Lucid Dreaming

Before we begin, consider this: if the average person

spends 7 hours a day sleeping, and lives an average life

of about 75 years, then he or she has slept nearly 1/3 (22

years of his or her life away! "hose averages are not

based on any official gathered data, but serve to i#press

the point of $ust how #uch of our lives we actually

spend sleeping! %t&s possible, however, to get #ore life

out of those wasted years through lucid drea#ing anddrea# control! 'f course, that&s #ore easily said than

done! Before being able to control your drea#s you have

to be able to recognie that you are drea#ing!

Lucid dreaming  (also )nown as dream consciousness or

conscious dreaming  is drea#ing while being aware that

you are drea#ing! "o actually have a lucid drea# you

#erely have to recognie that you are drea#ing!

*ealiing you are drea#ing #ay not see# all that

special, but beco#ing aware that you are drea#ing

presents the opportunity of controlling drea#s! "he idea

is that once you are aware you are drea#ing you canalter your drea#s and dictate what happens: you can do

anything you&ve ever wanted and go anywhere you&ve

ever desired! +urther#ore, everyone can learn how to

have lucid drea#s! ound too good to be true, or perhaps

a little too -new.ageish0 ucid drea#ing is very real

and very possible, and there are #any practical and

down.to.arth reasons to eperi#ent with lucid drea#s!

4re you a little apprehensive over the idea of controlling

your drea#s, for various reasons ou can also use

co#ponents of lucid drea#ing to si#ply aid in drea#

recall, to provide you with #ore of an opportunity to

deeply eplore your drea#s, and to even help increase

the chances of you drea#ing about things that you&d li)e

to drea# about6without having control! *egardless, we

are getting ahead of ourselves here! 4 good place to start

is with a #ore co#plete eplanation of $ust what

constitutes lucid drea#ing!

Before Proceeding

%&d li)e to #a)e sure that anyone reading this site is

pursuing lucid drea#ing for the right reasons and also

understands the possible conseuences involved with

ecessive force! +irst off, as will be suggested on the

net page, lucid drea#ing should not be used to escape

fro# reality! % cannot stress that enough6there is a real

world out there, and lucid drea#ing is best used both as

a recreational activity and to aid in personal

develop#ent8 lucid drea#s should not be used as a

vehicle to displace reality! even or eight hours of sleep

per night is enough6don&t sleep your life away!

o far as ecessive force goes, lucid drea#ing is best

sought after in #oderation! 9e live in an i#patient

society with an addiction to and a learned.dependence of

#icrowaves and instant.#essaging! 4llowing that

attitude to percolate into your drea# life could have a

detri#ental effect on so#ething that was intended to

help )eep you healthy and clear.headed! "hus, proceed

slowly and don&t use too #uch force when

eperi#enting with lucid drea#s, and it is a good idea to

ta)e brea)s fro# trying! ou certainly don&t want to

awa)e in the #orning feeling ehausted, thus co#pletely

rescinding the purpose of sleep! %f you find yourselffeeling abnor#ally tired after beginning to atte#pt lucid

drea#ing, then lessen the freuency of your atte#pts6

you #ay perhaps want to li#it your atte#pts to the

wee)ends only! *egardless, so long as you heed these

warnings you have nothing to fear with having lucid

drea#s: lucid drea#ing is co#pletely safe if used

responsibly!

Definition

"here is nothing inherently difficult to understand about

the concept of lucid drea#ing: as stated in the

introduction, lucid drea#ing is si#ply drea#ing while

being aware you are drea#ing! ou can thin) of lucid

drea#ing as being conscious while drea#ing! %f, by

chance, during a drea# it suddenly dawns on you that

you are drea#ing, then you have eperienced a lucid

drea#, regardless of whether you have been able to

attain control of your drea#! ucid drea#ing is usually

induced  by so#e sort of cue 6so#ething that indicates

to the person that what he or she is eperiencing is adrea#, and not reality! ues, however, are not necessary

for beco#ing lucid: so#eti#es people spontaneously

beco#e lucid without noticing anything strange or

typical of drea#s! ucid drea#ing is a very si#ple

concept but for #ost it will ta)e patience and

deter#ination to achieve!

;any people see# ignorant of the distinction between

having a lucid drea#, and controlling a drea#! Being

able to freely control one&s drea# does not directly

follow beco#ing lucid: one can have a lucid drea#

without any control whatsoever! ontrolling your drea#

is si#ply proceeding to the net level, by atte#pting to

eert your will upon your surroundings!

Misconceptions

ince lucid drea#ing is a relatively un)nown

 pheno#enon, there are a nu#ber of #isconceptions that

enco#pass it:

 Lucid dreaming is new-ageish

4s stated in the introduction, #any people when first

introduced to the concept dis#iss it as being biarre and

too -new.ageish!0 %n reality, lucid drea#ing is whatever

you want it to be6because, after all, they are your

drea#s6and does not necessarily fall under the stig#aof -new.age!0 "his site offers a very practical

ea#ination of lucid drea#ing along with practical

reasons for why one would want to endeavour to induce

lucid drea#s!

 Lucid dreaming advocates escapism

4nother #isconception is that lucid drea#ing advocates

escapis#! "his site, by no #eans whatsoever, condones

escapis#! ucid drea#ing occurs while you are

sleeping8 it is not #eant at all to infringe upon yourinvolve#ent in the real world! %ndeed, reading a boo) or

watching a #ovie will ta)e you out of the -real world0

#ore than lucid drea#ing will! "he idea that lucid

drea#ing advocates escapis# is valid only when one

atte#pts to sleep #ore in order to induce lucid drea#s!

"his site only suggests that one #aintain a healthy sleep

pattern to pro#ote lucid drea#s6an average of 7 or <

hours a night is reco##ended!

Lucid dreaming is unnatural, involves "dark arts," or is

occult related

o#e #isguided people i##ediately assu#e lucid

drea#ing #ust be a corrupt practice8 this is $ust plain

silly! =enunciations such as this are the direct result of

fear of the un)nown6this site hopes to dispel such

ignorance! "here is nothing inherently wrong or

uestionable with lucid drea#ing8 instead, there are

#any positive reasons to practice it! >eople who believe

otherwise should first read about it before for#ing an

opinion!

Dreams contain messages that are lost with lucid

dreaming

+inally, #any people ta)e an intransigent stance against

lucid drea#ing based on their belief that our drea#s are

trying to tell us so#ething, and we lose those #essages

by trying to alter our drea#s! "hat&s a reasonable

position to ta)e, however, that idea is not entirely valid!

+irst of all, #ost people that endeavour to have lucid

drea#s only have the# occasionally6perhaps a few

ti#es a #onth! o#e obviously will have the# #ore

often (perhaps several ti#es a wee) or even in a night

but again for the #ost part, on average, those whoatte#pt lucid drea#ing still have #ore non.lucid drea#s

than lucid ones! >erhaps even #ore valid a point is that

 beco#ing proficient at lucid drea#ing de#ands

ecellent drea# recall! "hus, while practicing to beco#e

Page 4: DreamViews.com

8/13/2019 DreamViews.com

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dreamviewscom 4/21

lucid in drea#s you are also increasing your ability to

re#e#ber your drea#s, which as a by.product will

provide you with #ore #e#orable drea#s to sift

through in search of hidden insight! "herefore one can

practice lucid drea#ing and still attain enough -regular0

drea#s so that he or she need not worry about losing

so#ething i#portant!

Levels of Lucidity & Dream Control

ucid drea#ing was defined as beco#ing aware you are

drea#ing8 the actual level of awareness varies, however!

9hen the level of lucidity is high you are well aware

that nothing you eperience is real, and you realie that

you have nothing to fear6you cannot be har#ed by any

situations that #ay see# precarious! 9ith low.level

lucidity, although partially aware you are drea#ing, you

are not aware enough to have a great i#pact on your

drea#6you #ay accept so#e aspects of your drea#

that you would not nor#ally accept in the ordinaryworld (you #ay not find it at all strange that your dog

flies around the living roo#, etc! 9ith low.level

lucidity your realiation #ay also uic)ly fade and you

#ay accept the whole drea# as reality!

4gain, attaining lucidity does not i##ediately #ean

you&re in control of your drea#s! 4s we&ll discuss later a

lot of practice is necessary in order to eert and #aintain

control! 'bviously you have the best chance of

controlling your drea#s with a high.level of awareness,

but even then it #ay not be possible to eert #uch

control, at least, at first! 4lthough eperience plays a part in how well you can control your drea#s, your own

belief and confidence is )ey! %f you lac) confidence in

your drea#s, you #ay fail at controlling the#6if you

believe in a drea# that you cannot do so#ething, it is

very li)ely that you won&t be able to!

%nstead of changing the drea#, however, you could

#erely control your own behaviour! "his )ind of drea#

control is #ost beneficial during night#ares! *ather than

atte#pting to change the drea#, you can change your

own attitude! By realiing it is #erely a drea# and that

you cannot sustain physical da#age, you can allay your

fear, which is the only real part of the night#are!

hanging your attitude in such a #anner usually

transfor#s the night#are into so#ething #ore peaceful

as well! =efeating night#ares is only one of #any

reasons to atte#pt to have lucid drea#s6the net

section lists #ore!

Lucid Dreaming #ses

9e&ve gone over what lucid drea#s are and hinted

on how to have the#, but we haven&t answered a

very i#portant uestion: what is the point in trying to

have a lucid drea# "o answer that uestion, you

need only realie that beco#ing aware you are

drea#ing presents you with the opportunity to ta)e

absolute and co#plete control of your drea#s! %n

your drea#s you are not bound by any physical or

i#posed restraints6anything is possible! "he possibilities of your drea#s are li#ited only by the

confines of your own i#agination! "hat pre#ise

creates the i#pression that lucid drea#s are used

only to create our own pseudo.realities8 that is only

half the picture! "here are also so#e serious practical

uses for lucid drea#s in which you should consider,

and we&ll get into all of that now!

Below are so#e co##on reasons for lucid drea#ing,

bro)en down into the following categories:

• $d!enture and %"citement• &ocial Practice

• &topping 'ightmares

• Problem &ol!ing

• (iscellaneous'ot so Practical

Adventure and Excitement

"o fully eperience lucid drea#ing, you have to

re#e#ber that you are not governed by any laws in

your drea#s: you have co#plete freedo#! %nstead of

wal)ing to school or wor), you can fly! 9hile in

#id.flight you #ay spontaneously decide you&d

rather eplore the elusive depths of the ocean without

a breathing apparatus, or travel at inco#prehensible

speeds and eplore the endless heavens around us

without a ship! 'r perhaps you&ll re#e#ber a boo)

or a #ovie that captured your soul6perhaps you&ll

beco#e the #ain character of that boo) or #ovie and

live for a short while in that story! 'r #aybe you&d

$ust li)e to live your own life, with the added bonus

of not being restricted by any conseuences of your

actions! >erhaps you&ve always wanted to tell offyour boss, or push your car to its #ai#u# speed

(and beyond on an open stretch of highway!

*egardless, it will li)ely ta)e a while for you to fully

appreciate the idea that you can do whatever you

i#agine6you&ll li)ely thin) things are not possible

during your first few lucid drea#s, and be unable to

do the#!

Social Practice

%f you have never eperienced lucid drea#ing before, you are probably $ust vaguely s)i##ing through this

site while only half paying attention6you are

co#pletely unaware of how incredibly and

profoundly vivid and realistic lucid drea#ing can be!

%ndeed, it can be so realistic that you can use it to

rehearse for situations you #ay encounter in life!

?ave you ever wished to have a #o#ent bac) so that

you could change it because at the ti#e you weren&t

sure what to do ucid drea#ing clearly cannot do

that for you, and drea#ing of that #o#ent isn&t very

beneficial since it will si#ply instill a greater longing

to have that #o#ent bac)! ou can, however, try outnew behaviours and test yourself under different

situations and scenarios, and learn fro# the results!

%n this respect you can perhaps prepare yourself for

#o#ents that have not yet happened, and perhaps

prevent yourself fro# #a)ing otherwise inescapable

#ista)es! *e#e#ber, we all #a)e #ista)es because

we all have things we need to learn! o#e things are

perhaps best learnt without having to do so at the

epense of others! o#e ea#ples of using lucid

drea#ing for rehearsal are for social events, public

spea)ing, difficult or aw)ward confrontations (such

as firing so#eone, or even proposing #arriage, etc!

'f course, everything is controlled by your own

Page 6: DreamViews.com

8/13/2019 DreamViews.com

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dreamviewscom 6/21

#ind, so in whatever situations you find yourself

drea#ing about you&re essentially guessing how

others will react! learly this is not that eact

because it&s not all that often that we are luc)y

enough to have the opportunity to )now so#eone

well enough that we can fill in all the -blan)s08 thus,a lot of guessing will be done on your part to

deter#ine how others will react in your drea#s! %n

so#e situations responses are relatively easy to

predict, especially when you factor in your own

eperiences and insight into who people are! Be

careful not to convince yourself that you )now

so#eone well enough that you&re sure how he or she

will react, however6$ust because we acted one way

in one situation doesn&t #ean we&ll at all act

si#ilarly in another! *egardless, you of course have

the ability to create si#ilar #o#ents indefinitely,

which allows you to better prepare yourself for awide range of outco#es! *e#e#ber that you&re $ust

rehearsing though@don&t beco#e lost in your

 pseudo.realities!

Stopping Nigtmares

;ost of us loo) forward to sleep because it is a very

peaceful ti#e and allows us to unwind and forget, for

a short while, the endless unrest of our wa)ing lives!

o#e people, however, dread falling asleep because

they are plagued by incessant night#ares! ucid

drea#ing can play a very i#portant role in

alleviating the fear of night#ares! 9ith drea#

control you can co#pletely alter the setting and

contet of your drea#, effectively defeating your

night#are! ven if full drea# control isn&t achieved,

being consciously aware you are drea#ing will

lessen the devastating effects night#ares can have on

you: )nowing a situation isn&t real drastically

attenuates the fear or inti#idation that would

nor#ally be associated with that situation! ucid

drea#ing #ay also rid one of night#ares

per#anently, and #ay actually be psychologically beneficial because it provides one with the

opportunity to face up to his or her fears on his or her

own ter#s, which is usually not that possible in the

wa)ing world! ucid drea#ing can provide you with

the opportunity to realie that your fears are perhaps

unfounded and help you find the confidence to

overco#e the# in the real world!

Pro!lem Solving

"his is a very interesting aspect of  *; sleep! leep

is seen as a ti#e of rest8 it #ay see# strange that the brain is highly active during *; sleep, co#parable

to when awa)e! o#e studies even suggest the brain

is #ost creative during the period between wa)ing

and *; sleep, although those studies are beyond

the scope of this site! 4 possible eplanation to the

heightened #ental abilities of the brain during sleep

is the lac) of sensory input6the brain is not focused

on our senses, such as sight, hearing, etc! "hus, the brain can focus #ore readily on creative proble#

solving! >roble# solving while drea#ing obviously

can be uite difficult since one would really have to

focus on one&s intent and prevent etraneous

interference fro# distracting hi# or her! %&# sure we

all appreciate how easy it is to beco#e distracted in

our drea#s, losing sight of so#ething that happened

#o#ents before as so#ething co#pletely new

happens!

Miscellaneous"Not so Practical

"he four reasons for wanting to induce lucid drea#s

%&ve given thus far are rather practical and easily

understood and accepted! "here are those who sleep

at night and use their drea#s for #ore

fantastic/controversial purposes! % don&t have #uch

eperience or )nowledge in this area, but % will share

what % )now! 'ne of these uses for lucid drea#s is

called dreamscaping ! =rea#scaping see#s to

enco#pass a nu#ber of things, one of which is

sharing a drea# with so#eone else6not si#ply

having an identical drea#, but rather, actually $oining

so#eone in a drea#8 it is so#eti#es also )nown as

collective dreaming ! % cannot say whether this is

possible or not, but there are those who swear it is!

"he idea itself % thin) is fascinating6to actually be

able to find so#eone else while drea#ing6but again

% cannot say whether it is possible or not!

4nother use that falls under this category is called

astral projection! 4stral pro$ection is another ter#

for an Aout of body eperienceA..so#ething %# sure

weve all at least heard about! "his involves

travelling to distant locations without our bodies, oreven si#ply the sensation that weve left our body

but havent gone far! % again )now nothing about this,

but the Lucid Crossroads site presents #ore

infor#ation on 'Bs here!

4 final use that %&ll place in this category #ight hit a

little closer to ho#e to #ost people than the others!

o#e of us eplore our drea#s si#ply loo)ing for

answers to uestions that we otherwise cannot

answer! "hat previous sentence spea)s volu#es, so

%&ll leave it at that!

%f you&re interested in reading about others& reasons

for having lucid drea#s and their eperiences, you

Page 7: DreamViews.com

8/13/2019 DreamViews.com

can visit the ucid periences foru# on our

#essage board! "o read #ore about not.so.practical

uses for lucid drea#s, try Beyond =rea#ing on the

#essage board! Cet, we&ll discuss how learnable

lucid drea#ing really is!

Learning Lucid Dreaming

4n obvious uestion is, -an % learn to have lucid

drea#s0 "he answer is uite si#ple: yes! ucid

drea#ing is li)e any other s)ill6so#e are born with

the ability, while #ost #ust practice and wor) at it!

o#e ti#e ago % got into a discussion with #y sister

regarding lucid drea#ing! % was surprised to discover

that she had the ability to lucid drea# at will, and

always had, as far as she could re#e#ber! %n fact,

she thought it was uite nor#al6she had no idea

that #ost of us couldn&t auto#atically have the#!

#o$ do % start

"he #ain prereuisite for having lucid drea#s is

Page 8: DreamViews.com

8/13/2019 DreamViews.com

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dreamviewscom 8/21

above average drea# recall! 4lthough it #ay at first

not see# li)e it, developing drea# recall is fairly

easy! +or the #ost part it ta)es only practice and

#otivation! "hese two necessities to developing

drea# recall are rather self.eplanatory: if you want

to get better at a s)ill you #ust practice8 if you&re not#otivated, you won&t practice! =iving right in and

atte#pting to have lucid drea#s without having the

ability to recall your drea#s is senseless because

you&ll li)ely not re#e#ber your lucid drea#s upon

wa)ing! 4lso, learning drea# recall will aid in both

your atte#pts to induce lucidity and to control your

drea#s because you will have developed the

diligence and patience necessary to do so! 'nce you

have i#proved your drea# recall to a couple drea#s

per night you can #ove on to atte#pting to induce

lucid drea#ing! 4gain, practice and #otivation will

beco#e )ey co#ponents to your success at luciddrea#ing!

#o$ long does it ta'e

"he length of ti#e reuired to have steady lucid

drea#s varies, depending on the person!

Deep in #ind since we are all individuals

it #ay also si#ply not be possible for you

to beco#e steady with your lucid

drea#ing: it is very li)ely you&ll only be

able to have a couple a #onth, if even

that #any! 4s stated previously drea#

recall, practice, and #otivation are all

critical co#ponents to successful lucid

drea#ing! 'bviously one who begins

with ecellent drea# recall will reuire

less ti#e and effort than one who only

occasionally re#e#bers his or her

drea#s! o#e will be #ore ardent than

others and will find it easier to stay#otivated and to practice! 4lso, there are

always those who see# to have a natural

predisposition for various s)ills, thus will

be able to proceed at an accelerated pace

regardless of their previous level of

eperience! % should note that lucid

drea#s are not necessarily only attained

by vigorous practice and diligence6it is

uite possible you have already

eperienced lucid drea#ing, although you

#ay not already )now it! %n fact, after

reading this site on lucid drea#ing you#ay very well have a lucid drea# tonight

 6si#ply reading about and constantly

thin)ing about lucid drea#ing is often

enough to induce a lucid drea#! 4ttaining

the ability to lucid drea# at will,

however, reuires effort on your part!

+or further infor#ation on learning lucid drea#ing

you can read through our  4ttaining ucidity foru#

on the #essage board! +ro# here we&ll #ove on to

the stages of sleep which you should )now about so

that you can learn when you have the #ost vivid

drea#s during the night, which will aid in developing

recall and inducing lucid drea#s!

Page 9: DreamViews.com

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dreamviewscom 9/21

"he tages of leep

4lthough sleep #ay see# li)e a steady state, it

actually consists of several stages that cycle

throughout the night! "he types of brain waves

present at the ti#e (based on a#plitudes and

freuencies deter#ine the stage of sleep! 'nly a brief introduction to the stages of sleep will be

presented here because a thorough ea#ination of

the# is beyond the scope of this site! ;ost

i#portantly, lucid drea#s occur in the 5th stage of

sleep, )nown as the *; ( Rapid Eye Moment  stage

(note REM is read as a word, not as each individual

letter ! 4s the na#e alludes to, the #ost profound

discernible characteristic of *; sleep is the bursts

of rapid eye #ove#ent while drea#ing! 4lthough

drea#ing occurs during the other stages of sleep, the

#ost vivid drea#ing occurs during the *; stage!

'ne co#plete sleep cycle lasts about EF to 1FF

#inutes8 therefore during an average sleep period a

person will eperience G to 5 co#plete sleep cycles!

"he sleep cycle begins with four stages of 9

(!low-ave !leep, also called C*; ( #on-REM !

Cote that after the co#pletion of the Gth stage, the

5th stage does not i##ediately begin8 instead, the

first G stages uic)ly reverse and are then

i##ediately followed by a *; period! "he first

*;

period will occur roughly EF #inutes after falling

asleep8 thus the first *; period will last only about

1F #inutes, given the length of each sleep cycle

being roughly 1FF #inutes! "he length of the stages

is not static, however: as the night proceeds, the

length of stages 3 and G (also called delta or deep

sleep begins to wane, and the length of *; sleep

increases, up to about one hour in length after a

nu#ber of cycles! "herefore, as the night goes on,

you drea# for longer periods of ti#e!

"he following table offers a su##ary of the stages ofsleep:

veryone drea#s every night, regardless of

what so#e #ay say! "hose who clai# that they don&t

drea# si#ply don&t re#e#ber their drea#s! o#e

people naturally re#e#ber their drea#s8 #any of us,

however, lose our ability to recall our drea#s as we

grow older due to the relentless stress and concerns

of our every day lives! =eveloping proficient drea#

recall is absolutely necessary when proceeding down

the path to lucid drea#ing for a couple )ey reasons!+irst of all, lucid drea#s are usually induced by

certain cues or signs6you need to be conscious

enough to ac)nowledge these signs if you wish to

advance your awareness in the drea# world! 9hen

we get into drea# signs we&ll further discuss these

devices of induction8 for now it is sufficient to say

that identifying your personal drea# signs will assist

you in your endeavour to drea# lucidly, and in order

to fa#iliarie yourself with your personal drea#

signs you need to begin recording your drea#s and

loo)ing for recurring ele#ents and aspects! "he

second reason for why developing drea# recall is soi#portant is rather si#ple: without being able to

re#e#ber your drea#s, you&ll forget any drea#s in

which you beca#e lucidH %t is etre#ely li)ely that

you&ve already eperienced several lucid drea#s but

$ust don&t )now it because you forgot the# during

the course of the night!

Ietting enough sleep at night is essential to

i#proving your ability to recall your drea#s! 4s long

as you&re well rested you&ll find it easier to focus

your intent on recalling your drea#s and youra#bition won&t be clouded by fatigue! 4lso, if you&re

able to get plenty of sleep during the night you won&t

#ind wa)ing up repeatedly to record your drea#s6

and that&s eactly what you&ll have to do! +inally, as

discussed in the section on stages of sleep, the *;

periods get longer during the latter hours of sleep8

thus sleeping for longer periods will give you #ore

of an opportunity to awa)en fro# your drea#s and

re#e#ber the#, and will also give you #ore

infor#ation to record!

4 dependable drea# recall will help in #any ways,

so it&s i#portant that you don&t develop it in a half.hearted #anner! i#ply wa)ing up in the #orning

and trying to recall the drea#s you had throughout

the course of the night is not enough! =uring the

night you will have #any different drea#s6at least

one per *; period of sleep! "he brain tends to

erase #e#ories of the previous drea# during the

inter#ediate stages between *; sleep! "hus, to

salvage the #e#ories of your drea#s you&ll need to

awa)e during the *; periods, while the drea#s are

still fresh in your #ind! "o beco#e proficient with

drea# recall you&ll need to be able to recall a few

drea#s per night! osing a night here and there to

stress or aniety is understandable, but be careful not

to fall into a rut! 4wa)ing during or shortly after

*; periods is tric)y, but there are a couple

#ethods to aid in this! "he first #ethod si#ply

involves atte#pting to ti#e your awa)ening via an

alar# cloc) so that you&ll awa)e during a *;

period! 4s discussed in the section on stages of sleep,

the *; periods occur roughly every EF #inutes!

4i#ing for the latter *; periods (about G!5, J, or

7!5 hours into sleep is best because those are the

longest drea# periods! "he second #ethod is si#ilar but not as easy to regulate: drin) a lot of water before

going to bed@

"o be able to eventually control your drea#s you&re

going to have to focus your intent on doing so!

"herefore a better #ethod of recalling your drea#s is

to focus your intent on re#e#bering the# before

falling asleep, since this will prepare you for

eventually atte#pting to control your drea#s! ou

#ust be deter#ined in your resolve and you should

atte#pt to prevent etraneous thoughts fro#

attenuating your intent! Kerbally stating your desireto re#e#ber your drea#s while falling asleep is the

best way to acco#plish this! %t #ay sound silly but

Before atte#pting to drea# lucidly, you should

re#e#ber a couple drea#s a night is sufficient!

"here are nu#erous techniues to induce lucid

your own personal techniue(s eventually! %&#

going to focus on one particular techniue here

since it is the #ost co##on, the easiest to

and can be fine.tuned for personal use! "he

tutorials section will present a few #ore

techniues to induce lucid drea#ing and users

post new ideas and techniues in our #essage

board all the ti#e! "he induction techniue presented here is )nown as the Reality &esting

&echni'ue!

)eality *esting *ecni+ue

4s the na#e suggests, the *eality "esting

"echniue si#ply involves trying to deter#ine

whether you are awa)e or drea#ing by

ea#ining the world around you to deter#ine if

it is real! "here are essentially two co#ponents

to this techniue: being attentive to the worldaround you and watching for dream signs, and

perfor#ing routine reality checks during the day!

"he idea is pretty si#ple: if you&re able to

deter#ine that so#ething you&ve witnessed

si#ply cannot be possible, then you are probably

drea#ing!

"he first thing you should do is train yourself to

be on the alert for  drea# signs during the wa)ing

hours! 9hy during the wa)ing hours, you as)9ell, uite si#ply, you need to bring yourself

into the habit of uestioning the world around

you and loo)ing for anything out of the ordinary!

"his reconditioning of your acceptance of the

world around you will hopefully not be

constrained within the wa)ing hours alone, but

should follow you into the drea# world as well!

"hus, if you start scrutiniing the world while

awa)e, you&ll probably begin the sa#e practice

while asleep! 9henever so#ething strange (or

slightly out of the ordinary happens, don&tsi#ply dis#iss it! top and really thin) about

what happened and decide whether or not it was

possible! 'bviously the answer #ust be -yes0 if

you&re awa)e, but again the idea is to get in the

habit of uestioning the world around you so

that you&ll do so while drea#ing!

=evice failure is a very co##on drea# sign and

is often overloo)ed! %f you )eep an active drea#

$ournal, go through and loo) for incidents when

a device (a light switch, #icrowave, telephone, etc! didn&t wor) properly or at all! ou will

probably find this happens uite a lot in drea#s

6in fact, #ore often than not when devices are

concerned! 9hen so#ething stops wor)ing

during the wa)ing hours6even when a light

$ust happened! 4s) yourself whether it was

really possible, and briefly ea#ine the world

around you and decide for yourself whether

you&re awa)e or not!

ven if you&ve co#pletely convinced yourself

then do it again! %f the tet or ti#e ineplicably

changes, then you are in fact drea#ing! ven ifthe ti#e or tet doesn&t change, try to focus on

changing it for a #o#ent! %n drea#s tet often

changes upon a second glance and we al#ost

always accept it, even though clearly it is an

alar#ing clue that we are drea#ing!

9hat %&ve been describing is called a reality

check ! 4 reality chec) is a si#ple test to

deter#ine if what you&re seeing is real or not! 4s

% alluded to above, reality chec)s can be

perfor#ed upon seeing a drea# sign, but also

should be done routinely throughout the day

without a drea# sign as a prea#ble! 4 good idea

is to assign certain ti#es of the day to do reality

chec)s, such as when you arrive ho#e, or when

you enter your bedroo#, etc! %f you diligently

 perfor# a uic) reality test every ti#e you co#e

ho#e or enter your roo#, chances are you will

continue the sa#e practice while drea#ing!

?opefully, upon perfor#ing the reality chec)

while drea#ing, you&ll catch on to the fact thatyou&re not awa)e! ou can also perfor# reality

chec)s whenever you thin) about it during the

day, or whenever so#ething re#inds you of

your drea#s6if you&ve fa#iliaried yourself

with your drea# signs they can help trigger your

#e#ory and re#ind you to perfor# reality

chec)s if you otherwise forget! "he #ore

consistent you are at perfor#ing reality chec)s,

the better your chances are of being able to

induce a lucid drea#!

'ne si#ple #ethod % have personally tried is

wearing a digital watch that chi#es every hour!

"he chi#e re#inds #e to perfor# a drea#

chec), and the digital screen on the watch allows

#e to perfor# that drea# chec)! "his is great for

re#inding yourself to perfor# reality chec)s

during the day, but in doing so you condition

yourself to perfor# a reality chec) upon the

presence of the chi#e! 9ithout the presence of

this sti#ulus, you&ll li)ely forget to perfor#

reality chec)s! "herein lies the i#pedi#ent of

this #ethod: you have to be so#eone who sleeps

-light0 enough to be aware of the chi#es of your

watch and allow the# to enter your drea#s fro#

the real world! % personally achieved littlesuccess with this #ethod! 9hile % would regard

#ethods (such as assigning reality chec) ti#es

during the day, watching for strange

occurrences, etc! will lead to the greatest

success with lucid drea#ing!

4lthough all that is needed to beco#e lucid in a

drea# is the realiation that you&re drea#ing,

that doesn&t necessarily #ean you&re going to

 beco#e fully.lucid! 4s discussed on the drea#
