Theme music for Southwest Stories is by Native American Music Award (NAMMY) two-time winner, Steve Rushingwind and the Rushingwind Project, with Brown on percussion.

Southwest Stories takes viewers up in hot air balloons, kayak fishing, hiking, exploring ghost towns, to sacred sites, digging cactus, mechanical bull riding, wine tasting, shopping, dining, and just having fun and meeting new friends, while highlighting travel to the region. This May, Southwest Stories will be shooting new episodes in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

By Desert Star WeeklyLOS ANGELES, Calif. –

Today residents and leaders from more than 100 communities in Southern California learned if they would be saying Bonjour!, ¡Hola!, ! ًابحرم , 您好!, Привет! or Hello! Beginning July 21 when they host 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches in the day’s prior to start of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Delegates from as many as 170 Special Olympics Programs from around the world will spend three days and nights in communities stretching from San Luis Obispo to San Diego as part of the Host Town program – enjoying a warm welcome to the U.S. before moving into the Athlete Villages at USC and UCLA on July 24. Additional communities and delegations

will be announced in the coming weeks, including the Host Town for Special Olympics Team USA.

Today’s Host Town pairing announcement follows the successful Head of Delegation Conference that opened with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti greeting the attendees with “welcome to your second home.” The four-day conference held January 21-25, 2015, brought together key members of national and international Special Olympics Programs to learn about World Games venues, operations and services. The Opening Ceremony of the World Games, now less than five months away, will be held at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on July 25 and televised to a worldwide audience by ESPN.

The Host Town program has been an important element of Special Olympics World Games since 1995. The experience has left a lasting impression on the local communities in Ireland, Japan, China, Greece, South Korea and the United States, all of which have previously organized Host Town programs as part of the Special Olympics World Games. Communities are evaluated on the availability of lodging accommodations, sports practice facilities and recreation/entertainment offerings for the athletes, among other criteria. Each Host Town committee is also responsible for planning activities for the athletes to introduce them to the community and help spread the word about the World Games.

“The Host Town program

gives each community an opportunity to showcase to the world what makes them special, but more importantly to provide citizens with a better understanding of intellectual disabilities that will lead to acceptance and inclusion for all,” said Patrick McClenahan, President and CEO of LA2015. “Long after the World Games are over, the memories of those three days spent at Host Town will leave a lasting legacy for Special Olympics Southern California and everyone who was touched by our athletes. We are thankful to all participating Host Towns and their tireless volunteers for opening their doors - and their hearts - to our athletes and coaches.” Source KMIR

By Desert Star StaffLease of one-year duration

to provide flexibility as City, County, and Team consider next steps and future stadium possibilities

Oakland, CA – Today, the Joint Powers Authority approved a short-term lease renewal for the Oakland Raiders to remain as tenants at the Oakland Coliseum. The team and the Authority plan to remain in active discussions for future tenancies and even stadium projects on the site.

The lease for the Oakland

Raiders was extended through the end of the 2015-2016-football season. The Raiders will pay a fee of $400,000 in December 2015 with an additional fee for use of the training facility in Alameda, CA. The Oakland City Council and the Alameda County Board of Supervisors must now approve the lease.

“This is a good start and we need to maintain this momentum,” said Oakland City Councilmember and Joint Powers Authority Chair Larry Reid. “Starting today, we can

work with new urgency and take a fresh look at the opportunity ahead of us to find a solution for our teams and our community,” he added.

Joint Powers Authority Executive Director Scott McKibben said, “We are confident in the future for professional sports in Alameda County and Oakland. The re a re nume rous paths forward to retain all of our teams and support the local economy. We will use this lease term to continue to work on a long-term solution

that works for all parties.”“We know a long-term

solution will require public participation, but we are already ahead of the game,” added JPA Board Member and Oakland’s Vice-Mayor Rebecca Kaplan. “We have planned and looked for ways to help leverage public resources like our land, our infrastructure and new funds from Measure BB for upgrades to transit, transportation, and infrastructure, to help ease the path to an enduring solution,” she added.

College to Host Native American Powwow

Most don’t recognize there are traditional, stable, responsible and detailed aspect to Aries. These virtues help you become successful in all endeavors. You recognize these qualities when assessing your personal value and worth. You know it’s not how much money you have or make. It’s more about perseverance, reliability and being steadfast when encountering challenges and adversity. True self value - your new task.

Your patience and deliberateness are how you assess everything, moving step-by-step with steadfast yet thorough care. You have a visionary illumined mind. Taurus is influenced by the Pleiades, stars Aldebaran and Alcyone, source of the Buddha’s wisdom. With monetary situations you’re instinctive and intuitive (Taurus gifts) - apparent with a partner, in August, as Venus retrogrades.

Your work in the world must align with your values. Gemini is a complex, dual sign, with a fluid mind. All information is first filtered through your emotional (astral) body which must be clear, pure, with no judgments or opinions. This must be developed. You’re the sign of hidden treasures. Security for you isn’t money or

wealth. It’s emotional ethics and whatever you love.

You’re challenged to emerge from under your protective shell, have a sense of adventure, step beyond comfort and tend to things more on the edge. Connect more deeply with others, creating heart to heart contact. This will further a sense of love, of self-expression and creativity, things you quietly seek. It’s also important for you to have some fun. What would that be for you?

Most Leos are charming. Some are hidden. But all Leos are magnetic – important to understand as magnetism attracts others to you. When aware of this you will either be kind and compassionate or you will create fear in others. Leo is also powerful. Power must include love, or it destroys. People encountering you seek light, intelligence, vitality, a certain discipline, direction and willingness to Love. Do you have (and understand) these qualities?

Along with your excellent qualities of order, organization and disciplined list making (all things Pisces longs for), you seek peacekeeping skills. All Virgos learn refinement and

how to act with Goodwill, which creates Right Relations. It is good to know these are the vital life-giving seeds planted within all Virgos that lead later to the art of cooperation, conciliation and negotiation. Virgos are learning the gifts and skills of Libra.

The smile in your eyes invites others to share about themselves, their joys and sorrows, and to be friends with you. The Soul of Libra offers fairness, justice, openness and kindness. If not yet within this expanded Soul reality, visualize yourself stepping into it. The results will happiness at first, then joy. Concerning money and resources, the boundaries you have created to protect yourself from loss become more loving.

Most Scorpios are aware that whatever they do often challenges others. Are you aware also that this is your task. As you’re constantly challenged to transform and regenerate, you also ask (demand) this of others. A life of such intensity needs consistent times for rest and retreat –to gather strength, rediscover inner meaning and purpose. Only a few know, through constant little deaths, like a phoenix flying out from fire, that you’re also a visionary.

Although you usually view life with broad hopeful optimism and because you’re an imaginative thinker who sees signs and reads oracles in every situation, you also have a sense of being duty-bound, responsible, traditional and conservative. These gifts hide behind Sag’s constant enthusiasm. Working under rules and regulations, you have a very serious side. This you must begin to value. It’s your discipline and your wisdom.

You exhibit great control, discipline, structure and reserve, often playing the role of the parent or wise one. Traditions are most important either following or creating them. But there are valuable parts to you – being progressive and inventive. Here you enter the future, being different than most. Often people can’t understand your abilities to change quickly and to offer everyone freedom to be (you and me).

It’s important to acknowledge that you, like the planet Uranus, are different than most. Aquarius streams through Uranus and both influence you. Uranus is tipped on its side, it’s atmosphere is arranged in layers of clouds, its magnetic-tail twisted into a long corkscrew, the source of its magnetic field is unknown, it’s blue/green, has a moon,

many rings and satellites, seventh planet from the Sun and 3rd largest planet in the solar system. This unusual planet rules your life. Value and identify your differentness (as unique and beloved).

The two s igns most misunderstood are Scorpio and Pisces. Often the fish is seen as wandering about, a bit too idealistic, too sensitive, confused. In the outer world you can seem lost and dreamy. But there’s much more to Pisces. You’re brave and courageous when someone’s in danger. You stand for the downtrodden and see everyone’s innate gifts (which others cannot). When saddened you fall into despair. When spontaneous, light fills the air.

Saturday night was the big gala where golfers and guests walked a red carpet.

Dinner and entertainment followed with Sixwire Band and Mickey Thomas, Jefferson Starship, performing. Two families from St. Jude were honored, and a live auction was held. The goal this year was to raise one million dollars for St. Jude

Children’s Research Hospital, and they succeeded that with, $1,120,000.00 thanks to the generosity of those attending. Patrick Warburton and his wife Cathy founded the event 5 years ago. St. Jude has raised the survival rate of childhood cancers from 20 percent to 80 percent today. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia from 4 percent to 94 percent survival. Amazing facts in saving the lives of children and the families never get a bill from St. Jude for anything.

Natural Product Expo “Stirs it Up”

By Pam Price The Natural Products

“Expo” West at t racted over almost 80,000 health-conscious enthusiasts and 2,600 exhibitors to the Anaheim Convention Center March 4-8. Tempting products showcased by exhibitors from around the world brought environmentally

items to the attention of retailers from Bambooee reusable “un” paper towels to Karma, a “fitness accelerator” flavored water intended to transform “water into wellness.”

Capturing a healthy crowd of coffee lovers was the Marley Coffee exhibit, where Rohan Marley, son of Bob Marley of

reggae fame presented a tasting bar for his capsule, ground and whole bean coffee manufactured in flavors ranging Jamaica from Buffalo Soldier to One Love.

Expo is the staging area for new products supporting the latest in environmentally focused production methods. Representatives are on hand to

With that attitude in mind, here’s a shopping list for those who think organic, green and gluton free.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The BNP Parabas Open

started early-on Saturday March 7th with a Free Charity Event, The McEnroe Challenge for Charity. Joining McEnroe on the Tennis Court was Andy Roddick. McEnroe and Roddick each captained a team of former tennis stars to play for charities, War Casualty Family Assistance Fund, Patient Safety Movement, Eisenhower Medical and the Andy Roddick Foundation. The teams included Roddick, Lindsey Davenport, Madison Keys, and Rick Leach versus McEnroe, Tracy Austin, Coco Vandeweghe and James Blake. They played four games a women’s double, men doubles, mixed doubles and a singles match between James Blake and Andy Roddick.

These matches are so much fun as the players banter back and forth with each other over wireless microphones that the audience can hear. It shows the players in a more relaxed tone than when they are all business on the courts. Even with the fun they still play competitively as money for their charities is up for grabs. $15,000 for the winner and $5,000 to the loser for each match. Masimo is the event sponsor. Shadow Hills High School band and actress Tia Carrere provided pre-match entertainment. The John McEnroe team won the most matches.

McEnroe sported a new white beard and mustache, and they teased him about it

being his version of Fifty Shades of Gray. Roddick wore his traditional white cap so McEnroe put on a white hat during one of the matches. Blake and Roddick had words with each other that had the whole audience laughing. The announcer Andrew Krasny walked over to the bleachers and had Lindsey Davenport’s son Jagger come to the court to play with Roddick. Much to everyone’s surprise Jagger returned several balls before hitting one into the net. This is one fun night to see top Pro Tennis idols in one place playing. 8000 people agreed as

the stadium was filled with tennis fans.

Arthur Miller’s ‘The Price’ at Mark Taper

This year marks the centennial of playwright Arthur Miller (1915-2005). He, like his main characters in “The Price,” Victor and Walter Franz, was born into an affluent Manhattan family. Circumstances changed for Miller and his fictional brothers when the stock market crashed in 1929. The effects of the Great Depression influenced Miller’s life and were a major influence on his greatest works as well.

To honor Miller, one of America’s most acclaimed playwrights, the Center Theatre Group is presenting “The Price,” written twenty years after his Pulitzer Prize-winning “Death or a Salesman” which premiered in 1949. It takes place in New York in the mid 1960’s. Victor Franz (Sam Robards) is awaiting the arrival of Gregory Solomon,

an elderly appraiser, who will make an offer for the furniture and possessions of Victor’s late father. The estate has been locked away in storage, but now wverything must be sold before the old building that has housed them for 16 years is demolished..

Time is running out and Victor, a N.Y. policeman, still hasn’t heard from his estranged brother, Walter (John Bedford Lloyd), a successful doctor. He has called Walter’s medical office several times, but was never able to speak with him, so now Victor must handle the sale of long stored items on his own.

The first to arrive on the scene is Gregory Solomon (Alan Mandell), who, like the actor, is 89 years old and still working. He’s a spry old guy who makes an offer on everything, noting

that the family may keep any personal items they wish to save, but the beautiful harp must be included in the sale price.

Next to show up is Esther (Kate Burton), Victor’s wife who has come to be sure that her husband gets a decent price for the estate. As the play progresses and Walter finally shows up, we learn about the family secrets that caused the rift between the two brothers who, in childhood, had been close.

The Center Theatre Group chose “The Price” to honor Miller’s memory since this play,

like “Death of a Salesman,” is able to “showcase Miller’s uncanny ability to expose our deepest regrets and insecurities....reminding us that our lives don’t always meet the standards of our dreams, but our choices, not our aspirations, determine our fates.”

“The Price,” directed by Garry Hynes, builds slowly, allowing everyone’s pain and regrets to be revealed gradually before the long held resentments resurface. The title, “The Price,” refers not only to the amount of money the family will make on

the sale of the furniture, but more importantly the to the terrible price each of them has paid by not facing their personal demons long ago.

The set, neatly stacked from floor to ceiling with all types of furniture and personal items from the period. was designed by Matt Saunders.

“The Price,” at the Mark Taper Forum in downtown Los Angeles at the Music Center, runs through March 22. For tickets and information visit CenterTheatreGroup.org or call (213) 628-2772.

MUS I C BY ROBERT KINSLER

Rhiannon Giddens, Kelly Clarkson, the Lone Bellow and Mark Ronson have all released new albums sure to please fans of their respective genres.

Artist: Rhiannon GiddensTitles: Tomorrow Is My Turn (Nonesuch) You might like if you enjoy: Carolina Chocalate Drops, Johnnyswim, Rosanne Cash

Tell me more: Few singers make the kind of immediate impression that Rhiannon Giddens does on her solo debut, the stunning “Tomorrow Is My Turn.” While the 11-song disc features only one original song (the affecting Americana ballad “Angel City”), producer T Bone Burnett has worked with Giddens (a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) and conjured up a haunting

power in versions of seldom-heard gems by the likes of Geeshie Wiley (“Last Kind Words”), Jacques Wolfe (“Waterboy”), Dolly Parton (“Don’t Let It Trouble Your Mind”) and Elizabeth Cotten (“Shake Sugaree”) that effectively navigate a mix of old-time Delta blues, jazz, authentic country and soul in the service of Giddens’ magic. Information: RhiannonGiddens.com.

Artist: Kelly ClarksonTitle: Piece By Piece (RCA)You might like if you enjoy: Kelly Clarkson, John Legend

Tell me more: Filled with contemporary radio-ready pop that is decidedly infectious, Kelly Clarkson’s sixth full-length album Piece By Piece is sure to please fans. The lead-off “Heartbeat Song” is an uptempo slice of

modern pop, while the R&B-styled “Invincible” and “I Had a Dream” showcase the singer’s high-soaring soprano range. Her first new album since 2011’s “Stronger,” a close listen to the disc (especially the alluring electronica-tinged “Someone” and driving “Achtung Baby” era U2-capturing “Dance With Me”) confirms the Fort Worth, Texas native has a powerful and expressive voice that far outdistances those of fellow hit makers Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. Further evidence comes when Clarkson and John Legend team for the convincing power ballad “Run Run Run.” Information: KellyClarkson.com.

Artist: The Lone BellowTitle: Then Came the Morning (Descendant Records)You might like if you enjoy:

Brandi Carlile, The Lone Bellow’s 2013 debut, Carolina Chocolate Drops

Tell me more: Blending gospel, folk, blues and Americana, the Lone Bellow’s sophomore effort “Then Came the Morning” packs the same wonderful punch as the Brooklyn, New York-based trio’s self-titled 2013 debut. The rousing title track, soaring “Take My Love” and rock ‘n’ gospel “Heaven Don’t Call Me Home” show off the trio’s songwriting. And everywhere sweet harmonies, nuanced arrangements and strong musical instincts make everything perfect. Information: TheLoneBellow.com.

Artist: Mark RonsonTitle: Uptown Special (RCA)You might like if you enjoy: Bruno Mars, Stevie Wonder,

Mystikal, Earth, Wind & FireTell me more: Equally skilled

as a DJ, producer and musician, Mark Ronson brings all his talents to the fore on his latest full-length project “Uptown Special.” A party from start to finish, the album is truly a musical celebration at the sound and styles that influenced the artist growing up in England. Indeed, Stevie Wonder helps get the party started playing harmonica on the opener “Uptown’s First Finale.” The cool soul groove of “Summer Breaking,” the R&B dance tune “Leaving Los Feliz” and sonic festival “Uptown Funk” (featuring Bruno Mars) all exude a retro cool while boasting a modern-day sound. Call for Art: “Color Explosion” at Twentynine Palms By Desert Star Staff

“Color Explosion: Nothing Subtle About the Desert” is the theme for the spring Art in Public Places exhibition at the Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce,

73484 29 Palms Hwy., downtown Twentynine Palms. The show will be on display from April 1 through June 26, 2015.

Desert artists are invited to submit an original piece of art for possible inclusion in the group

exhibition. Artwork should be delivered to the visitor center on Friday, March 27, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Artists unable to make this time on In/Out Day are asked to make special delivery arrangements with a Chamber representative by calling the office at (760) 367-3445 any weekday prior to March 27.

Artwork should reflect the theme of spring in the desert,

which can be an explosion of color, not necessarily a subtle or barren desert as some people may expect. Artwork can include painting, watercolor, mixed media, photography, and three-dimensional work such as assemblage, ceramics, and sculpture. All work must be ready to mount or hang with professional wire, must be offered for sale, and should be suitable for viewing by the general public.

The gallery at the Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce is open daily at the corner of the highway and Desert Queen Avenue, downtown Twentynine Palms. An opening art reception is planned for Friday, April 3, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., with refreshments and music.

For those of you who are too young either to have seen or enjoyed America’s early entertainment art form (and that includes me), you now have a window of opportunity to enjoy that “old but new” entertainment experience – Vaudeville as it was performed back in the early 20th century.

The Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) production of a “Handful of Nickels & Dimes” now on the stage of IPAC returns the audience back one hundred years in time. A time before radio and television variety shows, to a time when live actors and musicians performed all sorts of comedy and slapstick skits, magic shows, juggling and acrobatic acts, and musical numbers.

Vaudeville, as it was known back then, along with its performers, was in the vanguard of an art form that would ultimately morph into the Broadway musical theatre. When TV came along, TV variety shows and TV sitcoms followed the successful formula of early Vaudeville; adding modern technology to its presentation formats.

Professional performers Jeanette Knight and Michael Seneca were eager share some of the best routines of that era with today’s audiences. They gathered a group of their professional friends and all put their heads together coming up with a show called “Handful of Nickels & Dimes” that pays homage to the early days of American show business.

Burlesque, was hilarious,

bawdy and skit-oriented; quickly becoming home to the naughty ‘double-entendre’. Vaudeville, its more dignified cousin, was the home of the star and headliner variety of performers, like Fanny Brice, performed at IPAC by Knight. Also, a tribute to Burns and Allen, is performed by Knight and Seneca who wonderfully morph into George and Gracie, and the Ziegfeld Follies that features celebrity actor/director Justin Blake as Follies Headliner Will Rogers, and many more.

The show boasting a company of seven performers, who sing, tell jokes and re-create some of the famous numbers and gags from Vaudeville’s golden era include: Jeanette Knight, Michael Seneca, Dean Apple, Justin Blake, Cat Lyn Day, Stephen Kaufmann, Dean Apple, and

special guest star Yve Evans, named Monterey Jazz Festival’s musician of the year in 2008. These talented performers are all award-winning familiar faces, many having performed in venues throughout the Coachella Valley over the years.

One of the highlights of the evening features the incomparable music styling of Eve Evans who brings to life the voice and music of the great Bessie Smith with such renditions as “If You Don’t, I Know Who Will” and the saucy “Handy Man”. “Make Some One Happy” from the Broadway show “Little Me”; “Second Hand Rose from the Ziefeld Follies show of 1921”; and a poignant styling of “My Man” that is pure poetry, along with. “Black and Blue” by Linda Hopkins and Ruth Brown both

of whom are favorites of Evans which, thankfully, usually find their way into her performances.. The duet with Blake of “Let’s Fall in Love” by the great Harold Arlen, and Frank Loesser’s classic 1944 “Baby Its Cold Outside” hit the spot. My personal Evans favorite is a cheeky, double-entendre number called “The Chair” which, ironically is in keeping with the overall double-entendre theme of the production.

A “Handful of Nickels & Dimes” is a delightful and entertaining evening in the theatre. The , show performs at the Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC), located at 45-175 Fargo St., Indio. For tickets and reservation information call the Box Office at 760-775- 5200. The show runs through March 22, 2015. The curtain is 7:00 pm.

Cathedral City eighth-grader won the Riverside County

Spelling Bee today and will compete in the Scripps National

Spelling Bee in May, school district officials said.

Jenna-May Ingal l , a student at James Workman Middle School, won the county bee in the 39th round by correctly spelling the word ``agama,’’ according to Palm Springs Unified School District spokeswoman Joan L. Boiko.

Jenna-May, who won the PSUSD spelling bee in each of the past five years, placed third in last year’s county bee, Boiko said.

Two dozen Riverside County youngsters tested their word

power in the county’s 38th annual Spelling Bee at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center. The students were from 18 school districts, two college preparatory schools, two private academies, a charter school and the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indian Reservation’s elementary school.

La Quinta – When March hits, the Coachella Valley’s attention is usually split between two powerhouse athletic programs: the six-time defending DVL champion Palm Desert Aztecs baseball team, and eight-time defending DVL champion La Quinta Blackhawks softball team.

With one of the best senior classes in Southern California, Head Coach Darol Salazar’s Aztecs will likely roll through the season to the playoffs. The La Quinta girls, however, will be entering uncharted territory in 2015 because taking league for a staggering ninth consecutive year is going to take more effort than in the past.

Blackhawks head coach DeDe Grutz’ squad is off to its worst start since 2008, a year in which La Quinta still finished 15-0 and won the DVL. This season, after winning the non-conference opener against a respectable program in the

Rancho Cucamonga Cougars, the Blackhawks dropped their next four.

La Quinta lost 10 seniors from last year’ team, so the rugged start is understandable. Except for the now-junior Mia Olvera, the Blackhawks lost a significant portion of its offense with the graduation of Kendyl Scott, Jayme Stark and Dominique Rivas.

Even with the mass exodus of players, Coach Grutz still has two of the DVL’s best pitchers in the aptly named Star Padilla and Mariah Estrada. With a thinner roster than usual, do not underestimate DeDe Grutz, who can turn this core-dominant team into a CIF contender with the snap of a finger.

A slow start is not much to stress over but a slow finish is a virtual season-ender.The Blackhawks would definitely prefer the latter to the former, and just like in 2008, the season can

go from down the drain to Desert Valley League championship.

Two dominant starting pitchers – which is the basic necessity for a winning high school softball team – is all the Blackhawks will need to keep the title contending Coachella Valley Arabs and the Palm Springs Indians at bay this season.

The Blackhawks have won two in a row since the losing streak and look to start a win streak on Tuesday* against the Redlands Terriers. Next Tuesday at 3:30 pm, La Quinta travels north to take on the Hesperia Scorpions. The first league game of the season for the Blackhawks is April 7 at La Quinta High school against the Indio Rajahs at 6 pm.

The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee’s Sale is estimated to be $104,832.18 (Estimated). However, prepayment premiums, accrued interest and advances will in-crease this figure prior to sale. Beneficiary’s bid at said sale may include all or part of said amount. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan asso-ciation, savings association or savings bank speci-fied in Section 5102 of the California Financial Code and authorized to do business in California, or other such funds as may be acceptable to the Trustee. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mort-gagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Missouri Appeals Judge to Take Over Ferguson CourtBy David A. LiebAssociated Press

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri appeals court judge was appointed Monday to take over Ferguson’s municipal court and make “needed reforms” after a highly critical U.S. Department of Justice report that was prompted by the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown.

The Missouri Supreme Court said it is assigning state appeals Judge Roy L. Richter to hear all of Ferguson’s pending and future municipal court cases. The high court said Richter also will have the authority to overhaul court policies to ensure defendants’ rights are respected and to “restore the integrity of the system.”

Ferguson Mun ic ipa l Judge Ronald J. Brockmeyer resigned Monday, saying through a spokesman that he was stepping down to promote public confidence in the court and help Ferguson “begin its healing process.”

The Ferguson City Council met in closed session Monday evening, but members left without taking questions and a city spokesman didn’t disclose the purpose of the meeting. Ferguson City Manager John Shaw was escorted to his vehicle by a police officer without fielding questions, and Mayor James Knowles III declined comment to The Associated Press afterward except to say

that the city on Tuesday would begin seeking Brockmeyer’s permanent successor.

Richter will take charge of the court on March 16. The Supreme Court said it also is assigning staff from the state court administrator’s office to aid Richter in reviewing Ferguson’s municipal court practices.

“Judge Richter will bring a fresh, disinterested perspective to this court’s practices, and he is able and willing to implement needed reforms,” Chief Justice Mary Russell said in a written statement.

“Extraordinary action is warranted in Ferguson, but the Court also is examining reforms that are needed on a statewide basis,” Russell added.

The change comes after the Justice Department released a report last week that cited cases of racial profiling and bigotry by police and chided what it described as a profit-driven municipal court system in the predominantly black St. Louis suburb where Brown, 18, was shot by a white Ferguson police officer on Aug. 9. The shooting prompted protests in the St. Louis area and across the nation.

A St. Louis County grand jury and the U.S. Justice Department both declined to bring charges against Officer Darren Wilson, who resigned from the department. The Justice Department report said Wilson acted in self-defense

when he shot Brown. But the Justice Department

said Ferguson’s police and court systems functioned as a money-making enterprise that heightened tensions among residents.

The federal report noted that Ferguson was counting on revenues from fines and fees to generate $3.1 million, or nearly one-quarter of its total $13.3 million budget for the 2015 fiscal year.

Although it was rare for the court to sentence people to jail as a penalty for city code violations, the Justice Department report said the city’s court almost always imposes monetary penalties and then issues arrest warrants when people fail to pay on time or miss a court date. As a result, relatively minor violations can - and frequently do - lead to arrests and jail time, the report said.

The federal report also cited several instances in which Ferguson’s municipal judge, court clerk or city prosecutor helped “fix” tickets for colleagues and friends.

The report cited the forgiven tickets for Ferguson officials as evidence of “a double standard grounded in racial stereotyping.” It said Ferguson officials displayed “a striking lack of personal responsibility among themselves” while some nonetheless asserted to federal investigators that the

city’s African-American residents lacked “personal responsibility.”

Attorney Bert Fulk said in a statement announcing Brockmeyer’s resignation that Brockmeyer had been “fair and impartial” as a part-time judge and that the court clerk bore the primary responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the court.

The city fired court clerk Mary Ann Twitty last week.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon released a written statement Monday praising the “strong and appropriate actions by the Missouri Supreme Court” to overhaul the Ferguson municipal court.

Monday’s appointment of a new Ferguson judge drew mixed reviews among a dozen onlookers at that night’s council meeting. Derrick Robinson, a protest organizer, said the move was “letting us know they’re hearing our cry, and I think it’s a good step in reconstructing Ferguson.” Meldon Moffitt, of St. Louis, countered that it wouldn’t make anything better, adding “the only way we can clean up Ferguson is to wipe out the police force, wipe out the courts and wipe out the judges.”

“La Gringa” is the third play in a series of four that has been labeled The American Melting Pot” as its theme for the 2014 – 2015 CV REP season. It’s an exploration of four distinct cultures from the pens of four critically-acclaimed playwrights. The first two plays dealt with Jewish culture in America, and then African-American culture. Now comes Hispanic-American culture.

This charming comedy-drama written by Carmen Rivera and insightfully directed by CV REP founding artistic director Ron Celona, explores the vexing Puerto Rican-American experience and the feeling of not belonging in one’s own country It’s frustrating and alienating to be labeled an “outsider, when in reality, you’re an “insider”. This is the situation and dilemma that American-born, Maria Elena Garcia a vivacious, high-energy, up beat dreamer, wonderfully played by Ayanery Reyes finds herself in when she visits Puerto Rico over the Christmas holidays. She even has thoughts of not only of reconnecting with her mother’s relatives but is toying with the idea of staying. With Reyes’ 5000 watt smile and a winning onstage manner, whatever decision she makes regarding Maria will be the right one.

The play centers on the relatives and how each one interacts with Maria; trying hard not to let those pesky venal sins of envy and pride, get in the way of their relationships. Her no-nonsense Aunt Norma Burgos, (an excellent Marina Re) has been estranged from Maria’s mother over the ownership of the family home. Norma’s husband Victor (nicely played by Robert Almodovar) is a

sensible man who understands his wife’s moods and plays the role of family peacemaker. Iris Burgos (a lovely Kyla Garcia), Maria’s cousin, is at a loss as to why Maria is so enamored of Puerto Rico. “There are no jobs available here only tropical heat and mosquitos. Why would you want to move here?” In addition, Maria is considered an American in Puerto Rico – a Gringa. After a while Maria realizes that if she’s a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, she must be nobody everywhere else.

This flawed thinking is dispelled when her Uncle Manolo (charmingly played by Peter Mins) takes charge. When she arrived he has been bedridden for five years; claiming to Norma that he is dying. Once Maria settles in, however, he appears to experience a “medical epiphany” of sorts and begins to show her the real beauty of Puerto Rico and the lessons of life lived by its people. Local farmer Ramon “Monchi” Reyes (Eliezer Ortiz) Manolo’s young friend becomes smitten with Maria during the time he and the wise and colorful Manolo tour her around the island.

The characters all have their moments to shine in this tender ensemble story. Reyes, Re, and Mins, in particular, have powerful onstage memorable moments. Thanks to the technical team

at CV REP, the Puerto Rico set design by Jimmy Cuomo, and lighting design by Eddie Cancel, is nicely realized. The wonderfully colorful costumes of Aasla Lee are spot-on, along with

the sound from top-tier designer Cricket S. Meyers. An extra kudo goes to Eliezer Ortiz for his dialect coaching.

“Family” and love of their language runs deep in the DNA of Latinos and Hispanics, along with the power of family is transformative in their culture.

Puerto Rico may be 3300 miles from California, but audiences here can definitely relate to the issues and the characters in Rivera’s poignant play.

“La Gringa” performs at CV REP Theatre, in Ranch Mirage, and runs through March 22, 2015.
