The Court issued a ruling in favor of Mission Springs Water District (MSWD) in a case filed by the District in 2011, which challenged two proposed ballot initiatives that would have lowered water and sewer rates below the cost to deliver those services to the customers of the District. Under California law, water districts must set water and sewer rates at levels sufficient to cover the cost to provide those services to customers as well as service debts, and set aside adequate reserves to maintain district infrastructure. The two proposed initiatives would have cut MSWD’s rates by 40 percent. The district challenged the proposed initiatives on the basis that they would have reduced rates far below the cost to deliver services in violation of California Law. Advocating in favor of the initiatives, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association responded to the District’s lawsuit by filing two motions to dismiss the case. Indio Superior Court Judge, Harold Hopp, ruled in favor of MSWD on both motions, finding that the initiatives were unlawful under California law. Further, the court stated that it found no evidence that the District’s budget is padded or abusive, as asserted by the initiative sponsors. Mission Springs was represented by Palm Springs attorney John Pinkney of Slovak, Baron, Empey, Murphy, and Pinkney. According to Pinkney, the Court found that Mission Springs submitted evidence demonstrating that the initiatives, if passed, would have rendered the District bankrupt and unable to provide essential water and sewer services to its customers. “The Mission Springs Board was correct in its decision to challenge the defective initiatives,” Pinkney said. “Two courts have now agreed with Mission Springs’ position and it is our hope that the Howard Jarvis organization does not seek review by the California Supreme Court and drag this out any further. Doing so will only serve to run up unnecessary expenses for water district customers.” “The initiatives were poorly drafted and poorly conceived, and the District has prevailed. DESERT HOT SPRINGS - This week, the California Fourth District Court of Appeal handed down a significant victory to Mission Springs Water District. The Court issued a ruling in favor of Mission Springs Water District (MSWD) in a case filed by the District in 2011, which challenged two proposed ballot initiatives that would have lowered water and sewer rates below the cost to deliver those services to the customers of the District.

Under California law, water

districts must set water and sewer rates at levels sufficient to cover the cost to provide those services to customers as well as service debts, and set aside adequate reserves to maintain district infrastructure.

Jarvis appealed the trial court’s ruling and this week, the Fourth District Court of Appeal issued its final

decision, which affirmed the trial court’s ruling in favor of Mission Springs.

“The Mission Springs Board was correct in its decision to challenge the defective

initiatives,” Pinkney said. “Two courts have now agreed with Mission Springs’ position and it is our hope that the Howard Jarvis organization does not seek review by the California Supreme Court and drag this out any further. Doing so will only serve to run up unnecessary expenses for water district customers.”

“The initiatives were poorly drafted and poorly conceived, and the District has prevailed. That should be the end of it,” Pinkney said.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – The Living Desert zoo brought some of their wild creatures to entertain and educate children here at the Boys & Girls Club of the Coachella Valley on Thursday, Aug. 8. Nearly 75 children between the ages of six to 17 watched as staffers from the zoo’s Wildlife on Wheels (WOW) mobile program showed the animals and explained their unique qualities.

WOW Animal Trainer Renee Barnett and Coordinator Diedre

Ousterhout brought several exotic animals from their controlled zoo environments to share with children who may not be able to visit the zoo or participate in zoo programs. This program was made possible by a $33,753 donation from philanthropist Connie Lurie of Palm Desert.

Lurie’s generous donation also allows children to enroll in a Summer ZooCamp or Junior Ranger weekly session that offers behind-the-scenes tours and animal encounters at The

Living Desert. The WOW team also goes to libraries, hotels, private birthday parties, country clubs and community outreach programs throughout the Coachella Valley, said Ousterhout.

First, a Fenex Fox from Africa was brought out to wow the children in the gymnasium. Second came an Armadillo which can grow between three inches to five feet long. Third came two Desert Tortoises. Then a Blue-

The Waters of Comfort

Originally written fOr the Desert sentinel

Cabot Yerxa, (1883-1965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

[article 25: : January 3, 1952] By Cabot yerxa

I had a few tubes of artist’s paint, some old brushes, and a few canvases. On a stormy day, not being able to work outside,

I painted a picture of an Indian on a horse going to a water hole in a desert. A friend took this to Hollywood, and it was sold for a modest sum. With these few dollars dropping unexpect-edly out of a clear sky, the big question then was: What could be the greatest good accom-plished by their expenditure? Many things were needed, start-ing in with extra food, clothing, and so on, ending with some improvements to the cabin. But the sensible choice finally settled down to a new well. Water was of paramount importance.

The very first thing every day, water had to be carried home sufficient for the day. In the beginning, walks had been 14 miles to the railroad, then cut to less than two miles, af-ter that one mile to Bob [Carr]’s well. The Indian well was closer, but its water too bad for full use. [The] new sand-hole well cur-rently in use was not too far, but the water had to be carried up

quite a steep hill. Every desert man’s dream

of heaven on earth is “water at the door of his cabin.” So I visu-alized water at my cabin door. . . . The few dollars from the paint-ing would buy a little lumber. I could dig down as far as this lumber would reach and then perhaps I could sell another painting or write something to bring in the cost of more lum-ber. I had written and sold small stories to the new industry of moving pictures then just start-ing in Hollywood.

Covering a big sheet of pa-per with figures and diagrams, it finally appeared that boards eight feet long would be the

cheapest to buy. They would also work out for the smallest hole possible to work in, thus making the picture money reach deepest into the earth.

The eight foot boards two inches thick were cut into pieces of two feet and three feet. When put together, they left a hole for me to work in 27 inches wide by 32 inches long. In this space was a pick, shovel, well bucket, digging bar, and canteen. A lad-der nailed to the wall at one end cut off five inches of the original space, leaving me net working room of 24 by 27 inches.

By Dan McallisterIn the fall of 1913 Cabot

Yerxa and Bob Carr jumped off a train at Garnet and began their lonely trek into the unknown desert. They headed east and when it warmed up a little they slept on the sand. Their story is the story of all the hardy homesteaders who first came to stake out their claims. At first it seemed a forlorn hope, but these people would persevere, and eventually their heirs would help build a city.

Following their snooze in the sand, Cabot tells us, “Daylight disclosed one very small wooden shack in a sandy clearing. Smoke issued from a tin pipe thrust through the roof so we walked that way.”

It can be safely assumed that Cabot and Carr would shortly afterwards be found saying “Howdy!” to petite and frilly Hilda Gray, surprising her as she cleared land with a mattock, or repaired her ten- by twelve-foot pine cabin. It had a black felt paper roof, which, as Cabot observed, “made the interior hotter than Hades….”

Hilda, Cabot tells us, “a single woman of good education,” has only praise for the desert, as she cheerfully recounted some of the things she experienced during her first few months as a homesteader. “Nothing but a handful of shacks scattered all around, too far to see from here,” she told the inquisitive men, as her arms swept the ten thousand-acre landscape behind her. “But so far I’ve come to meet Jack Riley, and the MacCargars. Then there are the three Green families, and Coolidge and Conway and Grandma Riley.

And Jack Thieson, all of whom you’ll meet before too long, I suspect.” This proved to be correct. As well as Mike Driscoll, Joe Baunhorn, and many others who came seeking desert life.

…On a distant fall

afternoon, Cabot, now an old man, must have been reflecting on that morning when he first came upon Hilda Gray, when he wrote words that may suffice for her epitaph: “She has since departed this world.

Hilda Gray was a most unusual woman. She filled a very obscure nitch in the scheme of things, but filled it well, with great courage and optimism. May we all do as well.”

With the torrid pace the markets have set recently, is there anything that can push them to higher levels? Or is another major correction the next logical move?

The markets broke a six-week winning streak last week and that prompted the usual doom and gloom rabble-rousers

to raise their heads once again. It’s hard to ignore them as the markets have come a long way from the depths of the Great Recession in 2008. The global banking crises that lead to those turbulent times have been eradicated. Banks have never looked stronger. Don’t take that to mean that there won’t be more trading scandals and damage from the overzealous executives.

The most likely “oomph” for the markets going forward remains the easy money policies of nearly all the major banking systems in the world. The global real estate implosion appears to be well on its way to a recovery. The European crisis has quieted although a great deal of work remains with many countries still teetering on the brink of the

abyss. Even though we aren’t

hearing a lot of news out of the EU lately, there have been improvements such as England climbing out of recession and better trade reports. Europe is very important because it is the largest combined economy in the world.

We are about five weeks away from what could be the biggest driver of global markets for the next few months and those are the September 22nd German elections. Angela Merkel is running for her third term as German Chancellor. It’s unlikely any party will win complete control of the Bundestag.

What is much more likely is that the iron fist austerity policies of Merkel and her party for the past couple of years will quickly wane and we will see a new round of bailouts for those struggling European countries. There is no telling what impact this will have on the German electorate since they are responsible for footing the cost for much of the aid and have been ardent supporters for austerity over other forms of stimulus in the past.

It’s going to be very important to watch the turnout among younger voters. Unemployment across Europe has been more than 50% for the youngest voters.

The Thick-Billed Parrot also is on the endangered species list and has become part of the

zoo’s Species Survival Plan that is more like an exotic animal dating website designed to pair up endangered animals from around the world to increase breeding opportunit ies, Ousterhout explained.

And finally, Sundance, the star of the show appeared after rattling his covered cage during the entire show creating excitement and a little bit of tension among the children who wondered what creature was inside. Sundance is a two and a half pound Red-tailed Hawk with a fierce look and expansive wingspan. He stole the show.

PALM SPRINGS - A Matter of Balance Fall Prevention class begins early August and is offered to seniors and older adults in the Coachella Valley through a senior center. The series includes eight two-hour sessions for a small group led by a trained facilitator. The class will be meeting on Mondays and Fridays in August from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, each year, one in every three adults age 65 and older falls. This can lead to tragic and life-threatening injuries. In California, 25 percent of Older Adults who fall and break a hip die within one year. These tragic injuries are preventable.

A Major Regional Medical

Center had a total of 3,567 hospital and emergency room admissions due to fall related injuries in recent years for adults age 55 and over. Nationally, falls among older adults is the most common cause for injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, since according to the most recent Coachella Valley Health Assessment Resource Center Report an estimated 20,000 residents over age 65 reported at least one or more falls with an estimated 6,400 reporting an injury in 2010. In addition, an estimated 32,000 residents fear falling and limit their activities as a result.

The Mizell Senior Center Program course is designed to teach Older Adults several

steps they can take to protect their independence and reduce their chances of falling. The classes will include education on fall risks, medication management, vision checking and improvement, home hazard assessment and modification coupled with a variety of exercise programs. The class is taught by Dr. Marc Eisman, D.C., and Dr. Stephen Matthews, DC. Cost for the eight session intensive course is $20 for Mizell members and $30 for non-members.

To reserve your space, call Mizell at 760-323-5689, visit our website at www.mizell.org or drop by the center located at 480 S Sunrise Way.

By investigator lance ColmerMost of us are familiar with

the term “Ponzi scheme” through high profile cases, such as the one involving New York financial advisor Bernie Madoff. Despite the phrase becoming part of the American economic vernacular, many people remain unaware of origins of the Ponzi scheme.

The Ponzi scheme is named after Charles Ponzi, an Italian immigrant born in 1882 in Parma, Italy. Ponzi came to America in 1903 and settled in Boston. According to Biography.com, Ponzi moved to Montreal in 1907 and was hired as a teller at a bank catering to Italian immigrants. Ponzi’s first foray into criminal life occurred when he was convicted of forging a check. He spent three years in a Quebec prison.

In 1918 Ponzi returned to Boston and it was during this time that he devised the scheme that bears his name. Ponzi’s plan involved buying international postal coupons through his overseas contacts. He later sold the coupons in the United States and reportedly garnered more than 400 percent profit on many of the sales. Realizing the potential for

more money, Ponzi began seeking investors and promised returns of 50 percent in as little as 45 days. Ponzi paid these investors using money from other investors, rather than with actual profit.

Ponzi’s scheme fell apart in 1920, when The Boston Post began to investigate his business. Investors became worried and began pulling their money out of Ponzi’s company and the truth behind his “profits” was revealed. Ponzi was arrested and charged with 86 counts of mail fraud. He subsequently spent 14 years in prison and later died a broke man in 1949.

Fast forward to the present and the scam is still alive. In 2012, the FBI announced the arrest of three Coachella Valley residents for allegedly operating a $25 million investment scheme. Ronald Lee Brito and Bonnie Brito of Rancho Mirage and Thomas Winston Moore of Palm Springs were indicted on 64 counts, including their participation in a Ponzi scheme between 2005 and 2012. The defendants promised lucrative returns on investments and used several corporate names to attract up to 500 investors. The

government has stated that the scheme brought in investments totaling more than $25 million. As of the writing of the FBI press release, the case is still pending trial.

Charles Ponzi originated the “Ponzi scheme” in the early 1900s.

By theda Kleinhans reichmanIt’s hard to believe that

summer has flown by and the kids are back in school. I remember when school didn’t start till Sept. So to perk up the kids as a final summer fling, take them to see Disney’s high flyin’ film about a little crop duster with big dreams. Dusty, voiced by standup comedian Dane Cook, dreams of being a high-flying air racer but even his dear friend, the tell-it-like-it-is forklift-mechanic Dottie (Teri Hatcher ABC’s “Desperate Housewives”) tries to discourage him, fearing he will get injured or crash if he tries to compete with world class racers from all over the world. He does have one booster who believes in him, the green fuel truck Chug (Brad Garrett TV’s “Everybody Loves Raymond”). In fact Chug has been coaching him with the help of airport manuals and books on air racing so Dusty will know just what to do. They also elicit help from Navy Corsair Skipper (voiced by Stacy keach “The Bourne Legacy” and

“Nebraska”) who is reluctant at first, but eventually is won over by the little crop duster’s spirit and drive.

According to klay Hall (director/original story), “I think people will really relate to ‘Disney’s Planes’ because it’s a great underdog story. It has a lot of heart and a message we can all use: If we can believe in ourselves, step out of our comfort zones and get past whatever fear is holding us back, we’d be surprised with the results. And that’s exactly what happens to Dusty in this movie. He’s a crop duster who’s never flown above 1,000 feet, but he dreams of being the fastest air racer in the world. He has a lot of obstacles to overcome and needs to dig pretty deep to find the courage to become more that what he was built for.”

Disney animators and the director also bring great detail to all of the flying sequences. My husband, who was in the Air Force, was impressed with all the flying sequences in the film

because they were so flawlessly detailed. Countless aviation experts and consultants were used for all the flight scenes and the attention to every detail pays off. Another plus is the director/writer who comes from an illustrious line of flyers. He began drawing airplanes at an early age and his father and grandfather were both aviators, the former serving as a pilot in

the Navy. Hall himself has flown in dozens of aircraft from World War II bombers to Vietnam era Huey helicopters. He is also an ex-Motocross racer. All of this is apparent in this beautifully, meticulously animated film.

You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy ‘Disney‘s Planes.’ It’s

fun, upbeat and filled with many talented voices like John Cleese who plays Bulldog, a seasoned British racer who eventually becomes Dusty’s friend despite being his competitor. Julia Louis-Dryfus is the voice of Rochelle and Val kilmer is Bravo. “Disney’s Planes” is rated G--of course.

singer-pianist Bruce Hornsby with bluegrass singer-mandolin player Ricky Skaggs might seem odd, but a single listen of the duo’s new CD “Cluck Ol’ Hen” makes more than a convincing case that few collaborations are more formidable than this one. Skaggs and his excellent band Kentucky Thunder and Hornsby move artfully from bluegrass classics (including Bill Monroe’s melodic “Toy Heart” and his instrumental fireball “Bluegrass Breakdown” to an Americana-styled reworking of Hornsby’s 1986 hit “The Way It Is” that is offered up with cascading textures of improvisation featuring Skaggs’ virtuoso picking and Hornsby’s equally impressive work on the

The early ‘80s ABC television show has finally come to DVD and it are the musical performances that matter on the 16-episode collection here. From The Clash’s one-two punch (a fiery “London Calling” segues right into a joyful “Train in Vain”) to The

Cars’ synth-heavy “Touch & Go” and Tom Petty’s rousing “American Girl,” the performances here look and sound terrific. Devo, Pat Benatar and Dire Straits are among the other notables on the collection. Information: shoutfactory.com/.

When Allen Lee rented a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder from Alamo at the Palm Springs Airport on May 26th, he never imagined 24 hours later he would be stopped by three Texas State Troopers in Hudspeth county that clocked him speeding at 94 miles an hour. In “ticket terms” that’s $257.

The rental car had been making intermittent shuddering movements resembling driving over a rumble strip since departing the desert for Austin, Tx. It didn’t help that the Pathfinder was rental car with Arizona license plates and he had a California driver’s license.

“It was a Bonnie and Clyde

moment,” he said, “being chased on the I-10 by three Texas State Troopers!”

What Lee didn’t know, because it was not disclosed by Alamo to him prior to the Pathfinder leaving the lot that the vehicle had a dismal safety history due to a chronic problem called ‘shuddering’. According to

www.autoblog.com. The report states, “This vehicle

shudders and loses power when accelerating from a standstill or low speeds.” The power loss lasts up to four seconds, time enough for an accident to happen. According to www.pathfinder.com some owners are so concerned they are negotiating buybacks with their dealerships. Nevertheless, Alamo continues to release the Pathfinder to renters without any disclosure about this safety hazard.

When Costco Travel was contacted about Alamo’s lack of disclosure they had Alamo service the Pathfinder and forwarded a copy of the invoice to Lee. “They completely missed the point,” he said, “had I known about this safety

issue in advance I would have refused the Pathfinder immediately. So should anyone else.”

In short, this same model of rental car is still in the Alamo inventory. Without Alamo required by law disclose any safety issues about their cars to renters, it becomes the renter’s liability.

The solution is obvious. Before you hit the road with their rental cars, google the safety record. Chances are Alamo won’t do it for you. It could save you a speeding ticket.

“This is one of the premier luxury and performance dealerships in the United States. Under the leadership of Hickingbotham and his team, Desert European Motor Cars has developed a tremendous reputation and is located in one of the finest communities in the country,” said Blue.

“We’ve been working for many years to enter the California market and we’re ecstatic to make our entrée with an asset of this quality.

“We couldn’t think of a more perfect match aligned with our vision than Desert European Motorcars and its stellar line-up of world-class automotive brands.”

A life-long car enthusiast and collector, Blue currently serves on the Porsche Board of Regents and is a hands-on Dealer Principal within each of his thriving dealerships.

“We hold true to our five organizational certainties,” said Blue.

“We prioritize continuous improvement, we passionately honor the heritage of the brands we represent, we maintain a consciousness for uniqueness

and authenticity, we expect to exceed customer expectations, we embrace change and we work passionately to enlighten and activate customer ownership. It’s what we’re committed to every single day.”

Under Blue’s leadership, indiGO Auto Group has a history of rapidly accelerating sales growth and customer service in the dealerships it acquires.

In addition to multiple corporate image showrooms and service departments on its sprawling 10-acre campus, indiGO Auto Group’s Desert European Motorcars features a brand new showcase Audi Terminal design building and service drive.

“Porsche is on fire. There are exciting new models launching this year for Jaguar, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Maserati, Audi, Porsche and Aston Martin. We’re eager to return Desert European Motorcars’ Rolls-Royce and Bentley back to the world leader status they maintained in previous years. California is experiencing healthy growth again; we are looking forward to playing a role in the Southern California footprint for each brand we represent.”

Now that the acquisition of Desert European Motorcars is completed, Mr. Blue already has his eye to future opportunities for growth.

“When we acquired the properties in Rancho Mirage we purchased additional land for future expansion and construction,” Blue said. “While our focus is squarely on the nine new franchises we have just acquired, we will entertain adding the right brands to Desert European Motorcars if the product mix complements the great heritage of the brands we are fortunate to represent with this acquisition”.

Aids Program Receives Grant

Promoting Creative Efforts Desertwide

PALM SPRINGS – Assistance Program (AAP) has received a matching $100,000 grant from Wells Fargo Foundation in support of its annual Jeannette Rockefeller Angel Program fundraising drive.

Tim Hanlon, President of Wells Fargo Foundation, gave the good news to AAP CEO Mark Anton, who says the funds will be used to support the organization’s food voucher program, which helps feed more than 500 people per month.

“I am hopeful this generous and much needed donation will encourage others to follow the lead of Wells Fargo Foundation, which has been a steadfast and constant supporter and partner

for many years,” said Anton. “All funds generated through

the Angel Program help contribute to the $50,000 AAP needs each month to continue its core services. The organization encourages new supporters, and appreciates those members who have remained dedicated to the Angel Program throughout the years. Depending on their contribution level, Angels receive benefits, including tickets to the iconic “Evening Under the Stars” gala. With the generosity of organizations like Wells Fargo Foundation and private donors, AAP has distributed more than $9 million dollars to the local HIV/AIDS community. AAP receives

no federal or state funding, and currently has a wait list of more than 150 eligible clients.

Since its founding in 1991, AIDS Assistance Program of Palm Springs remains dedicated to providing nutritional support to improve the quality of the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. Initiated by a small group of concerned citizens led by the late Gloria Greene and Jeannette Rockefeller, AAP provides food to members of the community with low incomes.

For more information about AAP, or for an invitation to the Oct. 13 Angel Program Kickoff Party featuring Maxine Nightingale, please call 760/325-8481 or visit www.aidsassistance.org.

ArtsOasis—an initiative of the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP)—dispels anyone questioning the viability and growth of creative efforts desert-wide. This effort focuses on the entire desert; it serves Palm Springs in the west to the Salton Sea in the southeast, and the northern high desert communities.

ArtsOasis team views creative endeavors as a driver to the desert’s economic well-being.

“Our creative economy is a powerhouse. It employs nearly one out of every five workers in the region. And, brings, annually, over $1 billion economic impact to the Coachella Valley,”said Len kapner, artsOasis Chair, notes,

Through its newsletter and behind the scenes, it provides both residents and visitors opportunities to learn about and enjoy activities, events and

festivals, created, organized and staged by creative professionals and organizations. It’s an ever inclusive clearinghouse for what is going on, who is doing it, and where to find it. Look to the artsOasis website if you want to network and connect with the desert’s creative community.

This innovative effort promotes the full gamut of creative efforts; it includes more recognized art forms like theatre, concerts and performing arts, the visual arts, such as painting, photography and sculpture, as wells as literature and written words.

“ArtsOasis is a great model for communities, nationwide,” said Robert Stearns, artsOasis president and director of its Creative Resource Center. “Building upon other city’s successes, we added elements

like linking education and training to job growth in creative fields unique to the valley. Even so, we have a lot of work to do to grow both this community and economy.”

The Contact In The Desert 2013 UFO Conference in Joshua Tree last weekend was unusual in that both speakers and audience expressed general agreement that within days, weeks or certainly months there would be U.S. government disclosure of

contact with an alien civilization. In the experience of this writer, who has attended many conferences and meetings about Unidentified Flying Objects in the last fifty years, no other similar gathering has expressed such confidence in immediate disclosure of alien contact.

The basic remaining question for the several dozen speakers and packed audiences of more than 700 participants at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center seemed to be whether the aliens will be friendly or hostile? There seemed to be agreement that the aliens would be humanoid. However, there was discussion whether or not the “Little Green Men” (and women) will use their superior technology to dominate the planet or will they cordially and peacefully welcome Earthlings as equal partners in a Galactic Federation?

Although no vote was taken, my impression is that the great majority of both speakers and audience at Contact 2013 believe

that the aliens will be friendly. For example, Carol Rosin, former Corporate Manager of aerospace company Fairchild Industries and advocate of a United Nations treaty banning weapons in space said at her workshop that if aliens were going to take over the planet, “they would have done so by now.” Nevertheless, my own observation is that no one at the conference presented sufficient evidence to justify either point of view or even whether disclosure was really imminent.

Nevertheless the speakers were an amazing group of people with a considerable background in investigation of the strange unidentified flying objects that have been seen in the sky of our planet for many centuries. Many of the speakers have written books on these UFO’s and just a listing of these titles alone indicates the depth and seriousness of their research. Unfortunately, a detailed reportage of the conference will have to take place in upcoming issues of this newspaper because

there is not enough time to write such reportage for this issue.

Speakers included George Noory, host of the late-night radio talk show Coast To Coast, David Wilcock (“The Source Field Investigations”), famous journalist Jim Marrs ( authoer of “Alien Agenda: Investigating The Extraterrestrial Presence Among Us.”), Richard M. Dolan (“UFO’s & The National Security State”), Suzanne Taylor (documentary producer of the DVD “What On Earth: Inside The Crop Circle Mystery”), Michael Tellinger (“Slave Species of the Gods: The Secret History of the Anunnaki And Their Mission On Earth”0, Air Force Intelligence Major George Filer (“Worldwide Reports of UFO Sightings”), Dr. Michael Salla (“Galactic Diplomacy: Getting To yes With ET”), Alfred Webre, JD (“Exopolitics: Politics, Government and Law In The Universe”), William Henry (“The Light Body Effect”), Jason Martel (“knowledge Apocalypse: Ancient Astronauts And The Search For Planet x”), Graham Hancock (author of “Fingerprints of the Gods”), Dr. Roger k Leir (“Aliens and the Scalpel”) and many more. We will give a complete list of speakers at Contact in next week’s issue.

The very successful Contact conference was organized by Victoria Jennings, Executive Director of the Joshua Tree Retreat Center.and Paul Andrews, a long-time board member of the Institute of Mentalphysics that operates the Retreat Center.

Although there was almost no reference at the Contact conference to the secret meeting of international business leaders and politicians at Davos, Switzerland in January of 2013, the fact that this important secret meeting of the real powers on this planet included on their agenda (evidently for the first time) a discussion of an impending contact with an alien civilization, was known to some of speakers. For example, this writer spoke to Richard Nolan about this and he knew about the Davos agenda item and its conclusion that the recent discovery by NASA of many suns with habitable planets would lead to actual alien contact within ten years

The street address and other common designa-tion, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 78127 RED HAWK LANE, LA QUINTA, CA, 92253. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $641,677.00. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should under-stand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursu-ant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 13-0005892. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement infor-mation is to attend the scheduled sale. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the prop-erty to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $375,831.08. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan as-sociation, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear own-ership of the property. If you

consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. What is occurring in your love life. Relationships, partnerships, marriage are most important now. you’re attractive to many, and if not committed, marriage opportunities come your way. your tasks at this time are to extend a helping hand, restore balance, be cooperative, see both sides of the issues, adapt, all of which soothe your nerves. you must have intellectual stimulation and beautiful surroundings. Watch “The Artist is Present” (film). Watch it. Find yourself in it.

You become more discriminating and detail-oriented. You fix and fuss about these days, cleaning, tending, and creating an orderly environment. you’re very concerned with your health, paying attention to rest, diet, schedules and hygiene. Perhaps you’re also tending to the animal kingdom, attempting to make them happy. Try not to over-analyze or be overly critical. Allow everyone their points of view, ways of adaptation, choices. Then the flow of love is assured.

You may feel a fixed and ardent affection for others. In the days and weeks to follow you might find yourself being a bit more dramatic than usual, needed a more of the spotlight, more appreciation, acknowledgement and recognition. This is good. Ask for these. It’s a passing situation but very vital to your state of mind, heart and well-being. You’ve become a Leo for a while.

It would be good for you to hug more. To hug everyone you come into contact with (if close with them). It displays the quality and depth of nurturing. People are not touched often. your touch will soothe and care for them, providing nourishment in ways not often experienced. Truly you understand being sensitive and needing touch. Continue, when you can, to offer food and shelter to those in need. That’s means all your friends.

you will experience an unusual need for change, a variety of experiences, information, movements and excitement. Leo is a fixed sign with fixed ways of being. But you’re also fire. Three fires to be exact and sometimes they flare up (like now) and your curiosity flares up too, along with the need for freedom. You might find yourself traveling more, on the phone or emails a lot, writing, being literary, telling jokes, playing with words. This situation does not last. Enjoy it.

As you’ve come to a natural starting point for beginning new projects, you’ll initiate new things in the coming months. It’s best to work alone because many new ideas will enter your mind and you need a contemplative state of mind to recognize, integrate and understand them. These ideas have the purpose of refining you, creating a cheerful environment, and harmonizing all disharmonies. Observe

quietly and carefully.

Something different overcomes you in the upcoming weeks. A deep sensitivity and state of compassion, of understanding what you’ve never understood before about others, of stepping into another’s shoes and sensing their grief, misunderstandings and losses they’ve experienced. You identify, perhaps with a bit of shock. Learning of these things you take steps to remedy any distances, disappointments and loneliness resulting from your behaviors toward them. This is a new reality.

You become a bit rebellious. You want to break from the past. You say “I won’t!” to regulations and rules and anything you consider encroaching upon your individuality. you like people and people like you. However, you choose carefully who your friends are. One or two perhaps. Perhaps. you like the unusual, the eccentric, the artistic (people). They help you expand into the arts and the social world in ways you cannot alone. Underlying all relationships is friendship.

Emotional security means status, wealth and success. At least these things are important to you now. Perhaps not always. Maybe not in the future. But now, they’re important. There’s some sort of holding back occurring for you at this time. Especially when in pubic. This is good. You’re protective. It also helps you maintain control and a certain level of power. you’re composed and disciplined. Try not to be too cold with others. You could be at this time. Don’t be.

you’re optimistic, honest and open, moral, ethical and philosophical.

you’re having an adventure concerning long distance travel. You may not be traveling but something from far away is providing you with knowledge, experiences, new tastes, a new language and you feel enjoyment and at home. Something religious, perhaps religious music, needs to be played around you. kirtan, Gregorian or Tibetan chanting. You always think, “Don’t worry, be happy.” OK. We’ll try it.

At times your cool demeanor that detaches easily from all situations can become rather intense, serious, possessive and secretive. you feel everything with great depth, able to see all points of view. Sometimes in love affairs you’re not sure who you can trust and for how long. you’re capable of being a devoted lover. Once you’re betrayed, however, that love is lost forever. you like mysteries, things hidden. you are an art piece – a found object of self.

Having someone special is most important to you. Actually you need this for your sense of survival. you’re learning compromise, adaptability and cooperation. As you learn you teach others. your senses tell you when something is out of balance. During this time it’s important to find solitude so you can feel your sensitivity, which all of us have, but few recognize. Creativity emerges from sensitivity. Our creativity is what saves us. We emerge out of the Matrix..

So, if you’re not supposed to punish your dog for growling, what are you supposed to do? Time for a little dog psychology and detective work – start with these 5 steps:

1) Stop. Whatever you’re doing, stop! Wait until your dog relaxes, then move away, so you’re rewarding the relaxed behavior rather than the growl.

2) Analyze the situation. What elicited the growl? Were you touching or grooming her? Restraining her? Taking something away from her? Making her do something?

3) Figure out a different way to accomplish your goal. Lure him rather than use physical force. Offer yummy treats for his co-operation.

Treats used in a reward based system can be very effective – never condition your dog to become a free-for-all beggar!

4) Keep in mind that stress causes aggression, and stressors are cumulative. It may not be just the immediate stimulus that caused the growl, but a combination of all the stressors she’s experienced in the past few days. For example, if your dog is unaccustomed to strangers, then having your

sister and her husband and three kids as houseguests for the past week would undoubtedly stress your dog. So, don’t plan a dinner party next week. Noise-phobic dogs might be under a strain if city crews have been digging up a nearby street with heavy equipment and there was a thunderstorm last night – not the best time to vacuum the carpets or play loud music.

This explains why she may growl at you today, but she didn’t growl last week when you did the exact same thing. The more stressors you can remove, the less likely she is to growl the next time when faced with a similar situation.

5) If you need help to create and implement a behavior modification protocol, contact a qualified behavior professional who is experienced in modifying behavior with positive, dog-friendly techniques. Good places to start your search are ccpdt.org and TrulyDogFriendly.com.

Here is another tip for you to help dogs. Animal Control reports that the majority

of dogs they find WITH microchips are NOT registered to the owner. The microchip

is registered to the facility (shelter) that implanted them.

New owners are instructed or given a booklet to register the pet via computer then, to themselves. It appears, in the joy of adopting, this bit of information doesn’t register.

When adopting or purchasing a pet remember to register the microchip number your name and address. There is a fee to do it, generally $10 to $25 dollars.

If the new pet owner does not know what agency implanted the microchip, any vet can scan the dog can see what manufacture chip belongs to. Home Again is the main company but not the only one.

Remember, when you move, update your address. The dog belongs to the address of the chip.
