The word “drought” probably means more to you now than it did about six weeks ago. Drought discussions have dominated the media as well as activities in Sacramento since January when Governor Brown declared a drought state of emergency due to the

unprecedented and enduring lack of precipitation in the state.

In April, 2014, Governor Brown asked Californians to “redouble their efforts to conserve water” and set a 20 percent water use reduction goal. Then on July 15, 2014, the State water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) adopted “An Emergency

Regulation For Statewide Urban Water Conservation.”

The regulation outlines numerous practices that will become illegal beginning of August 1, 2014. The regulation will endure for at least 270 days thereafter. Further, the SWRCB regulation requires urban water purveyors—including MSWD—to enforce the level of their

local ordinance that meets, at a minimum, the water restrictions required by the state.

MSWD will respond by enacting the section of its Water Ordinance that pertains to a water shortage. This will require a public hearing—scheduled for August 18th at 3 p.m. at MSWD. The four base requirements from the state in addition to

Novelist Thomas Wolfe’s famous admonition of one “not being able to go home again” (he was speaking literarily and metaphorically) doesn’t hold up when it comes to the current production “Into the Woods” now on the stage at The Old Globe’s Donald and Darlene Shiley Theatre.

One, can indeed go “home again” as the venerable San Diego theatrical landmark, The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park, has proven time and time again. The magic that took place at the Globe in 1986 that

sent the production to Broadway has come full circle. Almost twenty-eight years later, theStephen Sondheim/James Lapine blockbuster Broadway smash hit musical returns to its birthplace – The Old Globe.

The musical has seen many script versions and hundreds of stagings by theatres all over the world in last twenty-eight years. It’s considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time. “Into the Woods” 2014 version, is once again a reimagined, inventive and energetic co-production this time partnered with the critically acclaimed Fiasco Theatre that

originated at the McCarter Theatre Center. Fiasco isan ensemble-driven acting company that usually produces Shakespearean productions but was drawn to Sondheim for the sheer genius of how he crafts his musicals and lyrics - much like the Bard did in the writing of his plays.

Everybody loves a story, and fairy tales are especially good source material for musicals. Most stories begin with “Once upon a time” and end with “and they all lived happily ever after”. In Sondheim and Lapine’s world that’s just the

This is the 14th annual So The World May Hear Gala. This year honorary speaker was former Secretary of State and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton. Clinton presented Archbishop Desmond Tutu with the 2014 honoree award for his Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation. Tutu is regarded as an elder world statesman and

leading moral voice.Forest Whitaker was a

2014 honoree for the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative. Other honorees were Humanitarian Sandi Young, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho who founded Sentebale and four members of The Parents Circle-Families Forum. Master of Ceremonies was our own local Norm Crosby. Entertainers were John Legend, Lee Greenwood, Rob Thomas, Jessica Sanchez and Sammy Hagar.

Dozens of sports celebrities from the MLB, NBA and NFL from teams around the U.S. came to support this cause. NaVorro Bowman, Tyrone Carter, Chris Dollman, Carl Eller, Too Tall Jones, Adrian Peterson, Dave Winfield to name a few. Many celebrities also walked the

Red Carpet to raise awareness for this effort. Actors Patrick Warburton, Verne Troyer <Mini-Me>, Quinton Aaron and James Denton were a few among this group that also included a Senator, Mayor, Heads of State and other leaders in the country.

The Starkey Hearing Foundation uses hearing to improve the lives of young and old in need around the world. They have held missions in over 100 countries and give 100,000 hearing aids away each year. The Foundations goal is to donate one million hearing aids this decade. Bill and Tani Austin founded this organization with the help of donors, sponsors, partners and many volunteers to accomplish this goal.

Getting Rid Of The Worst Weed In My Garden

implant themselves next to you beautiful plants are the hardest

to get rid of. They start to kill off the good plant that you so loved and cared for and to get rid of them; you have to dig them out and eliminate the roots. As I try to accomplish this task in my garden, I thought about how our lives are like a garden. We spent our lifetime trying to build a happy existence by planting things in our life garden to make it beautiful. We add people to our lives hoping that our livelihoods will become better, but sometimes no matter how hard we work on our garden; a weed pops up and ends up being the worst thing to get rid of. As we see other relationships deteriorate, we will begin to access why we have that weed around us. Maybe it does not fit the plan of our life garden, conceivably it requires so much time to cultivate that our other plants go unattended, and once deeply rooted become a nightmare to get rid of. Until we

sit down and remember the plan of our life garden, do we access that, it is time to weed. In order to get harmony back, we finally make the ultimate decision to get rid of the plant, just so we and our life garden can survive.

Are there people in your life who you need to eliminate? It could be a person that does not respect your time, or perhaps they want to be around you, so they can get involved with your social functions or communal friends. You are not happy in their presence, but they work at staying involved with you. It is time to move forward without them. They will not give up easy because they knew how to get into your life and most likely had their own selfish reasons.

I look at this problem as one of the highest risks we must deal with. Whether these people suck up time, energy, de-value our reputation, or steal from us in other ways, they do not

bring more happiness our way. Once you recognize that they are a bad weed, you should move forward, without guilt, to let them know that you are unavailable. Replace them with something or someone whom you do enjoy. You will notice that your overall energy increases, and you become more creative and accomplish more. You feel as though you died and now have your life back. If this person is an abusive person, they will leave when you stop all communications as they have nothing to fuel their fire.

Working with the wrong people can cause the same effect in business dealings. If the professionals in your life do not seem to fit, then fire them and find someone that does. Learn to trust your gut feelings and flow with them. Take a look back and review how that weed worked its way into the garden, so that it does

not happen again. It will save your life garden, for the faster we get rid of the weeds, the more beautiful your garden will become, the less you will speak about the problems, they caused you and the more you talk about your ideas and dreams and memories that mean something, and, hopefully, with someone who truly cares about you. Gandhi said, “Live a good life so that you can enjoy it again in your memories.” Build a beautiful garden and you will always enjoy it.

high gear in the past month, and the legislative “season” is a few weeks from its end. Some bills affecting common interest developments (aka “HOA’s”) have already become law and a few are very likely to also pass in the coming weeks.

AB 968. This is an innocuous bill, sponsored by the Executive Council of Home Owners (“ECHO”), which makes explicit what the mainstream legal community knew was implicit. Under current Civil Code 4775, associations maintain and repair common area, and homeowners maintain exclusive use common areas. The statute does not say who repairs exclusive use common areas. This “hole” in the statute has existed for many years but never was a problem, since most attorneys know that exclusive use is a subset of common area, and so the HOAs obviously would repair them. This bill would make the statute say that explicitly, and so changes nothing. If people say or write that this bill is a big deal, they are trying to panic you, or they don’t understand the law, or… both! This bill passed the

Assembly and is now in the Senate and is expected to pass. Expect it to become law, and not to change anything.

AB 2430. This bil l, sponsored by the California Association of Realtors®, passed this year with little opposition, was signed by the Governor in July, and will take effect on January 1, 2015. This bill is directed toward the cost of HOA disclosure documents, often billed to the buyer, and primarily shifts the initial cost responsibility to the sellers. However, the seller still may negotiate and ask the buyer to reimburse it. The intent of this law is to increase focus on the small number of management companies which charge abusive fees for these documents, which are directly imposed on a buyer who is not yet part of the HOA.

AB 1430. This bill would have allowed California HOA members to do what all other non-profits can already do -

vote electronically if they choose. After passing the Assembly, the bill received opposition from the Secretary of State and died in Senate Committee. Apparently the prospect of voting for directors on line is still off-putting for some of our leaders in Sacramento, who are concerned about hackers.

AB 2100. This bill is one of several responding to the current major drought crisis in California (see also SB 992 and AB 2104). It sailed through both houses and was signed quickly into law by Governor Brown in July as an emergency measure. As such, it is IMMEDIATELY LAW. The new law bans an association from imposing a “fine or assessment against a member … for reducing or eliminating the watering of vegetation or lawns,” during a local or state-declared drought emergency. If your association is fining or assessing a member solely because they are under-

watering their lawn or plants, stop the process immediately.

AB 1738. This bil l, sponsored by the Conference of California Bar Associations, deals with the Internal Dispute Resolution process under Civil 5910, and would clarify that either the homeowner or HOA may bring an attorney at that party’s expense. The bill has passed the Assembly, is awaiting vote on the Senate floor, and is expected to become law in January.

some foreign policy actions recently, our energy strategy or lack thereof continues to confound. Energy has been a huge boost to our economy in the past few years. It’s a big reason we’ve seen the fractional economic growth that we have.

Coal has been a hot topic in the past with the industry being decimated by new rules and regulations from the White House pointing to the pollution burning coal causes and its impact on global warming. Utilities which consume a large majority of coal in the US have been forced to turn to foreign shipments of coal.

One of their primary providers for coal – RUSSIA! Utilities are projected to import 26% more coal in 2014 and a great deal of it comes from Russia.

Russia is the world 3rd largest exporter of coal and President Putin is trying to aggressively expand that number. Russia has the 2nd

largest amount of proven coal reserves. Wonder who has the largest? Yes, the United States. Russian coal exports have nearly doubled since 2010.

Coal demand is growing globally. Since US coal producers can’t sell as much coal here, US exports of coal have soared. In the past two years we exported

more coal than at any other time since 1949. All forecasts point to continued growing demand and rising exports.

Here’s one thing this author doesn’t understand. Don’t we all share the air we breathe? Doesn’t pollution from China or other countries go into our shared atmosphere and wind up back in the US? Wouldn’t it make a lot more sense to take advantage of the largest coal reserves in the world by removing some of the pollutants from burning coal? We have been removing sulfur from coal, scrubbing coal and limiting nitrogen from coal since the 1980’s. We now have pressurized fluidized bed boilers and coal gasification technologies that burn coal in a very clean and environmentally friendly way.

Why aren’t we deploying these technologies in mass? With rising coal demand globally, how many new jobs could be created by taking advantage of these new procedures? Couple this with the boom in natural gas and fracking and the US could create hundreds of thousands or millions of new jobs, do so in an environmentally favorably way and stop sending money to Russia and other “allies” who don’t have our best interests at heart.

fall run-up to Palm Springs Modernism Week will include a sneak peak of the Palm Springs Art Museum’s new Architecture & Design center, the first fall edition of the annual Modernism Show & Sale and a showcase of photographs of the Salton Sea, organizers announced today.

Also scheduled to take part in the series are astrophysicist and television host Neil deGrasse Tyson, photographer Platon Antoniou and Pulitzer Prize-winning political columnist Charles Krauthammer, according to organizers. All talks are at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa. Romney, who will speak Jan. 19, 2015, lost to Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election. He was governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007, and president and CEO of

the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

CA – Today; the Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts launched an initiative to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the California Desert Protection Act of 1994. Today’s announcement comes 100 days out from the anniversary of the California Desert Protection Act, which became law on October 31, 1994.

The California Desert Protection Act enlarged and re-designated Joshua Tree and Death Valley as national parks, established the Mojave National Preserve, and established 69 wilderness areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management in the California desert. In total, the California Desert Protection Act increased protection for 8.6 million acres of the California desert.

“The 20th anniversary of the California Desert Protection Act is an opportunity to celebrate our region and encourage support for continued efforts to protect the California desert,” said Vickie Waite, Executive Director of the Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts. “We are honored to work with communities throughout the desert to mark this important milestone. Thanks to the California Desert Protection Act, we enjoy the beauty of Joshua Tree, Death Valley, and the Mojave National Preserve. These lands are the backbone of our tourism economy and make this region a great place to live and visit.”

As part of this initiative, the Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts will coordinate, support, and promote 20th anniversary events throughout the region. The Council for the Arts also launched a new website (www.caldesert20.org) which will house a calendar of events, background information about the California Desert Protection Act, maps, photos, and more. As events are scheduled for fall of 2014, the website will be updated regularly with new information

for the community. “We encourage local

organizations and community members to join in this celebration of the California desert,” continued Waite. “There are many ways to get involved, from attending events to organizing your own. In 2004, more than a dozen events were held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the California Desert Protection Act. We’re looking forward to building on these activities for the 20th anniversary celebration.”

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - In the whitest U.S. state, thousands of miles from the Mexican border, the debate over immigration is becoming a central issue in one of the nation’s most closely watched governor’s races.

With i ts close-knit communities and a practice of labeling non-natives as “from away,” Mainers have a reputation for being insular. But they have also embraced the need for immigrants as the state’s population ages and declines.

So Republican Gov. Paul LePage roiled the cultural waters when he criticized the federal government’s placement of eight immigrant children in Maine without advising him.

He said Monday that the federal government was ducking its responsibility by leaving the border unprotected and pushing the burden onto states. He said he worries about the financial impact if more children are placed in the state.

“If we have eight kids in the state right now and if there

are any state dollars going there, there are eight Mainers not getting services,” he said during a visit to a homeless shelter in Lewiston. “There’s not an endless pot of money up there.”

Since January, more than 30,000 children, mostly from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, have crossed the nation’s southern border illegally and have been placed with sponsors throughout the country. The eight minors in Maine are a fraction of the thousands sent to states including New York, California and Florida.

The federal government didn’t respond to questions regarding its policy to notify states about the placement of unaccompanied children, and other experts didn’t have that information.

The issue has risen to the forefront of races for governor in border states, like Arizona. It dominated a Republican gubernatorial debate there last week, in which the candidates outlined ideas including deployment of National Guard troops and more employer sanctions.

But the issue has also

crept into politics far from the southern border.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick’s offer to temporarily house children at two bases has drawn both praise and attacks from the candidates seeking to fill the Democrat’s seat.

I n C o n n e c t i c u t , Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy’s rejection of a federal request to house as many as 2,000 minors at a mostly vacant state property has left him vulnerable to criticism from Republican contenders, who have said the decision was made too quickly and was out of character.

In Maine, LePage’s re-election campaign has attacked his Democratic opponent, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, for not taking a clear stand on whether he would agree to shelter children in Maine and sought to link Michaud’s views with Patrick’s when the two campaigned together in Maine last week.

LePage’s campaign is touting his policies on immigration, including a recent directive that cities and towns not provide welfare benefits to those who can’t prove they are

living in the country legally.Michaud’s campaign said

last week that LePage is using the issue merely to rally his political base this November. Michaud said that the decision to house children in Maine would depend on a number of factors, including the cost and what sites are available.

“(LePage’s) entire tactic is governing by division,” Michaud spokeswoman Lizzy Reinholt said Friday. “He has tried very hard to pit one community in Maine against another.”

Independent candidate Eliot Cutler said that if a child’s family is already in the state, he supports reuniting them, but he warned that Maine would need federal assistance if asked to accommodate large numbers of children.

Immigration advocates say LePage could hurt Maine’s reputation as a welcoming home for immigrants.

“It’s unfortunate that the governor makes a statement

like that and it gets more publicity than all the positive things that people are doing,” said Sue Roche, executive director of the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project in Maine.

Maine, whose population of 1.3 million is about 94 percent white, is home to an estimated 55,000 immigrants and relies heavily on migrant workers for its blueberry harvest every August.

An influx of Somali refugees to Lewiston, a former industrial city that has fallen into decline, ignited tensions between newcomers and natives in the early 2000s. But Somalis’ small businesses have since been praised for helping revitalization efforts.

charges were filed today against three young men who allegedly put glue on door locks at La Quinta High School as part of a

senior prank several days before graduation. The three 18-year-olds were arrested by Riverside County sheriff’s detectives who investigated the vandalism that occurred June 2 at the school.

Charges were brought against: -- Joseph Alfonso Barnum, 18, of La Quinta, who faces one count each of conspiracy, vandalism over $400 and possession of

controlled substances; -- Steven Jimenez, 18, of La Quinta, who is charged with one count each of conspiracy and vandalism over $400; and -- Jose Requeno, 18, of Indio, who faces one count each of conspiracy and vandalism over $400. It was unclear if charges have, or would be filed, against a 17-year-old boy, who was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and vandalism.

Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Alan Northrup previously alleged the then-students ``placed glue in nearly all the doors’ locks at the school as part of an apparent `senior class prank.’ The outcome

of this vandalism has caused thousands of dollars in damage to the school’s property.’’

Sherry Johnstone, assistant superintendent for personnel at Desert Sands Unified School District, confirmed in June that the accused students did not take part in the school’s commencement ceremony.

Barnum, Requeno and Jimenez each posted a $10,000 bond. Jimenez is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at Indio’s Larson Justice Center, followed by Requeno on Aug. 6 and Barnum on Aug. 13, according to court records.

Always a Board Moment for Sid R. Craig

When Sid R. Craig wakes up in the morning, there could be at least one board of director’s meetings on his schedule, including one of the more theatrical ones, the Coachella

Valley Repertory Theatre in Rancho Mirage. At last, count that was one of nine organizations fortunate to have Sid on their side. This desert resident moved here 2006 after a lifetime career as a successful theatrical agent in Los Angeles and hasn’t missed a beat since.

After graduating from Grant High School in the San Fernando Valley in 1962, he went on to earn a BS degree from USC in 1967. “my high school friends ranged from Mike Curb, California’s Lt. Governor to Tom Selleck of Magnum PI ( a TV series) Within seven years of establishing himself in the desert his name

was in the limelight for all the right reasons. “I knew Steven Ford, ( President Gerald Ford’s son) and thanks to his confidence in my background; I was eventually appointed as Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Palm Springs International Film Festival. I was later appointed as a Commissioner for Palm Springs Parks & Recreation.” Sid also serves on the Board of Directors for Shelter from the Storm and the Annenberg Theatre Council. However, he still makes time to serve the Mentoring Program at Palm Springs High School and acts as a real property advisor for the Palm Springs Unified School District’s Board of Directors.

Ask Sid about the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre at The Atrium in Rancho Mirage and he will tell you about their 2014-2015 season. “ This season there are four Broadway plays, the series opens with Chaim

Potek’s “The Chosen,” Always a citizen’s diplomat Sid also serves on the Palm Spring’s Police Advisory Board as President. An expert at details, he mentioned that with a force of 92, the Police Department had to deal with a fluctuating population that swells from 40,000 to over 100,000 during ‘the season’. As for Sid’s schedule, consider nine Boards and the time commitment that requires. But, he smiles and takes it in stride.

“Tuesdays are an important day; I have board meetings at 11:30 AM, 2:30 PM and 5:30PM. Even so, he isn’t complaining, in fact, he is enthusiastic and nonstop coming up with innovative concepts that contribute to the desert community in creative ways.

Says Phyllis Eisenberg of Palm Springs,” when I learned Sid was recognized by the Palm Springs Human Rights Commission on Jan 13 of this year for “ promoting universal human rights closer to home” I was thrilled. His commitment to the desert is exemplary and a success story for all those who retire here. ” The Palm Springs Human Rights Commission is the only one of the nine cities in the Coachella Valley.

But Sid makes time for parties. He was one of forty guests at a birthday party held at Seven Lakes Country Club in

Palm Springs on July 26th for Lori Sarner. The dinner was hosted by friends Robin Montgomery and Catherine Eklund Mares. Seated near Sid was like having a review of what’s happening in the desert. By the time dessert was served ( it was arranged by Betty and Del Francis) . We were still all ears as Sid discussed some of the marvelous events lined up for the 2014-2015., But that’s another story!

Old Globe Musical Revival “Into The Woods”end of Act One. The audience has identified the characters in Act One from a half-dozen of the best loved fairy tales that have been stitched together into a narrative text that is brilliantly complemented by the music and lyrics of Sondheim. In this show the characters have to be careful for what they ask because in Act Two, they may just get those wishes fulfilled and not like the results.

The Fiasco Theatre Company of ten ensemble players perform four familiar Grimm Bothers fairy tales to form the backbone of the production: “Jack and the Beanstalk”; “Little Red Riding Hood”; “Rapunzel”; and “Cinderella” are the most familiar. As a way stringing all of the disparate story elements together, a fifth tale of a baker and his wife who long to become parents, was written by Sondheim and woven into the plot in order to make it all work.

Fiasco’s take on the 1986 story is to bare-bones the 2014 version with s spare set design and technical elements; allowing the energy and inventiveness of the actors to perform the heavy lifting and let the performances carry the day. It was a wise decision. The production under the deft co-direction of Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld (who also play multiple characters) is

fresh and creative and from the look of their production, is one the actors truly seem to enjoy performing. That kind of feel and energy carries right over the footlights into the audience and is priceless from the producer’s point-of-view. Chalk up another winning production and another notch on Artistic Director Barry Edelstein’s theatrical holster for the 2014/2015 Season.

The acting company performers also are musicians, dancers, and singers, who if required could probably build, paint and decorate the set and they include: Jessie Austrian as the baker’s wife; Noah Brody as Lucinda, Wolf, and Cinderella’s Prince; Alison Cimmet as the Witch; Paul L. Coffey as the Mysterious Man; Andy Grotelueschen as Milky

White, Florinda, and Rapunzel’s Prince; Liz Hayes as Cinderella’s Stepmother and Jack’s Mother; Claire Karpen as Cinderella and Granny; Patrick Mulryan as Jack and Steward; Ben Steinfeld as The Baker and Emily Young as Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel.

A great deal of credit for the success of the performances surely must go to Matt Castle, the on stage performance pianist and music and orchestrations director. He keeps everyone one on-point when it comes everything musical. Together they are a dynamite ensemble team, and lucky for us, are selfless to a fault. Their performances are nothing short of an exhilarating display of individual brilliance within a team format.

The technical team is top tier as well. The set design by Derek McLane, Lighting design by Tim Cryan, with sound by Darron L. West and costumes design by Whitney Locher perfectly match the vision of co-directors Brody and Steinfeld. This “Into the Woods” production is appropriate for all ages. Eight-year old Sarah Shapiro sat next me enthralled with the story unfolding on the stage. Her parents told me how much she loved it. I asked her which one was her favorite character. “All of them” she smiled. A born diplomat, no question about it.

With temperatures rising, a cool way to have fun with the family is to chill out at the movies or watch a DVD at home with a nice cold drink and some home-made pop corn. On August 12, Disney is releasing plenty of family friendly animated fare on Blu-ray + DVD. Titles include: Disney’s “Tarzan,” “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” “Hercules,” “Disney’s The Three Musketeers” starring Mickey, Donald and Goofy, a two movie collection in one—”The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” plus “Fun and Fancy Free” and last, but by no means least, Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted.” And on the big-screen check out, the soaring adventures of that high-flying, high-spirited plane Dusty Crophoper, voiced by Dane Cook, in “Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue.”

In the film Dusty, the feisty crop duster turned award winning international racer, discovers that his racing days may be over because his gear box no longer more functions properly. His mechanic tells him until a new gear box can be found he can no longer race. He refuses to accept the bad news and decides to fly as fast as he can to prove his trusty mechanic wrong. When

he does the gear box burns out, and he crash lands, accidentally starting a fire. He recovers from

the disaster and decides to learn how to become a firefighting aircraft until he can race again

safely. The research that went into

crafting this new adventure for Dusty the crop dusting plane was extensive and kids and adults will learn a lot about what happens when planes take to the air to put out major fires on the ground. My husband, who served in the air force, admired the technical wizardry of the Disney animators who turned these animated planes into believable fire-fighting crafts.

Ed Harris is the voice for Blade, a Ranger Rescue Chopper who teaches Dusty how to swoop down and drop water on the flames. Wes Studie provides the voice for Windlifter, a green heavy lift helicopter of American Indian decent and Hal Holbrook is the old fire truck named May Day. Julie Bowen, the mom on TV‘s “Modern Family,” is an air tanker named Dippy who develops a giant crush on Dusty. Other voices are supplied by TV’s Brad Garrett and Ben Stiller’s parents Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara who play two automobiles who have come to a beautiful car resort to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They go off to the quiet spot in the woods where they spent their honeymoon only to find themselves trapped by a raging forest fire.

The scenes of fire and rescue, smoke and flames and airplane jeopardy are exciting to watch, but may be too intense for small children, thus the PG rating for the film.

“Planes: Fire & Rescue” is not only exciting and entertaining, it teaches us a lot about how fires are fought from the air by heroic

planes like Dusty and Blade Ranger. What’s also fun is learning the back story of the new planes in this film.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Aretha Franklin is jazzed about more than music at the Ohio State Fair: She’s also looking forward to the food.

“I love the state fair, and I love the elephant ears,” says the Queen of Soul, who is scheduled to perform Thursday night.

There may be plenty of opportunities for fried, sugary treats ahead, given that her busy 2014 tour also includes performances at the Wisconsin and Minnesota state fairs in August.

Franklin made headlines last week while on tour after publicizing that a server at a Johnny Rockets restaurant in Niagara Falls, Ontario, screamed at her for trying to sit down to eat her takeout order. The franchise owner apologized, citing the employee’s youth and inexperience.

After some health issues, the 72-year-old R&B diva says she’s feeling as good as she did in her 50s.

She says she’s planning a vacation to New York after her Wisconsin gig, including a stop at

the U.S. Open. She also is taking French lessons and studying classical piano with a Julliard graduate.

“I always wanted to go to Juilliard, but my schedule was so heavy at that time that it just never allowed me the time to go there for long enough to learn something,” she says.

Franklin says she has begun to hear the classical training in her style and inflections and expects audiences will, too. She aspires to be as good as legendary classical pianist Vladimir Horowitz or jazz greats Art Tatum or Oscar Peterson.

“That is the level I want to be playing at,” she says. “That’s the lifetime level.”

Her upcoming recording doesn’t have a name yet, but Franklin says she’s six tracks and five vocals into it. She expects to finish the final three cuts in August.

It features R&B classics such as “Midnight Train to Georgia,” ‘’What’s Love Got To Do With It,” Donna Summer’s disco classic “Last Dance” and Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’.”

Crews Make Gains on 2 California Wildfires

Officers “Looking for a Crime Scene” in Search for Erin Corwin

SHINGLE SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) - Some firefighters battling a Northern California wildfire that prompted evacuation orders for more than 400 homes before it was brought under control were dispatched to other fires, while evacuation orders for about half of the homes in the path of a blaze in Yosemite National Park were lifted.

Fire officials on Tuesday reported good progress against both blazes. The fire in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Sacramento was 80 percent

contained and holding at a little under 6 square miles.

Crews discovered six more homes destroyed by the fire, bringing the total to 19, state fire Battalion Chief Scott McLean said. The fire, which began Friday, also has claimed 48 outbuildings.

McLean said some firefighters were released Monday and more were expected to be taken off the blaze Tuesday. The total fire force was down to about 1,600, about 300 fewer firefighters than Sunday.

The Yosemite fire about 100 miles away, meanwhile, has burned through nearly 5 square miles and was 19 percent contained.

Residents of the community of Old El Portal were allowed to return home at 9 a.m. Tuesday. About 45 homes in the community of Foresta remain evacuated, park fire information spokeswoman Jennifer Wuchner said.

Both fires grew rapidly over the weekend before they were brought under control, underscoring the tinder-dry conditions resulting from California’s third year of drought. Residents of the Sierra foothills fire said they were forced to evacuate quickly, and some vowed to keep a list of items to take with them if another fire hits in the future.

Laurel Fulton, a 66-year-old evacuee, had to leave behind an obstinate horse.

“When the sheriff is banging on your window yelling, ‘Get out now, get out now,’ you don’t have much of a choice,” Fulton said.

Fulton said the fire was so hot and so fast, the sand along a nearby river burned to glass, and she saw ashes the size of dollar bills. She managed to rescue four dogs, a cat and her other horse. She said her neighbor stayed behind and has been reporting that her horse is OK.

Most of the 1,200 or so

evacuees were allowed to return home. Only a small number of evacuees on one street remained out of their homes Tuesday, McLean said.

Fire crews also were battling a 3-square-mile blaze in the Sierra National Forest about 60 miles northeast of Fresno that shut down some campgrounds and was threatening 28 structures, some of them homes.

they are looking for a crime scene in their search for Erin Corwin.

The Marine wife, and expectant mother went missing on June 28th.

She said she was looking for a camping site in Joshua Tree National Park, and never returned.

It seems law enforcement is homing in on one of Corwin’s neighbors, a fellow Marine.

Detectives say they received information about possible locations to be searched for evidence of foul play regarding Corwin’s disappearance.

Earlier this month, Erin’s neighbor was arrested for

possession of a “destructive device” while police served a search warrant.

That search warrant was served at a horse rescue in Yucca Valley — A place Erin, and her neighbors had adopted horses.

We talked to the horse rescue’s founder.

Erin had an adopted horse,

and her neighbor, 24-year-old Christopher Lee and his wife Nicole, also volunteered at White Rock Horse Rescue.

“Erin came here last year when she just got here to Twentynine Palms to find a horse,” said White Rock Horse Rescue founder, Isabel Megli.

Accord ing to court documents, officers learned from several people that Erin and Lee were having an affair, and Erin may be pregnant with Lee’s child.

Friend’s said Erin and Lee were going on a day trip together on the day she went missing.

The horse rescue’s founder, Isabel Megli, says she saw nothing between Corwin and Lee.

“It was not noticeable or brought to the ranch at all; they were here at separate times; he came with his wife and his daughter.”

Megli allowed Christopher Lee and his wife to store some belongings on her property as they prepared to move to Alaska.

“He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, and then they were going to go home, and they had a few days they had to stay somewhere,

and that was a pre-planned event,” said Megli.

Detectives served a search warrant on the property in early July.

In the court documents it says Nicole told Isabella that “without a body the detectives did not have a case against them, and the detectives would never find the body.”

Isabel Megli says that statement is out of context, “Unfortunately out of context, and you know we discussed. We were very upset about Erin being missed, so we made some comments.”

The sheriff’s department says while suspicious circumstances have existed from the start, there is still not enough evidence to rule out Corwin could be voluntarily missing.

“It’s very troubling, because there’s no end, and I knew her,” said Megli.

During this investigation, officers also served search warrants on two other homes, and two vehicles.

19 years; Aspen Mills Bread Company has been providing the Coachella Valley the freshest breads, muffins, cookies, pies, salads and sandwiches.

With locations in Palm Springs and two in Rancho Mirage, the desert eatery was voted ‘number of one finest bakery and best sandwiches in the Valley’ by Desert Magazine.

The most important meal of the day is breakfast, and Aspen Mills Bread Company has mastered the art of the on-the-go breakfast treat.

Some of the sweet muffins from the bakery are Banana Nut, Carrot Raisin Bran, Cranberry and Pumpkin Raisin Nut. Some additional sweet treats the small shop whips is an assortment of classic cookies, chocolate brownies and sticky buns.

Aspen Mills bakes 23 different types of breads that are sold every day. Including the daily loaves like Spinach Onion Parmesan and Fresh Banana Nut, the mom-and-pop shop offers a total of 15 specialty breads sold various days a week.

Monday is Cheddar Cheese and Sugar Buster; Tuesday is Carrot Raisin, Calamata Olive and Sunflower, Wednesday is Cheddar Cheese and Oatmeal Raisin; Thursday is Carrot Raisin and Sunflower; Friday is Calamata Olive and Challah and Saturday is Cheddar Cheese, Carrot Raisin and Cinnamon Raisin.

Not only are their breads delicious and dense, Aspen Mills’ breads are all nutritious and low in fat. The company’s website boasts, “Aspen Mills Bread is just about the only bread that contains no fats, no oils, no dairy products, no processed sugars, no artificial flavors, no artificial additives, no eggs and no preservatives.”

The fresh-baked breads create a one-two punch when it comes to serving lunch. Aspen Mills’ sandwiches are all prepared fresh on their homemade breads – which essentially makes the sandwich one of the best. For instance, the made-that-day Newporter (Albacore tuna) is prepared on Jalapeno Cheddar bread, and the Aspen (Thanksgiving-style

turkey) is constructed on the Cranberry Spice bread.

“I love that all of (Aspen Mills’) ingredients are fresh, and that I can stop in here for a quick lunch on my work break,” Aspen Mills Bread Company patron Travis Roadifer said. “I love their sticky buns, too. They are a great compliment to my morning coffee.”

If the almost-20-year-old bakery continues pulling out delectable breads and treats from their ovens, Aspen Mills Bread Company will surely be around in two more decades.

The Aspen Mills Bread Company is open Monday to Saturday. The Palm Springs location is open from 7 am to 6:30 pm. The restaurant inside Clark’s Nutrition in Rancho Mirage is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday. The Rancho Mirage bakery inside the library is open from 10 am to 5 pm, six days a week.

S o m e s t o r i e s a re timeless. The Chinese discovered the secret of telling good stories 2000 years before the Bard was born and both cultures are still thriving when it comes to telling and re-telling stories.

“The Orphan of Zhao”, at La Jolla Playholuse, is receiving an intelligent and intense revival of the classic Chinese legend that has roots in the fourth century BC. The production is sensitively and deftly directed by Carey Perloff, and boasts onstage musical accompaniment in the form of a sensuously played cello by Jessica Ivry, and a series of violin interludes, performed by cast member Philip Estrera, that lends a nice ancient Chinese theatre quality to the overall production.

The legend/story is as old as mankind itself. It’s an epic tale of self-sacrifice and revenge. In one of China’s many political coups over the centuries, a country doctor is forced to sacrifice his own son in order to save the last heir of a noble and massacred clan. Program notes allude to the story being Hamlet-like in its telling. It reminded me more of the Abraham/Isaac biblicalpassage: Genesis 22.5, where God orders Abraham to sacrifice

his son as a way of testing his love and devotion.

Regardless of its origin, “Zhao” was the first Chinese play to be translated in the western world nearly 300 years ago and has inspired countless operas, plays, and movies. This production

introduces a new adaptation from the pen of writer/author James Fenton.

One can only imagine the thoughts, fears, and decisions that must have gone racing through the corridors of the mind of country doctor Chen Ying, a retainer to the

Royal family, when he is informed that he must sacrifice his own newborn son in order to save the Princess’ son.

Like all theatre, the dark side of human nature within its various cultures hold the most audience fascination when it comes to dramatic moments, and Chinese history is no exception. The play is replete with enough murders, suicides, and mayhem to satisfy even the darkest of hearts and “Zhao” definitely has its share.

Director Perloff is fortunate to have a talented and dedicated cast to deliver her vision of the ancient legend/story with style and clarity. The anchor of the company is the acclaimed stage, TV and movie actor BD Wong (who can forget his Tony winning performance in ‘M. Butterfly’). His poignant and insightful portrayal as Chen Ying is the glue that holds the rest of the company to his high professional standards. Stan Egi as Tu’an Gu; Orville Mendoza as Wei Jiang; Brian Rivera as Han Jue; Julyana Soelistyo as Chen Ying’s wife; and

Sab Shimono as Gongsun Chujiu also standout in solid support.

The creative team led by director Carey Perloff – the Artistic Director of San Francisco’s acclaimed American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) for twenty years – features a dominating 30 foot high, “Jungle-Jim like” scaffolding set piece designed by Daniel Ostling that some of the actors must navigate during the performance. Lighting director Lap Chi Chu provides many mood enhancing shadows and shafts of light necessary to heighten the on-stage tension. I still remember how he successfully met the challenge of lighting an all glass- walled set at the Geffen’s “Death of the Author” production earlier this year. The costumes designed by Lind Cho are spot-on, and sound by Jake Rodriguez, with original music by Musical Director Byron Au Yong are first rate.

“The Orphan of Zhao” runs through August 3, 2014, at the Mandell Weiss Theatre.
