Digipak design ideas

J:\DCIM\102_FUJI\DSCF2516.JPGThese were some initial ideas I had. However, I didnt realise that my design didnt fold out like a proper digipak, so I couldnt use these exact ideas. I want the two sides (the girly side and the boyish side) to face each other when the digipak folds correctly. I want to do this to show that there can be two sides to somebody, a side which they want to be and a side that they feel they have to be.

I have a few ideas of where to take this, and I would like to experiment with the photo editing software Photoshop to achieve certain effects.I want to also use the model (Becky) as a decoy- shes not the real artist of the song and is instead a reoccurring theme throughout this album.

J:\DCIM\102_FUJI\DSCF2517.JPGMy design idea- rough concept!

Title: Is this all there is?

I wanted to use this title to play with the audience- instead of listing all the tracks on the back of the album, they have to buy the digipak to know whats in it fully.

J:\DCIM\102_FUJI\DSCF2518.JPGAgain, I wanted the two sides of the character to face each other, as if they were setting themselves up for a conflict. I wanted to do this to, in a way, relate to some of my target audience as many people are conflicted between what they want to look like and how they feel they have to. This type of conflict can be emotional for the person involved, so I want to relate to the audience to make them feel like theyre not the only ones experiencing that kind ordeal.

Behind the CD will feature the full track list. The CD will feature the logo of the artist, which I havent quite decided upon yet.

I will use the same costumes for the characters that will appear in my video and I will also feature a stereotypical pink and blue colour scheme, almost to patronise the audience by making it obvious what kind of conflict the character is in. This will also be reflected in our music video!

This is the front cover of my digipak- I want to imply that the male character has to hide themselves, a theme that will be consistent with the digipak.

The Z in the background is a rough indicator of a logo; I need to finalise designs before I put it on my digipak! (I want it to be quite ambiguous so it makes the audience think about the meaning of everything on the digipak.)

This is what the digipak will hopefully look like when its been folded over. I will have the female version looking right, and (on these two panels), the female version having her back to the camera.

I want the character to face away from the camera so signify a sense of hiding or shame- the character doesnt want to acknowledge the type of person shes forced to be.

I also want it to be this way because the male character is facing forward on the cover (but hiding themselves), whereas, as soon as its opened, the female character is standing confidently but facing away. (Both characters have to hide who they want to be and who they have to be.)

On the back of my digipak I want to include the name of the song Ive used for my music video but thats all. The title of the album/digipak (Is this all there is?) is therefore ironic as the target audience will have to buy the album to find out what other songs are on this release.

I want the character to be writing the track title, as if theyve been caught in the action. I want this to be the male character to contrast with the girly version on the inside.

I want the title of my digipak to be Is this all there is?, not only to make it ironic by only including the name of one track on the back, but to imply a sense that someone isnt getting the best out of life because theyre not being who they want to be. The main purpose of our music video is to convey to our audience that its ok to dress however you want to, even if some people dont like it. (At the end of the day, its your choice to dress and act however you want to.)

I want to use a reoccurring blue and pink overlay over the images to convey the sense of the Girl/Boy character. This isnt to patronise the audience but still make it obvious enough that this is what I intend to convey to them, that even with the girly or boyish look there is always a part of them that wants to contrast that particular image.

I want to get the model to wear the same clothes that the main character wears in the music video to make it obvious that the two are related. Since the song we chose is the only one listed on the back of the digipak, I wanted to highlight the importance that the album is putting on this particular song and music video. The other tracks will be listed inside with the CD.

Even though the singer of the song is clearly a male, we decided to use a female actress in our video. This is to obscure the image of the original artist, as some artists such as The Gorillaz choose to do. (The Gorillaz choose to use [often] animated characters to represent themselves and other members involved in their media production.) These characters are used on album designs and in their music videos. Only two of the members of The Gorillaz are known, and, in a similar style, I want to keep the real artist of our song unknown, hence why we chose to use a female character even when the singer is of the opposite gender. This creates an enigma code (Roland Barthes theory) as the audience wonders why a female is shown when its a male voice- this forces them to keep watching to figure out the context of our video (and my digipak design).

In our video, one of the lines of lyric say I am just a villain vying for attention from a girl. I used this line to reflect the position the character is in and also portraying sceptical view that a lot of people in society still have towards same-sex relationships, our character (and also many ordinary people) having been told that its wrong to love someone of the same gender as themselves, therefore viewing themselves as a villain since they dont feel that they conform to the norms of society.
