everal years ago, InnisbrookResort and Golf Club in PalmHarbor, Florida, ran three sepa-

rate junior golf tournaments. Accordingto Dawn Mercer, Innisbrook’s Director ofInstruction, the events drew 169 boys and49 girls aged 19 and younger or a ratio of4:1. This ratio is typical of junior golf par-ticipation.

Since there are fewer girls than boys par-ticipating in junior level golf, the girlshave many more opportunities to play oncollege teams. There’s no doubt that golfis fast becoming one of the most compet-itive of college sports, especially inwomen’s sports. This creates an abun-dance of college golfing scholarship op-portunities, a fact that has largely beenignored in the past. Recently, there were

about 253 Division I, 168 Division II, and175 Division III schools sponsoringwomen’s golf teams. Division I schoolsare allowed to offer the equivalent of 6full scholarships for women while Divi-sion II schools are allowed to offer theequivalent of 5.4. Division III schools donot offer athletic scholarships.

While it is difficult to confirm the numberof women’s golf scholarships that werenot awarded in recent years, it is esti-mated that more than 200 of the availablegirl’s golf scholarships went unused. Thesimple reason is that there are not enoughyoung ladies playing golf. With the imple-mentation of Title IX, colleges are re-quired to have the same numbers ofathletic scholarships for females andmales. This provides a huge opportunityfor female golfers. Colleges and universi-ties that belong to the NCAA typicallyoffer sports at the Division I, II, and III

level. Only about 2% of high school ath-letes are offered even a small sportsscholarship from a Division I or Division IIcollege. But it’s at the Division III level andits 400+ schools that the opportunities areenhanced and are discussed here.

Division III colleges do not offer athleticscholarships. Those are restricted to Di-vision I or II schools. But that doesn’tmean the Division III schools take theirprograms lightly or that they are not com-petitive. It simply means that the student-athletes are playing for the love of playingand competing. It also means that golferswho may not have the opportunity to becompetitive in a Division I or II programcan still participate and enjoy the benefitsof being a member of a competitive colle-giate program. Further, most of the Divi-sion III schools do an excellent job ofproviding financial aid in the form of aca-demic scholarships, need-based grantsand loans. Division III student-athletes areusually surprised at the amount of non-athletic financial assistance available tothem and the quality of competition. Infact, a non-athletic financial aid package(based on grades and test scores or fi-nancial need, or both), could be worthmore than a partial golf scholarship

When you qualify for need-based finan-cial aid or a merit scholarship of somesort (academics, arts, etc.) then you areeligible for and more likely to receivemoney to attend a Division III school. Bet-ter still, some Division III schools tend tofavor athletic prospects. They just don’toffer money for playing a specific sportsuch as golf. But, what the schools can(and often) do is “sweeten the pot”.

Suppose your family qualifies for needs-based financial aid and your daughter (orson) is playing or has played on the highschool golf team. Rather than awarding afinancial assistance package that con-sists mostly of an interest loan and somegrant money, the college may offer ascholarship that is all or predominantlygrant money. Or, if the college is unableto offer financial assistance, they may beable to compensate by increasing theodds of admission. The point here is thatif there is a school that interests your

child, it doesn’t hurt to contact the coachand express your child’s interest in at-tending and playing at that particularschool. These schools are always tryingto attract the best student golfers thathave equally impressive academicrecords or are able to demonstrate adeep need for financial aid.

There is a place for most girls who wantto compete in golf for a Division III school.A girl has a tremendous opportunity, es-pecially at the Division III level, if she hasa handicap of 15 or less, can score in the80-110 range on a 5800 yard course, andhas competed in state or local tourna-ments. If she can break 85 from the for-ward tees and 100 from the middle tees, she has potential for a college team. Thebottom line is if she can score around 95under tournament conditions, college isa strong possibility.

There are plenty of schools in need offemale players. Visit www.golfstat.comfor a list of many of the Division I, II,and III schools and their current rank-ings. Most Division I and II schools re-cruit 1-2 years in advance whileDivision III schools work in the summer

leading up to one’s senior year.

Besides the NCAA, there are two otherleading college athletic associations:

The National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics (NAIA)

National Junior College Athletic Asso-ciation (NJCAA)

Both these organizations and theirschools have scholarships available andpresent wonderful opportunities foryoung women athletes. In fact, it is inthese organizations that most scholar-ships go unused. Scholarships at NJCAAare much less competitive because notenough students know about them andthe coaches are not aware of the avail-able talent.

While recruiting timelines are very gen-eral in nature, there are some commonelements that need to be followed.

Freshman, sophomores, and juniorsshould...• Pay close attention to their grades

and class rank. • They should play in enough high

school and junior events in order toestablish a handicap and tournamentrecord.

• Keep working on and improving theirgame with particular emphasis on theshort game.

• Narrow down the college list andmake a number of unofficial visits

Sophomores and juniors should...• Begin researching various schools of

interest• Meet with enrolled contemporaries

and ask a lot of questions about theschool, its program and coaches.

• Take the SAT by your junior year.• Register for the NCAA Eligibility Cen-

ter to certify academic and amateurcredentials

• Send personal introduction letters tothe school’s golf coach and includeyour golfing resume

Many Division III coaches recommendselecting schools within a player’s geo-graphic comfort zone for competitiontravel, as well as schools that fit the stu-dent’s academic and size criteria. Theycaution that players need to be realisticabout their fit for a particular collegebased on rankings. Once a student has

selected a target list of potential schools, she should send out about 20 letters topotential schools working from Division Ithrough Division III depending upon hergolfing skill. A list of all golf coaches andhow to contact them can be accessedfrom www.collegegolf.com.

Parents may do well by introducing theirchildren to golf, especially daughters, and encouraging them to participate in

the many junior golf programs heldthroughout the country. Keeping golf sim-ple and fun can return big dividendsdown the road.

ost golfers slice the golf ball. Why is this bad? The slice is aninefficient, glancing blow that

robs you of valuable distance and accu-racy. A slice is caused by a combinationof an open clubface and a path that is toomuch to the left. Here is how you can fix it.

GripIf you slice, the first thing you need tocheck is your grip as it may be too weak.Place tees in the crease between yourthumbs and palms and check the locationof the tees. If the tees are pointing moreto the left, your grip is too weak. Makesure that the tees are more on the rightside of the club to correct your weak grip.

SetupMost slicers have a poor setup that hasthe spine tilted toward the target. This en-courages an upright backswing and anout-to-in downswing. The correct this, get setup and then touch the outside ofyour right knee with your right hand andthen grip the club. This will help you tofeel the correct spine tilt for a good back-

swing and an inside approach on thedownswing.Carry the TrayAt the top of your backswing, cupping theleft wrist can open your clubface. Use theimage of a waiter holding a tray whichwill bend your right wrist and flatten yourleft wrist.

Put Something in the WayPlace a headcover, water bottle or an-other obstacle outside of the target lineand behind the ball getting in the way ofan out-to-in path. The obstacle will help toencourage a downswing from the inside.

Great CoursesBuffalo Dunes Golf Course, ranked as

the No. 1 municipally-owned golf coursein Kansas by Golf Digest magazine. It hasbeen recognized by Golf Magazine andTravel & Leisure Magazine as places toplay and best bangs for the buck.

Challenging, enjoyable and affordable,Buffalo Dunes will give you a little bit ofScottish feel as it is nestled among the

historic sand hills six miles south of Gar-den City. Beautifully conditioned, theDunes has bluegrass fairways, well-maintained bent grass greens and nativegrasses that challenges the golfer andprovides a memorable experience.

The course can play at differinglengths based upon a player’s skill level, with yardages from 5,452 to the champi-onship tees of 6,806 yards. Buffalo Duneshas played host to numerous Kansas GolfAssociation state championships throughthe years as well as hosting high schoolregional and state tournaments.

The Golf club Southwind opened in1980. First time players to the course willbe amazed at how demanding the courseis, at first glance people think this will bean easy course to play due a lack of thestandard trees along the fairway. You willhave to play to believe .Both tour veteransand newcomers alike flock to the courseeach year to chase the large pro-am purse.

Great CauseOver the past 30 years the Southwest

Kansas Pro-Am has raised nearly $1 mil-lion to help support the equipment andeducational needs of St. Catherine Hos-pital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit.Founded in 1977, the Newborn IntensiveCare Unit serves the critical medicalneeds of infants and families in westernKansas, eastern Colorado and the Okla-homa panhandle. With the only Level IINBICU in the area, St. Catherine Hospitalserves hundreds of families each year, saving families the stress and expense ofhaving to seek medical care more than200 miles from home.

aa-Ko Ridge Golf Club, locatedin Sandia Park New Mexicoabout a twenty five minute

drive from the middle of Albuquerque.Paa-Ko Ridge though still a relatively newcourse (opened in 2000) has piled up a lotof accolades and the course is actuallyimproving with age, it certainly is not di-minishing.

Ranked the number #1 golf course inNew Mexico for the 14th straight year(every year since it opened) and it hasmaintained that lofty status despite theaddition of several really nice venues inthe state. Twin Warriors and Black Mesato name two. Ranked nationally five starsby Golf Digest and recognized as a Na-tional Top Ten Best Course For TheMoney by Links Magazine, Paa-Ko RidgeGolf Club earns it’s must play status.

The real genius in the design of Paa-KoRidge is what I call the “evolutionary ex-perience”. It applies to a course you notonly don’t tire of playing, but one you cometo appreciate more the more you play it.

Playing Paa-Ko Ridge for the first timeit’s easy to get lost in the absolute beautysurrounding you and lose focus on theactual golf. This is a good thing; youknow you are in a special place when thephysical beauty of the design and con-struction of a golf course distracts youfrom the strategic thinking necessary tonavigate a course. When you get thefeeling the course just evolved out of thenatural landscape, the Architect and thecrew maintaining the course have at-tained an increasingly rare level of ac-complishment.

Progressing on in our “evolutionary ex-perience” is sight lines and aiming pointsto the fairways from the tee boxes. Whilethe fairways are generously wide withaiming points indicated by white poles inthe fairway, most players ignore that valu-able information the first couple of timesaround the course because your eye de-ceives you into you playing a line that canbring trouble into play. It is about roundthree or four when you finally decide theperson who put those poles in the groundmight know a little something about navi-gating the golf course. Coincidently thisis when you make the amazing discovery

that the fairways really are pretty wideand you aren’t saving much yardage bytrying those tight shots into the apex ofthe bend in the fairway anyway.

To complete the “evolutionary experi-ence” you have to understand the shotsyou choose to hit to the greens are abouta lot more than distance, line and club se-lection although they are all critical too.Great course design like Paa-Ko Ridgerequires you to imagine what Ken Dyehad in mind when he sited the greens asthey are. All are large, undulating andhave multiple tiers. How did he envisionthe shot required to get it close to the flagon any given hole and pin placement. AtPaa-Ko Ridge you ignore this at your ownperil. The designed landing areas oneach green require you to consider thebest and worst case scenario for everyapproach shot. For example, say you’relooking at a back pin on an upper tier overa bunker. Your first thought is the shot re-quires you to try and hit it over a ridge toan exact distance and try and stop theball within a yard or two to be in birdieputt range and the worst case is youcome up short and roll down the ridge tothe tier below and fight it out with yourputter trying to avoid a 3 putt. What thedesign of the course will reward is to flythe ball at least the full distance to thehole, even 5-10 yards past the hole and bydesign the ball will roll back towards thehole and give you that same birdie puttwith half the stress. When you evaluatethe shot with what the designer of thecourse intended, you have “evolved” to abetter score and more appreciation of amasterfully designed golf course, likePaa-Ko Ridge Golf Club. D

ome favorite golf destinationsfor the Classic GOLF Toursteam. To become experts on

golfing opportunities around the world,we must occasionally push away fromour desks; grab a flight and hit the links insome far flung part of the planet. It’stough duty, but someone has to do it. Nowthat we are back behind our desks again, here are some of the highlights, experi-ences and reflections from our teamabout these golf junkets.

Ireland - Neil I visited the Dublin area in April andplayed two courses at Druids Glen (Heathand Glen). I also played Royal Dublin, agreat old course with a strong links style.Just 14 miles west of Dublin is my new fa-vorite place to stay & play. The CartonHouse, an 18th century renovated estatesitting on 1700 spectacular acres, hastwo impressive courses - the O’Mearaand the Montgomerie. I also visited Dro-moland Castle, an 11th century castle up-dated to appeal to today’s luxury traveler. With it’s onsite championship course, it isalso one of my favorites and convenientlyclose to the Shannon airport. My last stopwas Greg Norman's exciting DoonbegResort. Fabulous is my word for thisplace. The resort has one of Ireland’sbest courses and some of its most com-fortable lodges.

England’s Golf Coast– Dave & Peter Dave and I barely had time for a pint be-tween rounds at the three British Opencourse and other hidden gems near Liver-pool. Royal Liverpool, Royal Lytham & St.Annes and Royal Birkdale (our favoriteand site of the 2008 British Open) wereevery bit as terrific as advertised. Othergems such as Formbys and the S & Astand out as well. The northwest coast ofEngland has many fine courses, great ac-commodations and fewer golfers compet-ing for prime tee times. Due to its location, the warming Gulf Stream makes playinggolf in early April comfortable and fun.

Wales – Neil “Wales, golf as it should be.” “Worldclass golf at reasonable prices.” "Easyaccess by rail or car from LondonHeathrow or Liverpool/Manchester."These are things to remember about golfin Wales. Great golf courses abound inWales and three of the best are at TheCeltic Manor in Newport. The 2010Course, site of the 2010 Ryder Cup, theRoman Road Course and the Mont-gomerie Course are great tracks at rea-sonable prices. Near Cardiff is theMarriott St. Pierre with its championshipOld Course. This too is a great stay & playlocation. I also recommend Royal Porth-cawl located just outside of Cardiff. It’s atrue links course that rivals anything inScotland or Ireland. To the northwest isRoyal St. Davids. It has one of the mostspectacular backdrops for a golf courseanywhere. Further north, you’ll findConwy and Bull Bay.

Argentina – Peter There aren’t many places in the worldwhere the dollar is strong, fabulous golfis inexpensive, steak is as available andpriced as MacDonald’s hamburgers andfine wine cost about as much as a sixpack of Coors. I love this place! Ten daysand six rounds of golf around BuenosAires and Patagonia convinced me thatArgentina's is a golfer’s paradise. TheBritish/Scottish influence on golf coursedesign is most apparent around BuenosAires. Clubs such as the Jockey Club, LosOlivos, Buenos Aires Golf Club and SanAndres Golf Club (translation: St. An-drews Golf Club) are fabulous examplesof the United Kingdom's influence on clubhouse and course design. In Patagonia, land of “gauchos” (local cowboys),rugged snow covered mountains anddeep blue lakes, you will find more mod-ern courses such as Arelauquen, LlaoLlao and Jack Nicklaus’ new courseChapelco. You may want to bring your flyrod too. The fishing is world class.

Cancun, Mexico – Jim I had a chance to explore Mexico’s latestaddition to its stable of fine golf courses

in early December. Cancun has alwayshad wonderful beaches, great hotels andworld class resorts and restaurants, butgreat golf is something fairly new to thisarea. The Playacar Golf Club and JackNicklaus’ Moon Palace Golf Resort areimpressive and challenging additions toCancun’s golf scene.

hat is AimPoint? AimPoint is aputt predictive technology thatwas developed by Mark

Sweeney and was the “blue line” over-layed on the greens on the Thursday andFriday broadcasts of the PGA Tour eventson The Golf Channel in 2012. Mark and histeam went to PGA Tour stops and com-puter mapped the greens with a laser ma-chine. The accumulated green data wasused in a computer software programwhich accurately predicted the path theputt should take in order to go in. Thissame technology has been put into an In-structional program that teaches you thescience of how to read greens in a fun yetinformative clinic. You will go from think-ing that a putt breaks this way or that, toknowing exactly how much break to playfor any putt. And the cool thing is that itworks anywhere! There are two levels oftraining – Fundamentals and AdvancedConcepts. The fundamental clinics teach

you everything you need to know aboutthe AimCharts, the system and readingevery putt within 20’ of the cup. The Ad-vanced clinics go one step further andteach you how to handle all those “tricky”putts over knolls, shoulders, swales, crowns, saddles and everything outside of20’. You also learn how to utilize the con-cepts to enhance your short game and ap-proach shots as well as green chartingand tournament preparation. The clinicsare approximately 2 - 2 ½ hours long andclass sizes are kept to a maximum of 8 –10 students to ensure an intimate learningexperience for all involved.

Who Teaches AimPoint? Stan Sayersand Scotty Hofer from MetaGolf LearningCenter are the Certified AimPoint In-structors for the Rocky Mountain Regionand have taught classes both here and inother parts of the United States. at just how effective the system really is.Specializing in the areas of putting andgreen reading, Stan and Scotty havetaught players of all levels.

Why you need AimPoint? A recentstudy conducted in Norway by Jon Karl-son at the Norwegian School of SportsScience concluded that over 60% ofmissed putts are due to faulty reads! Thatnumber gets even higher if you are anelite amateur or professional player be-cause, by that point, your equipment andstroke mechanics are generally quitesound. The AimPoint Green Reading Sys-tem will not only teach you how to handlethe greens but will also show you how toimplement the concepts into your shortgame! AimPoint clients include many ofthe top players and caddies on the Pro-fessional Tours including Stacy Lewis(2012 LPGA Player of the Year), NickFaldo, Padraig Harrington, Scott McCar-ron, Steven Ames, and Suzann Pettersen, just to name a few. pplewood Golf Course has al-ways been a course that wel-comed any necessary changes.

This started back in 1965 when the golfcourse officially became Applewood, until1965 the course was Rolling Hills CountryClub. The change in name also meant thatthe course was now open to the public.Since becoming a public course Apple-wood is one of the most played public golfcourses in the Metro area, in May Apple-wood averaged over 200 rounds each day.Golfers ask what keeps bringing golfersback to Applewood?

Applewood is built on 46 acres of landthat is above the Coors brewing aquifer.Being above the Coors aquifer drawsgolfers to Applewood, and not just thediehard Coors fans, but because sittingabove the aquifer means the course isnot able to use any type of chemicals. This unique management approach leadsto a golfing experience that can only befound in a few places nationwide. Butdon’t let the lack of chemicals fool you,Superintendent Matt Rusch always hasthe course in wonderful shape. Mr. Ruschdoes such an amazing job he was namedSuperintendent of the year by Touch-stone Golf in 2011. He was chosen out ofa group of over 25 superintendents thatmake up the Touchstone Golf.

In 2008, Touchstone Golf was awardedthe lease of Applewood. With the sup-port from Touchstone, Applewood hasbeen able to make several improvements. In the last three years, there have been a

number of greens that have been re-sod-ded. Along with new greens the course isspending this summer re-sodding theirtee boxes and in some cases startingfrom scratch and building completelynew tee boxes. The biggest improvementat Applewood is most definitely The Vistaat Applewood, The Vista is a beautifulbanquet facility that is available to hostany gathering whether it is lunch after agolf tournament, a wedding, or even awake. Yes, that’s right some people loveApplewood so much they actually ask tohave their wake held at their favorite golfcourse. For weddings, a future bridewould be hard pressed to find a betterview than the one from the ceremony lo-cation just east of the ninth hole at Ap-plewood. When looking west from theceremony, the guests can see down themountain range all the way to theFlatirons just west of Boulder. The Vistahas become part of the community sur-rounding Applewood. Visitors who didn’tplay golf before return to the course tolearn to play or just enjoy the environ-ment in the foothills of Colorado.

Beyond the rare chemical free courseand the huge improvements, Applewoodis able to attract golfers because formost people once they play there theyare hooked for life. There are so manygolf courses in the Metro area so whatreally gets them hooked on Applewood? It’s truly simple a combination of greatgolf, breathtaking views of the ColoradoRockies, fair green fees, and most impor-tantly Applewood is a very friendly golfcourse. When customers walk in to thepro shop for the first time they will hearfellow customers being greeted by name

by the pro shop staff, they will also hearthe golf course staff holding conversa-tions with customers instead of acting tobusy. The staff always goes out of theirway to catch up with golfers they haven’tseen for a while. This seems like a minordetail but it is often those minor detailsthat make the golfers feel comfortableand want to return. Applewood is likehome to many golfer and no matter howgreat a vacation to another course is,there just isn’t any place quite like home.
