Ranked in more specialties than any other hospital in Northeast Ohio

Because the best care is our specialtyWe’re here to serve you in your neighborhood. To find a location near you, visit ClevelandClinicChildrens.org/Locations.

Do you have pain radiating down one leg, especially below the knee? How about numbness in the hip, thigh, knee or ankle? You may be experiencing sciatica, pain caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve — the longest, widest nerve in the body.

“Sciatica can cause excruciating pain for some, or just be bothersome for others,” explains Marzena Buzanowska,

MD, an interventional spine specialist at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest and South Pointe hospitals. “Once we pinpoint the cause we can aid in relief.”

Common causes of sciatica include a herniated disk (a disk that is pushed out of place) and lumbar spine stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal cord in the lower back).

Why sciatica developsThe sciatic nerve is made up of smaller nerves that branch out from both sides of the lower spinal cord. These join together, then split

in two to run down – and bring movement and sensation to – each hip, buttock and leg.

Compression along the nerve causes symptoms, usually on the affected side. Burning or shooting pains make walking, sitting and standing up – or even coughing and sneezing – difficult.

Sciatica usually lasts for a couple of weeks, but may persist for a couple of months or even longer.

Treating sciaticaDr. Buzanowska recommends starting treatment conservatively, with physical therapy. If that does not help, spinal injections may be considered. Surgery is usually the last resort.

“Most sciatica patients do not require surgery. Time, medication and physical therapy usually do the trick,” says Dr. Buzanowska.

To make an appointment with Dr. Buzanowska at Hillcrest or South Pointe hospitals, or another Cleveland Clinic spine specialist, call 216.636.5860.

Letter FromThe Mayor

Dear NeighborsIs it my perception or have the seasons become

shorter each year? Perhaps it is the hectic pace we have been keeping that hastens how time

passes, but it seems the ink hasn’t even had a chance to dry on our last publication. Yet, here I am writing again. Students are being hastened to college; backpacks are being loaded with all things from “the list” and the end of our very short summer is already at our doorstep!

Much has been happening around town since our last magazine issue! Road, sewer and other projects have been many, including the repaving of Cedar Road which, by the time this reaches your mailboxes, will hopefully be complete. As has been widely announced, our Fire Department reconstruction and renovation project is well underway – there are pictures in this issue – and we are now accustomed to operating in a construction zone. We have had some retirements and have new faces fi lling key roles, including a new Police Chief! When one gets to be my age change can be diffi cult but these have been positive changes that are benefi tting our organization.

Speaking of our Fire Station project; as I reported to residents at our State of the City Address in May, we designed to our budget and are working closely with our Construction Manager to keep to the maximum price fi gure they provided. Your City Council, our

Administration and Fire Department personnel have worked as a team through the process of planning, pricing and design. I am grateful for this approach as it brings forth the best results for you, our residents.

This year’s Home Day weekend is right around the corner - September 6th, 7th and 8th. I hope that you check out the line-up events we have set as there is defi nitely something for everyone! It will be a great time with a lot of family-friendly features each day, wonderful food, games and rides amazing entertainment and a great parade!

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, October 5th, which is our annual Council Coffee event and City Expo. There will be a lot of valuable information available from all our City Departments and other partners along with, of course, a wonderful breakfast provided by your Council and me!

As always, I look forward to seeing you at any or, hopefully, all our upcoming events!

Sincerely,

Patrick A. [email protected]

Mayor Patrick A. Ward

Get to know your Neighbors! It is not too late to plan a Block Party for this year or to pick a date for next! Every year we have more streets organizing Block

Parties and we really do enjoy the opportunity to interact with you and to see you interacting with your neighbors! Getting to know your neighbors is easier than you think and is really fun! If you would like information on getting your planning started

please give me a call and we will assist in any way we can! —Mayor Patrick Ward

Councilmen at Large Jeff Price, Joe Marko and Chuck LoPresti joined Mayor Ward and Councilman Steve Grushetsky at the Evanston Road Block Party on August 3rd. Great street, great neighbors and great Fun!

Schools & Education

The 2019-2020 school year offi cially launched on Thursday, August 15, 2019, when students returned to

classrooms and teachers prepared for another productive year of learning and achievement. Various clap-in and welcoming activities greeted students and families. Everyone in the SEL Schools looks forward to building on the academic strides made during last school year. Please remember, the community can remain actively engaged in the events and activities of the SEL Schools by visiting us online at our regularly updated website, www.sel.k12.oh.us, friending us on Facebook by searching for South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools, or following us on Twitter @selschools. Updates, great stories and exciting information is made available on a daily basis. Please plan to remain connected with the SEL Schools and the Arc Pride that is certain to surge with the kick-off of the 2019-2020 school year.

The District will once again host its SEL Appreciation Day on Saturday, September 14, 2019, from 12 noon until 4 p.m. at Legacy Village. Now in its 3rd year, those who have participated in this event in years past have experienced the passion and pride on display by students in all grades. More than 20 activity tents will be set up for fun games, learning demonstrations and more. Musical entertainment will be provided all day long on the Main Stage, showcasing the vocal and instrumental performing arts talents of our students. A Chinese Raffl e will take place featuring the prized merchandise from Legacy Village stores. This, in addition to the Raffl e where winners will be drawn at 4 p.m. near the gazebo. Winners need not be present. Tickets are $5 each or six tickets for $25 and can be purchased at the SEL Schools

Administration Building. Prizes include a $1,200, $800, and four $125 Legacy Village gift cards. This is an important event since the talents and treasures of the students of the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools will be on full display. All proceeds go to benefi t our student organizations. See you on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from noon until 4 p.m.

Finally, the SEL Schools would like to welcome Mr. Josh Hill to the District, who was offi cially hired as the next Treasurer of the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools at a Special Meeting held on Monday, July 29, 2019. The hiring comes at the completion of an exhaustive hiring process, overseen by Finding Leaders, a renowned, professional search fi rm, where many highly qualifi ed applicants were interviewed. Mr. Hill was chosen based upon his experience as Treasurer in other nearby school districts, his professionalism, and his eagerness to join our team and become part of our exciting direction as a school district. He most recently served as Treasurer in the Lorain City Schools and the Sheffi eld-Sheffi eld Lake City Schools, and also as Assistant Treasurer in the Cloverleaf Schools. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and a Master’s in Business Administration from Cleveland State University. Prior to his time in public education fi nance, Mr. Hill also spent time in the Cuyahoga County Auditor’s Offi ce. Please join the SEL Schools in welcoming Mr. Josh Hill as our next Treasurer! Thank you for your continued support, and let’s collectively work to make the 2019-2020 School Year successful, and one fi lled with Arc Pride!

HistoryHistory

WHAT WAS THAT STATUE, CENTERED IN THE BRUSH FOUNTAIN and what happened to it? Being a history nerd,

I was curious as to the statue’s whereabouts. I’ve had opportunity, over many years, to roam the catacombs below the school and I’ve never encountered it.

The statue was part of Angelo Palermo’s gift to the school system. The “Martha Garden” is named in honor of his wife and included the statue. I s earched our alumni association yearbook stash to fi nd that it disappeared sometime during 1943 or 1944. It was gone by 1945, possibly melted down for the war effort.

For years I assumed it was stone and a dry fountain, but this photo, found in a yearbook, clearly shows water fl owing from the top and splashing down the front of the stonework. I’m unsure of the statue’s signifi cance. It appears to be a stylized horse that is rearing up. Because of a limited number of old, halftone yearbook images to draw from, I can’t get a good close up, due to pixilation/dots. If anyone can offer insight, it would be appreciated. Please give Lyndhurst Mayor Patrick Ward’s offi ce a call to reach me about any historical matter. Thanks!

Preparing for the Seasons AheadLEAVES As we do each year, our City Service Department will be vacuuming piles of leaves from the tree lawns. Leaf pick-up will be on an AS-NEEDED basis.

All leaves that are collected from tree lawns will be recycled, composted and made into leaf humus or other product. It is extremely important that all leaves are piled on your tree lawn for vacuum pick-up. Please DO NOT pile leaves in

the street or gutter as this is a safety hazard and these leaves may not be picked up.PILED LEAVES MIXED WITH BRANCHES OR OTHER MATERIALS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP!At the end of the leaf season, should you have small quantities of leaves for pick-up, please place them in paper yard

waste bags or your designated yard waste container for pick-up on your regular collection day.We appreciate your assistance in assuring a successful leaf collection program and the responsible recycling of as

much of our yard waste as possible.

SNOW PLOWING Winter is not too far away and you may soon be contacted by Snow Plow Contractors regarding the plowing of your driveway this winter.

The City requires all commercial snow plow operators register with the City and obtain a permit. This is for your protection as we assure the vehicles are properly registered, properly insured and are equipped with the necessary emergency equipment.

While the City cannot assure the performance of your contracted operator, if they are registered with the City, you know they are aware of the City’s expectations!

Please remember that it is illegal to deposit snow in the street or block public sidewalks when plowing, shoveling or snow blowing your driveway. Violators may be prosecuted.

Please be sure your Snow Plow contractor is properly registered!

Let there be Musicand Arts!

S ince 1932 Motter’s Music provided the youth of Lyndhurst and surrounding areas with music lessons, instruments and

everything music related. In March of 2018 this Lyndhurst institution was acquired by Music & Arts, a nationwide organization that is not only continuing, but strengthening the product and service offerings we have enjoyed from this local institution.

Music & Arts offers music sales, instrument rentals, lessons and excellent instrument repair services. On the sales fl oor, in the repair shop, on the road, and in the lesson studios, they have an impressive team of experienced musicians ready to bring their expertise to the table and assist you.

With one of the strongest lesson programs in the area, they currently teach over 250 students of all ages, instruments, and backgrounds every weekend! In addition to still offering rental and sales options, they still have an on-site repair shop for brass and wind instruments as well as a third-party string repair technician. Their talented education representative team also helps the surrounding area by travelling to local schools and working with band directors to ensure that every student has the tools they need to succeed.

Music & Arts is located at 5228 Mayfi eld Road and is on the web at www.musicarts.com.
