Actor Robin Williams Dead from Apparent Suicide

Update: Robin Williams Hanged Himself with Belt

remembered for the happiness he brought to so many.

“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” she said. “As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Although Williams was a very successful stand-up comedian, he is perhaps most fondly remembered for whipping up laughs in ‘Aladdin’, ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’, ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’, and the TV series ‘Mork & Mindy’, not to mention his wildly successful stand-up shows. Williams won an Academy Award as the Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘Good Will Hunting’, and also won accolades for dramatic turns in ‘Dead Poets Society’

and ‘What Dreams May Come’. Williams’ death came as

a shock to the vast majority of people, who flooded social media with good-byes, memories, quotes, and praise.

In a statement, President Obama called the comedian “one of a kind... He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets.”

The actor may have been best-known to us through his public life, but Williams’ warmth as a father shared a moment in the spotlight the day he passed. His final tweet and post on Instagram reads as a Happy Birthday wish to his daughter Zelda, accompanied by a picture of Williams holding her as a baby in his arms. Source RT

By PAUL ELIASAssociated Press

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) - Authorities detailed Robin Williams’ final moments

Tuesday, saying the actor and comedian hanged himself with a belt in his San Francisco Bay Area home.

Marin County Sheriff’s

Lt. Keith Boyd said Williams was last seen alive by his wife Sunday night when she went to bed. She woke up the next morning and left,

thinking he was still asleep.Short ly after that,

Williams’ personal assistant came to the Tiburon home and became concerned when Williams failed to respond to knocks at a door. The assistant found the 63-year-old actor dead in a bedroom and called police.

Boyd said all evidence indicates Williams, star of “Good Will Hunting,” ‘’Mrs. Doubtfire,” ‘’Good Morning, Vietnam” and dozens of other films, took his own life. But he said a final ruling will be made once toxicology reports and interviews with witnesses are complete.

The condition of the body indicated Williams had been dead for at least several hours, Boyd said. Williams also had superficial cuts on his wrist, and a pocketknife was found nearby.

Wil l iams had been seeking treatment for depression, Boyd said. He would not say whether the actor left a suicide note.

“We still have people we want to speak with so there is some information we’re going to withhold,” Boyd said. “We’re not discussing the note or a note at this point as the investigation is ongoing.”

It was no secret that the Oscar-winning actor had suffered for years from periodic bouts of substance abuse and depression - he made reference to it himself in his comedy routines. Just last month, Williams announced he was returning to a

12-step treatment program.When he sought

treatment in 2006 after a relapse that followed 20 years of sobriety, he joked about falling off the wagon: “I went to rehab in wine country to keep my options open.”

Likewise, when word spread about his struggles with drugs in the early 1980s, Williams responded with a joke that for a time became a catchphrase for his generation’s recreational drug use: “Cocaine is God’s way of telling you you are making too much money.”

Word that he had killed himself left neighbors in Tiburon equally stunned and grief-stricken. Williams had lived in the quiet, waterfront neighborhood for eight years, according to neighbors.

Noreen Nieder said Williams was a friendly neighbor who always said hello and engaged in small talk. Nieder said she wasn’t close to Williams and his family, but she still felt comfortable enough to approach him and ask him about his latest stint in drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

“He was very open about it,” Nieder said. “He told me he was doing well.”

Makeshift memorials of flowers and notes popped up around the country including on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, his Tiburon home and outside the house where the ‘80s sitcom “Mork &Mindy” was set in Boulder, Colorado. Source: KMIR

Evaluating the Cost of your Financial Plan

HOA Homefront – Is Ours A CID, The Small Association

By Janice GoughMany clients do not sit

down and calculate the fees they pay each year for their

investments, and many times when they do, they realize the real return off investment is significantly less than their quarterly report reveals and sometimes that they realize that they have lost money.

A broker-dealer is a wire house which most risk advisors work under. Some of these are Charles Schwab, LPL, or Wells Fargo Advisors. Every Broker –dealer in America can produce a grid that shows how the advisor will benefit from conversion to a fee arrangement. It is better for the Broker-Dealer and for the advisor, but it is not better for a client who paid for different arrangement years ago. These clients are referred to as Legacy clients. They paid a high front end load when they purchase

the investment (3 percent or more), however, their on-going costs are significantly less (as low as 25 basis point or 1/4th of one percent). Converting a client to a fee-based arrangement in which their ongoing fees range from one to two per cent, will, obviously, cost a Legacy client much more.

What does a client get in return for the fees they pay? Hopefully they are getting professional advice and ongoing reviews of their investments. Commissions do not always promulgate ongoing advice. Up front, sales charges can be hefty and the client has that much less money working for him from day one. Even though fees are reduced on subsequent years, the risk involved is the need to

sell a non performing fund early, or losing the advisor who made that commission. A client is then faced with finding an advisor who will take over your account for a quarter of one percent, or your account could be assigned to a new advisor with much less knowledge. Advisors who do a good job for you deserve the fees paid to them. It is important to consider that ongoing fees mean ongoing service, and you have an advisor that has some skin in the game and will consult with you when needed.

Problems to be aware of, in regard to fees, are double dipping and including investments, which require no management, such as a bond. The term double-dipping means that some advisors are

collecting on-going fees for the overall portfolio and charging commissions on every trade.

Most safe investments, such as annuities, CDs, or REITS also have fees; however, most are not collected upfront. These investments are calculated by the time frame one must own it without incurring a penalty for cancelling it early. Those penalties or fees are collected on early cancellation.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCALDear Kelly:

I live in a stock cooperative mobile home park. Do we come under the California HOA laws? If not how can we change to come under the California HOA laws. We do abide by the HOA board election Laws. I would appreciate any help regarding this issue.

Thank you, J.D., Chino Hills

Dear J.D.:To fall under the Davis-Stirling

Common Interest Development Act, an association must be a “common interest development” with at least some residences. A “common interest development” (aka “CID”) per Civil Code 4200 means the association is either a planned development, condominium, stock cooperative or community apartment (see Column #100 for more on this) with a recorded declaration and final map or condominium plan, and membership coupled with an ownership in common area and/or automatic membership.

I frequently receive this question from mobile home park residents, but unless you own the land under your home and there are recorded covenants affecting you, your park is not a CID governed by the CID Act. However, you all can voluntarily follow the law if you all choose.

Thanks for your question, Kelly

Dear Mr. Richardson:Saw your column in our

paper. Hope you have an answer to the following.

We are a small community (of less than 30 homes). For over 35 years we have governed our affairs according to CC&Rs created by the builder. Enter the Davis-Stirling Act. Our assessment has doubled. We now have legal, consultant and management costs to assist us to comply. Our current Board is so concerned of doing something that is not in accordance with the Act that we find ourselves arguing over details that never existed before. People have quit coming to meetings; there is a rancor now that pits board against homeowners.

I can understand the need for a layer of government intrusion for large associations, but I fail to see any benefit for small subdivisions like us, it is onerous to say the least.

Is there something we are missing? Have we no recourse but to wade through 84 pages of details that have done nothing to help the process?

J.B., Orange

Dear J.B.:The Davis-Stirling CID Act

is a “one size fits all” law, but associations do not come in one size. The Act becomes longer and more complicated each year, meaning that even the small associations should have a professional manager and a lawyer to help them comply with the various legal requirements.

Bluntly, some requirements are unreasonable for small associations. For example, why should a ten member HOA have ballots in sealed envelopes, with inspectors of election, and 30 day notification? Why cannot they just have a voice vote or vote of acclamation to elect directors? Because the law prohibits it!

One association board told me recently that they did worry about the CID Act or their governing documents on most matters. “We get along, and do things by agreement”, I was told. That works until one homeowner begins to disagree- and then it all will cave in when all the various illegalities are revealed.

Small associations should require their directors to join the local Community Associations Institute (CAI) Chapter and attend at least 3 hours of board training seminars per year. That will not guarantee you have everything right, but it will improve things.

Thanks, Kelly

He possesses a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Management from the University of Redlands, and a Master of Public Administration from the University of San Francisco. Chief Maynard is a Graduate of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training, Command College, and the prestigious Los Angeles Police Department’s West Point Leadership Graduate Program.

He has served as the Area Representative for the California Police Chiefs Association and as President of the Marin County Police Chiefs’ Association.

Chief Maynard also served as the Assistant Town Manager for the Town of San Anselmo. His years of service include:

• Reserve Police Officer, City of Fountain Valley 1979-1981

• Police Officer, City of Stanton 1981-1983

• Police Officer, City of Orange 1983-1984

• Police Officer, City of Cathedral City 1984-1988

• Lieutenant, City of Cathedral City 1995-1996

• Captain, City of Yuba City 1996-2000

• Chief of Police, Town of San Anselmo 2000-2012

Chief Maynard resides in La Quinta, California, with his wife of 33 years, Janice.

Mayor Adam Sanchez said, “Chief Maynard brings the

wealth, knowledge and the type of expertise we need to lead the Police Department, especially during this fiscal crisis we are currently in.”

By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs,

California – Desert Hot Springs Mayor Adam Sanchez, Sr, is a very busy man, but he is making time for the second time in two years to participate in the “Disaster Survival Workshop” presented by Carol Camelot, owner of Disaster Survival Training.

“It’s an incredible class. Not only is Carol an excellent communicator and instructor, but the topics are explained in considerable detail,” said Mayor Sanchez. “In the Coachella Valley, we always face the threat of earthquakes, power outages, and strong winds—but now the global community could be facing Ebola. I need to learn quickly about this new threat, which Carol stated will be covered along with pandemics in her class.”

Also a student is Mayor Pro Temp Russell Betts of Desert Hot Springs, who was in Sanchez’s class along with Robert Misner, owner of RENSIM Internet Café in Desert Hot Springs. In his class

evaluation, Betts wrote, “Fast moving, interesting course. I have a much better understanding of how woefully unprepared I am for a disaster but now have the information to correct that.”

“There’s more to survival than being a camper or a Boy Scout,” says Camelot. “This is why I created in 1999 an intensive four-hour class to provide the bigger picture of various disaster scenarios.”

Among the many topics presented in the class are earthquake preparedness and survival; nuclear, biological, chemical and electromagnetic pulse attacks; emotional and physical stress; water needs, storage and purification; trash and sanitation; food and water, and evacuation.

The guide “Six Principles of Disaster Readiness” is also part of the curriculum and has been presented by Camelot since 2001 at hundreds of service club, company and nonprofit organization meetings. She developed the principles to raise the conscious awareness of the

public to a higher level than just thinking supplies are all that is needed to survive a major disaster.

“When Carol asked me to help with this class as workshop coordinator, I was eager because a review of the class material is definitely not a waste of my time—and it’s important to learn about Ebola,” said Misner.

Camelot served as chairperson from 1997-1998 for Neighborhood Emergency Service Teams (NEST), a city-wide citizen organization affiliated with the Cathedral City Fire Department and has been in the disaster readiness field for over two decades. Camelot is also a member of American Rescue Team International and National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

Class date is Saturday, August 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. $99 per person. Preregistration is required and must be received by August 18. For information and to reserve, please call (760) 409-6350.

Brian Wilson And Al Jardine Kick Off Labor Day Weekend

By Desert Star StaffThe Information Age has

moved society into a 24/7 electronic environment that exposes us to harmful light

pollution every day. New research is illuminating the dangers of “blue light,” a high-energy wavelength of light that can disrupt the sleep cycle

and cause damage to the eyes over time.KNoW tHE PRoBLEm

Major university studies have shown that blue

light can disrupt the ability to fall asleep, interfering with circadian rhythms by suppressing the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates waking and sleeping. Chronically shifted circadian rhythms have been linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Unlike most wavelengths of light, blue light can penetrate deep inside the tissue layers of one’s eyes causing a greater risk for diseases like macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness for those over 55.

Children are especially vulnerable to macular damage and sleep disruption. Just as most ultraviolet exposure occurs before 18 years of age, the effects of blue light exposure are also more intense in children since they lack the protective pigments of adults.

“K ids these days essentially grow up looking at a screen,” says Dr. Matt Alpert, a VSP Vision Care optometrist. “There is a growing concern among eye doctors that we’re going to start seeing long-term damage much earlier in life than ever before.”KNoW tHE SoLutIoN

Blue light is everywhere. It`s emitted from the sun,

fluorescent lights, and the screens of tablets, phones, TVs and computers. The problem lies with an increasing use of technology without protection.

Luckily, new advances in protective eyewear have arrived just in time to filter out the harmful blue light before it reaches your eyes. For example, UNITY lenses are available with blue light protection to do just that. The good thing is that these lenses don’t distort color and actually relax the eyes. More information can be found at www.UnityLenses.com.

Sleep and vision are essential aspects of total health. Decreasing blue light exposure in the evenings can help avoid the unintended health consequences of our modern lifestyles. Mitigating your exposure to blue light can mean turning off the TV at mealtime instead of before (or in) bed, and wearing protective eyewear at the office or at home when using your digital devices.

Limiting your screen time is best, but if your occupation requires a lot of computer use, remember to wear lenses that offer blue light protection. And for health’s sake, try to get some sleep! (StatePoint)

By Desert Star StaffWhether you’re a

homeowner or a renter, savvy approaches to running your home can save you money according to house smart experts.

These simple tips from Homes.com, a leading online real estate destination, and sister site, ForRent.com, won’t take much time or effort to execute.

• P r o g r a m m a b l e Thermostats: Avai lable for about $50-$100, programmable or “smart” thermostats can save hundreds of dollars yearly on electricity bills, taking the guesswork out of finding a comfortable temperature for your home. Some models even come equipped with Wi-Fi so you can turn down the thermostat remotely.

• Low-Flow Shower: Don’t wash money down the drain. By taking the environmentally friendly step of replacing outdated showerheads with new low-flow models, you can reduce your water use in the shower by 25 to 60 percent, as well as increase hot water efficiency, according to Energy Department statistics.

• Extra Payment: Over the course of a 30-year loan, one additional mortgage payment

yearly can save thousands on annual interest payments.

• Unplug: Many gadgets and appliances consume power even when turned off, a phenomenon known as “phantom power.” Unplug or use a smart power strip to save an estimated five to ten percent on electric.

• House Plants: With air pollution levels increasing, improving indoor air quality is important. But air purifiers can cost hundreds of dollars. Consider houseplants to remove toxins from the air and add color, warmth and comfort.

• Dodge the Draft: As a house ages, hot and cold air from outside often creeps in. Weatherproofing is an inexpensive, simple task that can save up to 15 percent on heating and cooling costs. There are a variety of weatherproofing products, including v strip, felt, and foam tape. Research what your home needs. You can also get a home energy audit to discover ways to improve your home’s interior quality.

• D o - i t - Yo u r s e l f : Redecorating can make a home feel new. However, professionals often come with a hefty price tag, so use online resources to jump on the DIY

bandwagon or check out free DIY workshops at hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s.

• Ceiling Fans: An air conditioner uses 3,500 watts of energy, while a ceiling fan only uses 60 watts. Ceiling fans can even be useful during winter. Set the fan to run clockwise and the reverse motion will push warm air down from the ceiling.

• Shop Your Home: Before buying new home accessories, look for budget-friendly tweaks you can make. Rearrange furniture and lighting to change the feel of any space or switch decorations between rooms to make both feel different.

• Laundry: Consider washing most clothes (except towels and linens) in cold water. Use the dryer efficiently by filling but not overfilling the machine. Some energy-efficient appliances can qualify your family for an additional tax credit.

Ten Tips to Save Money Inside Your Home

Four Tips for Growing Your Small Business

By Desert Star Staff Desp i te the t ime

commitment and financial investment that come with the territory, more than 25 million people nationwide have opted to start a microbusiness – a company with five or fewer employees.

One in every 10 Americans works in a microbusiness, according to the Sam’s Club/

Gallup Microbusiness Tracker, a quarterly survey of more than 850 microbusiness owners that provides insights into their economic and emotional concerns. The Sam’s Club survey indicates that women are opening 46 percent of today’s Main Street businesses – from restaurants to daycare centers – far greater than the number of women owned businesses that

are over 20 years old.“I’ve never worked harder in

my life or felt more rewarded,” says Molly Beasley of Fairhope, Alabama, owner of Give a Dog a Bone, a Do-It-Yourself dog washing company. “This business is my passion. There’s a lot of satisfaction in knowing you are providing a valuable, affordable service in your community.”

After more than two years

working 20 to 40 hours a week at a DIY dog wash in California, Beasley relocated to Alabama and found herself dreaming about opening her own dog wash. Eventually, she decided the timing was right to take the entrepreneurial leap and she hasn’t looked back. Since launching Give a Dog a Bone in 2012, Beasley caters to customers Monday through Sunday and spends her downtime thinking about ways to grow the bottom line.

I ndeed , g rowth i n microbusinesses has been driven largely by high personal sacrifice yet overall job satisfaction, according to the survey:

• Over 60 percent of microbusiness owners have financed their businesses from personal savings and nearly as many (55 percent) say having access to cash reserves is a major issue.

• One in three microbusiness owners (31 percent) depend more on second jobs for their personal income than on the business they launched.

• Yet 69 percent of microbusiness owners feel they have the ideal job.

Amidst these findings, one question bubbles to the surface – how can entrepreneurs maintain their passion while dealing w i th long hours and increasing budget demands?

Beasley provides some tips:• Embrace Perspective:

No matter how much you love your company, there will be days when balancing the books creates anxiety. Remind yourself what fueled you to launch your business.

• Find Balance: Sometimes it might seem impossible to relax, but devoting even 60 minutes weekly to non-business related activities will help you recharge.

• Become Resourceful: Find ways to save money, time and energy. Try multitasking, such as purchasing business supplies while waiting for a prescription to be filled, or patronizing retailers with special early shopping hours for business owners. Consider streamlining home expenses by eliminating cable or cooking at home.

• Make Changes: Stay motivated by experimenting with new methods and tools. Attending trainings or online webinars about your industry can help re-ignite your creativity and even lead to business growth.

For more insights from the Sam’s Club/Microbusiness Tracker, visit www.samsclub.com/newsroom.

In a recovering economy, it’s no surprise microbusinesses are growing. For many, the job satisfaction is worth the time and financial investments. (StatePoint)

Summer Rain Cools Down Coachella Valley

In your sense of self as creator do you feel you could do more? Do you need recognition and praise for your accomplishments? Are you feeling overworked, overwrought, in need of rest and relaxation, needing a few playful games and a long vacation that allows you to do nothing? Something seems far away but it’s not. Step into it. Yourself as radiant.

You’re driven to accomplish several large tasks. Your awareness is upon freeing yourself from the past and from all that may hinder you from working for the future of humanity practically building of the new culture and civilization. Foundational shifts are occurring. You may want to change residences and names. Careful of judgments. They hinder you.

Notice your thoughts shift from personal to cultural, small to large, practical to philosophical. You’re being provided with a vaster perspective than most can imagine. The crisis for you is how to communicate this to others for many can’t comprehend yet what you already know. Go slow,

be patient, and help others see the world through your eyes. Don’t be disappointed.

Is there a crisis (or expansion) in finances, money or resources? A new value system is being created within so that you can more fully be in touch with a level of knowledge you’ve sought for the longest time. Resources are not only money in hand or in the bank. Resources are also your beliefs, possessions, friends and family. Be consciously a benefit to whatever you encounter.

You yourself can be the crisis for others, which brings about a change of interests, environments, a tidying up or a rebuilding. These call forth a new expansive self-identity able to define yourself as artist. You know you’re a leader. You have power. Approach everyone with kindness, too. Allow your image to be one of glory, love and cooperation. Then Sirius is involved.

Should there be a problem encountered or a situation needing further insight, visualize a light shining upon it and eventually the obstacle

becomes the answer. Then proceed forward into the light. Allow yourself to be quiet. This will vivify your courage and self-confidence. Make or hang new curtains, veils that allow the light in yet shields and protects.

You become the resource to others and their needs. This opens your heart to greater sensitivity. Your moods fluctuate, as you move here and there within different social groups. Be aware that you (can) bring kindness and love to everyone, especially with your smile. Tell others you love them. Visualize this including those you don’t think you love. This will be your Leo crisis.

The planetary energies are influencing two areas of your life – home and work. You’re pulled in two directions – an opposition. Oppositions are good. They point out dualities, which then attempt integration. You’re to bring forth into the world a new level of communication, a depth psychology. It’s hidden, as most things are in your life. Open the curtain…slowly.

Traveling is steadying and

comforting for you. The road and distant realities often call. You are thinking a lot, studying your life, plans and goals, hopes and dreams. On the way you encounter a bit of faith you didn’t think you possessed. Something will be left behind (whatever is hindering). Plan carefully. You may encounter several challenges. Let them surprise you. Write home often.

Funds, finances, money, resources and values, expenses personal and public are on your mind. It would be best to reorganize, conserve, and identify where your currency is spent. Be truthful with everyone when discussing money. You’ll be of two minds – considering both present and future. Save 10% of your money for later important needs. Do this quietly and firmly. Now. Know you are valuable first.

Hidden power issues may arise that could lead to wounding or healing, of you, another and/or a situation. Be aware that you and everyone else are sensitive at this time. Sensitivity has many faces, creating many outcomes. You could be irritated, impatient or frustrated. Notice feelings arise then dissipate. Face the

sun’s light for healing. Be grateful every moment. Ask for what you need.

Use your focused will to be wherever you are with total and complete presence of gratitude. The book “Be Here Now” was written so long ago (1971) it seems ancient. However, that message is prescient for our present times. Each moment simply observe what’s occurring. This creates. You live always in a state of surprise. Being here (wherever you are) now is the discipline of the aspirant, disciple and Initiate. Choose one.

cooler weather is expected in much of Riverside County today, but triple-digit temperatures are again forecast for the Coachella Valley.

High pressure over the Four Corners area of the

western United States caused temperatures to soar in parts of Riverside County on Thursday. A record high of 96 degrees was reached in Idyllwild, according to the National Weather Service.

A National Weather Service heat advisory is scheduled to remain in effect until 9 p.m.

for the Coachella Valley, where high temperatures of 106 to 112 are expected. It also had been scheduled for the mountains of Riverside County and valley areas around Riverside, but it was cancelled for those regions early today.

“The combination of a

deeper marine layer from a coastal eddy, mid- and high cloud cover and an increase in low level moisture in the lower deserts will bring 5 to locally 10 degrees of cooling in most areas today,’’ according to the advisory.

However, weather service meteorologists said the decrease in temperatures in the deserts would be offset by increased humidity with little change or slightly higher heat index values. Peak heat index values of 108 to 114 are forecast.

Weather service forecasters said hot weather can be stressful for people and pets if precautions are not taken. Kids and pets must not be left unattended in vehicles because temperatures inside can quickly rise to lethal levels.

Strenuous outdoor activities should be rescheduled to early morning or evening hours, and those planning to spend time outdoors were advised to drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages.

The weather service forecast highs today of 110 degrees Fahrenheit in Blythe and Thermal, 109 in Palm Springs, 107 in Indio, 103 in Desert Hot Springs, 99 in Moreno Valley, 98 in Lake Elsinore, 97 in Hemet, 93 in Corona, 91 in Temecula and 86 in Idyllwild. Adding to the discomfort of high heat, air quality will be unhealthful for sensitive groups in the Coachella Valley, the Banning Pass Area and valley areas around Riverside today but moderate in the rest of the county. Summer Travel? Expect the UnexpectedBy Pamela PriceExclusive to the Desert Star Weekly

Traveling this summer has been a nonstop news bolt of flight cancellations, delays, rerouting and one’s luggage ending up in unanticipated airports. With that in mind here is an enlightening report from a seasoned travel journalist who took it all in good stride. While grappling with a jumpy itinerary while heading home to Palm Springs from Tel Aviv, he found himself in cities, hotels andrestaurants, and he never intended to visit. Add to that an unexpected car rental essentials to reach a beach resort in Papphos, Cyprus.

Making the best of it here are recommendations from those unscheduled landings. From Athens, New York and Fiumicino, home of Rome’s airport. Reservation’s plans changed from hour to hour. Keeping it in perspective he adv ises,“Va lue the journey as much as the destination.” When your flight lands in an unexpected air-port, make the best of it and soldier on.

ROME: Stranded at the Rome International Airport? Forget Rome and head for Fiumicino, the town where the Airport is located. Check into The Hotel Tiber where it’s quiet, guestrooms are comfo r t ab l y spac ious and immaculate and the staff is accustomed to weary travelers and their needs. Many family-owned grocery stores just steps away are well stocked with Italian snacks, such as my favorite brand of potato chips, Fonzi, countless salamis and marvelous slow melt ing gelato in exotic flavors such as ripe amarena cherry. www.hoteltiberfiumicino.it

ATHENS: Picking up the June issue of the 2Board magazine at the Athens International Airport was no accident. Turning to “Tips for Tailor Made Athens” made spa magic happen for this weary traveler. “I hailed a cab and headed for the Apivita Experience Store at 5 Solonis Street in the Kolonaki neighborhood in Athens for a Queen Bee Facial. This five-story neoclassical building opened in 2013 is a showcase for Apivita, a Greek skin and healthcare company that takes bee culture seriously. The ceiling in their fifth floor Beehive Spa is made of tinted crystal elements that literally immerse guests in the “bee world.” Their “green” inspired products abound, but it was a sweet as honey facial the true blessing for this tired traveler.” www.apivita.com/usa/new/TheApivita-Experience-Store-en

NEW YORK: Finally arriving

in New York and having to wait for two more connecting flights, our traveler had to make a last-minute decision for an unexpected overnight. He checked into the newly opened Hyatt Union Square Hotel. While the Empyreal Suite, a chic urban aerie was taken, he settled for a corner guestroom with a glam view and dinner at the hotel’s restaurant”

The Fourth” serving American specialties www.unionsquare.hyatt.com

CAR RENTAL: Avoid the usual car rental companies out of the way islands when they start adding on mysterious charges. Flee! For example, at the International Airport in Cyprus our travel canceled a Budget car rental when the agent demanded an unexpected deposit of 1200 euros ( around $900). Nearby Astra Car rentals, a local firm was far more accommodating. Paid in cash our savvy traveler left with a clean car at $60 daily within ten minutes. The scenic two-hour drive to the Annabelle Hotel ( a four-star resort) beachfront on the Mediterranean in Pafos was a breeze. “ Having breakfast, here was worth the car rental drama. The house-made mixed berry jams, genuine Greek yogurt, fresh honey, haloumi cheese and grilled stuffed tomatoes with local herbs were a trip in itself.” www.thanoshotels.com

Summer Movies for Grown-Upsf i lm by theDa Kleinhans reichman

“The Hund red-Foo t Journey,” based on Richard C. Morais’ best -selling novel, is now a delicious cinematic treat produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom (“Chocolat,” Cider House Rules”), the film is a romantic tale of two cultures and two cuisines that focuses on the magic of fine food beautifully prepared. After seeing this tasty trifle aimed at adult movie palettes I wanted to head to a French restaurant and eat. “Bon appetite!”

The movie is reminiscent of other films about gourmet food preparation like the 1987 Danish Oscar winner “Babette’s Feast” and the Meryl Streep comedy “Julie and Julia” about the famous TV chef and cookbook author, Julia Child. And who can forget the Disney/Pixar animated treasure “Ratatouille” abut a fabulous chef who just happens to be a rat. But the little guy knows how to cook and he always, always washes his little hands. In fact, in this film, as in “Ratatouille,” a romance develops between two chefs who find themselves in direct competition with one another.

In this latest foodie fable, not only is the menu divine, so is the scenery as we travel from Mumbai, India to a charming village in France, then on to Paris.

The story starts in Mumbai, but after a tragedy, due to political

unrest, the Kadam family is forced to leave their homeland. They first come to England for asylum, but find the vegetables there not to their liking. This is not the case when they arrive in France. After their old car breaks down on a steep country road, they are helped by the very beautiful

Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) who turns out to be the sous chef at Madame Mallory’s fine local restaurant.

Madame Mallory (a very snooty Helen Mirren) is proud of her one star Michelin establishment and dreams of one day earning yet another star.

When the Hadam family buys the deserted former restaurant 100 feet from her establishment, a definite food fight begins. Add to the mix, the very handsome eldest son Hassan (Manish Dayal) who has the potential to become a major chef if he and his family are able to establish their Indian restaurant in this petite French town.

As the Hadam family rebuilds the empty, run-down former restaurant across from Mirren’s elegant “Le Saule Pleureur,” she becomes furious, and soon it is war between the proud French restaurateur and the Hadam family, headed by Papa Hadam, veteran Indian actor Om Puri.

The cultural clashes, mouth watering food preparations and beautiful scenery combined with young love, and romance make “The One-Hundred-Foot Journey” one of the most pleasant movies so far this summer. Rated PG for some thematic elements, some violence, language and brief sensuality. Running time, 2 hours.

••••••••••••••“Get On Up,” directed by

Tate Taylor (“The Help”) is a film biography of James Brown, “The Godfather of Soul.” Mick Jagger, one of the film’s co-producers along with Brian Grazer, appeared at the famous Apollo Theater in New York as did Brown, and he credits the soul singer for inspiring some of his on stage moves as a Rolling Stone. Director Taylor, born in 1970, was not around when Brown hit his musical stride in the 1960s, but it is obvious that Taylor still digs Brown’s R & B style that eventually morphed into soul.

Chadwick Bosman, who was excellent as Jackie Robinson in “42,” stars as Brown and has all the right dance moves. In an interview, Bosman said he worked hard to perfect the funky dance moves and countless on-stage splits. Dance instruction lasted five hours a day until he perfected James Brown’s fancy footwork. With that kind of dedication, the actor could be a great contestant on TVs “Dancing With the Stars.”

While Bosman mastered all the dance moves, he did not sing as Jamie Foxx did in his Oscar-winning portrayal as Ray Charles. However, in a way it’s nice to know that the voice we hear in the film is actually James Browns.

“Get On Up” was filmed in Mississippi and features Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis as Brown’s aunt and mother respectively. (Both ladies also co-starred in “The Help.”) Dan Aykroyd plays Brown’s sympathetic agent who helped him achieve not only musical success, but financial success as well. Their working relationship lasted a lifetime and meant a great deal to the singer.

Songs in the film include “Poppa’s got a Brand-New Bag,” referring to a whole new lifestyle, “Cold Sweat” and “Sex Machine.” Part of the lyrics to that song says, “Get up offa that thing, I feel like a sex machine” which inspired the film’s title.

When Oscar’s time rolls around, the movie may not be nominated, but Chadwick Bosman is most deserving of consideration for his very compelling portrayal of “The Godfather of Soul.” From Imagine/Universal, rated PG-13.

While few artists are worth celebrating via expansive collections, new titles taking a detailed look at Nils Lofgren and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young are well deserving the wait and will definitely please hardcore fans of the influential artists.

Artist: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Youngtitle: CSNY 1974 (Rhino)You might like if you enjoy: CSNY, Neil Young, David Crosby, Graham Nash

Tellme more: Comprised of three audio CDs and a DVD, there are countless reasons to pick up the deluxe edition of the just-released “CSNY 1974.” The box set includes a DVD that boasts a treasure trove of previously-unavailable concert performances. I can’t recall a version of “Almost Cut My Hair” as fiery, with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young trading blistering guitar work all along its 7-minute run. The boxed set includes an outstanding 186-

page booklet filled with photos and information related to the 1974 CSNY tour and is essential for fans of the pioneering quartet. “CSNY 1974” is available via a variety of packages customized for casual fans, audiophiles and everyone in-between. Information: csny.com.

Artist: Nils Lofgrentitle: Face the music (Fantasy/Concord)You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young, Grin,

Bruce SpringsteenTell me more: Although his

gifts as a singer and songwriter are extraordinary, Nils Lofgren remains best known as a guitar virtuoso thanks to his high-profile role as a sideman for Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr. The newly-issued “Face the Music,” an incredible retrospective featuring nine full-length CDs and one DVD, does plenty to shine a well-deserved spotlight on all of Lofgren’s musical gifts. Featuring a far-flung

mix of previously-released-but-long-unavailable material and never-before-released gems stretching back as far as his work with the pre-Grin outfit Paul Dowell and the Dolphin, no sonic stone is left unturned. Notables, including the aforementioned Young and Springsteen show up along the way, as do Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free), Willie Nelson, Graham Nash and David Crosby. Information: NilsLofgren.com.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county re-corder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this informa-tion. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. dance floor got so packed that before Atrak finished his set, security and event organizers were advising people to move away from the stage. During Chromeo’s set, the equipment overheated, resulting in a 10-minute delay. Once the issue got resolved, “It’s so much better with the music,” was a recurring motto sung by lead singer Dave Macklovitch.

Not only did the festival provide world-class talent, but the day-to-day organization of the weekend fling was top notch. Including providing food in case pass holders got hungry, the cash bars offered free water, which is smart and proactive in keeping everyone safe and hydrated. In addition to providing a free and fun shuttle (party bus!) to chauffeur people to the various venues, Splash House organizers also decided to schedule daily activities that catered to ticket holders staying at the hotels.

“I think they’re trying to do the Coachella thing,” music fan and attendee Cody Rabin said. “A year ago, they didn’t have the free yoga uses, this year they had the free yoga session and a brunch, all this extra, inclusive stuff.”

The pools were packed with

some of Southern California’s most beautiful people who flocked to Palm Springs for this event. LED Presents and the hotels benefited greatly from this festival, but the greatest

beneficiary might be the Palm Springs economy. Once the aptly named water-music Fest let out, thousands were ready to spend on the restaurants and bars surrounding Palm Canyon

Drive. A resounding theme

throughout the entire event was relaxation and letting loose from the mundane workweek. Thanks to the emerging success

of Splash House, it looks like the opportunity to party at the tri-pool festival will become an annual privilege. Let’s hope the day-rager returns in 2015 bigger and better than ever.

By Angela MonroeCATHEDRAL CITY -- As

the crisis in Iraq deepens, many people who left the country years ago worry for their families back in Iraq.

Local residents have family, who’ve been forced to flee, as ISIS fighters take over cities.

We spoke with Fred

Benam in Cathedral City. While he left Iraq more than

two decades ago, he still has family there and some of them were forced to leave.

“I’m very, very worried about my family, my friends.”

Fred Benam says his cousin’s family fled their home in northern Iraq ten days ago.

“I hope it will be soon, they can come back home.”

Fred owns Ace Smoke Shop in Cathedral City, he’s lived in the valley for six years.

“I moved from Germany to here, I’m from Iraq, Mosul, I was born in the Christian area, North Iraq,” said Benam.

The second largest city in

Iraq, Mosul, was overtaken in June by ISIS fighters, the “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.”

The militant’s sweep has continued, and now the Yazidis, a religious minority in the country, have been forced to run for their lives.

“They’re stuck in the mountain, without food, without

water. I’m hoping the Iraq Government or US government will be helping soon,” said Benam.

Benam says his family lives in the Christian area of Iraq, in a town called Bartella, between Mosul and Arbil.

“Not just my Christians, and the Yazidis, there are a lot of people that lose their house, they lose everything and just run from ISIS.”

While Benam says the air strikes by the US. will help, he doesn’t think troops on the ground is the answer.

“Not a good idea, that’s going to start more problems.”

Benam does worry about his family in Iraq, and hopes the ISIS fighters are stopped.

“I hope it will be soon the end of everything, people can go back home, be safe and stay safe, and ISIS move from Iraq, leave Iraq alone to the Iraqi people,” said Benam.

On Monday, President Obama spoke, giving his approval of the appointment of a new prime minister in Iraq, and saying the only lasting solution in Iraq is the formation of an inclusive government.

The President also said air strikes were successful, as well as humanitarian aid to the thousands of people stranded on a mountain in Iraq. Source: KMIR

By Jack LyonsTheatre and Film Critic

Playwright Neil LaBute is a prolific writer of plays and screenplays. But he rarely appears on the radar screens of mainstream American theatre goers. Some accuse him of being a misogynistic playwright on steroids.

That label may be a little unfair. They said the same thing

about G.B. Shaw’s take on women, but Shaw performed his misogyny surgery with wit, style, and intellectual rigor, whereas, LaBute assaults his audiences with characters that boast a raw, street smart, approach to the modern man/woman relationship, complete with a plethora of F-bombs, shouted at the top of their voices, and other favorite sexual expressions that pass

for dialogue these days. If one scratches beneath the surface of our ever changing society, one will discover complicated and somewhat pathetic characters that continue to hold a fascination for LaBute as well as for others.

In his latest play “Reasons to be Pretty”, directed by artistic director Randall Arney, now playing on the Gil Cates stage of the Geffen Playhouse, LaBute

introduces us to four characters in their mid-twenties, who are what some might label as border-line losers. The younger generation come off as spoiled, self-indulgent, and suffering from a lack of parental oversight when they were growing up. And, they’re still not grownups when we catch up with them.

The play opens with Stephanie (Amber Tamblyn) screaming at the top of her lungs a series of four-letter expletives directed at her live-in boyfriend Greg (Shawn Hatosy) who is trying to calm her down. Not an easy task. This is a marital squabble (sans wedding rings and license) between a live-in couple who have trouble communicating. It seems Greg dropped a casual remark to his best buddy Kent (Nick Gehlfuss), about women in general and their beauty in particular. There is nothing unusual about that, except, that Greg failed to defend Stephanie’s specific beauty, and when the two buddy’s exchanges came back to Steph via her “friend” Carly (Alicia Witt), all Hell broke loose. Whatever would the world do without gossip as fodder material for writers?

In the case of their friends Kent and Carly and their situation, Carly who works as a night security guard loves her husband Kent. The issue for them is that Kent has a roving eye for the ladies and for Crystal, a new young hottie at the factory where he works. The set-up is complete. Now we wait to see how all this will unfold. One problem for the audience is that these four flawed characters are not easy to like or to root for.

Director Arney has each character deliver their “Aha monologue” in a spotlighted area straight out to the audience. It’s this convention that gives us some insight into the world of these fallible creatures. I just wish he took a firmer hand in the vocal

modulation and orchestration of the actor’s emotions and delivery. At times, less is better when it comes to the actors shouting at each other all the time. Also, there were times when 18 wheeler big rigs would have no trouble slipping in between dialogue cues.

For two and a half hours these talented actors have to maneuver the minefield of LaBute,s, sometime raw and sometime banal dialogue which is liberally peppered with references to “beer, broads, baseball, and sex”. It is almost like being back in my old military barracks. It was tolerable then, but now fails to engage and just comes off as tedious.

According to LaBute’s program notes, the world is obsessed with how people wish to be seen by others and that’s very true. Everyone wants to be perceived as being pretty or handsome. Unfortunately, life just isn’t that way. Real beauty is always in the eye of the enlightened beholder. We can still be happy inside our own skins, despite what the world thinks or says.

The technical credits are always solid at the Geffen, and this production is no exception. The set design by Takeshi Kata makes good use of wagons in expediting scene locations and scene changes and still provide enough space for the actors to do their things. Lighting designer Daniel Ionazzi provides just the right amount of illumination for mood enhancement, and still allows for the costumes David Mickelsen to be seen and appreciated.

“Reasons to be Pretty” at the Geffen Playhouse may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but one cannot deny the dedication and the commitment on the part of the talented ensemble cast. The production runs through August 31, 2014.
