i’m humbled by the positive reaction our “little” has

magazine received in the local marketplace—it’s

a validation of the power of print when you give a

specific segment of the market, in this case real estate,

something that’s truly “all theirs.” South Bay Digs was

created for the local real estate community as a plat-

form to discover, explore and connect. Having the op-

portunity to meet so many dynamic people, all differ-

ent and unique in their own way, has been a privilege.

Real estate in the South Bay is truly dynamic—each

city has its own “micro neighborhoods” within it. Ever

been to “New York Hill” in Palos Verdes? What about

the “Hill Section” in Manhattan Beach? Real

estate is local – this is why! The diversity

in architectural styles in each beach city is

amazing—from “tall and skinny” at the beach

to sprawling ranch on the hill in Palos Verdes

and everything in between.

Don’t miss this issue’s feature profile on

former NHL Hockey star and Hermosa Beach

resident Marty McSorley as we check out

his amazing ‘digs’ on the Strand. Designed by Grant

Kirkpatrick at KAA Design Group, it’s a fine example of

the distinctive architectural styles that define the South

Bay. Enjoy!

HOME OWNERS…Reach qualified buyers directlyIn today’s real estate market, it’s not enough to ‘PUSH’ your home listing out to the market via the MLS and hope a buyer finds your property. As the leading Real Estate Team in the South Bay, we have developed a strategic ‘PULL’ Marketing System that targets qualified buyers who want the inside track on a predefined inventory of properties that are currently for sale or coming on the market soon. We ‘PULL’ targeted buyers in the market and connect them directly to the targeted properties they want.

310 N Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo BeachThis classic turn-of-the-century Craftsman beach cottage is ZONED COMMER-CIAL, so it’s the perfect opportunity to live in a South Redondo house at a great price, OR run a business out of the location, OR both! It boasts gleaming wood floors, beautiful built-ins around the working fireplace, a built in sideboard area, a delightful breakfast nook, antique hardware and glass throughout, as well as original Craftsman cabinetry and wood encased windows and doorways; it still even has picture rails in each room! There is a deep one-car garage, which could fit 2 compact cars parking tandem; laundry hookups are in the garage. For commercial consideration, it is in a high visibility location with good foot traffic from neighboring Starbucks, public library, schools, Whole Foods shopping center and more. $549,000

Pre-Certified Buyers  Generally, pre-certified buyers are buyers who are new to the market. They have taken steps to con-tact an agent and begin the pre-qualification process. They are actively visiting open houses and searching for homes on the Internet. They still need to gain a pre-qualification letter from a lender and most are still narrow-ing their search criteria.

Certified BuyersThese buyers have been pre-QUALIFIED by our staff and also a lender. They have narrowed their search and are sometimes out looking at properties with an agent and sometimes visiting Open Houses on their own. They have a good sense of the market and what is available to them. If they found the right property, they would be committed to getting approval through a lender and would write an offer right away.

Platinum Certified BuyersThese are our most qualified buyers. They know ex-actly what they are looking for and have been actively looking at properties with an agent. They have seen most properties on the MLS already. They have been pre-APPROVED by a lender; funds & credit have been verified. If ALL CASH, funds have been verified. Ready to buy today.

Marty McSorley is chasing after a renegade wielding a hockey

stick. His target evades him, but not for long. McSorley grabs

him, picks him up and plants a kiss on the red-faced rebel’s baby-

soft cheek. This scene unfolds not on the ice but on the Hermosa

Beach Strand, and McSorley’s squirming captive is 2-year-old Owen,

his son with wife and pro beach volleyball player Leanne Schuster.

A two-time Stanley Cup winner and former NHL enfant terrible,

McSorley recently welcomed South Bay Digs into his custom Strand

home and extolled the virtues of family life, karma and classic Errol

Flynn movies. Former NHL star Marty McSorley worked with architect Grant Kirkpatrick to give his custom Hermosa Beach Strand home a “see-through effect.” Even though the pool and spa (above) are located in a central courtyard, they still have a stunning ocean view.

and sit at the table with all the warriors to wait for the next battle.

McSorley comes from Sorley, a Norwegian name. A lot of people at

the beach name their houses, so we decided to name ours in honor

of the Nordic roots. Keeping with the theme, our wood dining room

table—my wife would say it’s my baby; it takes four good-size men to

lift it and it’s reinforced with steel—is 6-and-a-half feet square, so no

one’s left out of the conversation. We have dinner parties, my kids sit

around and play puzzles and games…it’s the centerpiece of the living

area. Twenty years from now, I’ll see marks where my little boy has

rammed something or my little girl—she’s 3-and-a-half—has drawn

on it. I think it will add character to the house.

Yourhouseisbuiltinamodern, angularstylewithbigpicturewindows, yetithasawarmfeelingtoit.Howdidyoudecideontheopenfloorplan?Really, it was Grant Kirkpatrick, our architect’s idea, to have a see-

through effect and bring the outdoors inside. When we first bought

the property in 2001, it had this great old Spanish colonial home

with a courtyard. I wanted to keep the original house and update it,

but it wasn’t going to work. So we kept the courtyard idea with the

pool and Jacuzzi in the center, but even from back here you can look

through the house and still see the beach. The outdoor fire pit and

barbecue came later. Now we spend most of our time out here. I have

friends who come over and say, “Oh, so we’re ‘outside friends’?” And

I’ll say, “Well, this is just an outside moment.”

YourcareerhasallowedyoutolivealloverCanadaandtheU.S.—

Edmonton,Pittsburgh,NewYork,SanJose,Boston,LosAngeles.WhatmadeyouchooseHermosaBeach?I got traded to the L.A. Kings with Wayne Gretzky. His wife let me

stay in an apartment she kept in Sherman Oaks. I grew up on a farm

in Canada with a lot of open space. Staying in the Valley, I found

myself getting in the car and driving to the beach because I craved

the open space. I loved the attitude down here, the atmosphere.

When you’re playing, you get so fired up and your adrenaline is going

day after day, so this is a chance to get grounded. I ended up getting

an apartment on Marine Street and from that moment forward I’ve

always had a place in L.A. Over the course of eight and a half years, I

developed a support system here—friends, my orthopedic, nutrition-

ists, trainers. At one point you had almost all of the Kings team living

here, partly because of the training facility [in El Segundo], but also

because their wives are happy and their kids could enjoy it here. And

the people in South Bay just leave you alone. They don’t knock at

your door, they don’t come up to you all the time, probably because

they’re used to seeing athletes around.

It’sclearthatyoulovelivinghere.DescribeatypicalweekendintheSouthBaywiththefamily.If the weather’s nice we’ll get our bikes out, ride to the Redondo pier,

have some coffee and watch the kids run around and feed the peli-

cans and gulls and look at the fish. A lot of our good friends play vol-

leyball, but they mostly want Leanne to play. They call us “The good

one and the other one.” Later on, the whole family will get into the

Jacuzzi or go into the spa downstairs. This is probably my favorite

room in house because it’s tranquil and I can put my stinky hockey

equipment in the steam room. The spa area has concrete floors, so

you can just rinse off the sand and not worry about messing things

up. After that, it’s dinner, maybe read a book and go to bed, and it’s

been a good day. My daughter and I will go to a coffee shop Sunday

mornings. At 6 a.m., it’s good daddy-daughter time. A lot of the time continued on page 21

The focal point of the McSorley home is the custom designed 6.5-foot square wood and steel dining table.

Truly a luxury home worth the pursuit.

I’m traveling and doing speaking engagements. So the weekends I’m

off, we don’t get a sitter—we stay here.

Spokenlikeatruehomebody. When we were building our house, my wife and I thought, how do

we make it more about the family. I was lucky enough to play a long

time, but we didn’t want to put all our sports memorabilia out. If we

put up pictures, they were going to be of our kids and family. We

wanted it to feel comfortable and warm. The only place we hang

anything is in my office. We put up some trophies and jerseys and

decided to leave it at that. I do have some LeRoy Neiman paintings.

There’s one I have up of Gretzky’s 802nd goal. Our interior decora-

tors weren’t too keen on it—they called it the ‘Leonard Nimoy.’

Onthatnote, what’stheonethingyou’dsaveiftherewereafire? You know, there’s nothing in the house that means so much that I’d

go back in after it.

NoteventheVikingtable?[Laughs] As long as my wife and kids are safe, we’re fine. My wife

and I have talked about this. If we lived two miles back in a small

house away from the beach, we’re fine. This house is not us; we are

us. I think the individuals collectively are the strength of our family.

We’re both comfortable with where we are. We’ve had accomplish-

ments. You have the Stanley Cup, you have your things, but there’s

nothing I’d stop and get.

Workshoporwineroom?Workshop.

SmartphoneoriPad?None. I’m not ‘technologized’ [Laughs].

Catordog?Dog, absolutely. But we don’t have one because we travel so much.

And I grew up on a farm with wide-open spaces, so I hate to see

dogs confined.

Homegymorhometheater? You touched on two sides of me. Probably home theater. I love to sit

and watch History Channel documentaries. Sometimes when the kids

are in bed, my wife will sit with me and we’ll watch old movies. Errol

Flynn is phenomenal. I loved the original Robin Hood.

Theydon’tmakethemliketheyusedto.I’m very aware of history. It’s like the old house that once stood on

this lot—I wanted to incorporate the old beams into the new house

because I felt it was good karma. Unfortunately, the demo crew had

already torn the place down. One thing I was able to save was the ce-

ramic tile plaque with the original name, Las Olitas [Spanish for “the

little waves”]. We’ve embedded it in the steps leading to the Strand. If

you live at the beach, you should appreciate where you are and those

who were here before you.

the best part of living in Southern California is the mild

climate. Summer may be officially over on September 23rd,

but it doesn’t mean we all tuck in and move our activities

indoors. On the contrary, cocktail parties and barbeques still

rule our weekends. So, when it comes to buying new outdoor

furniture, it’s important to make the right choice.

There are several styles made out of different materials

these days. From synthetic wicker, rattan, wood and metal,

your choices are wide and varied. All are available and locally

found, but what is best for you?

First consider your location and what natural elements

are affecting it. Are you near the ocean or a pool? Is your area

sheltered from strong UV rays and rain? And just as important,

what style are you creating? Remember, ultimately your look

inside the house should reflect in the style you are producing

outside. Giving your living space a harmonious feeling.

All weather wickers, made of polyethylene fibers, are ex-

tremely durable and resistant to UV rays, humidity and water.

The color is added to the fiber in the production

process, so it will preserve the desired

visual appeal without fading. It is easy

to maintain, just hose it down, no

repainting or oiling. It has a

long life span and can come

100% recyclable. Manufactur-

ers have made pieces in all

sizes and forms, making it easy

to find the look you are

after.

Natural wicker was

made popular in the

Victorian times when

people built large veran-

das around their houses. It

was popular because

it was fancier than

the existing outdoor

furniture. Wicker, also

known as rattan is from a vine like plant called the Rotan Tree.

It is very elastic and comfortable to sit on. The elements will

gradually break down the wicker making it brittle and break

over time. It is better used in a protected outdoor area or

inside. It can be painted or stained like wood and is great for

spa

ce

s

creating a traditional

or beach like look.

Wood seating

is another option in

outdoor furniture.

Most woods need to be

sealed with paint or stain

to withstand the forces of nature,

with the exception of Teak. Teak is natu-

rally durable in severe weather conditions. Left in its natural state,

it will patina, turn a silver grey color. It will not harm the strength

of the wood by leaving it in this condition. If you prefer the natural

honey color of Teak, you must seal it right away. Most sealers contain

UV protection and fungicide to prevent mold and mildew (black spots

or patches) on the surface of the wood.

Metal-framed furniture is the “Little Black Dress” of outdoor seat-

ing. It fits in most situations and is extremely versatile. Most pieces are

made of powder-coated aluminum. The powder coat is applied as a

free-flowing powder that is cured with heat. This process can create a

wide range of looks and colors. You can find shiny chrome finishes to

rustic brown patinas with everything in between. Furniture designers

and manufacturers have produced this type of furniture in every style

you can imagine. Most pieces come with cushions covered in outdoor

fabric. This gives you even more reign in creating your desired look.

Great in covered or sun-exposed areas, however, the powder coat will

peel when exposed to UV rays in 5-10 years.

With all the different choices you have, it is important to go sit,

lounge, and hangout on the furniture you are considering purchasing.

Don’t be embarrassed to use the pieces in the store as you would at

home. Some furniture looks great but is uncomfortable to sit in for

any period of time. The way you feel when

lounging on your new outdoor furniture,

is as important as how it looks.

Having an outdoor living space

to relax in is like adding on

a new room to your home.

Start enjoying the great

outdoors now!

Smith & Hawken’s all-weather wicker Harbor lounge chair with Sunbrella cushions and ottoman resists fading and is easy to clean.

The Kreiss Mercury Ball Chair is made of thin steel wire, wrapped in dark brown synthetic rattan, which is then hand-shaped.

7 Sea Cove Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes

Great opportunity to purchase a rare coastal lot with plans for a 4000 square foot Marmol Radziner contemporary design home with 100 feet of frontage. Lot is across the street from the coastline. Lot is over 10,000 square feet and offers awesome ocean and coastline views. Sea Cove is a highly desirable street filled with some of Palos Verdes most desirable homes and has a private path to the beach and coastal tide pools. Close proximity to Terranea Resort, Abalone Cove, Portuguese Bend Club and Shoreline Park. Build home as a primary residence or a second home. Home across the street is said to be Frank Lloyd Wright’s last residential project. Land directly across the street is not buildable allowing for unblockable views. Buyer and buyer’s agent to verify all information. Seller is open to a joint venture for spec project.
