Say NO to noisy neighbours! You’re a part of your student and local community, so it’s really important that you keep noise to a minimum both in the residences and when you’re out and about - especially at night.

Remember, noise works both ways. You don’t want to be kept up late when you’ve got an exam or coursework deadline approaching. Be considerate to those around you when you’re staying up and they'll be considerate to you!

SMART WATER

Burglars beware – SmartWater about to make a splash in the residences!

Not heard of SmartWater yet? Well, it’s being used to help you in the fight against crime.

SmartWater is an invisible property marking system with a unique DNA style code. When used, any recovered stolen property can be traced back to the exact place from where it was stolen and returned to its rightful owner. Plus, offenders can be easily linked back to the crime scene, which has resulted in a 100% conviction rate across the country.

With Sheffield Safer Communities Partnership, ACS has secured funding to provide 250 students with SmartWater Kits during Student Crime Reduction Week. Richard Yates, ACS Security Services Manager, says, “We’re pleased to be able to provide our residents with free SmartWater Kits and hope that their use will assist in reducing crime against students in Sheffield.”

Come along to The Edge Hub on Monday 26 October and Chee Dale at The Ridge on Tuesday 27 October, 3.30-6.30pm to get your free kit.

LIKE IT? LOCK IT, KEEP IT!

Sheffield is one of the safest cities in the UK, but students can often be targets of crime. Your safety is our top priority and Security Services are working in partnership with local police to ensure this. It’s also important that you are vigilant and do everything you can to protect yourself and your property – especially desirable items such as laptops, mobile phones and iPods.

Always make sure external doors shut behind you and are locked – and don’t allow people to ‘tail-gate’ in.

Make sure you lock your door, even if you’re only out for a short time.

Close and lock windows when you leave a room and before you leave your accommodation.

Disguise your laptop by carrying it in an alternative to a laptop bag and always back up your work.

Be one of 250 students to get hold of a free SmartWater Kit at the Villages during Student Crime Reduction Week.

Register your mobile phone and other belongings at www.immobilise.com

Ok, so cleaning probably isn’t your favourite pastime, but it’s really important that your accommodation is kept clean and tidy.

We’ll be carrying out cleaning inspections in every property throughout November and December to check the cleanliness of your bedroom, bathroom and communal areas.

The cleaning team will contact you beforehand to let you know when they’ll be coming and give you time to ensure that everything is up to standard. If it isn’t, you’ll have a week to put it right before the team return!

Bar jobsDo you want to be behind bars?! Jobs are now available in ACS bars! We’re looking for experienced, vivacious students who can pull the perfect pint and indulge in some lively banter with our customers.

Send your CV (try to make yourself stand out!) to bars manager, Stefan Lowrie: [email protected]

TV licensingWe’re not ashamed to admit that we like a bit of Hollyoaks on a Sunday, and we love being able to catch up on all our

favourite programmes online using our computers.

But, no matter how good the programme, it’s not worth risking a fine and a court hearing if you don’t have a TV Licence!

Enforcement Officers are out and about checking for TV Licences, so make sure you’re covered. To find out more about TV Licensing and to buy online visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk/students?

Looking at our energy and water consumption is a great way to reduce our impact on the environment, but that’s just a small part of what we can each do. As cheaper and cheaper clothing becomes more readily available and our appetite for the latest gadgets increases, so too does the amount of waste we produce.

BRING IT, DON’T BIN IT

Last year, we launched the ‘bring it, don’t bin it’ campaign which aimed to get residents thinking differently about themselves as consumers and the way they recycle by encouraging them to donate unwanted items when moving out. The campaign was a big success with just under four tons of donations being collected, including clothing, crockery, bedding and unopened toiletries.

These were donated to local homeless charity, Emmaus Sheffield who gave the items to homeless people moving into their own accommodation, and used the rest to raise over £1,700.

We’ll be looking to you to beat last year’s residents and collect even more donations at the end of each semester! We’ll also be organising Student Swap Shops in December where you can bring along things you no longer want or need and swap them with your fellow residents for something you do!

RECYCLING FACILITIES IN THE RESIDENCES

We want to make it is as easy as possible for you to

recycle, that’s why there are paper, plastic and tin

recycling bins in every kitchen. There are

also recycling points (including glass) in each Community – The Ranmoor Village bins are on their way soon!

STUDENT SWITCH OFF

ACS is committed to environmental issues and is working in partnership with the Union on the national Student Switch Off campaign. All we need now is for you to get involved too! Check out Union President, Paul Tobin’s article on p.6 for details of how you can become an Eco-Power Ranger and really start making a difference.

In the residences, there’ll be block competitions throughout the year to see which blocks are best at reducing their energy consumption and some great prizes for winning residents will be up for grabs. ACS staff are doing their bit too and will be measuring the amount of energy and water they can save in The Edge!

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Make a real difference to your environmentReduce, reuse, recycle!

ACS is passionate about doing our bit to help save the environment. That’s why we’re aiming to reduce our energy consumption by 11% this year.

Now that you’ve had time to settle into your new home, think about your typical day’s relationship with water. Maybe you have a shower in the morning, make a cup of tea, grab a bottle of water at lunch, boil your pasta for tea and round off the day with a nice long soak in the bath.

In the UK, we are lucky enough not to have to dwell on the consequences of our water consumption. Others around the world don’t have that luxury.

Over 1 billion people in the world don’t have access to clean water and a staggering 5,000 children die every single day simply because they don’t have enough clean water to drink.

In the UK, we waste millions of litres of water in our homes every year. Unless we take action now, increased water demand means that the UK could face a big problem in the future.

Water Amnesty is running throughout October to highlight the importance of saving water. Just making small changes to your lifestyle can make a big difference and we have loads of tips to help you – not just for this month, but hopefully for life. You can also track your water usage by using our Water Diary. Get involved and try out our tips!

Find out more about Water Amnesty and track your water usage by downloading a Water Diary at: www.shef.ac.uk/water-amnesty

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Water top tips 1. Use a lid on your saucepans: the water will boil faster so your delicious dinner will be ready quicker!

2. When doing laundry, make sure you fill it up each time.

3. Don’t leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, wash your hands or shave – this can waste up to 5 litres of water per minute.

4. Put cotton wool and tissues in a waste bin rather than flushing down the toilet.

5. Keep an eye on the time you spend in the shower and aim to be no longer than five minutes.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Hello! I hope that you’re enjoying this environmentally themed edition of Digs – as the Union Officer responsible for being green, it really is an exciting time to be a student in the residences.

Because your electricity and gas is included in your rent, it’s easy to get into the habit of using as much as possible without thinking of the environmental consequences.

It doesn’t take much to make a massive difference – just turning off the lights at night and using lids when cooking will have a huge impact. ACS will be measuring which blocks save the most throughout the year and we’re looking for as many students as possible in the residences to become Eco-Power Rangers!

Basically, we want you guys to lead the way on saving energy and doing you’re bit for the environment.

There are loads of great incentives available for becoming an Eco-Power Ranger including Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, tickets to Union club nights, NUS Extra Cards and energy-saving gadgets.

Plus, in November, one lucky student will win a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream party for themselves and 40 of their friends! On top of all this, the winning residence will receive a celebratory end-of-year party.

This green scheme will be loads of fun and getting involved will be a great way to meet the other people in your block. We also want you guys to take pictures of each other being green to have a

chance of winning even more prizes. To become an Eco-Power Ranger, e-mail: [email protected] or grab me, Tall Paul, the next time you’re down the Union. It’s your planet and it’s time to get involved!

Residential Mentors We’ve all been first years so we know how daunting starting Uni can be

What’s your name?Jezz Meharg

Where do you live and which blocks do you cover?I live in the brand spanking new Ranmoor Village and look after Wimberry D6 – E6.

How are you finding living in The Ranmoor Village? Loving it! I like the size of the Village - it’s not too big which means you see lots of the same faces around and get to know people better. But it’s not too small because there’s always someone new to talk to!

Tell us a bit about yourself – what are your hobbies and interests? My passions are windsurfing, sailing and snowboarding, but I also love climbing, wakeboarding, golf and the mighty Aston Villa! I’m always open to new activities and

adventures, and for this reason I love travelling, going somewhere miles away and not having the faintest idea what it’s going to be like and

what I’ll be doing when I get there. I also love socialising and meeting new people.

Tell us a secret!I once woke up in the Arts Tower at 11 o’clock on a Saturday morning after a night out…

Moving swiftly on…!What made you decide to become a Residential Mentor?I was looking for a job and an apartment at the same time, and this ticked all the boxes. The best thing is, I get paid to do what I love i.e. spend time talking to people! GIFT!!!

Any advice for residents who haven’t settled in yet?Don’t worry, these things can take time. Just try to make the most of every opportunity given to you, join in as many activities as possible and don’t be afraid to give something new a bash!

RESIDENT SUPPORT

The Resident Support team are here to help you settle in, look after your wellbeing and support you with any welfare, accommodation, academic or personal issues you may be having.

We’ve all been first years so we know how daunting starting Uni can be. Most of us are still students and we all live in the residences, so are a part of the Community too.

We’re on duty between 6pm and 12am every evening during term and are on call between 12am and 6am if you need us. We’ll be out and about around the accommodation from 7pm or you can come and see us between 6pm and 7pm at The Ridge, Tapton and Opal Two receptions and at The Edge Hub.

SETTLING IN…Moving away from home, getting used to a new city and embarking on University life can sometimes be a challenge.

We hope you’re having a brilliant time but not everyone will settle in straight away – we know, because we’ve all been freshers too. Based upon our own experiences, here are some top tips for settling in!

• Sheffield is an amazing place to live so check out the local shops, visit one of the many parks and walk the route to your department to familiarise yourself

with the area.

• As well as your flatmates, there are lots of opportunities to meet other people in your Community, on your course and through the Union.

• If you’re feeling isolated, talk to your Residential Mentor. They

are here to support you and can introduce you to other students in your block.

• Avoid the temptation to go home every weekend and, instead, take advantage of all the events and activities that go on in the residences to keep you occupied. Check out the listings from p.13-15 for some inspiration!

• Don’t feel pressured into being a party animal if that’s not what you’re into – maintain your individuality.

• Go along to your flat/corridor meeting – they’re a great place to discuss those ‘little’ issues (“WHO THE %$@! USED THE LAST OF THE LOO ROLL!”) that can easily turn into BIG ISSUES.

Page 8: Digs Magazine: October 2009

YOUR BIT!

8 Digs Oct. 09

Relax and take the pressure off!

I really hope you’re all settling into your new homes and enjoying what University accommodation has to offer. ACS and the Union really want you to make the most of being a student by trying new things and meeting new people, but it’s easy to feel isolated if things aren’t going so well.

You are constantly told that university will be the best time of your life, so what happens if you aren’t having that

amazing time you anticipated? Well, you’ll probably be in the majority – we all have ups and downs and student life is no exception.

Leaving home is probably one of the biggest transitions in your life so far and I recently read that up to 70% of students feel homesick when they start university, so you are definitely not alone if you don’t find your feet straight away.

There is often a competitive nature to starting university. We all want to slot into our friendship groups as quickly as possible and no-one wants

to be the last person to find their niche, but please don’t be too hard on yourself if things take a little longer than you expected to settle down. If things aren’t going well, talk to someone – be it your flatmates, your Residential Mentor, the Student Advice Centre or Nightline.

As always, I have an open door policy, so if something’s up then get in touch. Email [email protected] or pop in to see me in the Union.
