South Carolina legislators voted overwhelmingly to remove the Confederate battle flag from the monument on capitol grounds. All amendments to the proposal were defeated in a 15-hour debate, and the 94-20 vote took place shortly after 1am local time.

Governor Nikki Haley supported the measure and is expected to sign the bill Thursday afternoon. The flag will be removed Friday morning and sent to the state’s Confederate Relic Room.

“It is a new day in South Carolina, a day we can all be proud of, a day that truly brings us all together as we continue to heal, as one people and one state,” Haley said in a statement.

The proposal to remove the flag from public spaces sailed through the state Senate earlier this week, with amendments being taken off the floor and the final measure approved 37-3. The House, however, considered some 60 amendments to the bill over the course of Wednesday’s session.

According to accounts from the statehouse, a pivotal moment in the debate was the emotional speech by Republican lawmaker Jenny Horne, who called the flag a “symbol of hate” and said that letting it fly for one day more was adding “insult to injury” to the widow and children of the state senator killed in the Charleston church massacre last month.

“I’m sorry, I have heard enough about heritage,” said Horne. “Remove this flag and do it today.”

The National Association

for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) saluted the decision, saying it was a vindication of the organization’s 15-year campaign to bring down the flag.

Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Aids Assistance program

held a special July that’s above the Palm Springs Art Museum. A couple hundred guests enjoyed the spectacular fireworks from the O’Donnell house veranda high off the desert floor. The fireworks could be seen clearly from there, and they could also view fireworks further to the east that could be seen lower in the sky. The view from the top was sensational and Keisha D sang the Star-Spangled Banner as the fireworks started in Palm Springs.

The guests enjoyed free beverages, valet parking and a golf cart ride over the top to the O’Donnell house. A true BBQ buffet was served that included hamburgers on the grill, hot dogs, brats, and corn off the cob and baked beans. This was probably the best place to view the fireworks in Palm Springs as everyone got a bird’s eye view of the show and the desert below. Some guests were attired in red, white and blue and some waved the American Flag. The party was a fun place to celebrate the

4th with friends and still see the colorful fireworks display.

Thousands came to watch the fireworks from the Palm Springs Stadium on Saturday night. People parked their cars wherever they could get a good view. The Palm Springs High School parking lot was full and other parking lots were overflowing as people either watched from their cars or walked to a more convenient location. Families brought chairs and coolers so their children could get a first-hand look at the beautiful display of fireworks. The streets were filled with people walking to the many clearer areas in Palm Springs.

As I drove down Ramon Road, the traffic was almost at a standstill as cars tried to find a place to park along the north side of Ramon Road to watch the show. It seems that everyone wanted to watch fireworks wherever they were shown. Several towns and businesses held their own displays so the whole valley celebrated Independence Day in grand style.

By Pamela Price There’s more on the Visit

California menu this summer than meets the eye. That’s why Visit California advertises their seasonal guide of breaking news in a quarterly magazine you can access at www.visitcalifornia.com. From Solana Beach to Solvang, hotels with heritage are enjoying a second debut. If you’ve been tired of days when the temperature rises to well over 100 in the desert, here are a trio opportunity to cool you down comfortably.

Solana Beach in San Diego County reports the Winner’s Circle Resort has completed a $7 million renovation, including landscaping to its 94 one and two -bedroom suites make it super family friendly. It’s also an perfect arrangement for a friend’s getaway says Mac Williamson, of the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce. Strolling along Cedros Street, the center of this chic town is perfect for pets and people. A visit to Muttropolis

is essential for any pet owner seeking one-of-a-kind designer outfits for their precious poodles or a customized car seat for a travel savvy Maltese.

If you can’t make it to Denmark this summer reserve a guestroom at The Landsby, formerly the Peterson Village Inn in Solvang. Comfortable hand-crafted furnishings will tempt your staying an extra day or to sample refined California Central Coast dining at their “revamped” Mad + Vin ( in Danish, “food and wine”) restaurant putting Scandinavian-inspired dishes in the limelight.

Additionally, sharing the glow is The Copenhagen House spotlighting new businesses while the Solvang Amber Museum exhibits amber from around the world ( but mostly Danish says Laura Kath, my number-one source for this legendary slice of Denmark). She urges visitors to check out the six-foot tall Danish Viking and historical displays in Solvang’s authentic bank building at 1660 Copenhagen Drive at the

corner of First Street. Closer to home is the new

Knickerbockers Trail that visitors to Big Bear Village can easily access.

The paved asphalt is the ¼ mile long and starts at the village drive between Pine Knot Avenue

and Knickerbocker Rd. Cyclists and pedestrians can share the trail that was funded through an Environmental Enhancement Mitigation Program Grant.

mark the war’s centennial.In 2000, following a

campaign by NAACP and other organizations, state legislators agreed to relocate the flag from the capitol dome to a 30-foot flagpole near the Confederate Soldier’s Monument, on capitol grounds.

Activists have campaigned against the flag for years, arguing it was a symbol of racism and oppression, but the public

climate rapidly shifted following last month’s murder of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, SC. The shooter, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, reportedly said his act was racially motivated.

When photos of Roof holding a Confederate flag emerged after his arrest, companies and governments across the US rushed to crack down on the banner. Retailers like eBay and Amazon have banned all

merchandise featuring the flag, and Apple has gone so far as to ban Civil War video games that depicted it.

A North Char leston police officer lost his job over a Facebook photo showing him dressed in flag-themed boxer shorts, while the vicar of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, advocated taking out a stained-glass window commemorat ing Confederate Generals Lee and Jackson – and featuring the battle flag. Even an old television show ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’

was censored, because its protagonists drive a car called ‘General Lee’ with a Confederate battle flag painted on top.

On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives voted to ban the display of Confederate flags at two federally-administered Civil War cemeteries.

The proposal, sponsored by Cal i fornia Democrat Jared Huffman, called for the National Park Service to block private groups from using the flag to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers at Andersonville, Georgia,

and Vicksburg, Mississippi.Many Southerners, however,

consider the flag a symbol of their history and heritage. Johnny Cooper of Alabama is carrying the banner on an 800-mile (1,287km) protest march from the state capital Montgomery to Washington, DC. Setting out on July 4, Cooper has already walked a quarter of the way.

The Charleston killer should not be allowed to define the flag by himself, Cooper told the Charleston Post and Courier, adding, “If I had been there, I would have shot him myself.”

Womens USA Team Wins World Cup!saying that it was a success in itself to reach the Final. Canada 2015 was veteran Japanese midfielder Homare Sawa’s sixth World Cup, a record for the competition, which she now shares with Brazil’s Formiga, who also became the tournament’s oldest markswoman.

With her strike against Korea Republic in the group phase, Formiga’s team-mate Marta became the highest all-time scorer in the Women’s World Cup with 15 goals, one more than the great German striker Birgit Prinz. The Brazilians advanced from the group phase as the only side along with Japan to win all their group matches, but exited the competition in the Round of 16, going down 1-0 to Australia.

Third place went to England, their best finish in the competition. The Three Lionesses secured the last place on the podium courtesy of a 1-0 win over Germany, a victory that broke a 20-game winless run against their old foes. England’s ground-breaking run featured a quarter-final defeat of the hosts, who advanced beyond the group phase for only the second time, much to the delight of the more than 1.3 million viewers who followed their progress on TV.

Germany again missed out on a place in the top three, just as they had done on home soil four years ago, when they

fell in the quarter-finals. With legendary goalkeeper Nadine Angerer having now retired from international football and coach Silvia Neid set to hand over the reins to former international Steffi Jones at the end of 2016, the Germans face a transitional phase.

Judging by the talented youngsters they unveiled in Canada, however, Die Mannschaft would appear to have grounds for viewing any generational handover with optimism. FIFA Fair Play Award winners France can also look forward to a bright future. Though dejected to lose on penalties to the Germans in the quarter-finals, with Eugenie le Sommer, Louisa Necib and Camille Abily in their ranks, Les Bleues have plenty of talent to sustain them

in the years ahead.Coast to coast: Perfectly

encapsulating the tournament slogan ‘To a Greater Goal™’, the eight debutants (Côte d’Ivoire, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, Thailand, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Cameroon) mostly acquitted themselves well on their first appearances on the big stages, with the Dutch, Swiss and Cameroonians all reaching the Round of 16.

Boasting players of the calibre of Asisat Oshoala, Veronica Boquete and Shirley Cruz, Nigeria, Spain and Costa Rica respectively brought a breath of fresh air to the competition and showed that the women’s game is on the up and up around the world.

Canada’s national motto is A Mari Usque Ad Mare (From

Sea To Sea), which is entirely appropriate for a tournament in which games were staged from Moncton in the east all the way to Vancouver in the west and across five time zones in all, a first in the history of the game.

“This World Cup should serve as inspiration to all the member associations,” commented Lydia Nsekera, Chairwoman of the Committee for Women’s Football and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, at the tournament’s closing press conference. Nsekera also urged the champions not to rest on their laurels – while the seventh women’s world finals are now over, the eighth are already hoving into view.

So it’s goodbye Canada 2015 and salut France 2019! Source FIFA

By Dan MarinelliPALM SPRINGS – When

summertime in the Coachella Valley hits, it is so hot simply getting out of the air-conditioned house is a job. The cold, refreshing milk shakes at Great Shakes, however, are a treat worth traveling for in the 100-plus degree heat.

Opening their doors a little over two years ago, the mom-and-pop shop specializes in gourmet milk shakes, malts and floats. Located on Palm Canyon Drive on the Palm Springs “strip,” the family-owned joint prides itself on using only the freshest, finest ingredients; while making the fudge, salted caramel, butterscotch, whipped

cream, marshmallows and more in house.

To make matters better, Great Shakes loops a mini donut around the straws of each milk shake served. If not a donut, then Oreos, or some other delicious garnish that puts the finishing touches on the edible works art. Picture worthy, they are almost too beautiful to drink. You would rather just stare at it – or take a picture and post it to the social media outlet of your choice.

There are over 25 different milkshakes and malts to taste, with unusual ingredients ranging from balsamic vinegar to lavender. Every selection may not be your thing because there are some outside-the-box options on the menu. Like the Muddled S.O.B., which comes with Kalamata olives and balsamic vinegar. If new and daring is not your thing, there are definitely more than enough items on the menu to satisfy your milk shake craving and more.

A tame, unique customer favorite is the Snow Day, with peanut butter, peppermint crush and fudge. Another delectable choice is the Banana Caramel Graham, with house-made pie crust, house-made salted caramel and fresh banana. No matter what you get, it will

probably be amazing - just trust the people at Great Shakes!

Great shakes is open seven days a week from 12-9 pm, with extended hours Thursday-Saturday. It might be hard in

the fiery climate, but if you can make it down to Palm Springs you will not regret cooling off with a gourmet shake from Great Shakes.

Summer RecreationIf you have ridden a gnarly

wave or been stoked over a choppy bomb, then you know: Surfing is a the thrill of a lifetime. If you haven’t experienced it for yourself, make this the summer to do so.

The sport is an enjoyable endeavor for all ages and skillvsets, and is described byvmany surfers as one of the most challenging activities in existence.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have a calm, pleasant experience if you decide to take it up for the first time.

Professional surf shops and instructors are available at every major beach, ready to help you get ready for your first time on the board.

CHECKLISTAdventure awaits you for

your next — or first — surfing excursion, but so does the potential to forget something important. Doing so can turn

your experience from fun to frustrating in no time.

Follow this checklist to make sure you bring the essentials.

• Your board: There are different styles and sizes of boards, so if you’re unsure of what you’ll need, quiz an expert or surf shop professional. They will be able to point you in the right direction.

• The clothes: Neoprene wet suits are a popular choice for surfing attire because they are durable, waterproof and difficult to rip. Don’t forget some proper storage for them when you’re finished, such as a large plastic container or tote.

• Repair and maintenance: If you’re planning on surfing for multiple days, there are some maintenance products you’ll want to remember. Make sure you have a good supply of wax, a spare leash and a ding repair kit to keep your board in optimal

shape.PLAN A TRIP

Once you have everything you need to hit the waves, it’s time to figure out where you’d like to board. Check with your travel companions to see if there are any ocean spots they have been wanting to try.

You also can do some research by reading online reviews or joining surfing chat forums. You can find valuable tips from surfers who are not only experts in the sport, but also in where to find the best waves for any skill level.

It’s recommended that you take a few classes before taking on the ocean yourself. Many oceanfront outfitters offer packages that include a crash course on surfing, as well as an assisted ride until you are ready to battle the waves on your own.

Great summer memories can be made in your own local community — or right down the highway. Save money and support local businesses by attending local fairs, festivals, campgrounds and concert series.

Best of all, they offer you the opportunity to stay close to friends and family members this summer while you soak in the summer fun together.

FIND GOOD TIMESHaving trouble figuring out

where or how to spend your summer fun time? Your city, county or state tourism bureau can be an expert source of upcoming events, times and details.

Find the organization’s

website to see if it posts an updated calendar of events. You also can find them on social media to keep tabs on upcoming events and tourism-related information.

RENT A CABINDo you have a national

forest or waterway in your neck of the woods? Check your local newspaper for advertisements or conduct a simple online search to find locations and rates for local lodging.

You may stumble across a unique bed and breakfast or treehouse cabin that you didn’t know existed. You’ll save the time usually spenttaking a long car or plane ride to your destination, allowing you more quality experiences with

your spouse, friends or family members.

SAFETY TIPSDo you have a long-running

fair or festival in your area that you haven’t been to in a while? The time is now to revisit it to see how it has changed and what kind of impact it has on the local community.

We all know that by spending local, you are re-investing more money back into your community.

But by supporting local fairs and festivals, you also are helping event coordinators create extra jobs, meaning you are doubly impacting your local economy by doing your part.

WATER SPORTS: SURFING

HAVE A STAYCATION

Fishing on a warm, sunny day with cloudless skies is a quintessential summertime activity in America. It is the perfect pastime for all ages, requiring only a simple assortment of equipment.

Fishing has forever offereda memorable bonding

experience between parents and children, as well.

CHECK YOUR GEARWhile you technically only

need a pole and a container of bait to have an enjoyable fishing experience, there are some technical details to check before you hit the lake.

What you need depends on the type of fishing you’re looking to do. Will you be fishing from the banks of a small creek or pond? An

inexpensive spin-cast rod and reel combination should suit you just fine.

Fly fishing requires a special kind of rod that may take some getting used to, as will deep ocean fishing. Research which type of fishing you’d like to tackle this summer and build your equipment stockpile accordingly.

Don’t forget to find out what kind of fish are likely swimming in the water at your destination. Knowing this will determine what kind of bait or lures you will need to reel in the big one.

BE SAFEWherever you go,

understand your local and state fishing regulations. You can bring a copy of the rules

pamphlet to consult during your trip so you are fishing within various laws and limits.

Especially if you’re bringing young children with you, be sure to adhere to all and any safety standards. Children should always wear a life jacket, no matter if they are on a shore, dock or boat.

Make sure it fits properly and the child is comfortable wearing it.

Also be careful allowing young children to handle hooks. Consider using barbless hooks for kids and take care of baiting the hook yourself until your child becomes more practiced in the skill.

Once you ensure that you’re safe and following the rules, it’s time to head out on your adventure.

Looking to work up a sweat this summer? Striving to reconnect with nature and all of its natural beauty? Mountain biking is your answer.

It provides a combination

of adrenaline- packed challenges and scenic magnificence that is unique to the sport.

Whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned veteran, there is an

assortment of trail options, likely in your own backyard.

Take a mult i -day blast across a time-tested mountain track or simply spend a Saturday cruising through a wooded trail.

Whatever your preference, mix in some mounting biking this summer to make it one to remember.

TOP 5 TRIPSThere are countless trails

across the world waiting for you and your bike.

Here are five of the best, according to Adventure Cycling Association.

• C&O Towpath: A 184-mile trek from Georgetown to Pittsburgh that gives a scenic view of the Potomac River Valley.

• Katy Trail: Snaking along the Missouri River, this trail is America’s longest at 225 miles.

• Kettle Valley Railway: The ACA calls this remote, long tour the most epic rail-trail on Earth. It is located in British Columbia and fields a collection of rivers, lakes and mountains.

• Colorado Hut Systems: This route is like a choose-your-own adventure, with options for all skill levels and at varying altitudes.

• White Rim Trail: Head

to the backcountry of Utah to find this gem with tough climbs and a system of campsite options.

ESSENTIALSWhatever trip you decide

to take this summer, don’t forget the essentials:

• Safety gear: Helmet, reflective lighting and gloves can make all the difference in protecting you from injury. Remember that mountain biking can be a relatively dangerous sport, so take proper precautions and always bring the essential gear.

• First-aid kit: Load your kit with small alcohol pads, bandages, tweezers and anti-infection spray. This will help keep any minor cuts or scrapes under control.

• Repair equipment: A broken-down bike equals the end to your day, unless you bring tire levers, spare tubes and a patch kit. Keep your bike functioning with these invaluable tools.

HAVE A STAYCATION

When you think summer vacation, your mind may automatically wander to water, sand and suntan lotion. Many enthusiasts are instead opting for trees, speed and flying.

That’s right, zip lining is picking up momentum as a fast-growing summertime favorite across the world. It’s an affordable, easy-to-do activity — if you’re not afraid of heights, that is.

Some of the most scenic zip-line adventures take place high in the jungles and rainforests in tropical countries such as Costa Rica. The natural beauty of the environment, coupled with the sounds and sights of native wildlife, can offer a stunning backdrop for your next zipline experience.

TAKE A TOURMany businesses offer

zip-lining tours or destination experiences for the entire

family to enjoy. And you don’t have to leave the country to have an amazing adventure.

From the West Coast to the East and many rural areas in between, zip-lining tours await you. Given their diverse locations and environmental surroundings, they all offer something a bit different for you to experience.

When planning your tour, start by talking to friends and family members who have zip lined. Ask them about the best places to do so, but also about the experience itself. Was it scary, exhilarating or a little bit of both? Would they do it again? Their answers may have an impact on your decision.

PAY ATTENTIONYour zip-lining venture

will likely start with a how-to explanation for a safe ride. You will learn how to put on your harness, latch onto the zip cable and properly brake

if you want to slow down on the cable.

Some companies will let you practice a few times on a short line that is only

a few feet off the ground. This will give you the basic understanding of how the zip-line moves across the cable.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you have any concerns for your safety or if you simply need to clarify any part of the activity

natural beauty of a park or public beach like an empty soda can or sandwich wrapper.

Litter is a completely unavoidable stain on our public lands and one that we can work together to remove. It also can be

damaging to wildlife and compromise their habitats.

Bring along a trash bag or other receptacle for collecting your trash so you aren’t tempted to ditch your trash inappropriately.

Take pride in your environment by reporting any littering activities you see during your outdoor activities.

FOLLOW RULESSome areas do not

allow certain activities, such as fishing, swimming or surfing. It is always a good idea to check with your local

land authority ahead of time before risking a wasted trip or costly non-compliance ticket.

R e m e m b e r t h a t agencies implement these regulationsfor your health, safety and well-being. Certain beach areas may have numerous reports of shark sightings.

Maybe there is a storm forecasted for a certain region that could cause injury to people swimming or boating.

Depending on where you plan to relax, there may be protected land around

you on which activities or sports are not permitted. These areas are designated off limits in many cases to protect wildlife and vegetation.

Along these lines, be sure to be mindful of any local hazards that may pose a danger to your summertime fun.

Any deep water or snake-infested areas can be extremely dangerous, so it is best to avoid them altogether.

In June, Boris Eifman delighted us with his company’s spectacular production “Rodin” at the Music Center as part of the “Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center.” Now, following on the Eifman dance steps, comes “The International Dance Collaboration and World Premiere of BalletNow” which will feature a combination of classic solos and pas de deux, as well as cutting-edge contemporary ballet, and will include world, U.S., and West Coast premieres. American Ballet Theatre principals Roberto Bolle and Herman Cornejo will serve as Artistic Directors for the three programs of world-class ballet stars at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler pavilion on July 10, 11 and 12. Bolle’s program will be a mix of pure classical, neo-classical and modern works. He will dance in the West Coast premiere of Prototype,, with choreography by Massimiliano Volpini and stunning digital effects by Xchanges Visual effects. Bolle will also dance in the U.S. premiere of Passage, with choreography by Marco Pelle.

Cornejo’s program will have a distinct Latin flair, including his performance in the West Coast premier of his Tango y Yo, which premiered with Ballet Hispanico in New York in 2010. This program will also feature the pas de deux and variations from Cornejo’s version of Don Quixote Suite. As part of Cornejo’s program, Columbian-born Carlos Molina is creating a world-premiere Carmen pas de deux and will present the West Coast premiere of his Spartacus pas de deux.

American Ballet Theatre Principal Paloma Herrera, who is giving her West Coast farewell performance on July 11, will dance the pas de deux Verano Porteno.

Renae Williams Niles, vice president of programming for The Music Center, said, “Ballet lovers will especially appreciate the extraordinary talent featured in ‘BalletNow’ as the artists, many of whom are partnering across geographies for the first time, push the boundaries of technique and interpretation as they perform more contemporary works alongside the traditional.”

Friday July 10 features Ballet Stars of Europe Program at 7:30p. M ., Sat. July 11, at 7:30 p.m. features Latin American Ballet Stars and on Sun, July 12 at 2:00 p.m. the program is a combination of the two rosters.

Tickets for “BalletNow” start at $28 and are attainable at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Box Office, 135 N. Grand Ave., and Downtown LA. Tickets also available by calling (213) 972-0711 or online at musiccenter.org/balletnow.

••••••••••••••PBS ON DVD-- For top-notch

entertainment, be sure to check out PBS. They have an excellent variety of dramas on Masterpiece and spirited animal adventures on Nature. Two prime examples are “Poldark” on Masterpiece and “Animal Children” on Nature And in July these two fine PBS productions are available to own. To purchase a copy go into any store where DVDs are sold like Target and Barnes and Noble or online at PBS.org.

“Poldark,” based upon the novels by Winston Graham, is set against the dramatic Cornish coastline in the late 18th Century. The year is 1783 and Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner, ”The Hobbit”) has returned home from the American Revolutionary War to find that England is gripped by a great recession that has hit his beloved Cornwall, particularly hard. His father is now dead; his family’s land and copper mines are in ruins, and his childhood sweetheart is about to marry his first cousin. Feeling betrayed by everything and everyone he loved, he pulls himself up by the proverbial bootstraps and starts to rebuild his life by embarking on a risky business adventure. In the process, he finds love where he least expects it. If you enjoy a well-written, thought-provoking historical drama,”Poldark” will present hours of entertainment.

If you love baby animals, check out Natures “Animal Childhood.” The DVD cover alone will turn you on with pictures of baby elephants, a tiger cub, a little bear climbing a tree and the face of a tiny monkey tot. While human kid lets stick around for a long time, and today it seems like forever, animal babies must soon learn to stand on their own four feet and face the world by themselves. For some animal species this happens moments after their birth with no life lessons from mom or dad. Others, like baby monkeys, have the advantage of home schooling by family members or other members in their group. But even with help it’s never easy since young animals must learn

how to find food, avoid predators and make friends on their own if they are to survive after they leave home.

Speaking of animals, TV viewers who like animals and adventure will probably enjoy watching CBS’s new summer series “ZOO,” written by James Paterson, airing on Tusday nights at 9 p.m. In the opening segment, we learn that animals, lions, in particular, seem to be turning on

human beings. The story begins in L.A. as two lions escape from the zoo, killing their trainer and two people within the city. Then cut to Africa where lions also seem to be on the prowl. This highly entertaining series began a week ago, so tune in now to keep up with the action. Animals that have been dominated, caged or eaten by human beings are now uniting all over the world, and their enemy is us!
